Proves how well developed and sorted the 944 was. Back in the 80's it was often scoffed at and not even considered a "real Porsche" by the 911 die-hards. "Too civilized", "too technical" and "too modest" were common complaints. Nonsense, the car was just ahead of its time. Took way into the mid 1990's until other manufacturers produced practical supercars with accessible performance for their owners. This middle-aged bird (the car) still has got it. Merely a few seconds slower than V12 engined supercars in 2006 on the same track.
Fellow 951 owner here. I want you to know anytime I see someone downtalking the 944 series on the web I share this video to their thread. You can't argue with it. I've seen faster times but none that look as exhilarating. They really are fun cars.
I’ve had more performance cars than I can remember over the last 36 years, and the one I always miss the most was that 944 turbo and it’s understated capabilities. Amazing balance.
The VAST majority of the people with the skill and nerve to do “literally what the car is for” were wearing full-face helmets, Nomex and had a roll cage and magnesium wheels. This guy’s wearing jeans, a scooter helmet and welding gauntlets. Come on.
+944 turbo Thats amazing, I memorized the Nurburgring because of GT5 also , I was actually shocked by how accurate it was! Non the less amazing driving man and a phenomenal car
With playstation GT5 i am not able to drift. In reality i am. The steering wheel turns slower than in reality. May be assetto corsa with a thrustmaster t500 is better. i don't know.
Crazy to think of how competitive a 951 is today, especially sorted out with modern suspension and a little bump in power. To be honest, I think this BEAT the NSX as the supercar that you can daily and kill on a track. Believe it was Derek Bell who drove this and a 930 turbo, and was 3 seconds a lap faster (on a slightly long track - around 2:30) with the 944 turbo. Sure, the 951 wasn't tuned by Senna. It was tuned by Le Mans.
like zombie head said, the 944 is a much better handling car and could of easily surpassed the 911 of the time around a corner. i was informed by a retired Porsche engineer a few years ago that they created a concept called the 944gt that had a wider engine bay and an upgraded suspention to handle the weight of a modified porsche 928 v8 engine, it never hit production because it out performed the 911 in every way by a long shot.
I developed and campaigned a 944T in the SCCA for 7 seasons, running ITE, SPM and PCA2. The car always got me on the podium in ITE, and because of its reliability, also got me there in the other classes as well. 375 HP at 16lbs off boost, adjustable on the fly to 21 lbs. 2700 pound car, and by far the most neutral and forgiving handling of any car I owned or drove at the track. Nice drive of the 'Ring!
Get one. Turbos are sicko but pull third gear and you'll likely get arrested. I had an '88 n/a I drove 4 years before the 951. I miss pushing every gear in the N/A. It was slower but more fun in that way.
Absolutely heroic. Well played. I am restoring a 944 NA at the moment.. hope i can throw it around like this every now and again. I'm sure those 911 drivers didn't know what had hit them :)
Awesome video, the 944 t is very underrated. A maf conversion and a gt 35r turbo will convert the car into a 450 whp beast. Just add suspension, rubber and a competent driver. Will keep up too today's best. I've owned 3 of them in all stages of tune and speak from experience.
Fantastic driving! You are really pushing your machine and yourself to the limits! I love the slide at 2:29, well done! You will hit that sub 8:00 next time.
Absolutely incredible drive my man…. Holy shit.. bravo dude your experience shows I about shit my pants and your focus and responsiveness to the car while clearly pushing this machine to its limits and then controlling that was truly inspiring to watch.
Not to shabby for a 29 year old car! I have been the lucky owner of a 1986 951 Turbo. AKA 944 turbo since 1988. I have tried many times through the years to try and explain the hard core racing machine that these cars are. They really are unbelievable. I can say for sure that I'm alive today because of this cars incredible handling and braking. Saved my ass many times. I have to say though, this guy drive his car past what I could have ever thought they where Capable of! Balls The Size of MELONS!! I I bow before you Sir!
I'm a firm believer in training on the game consuls. My cousin was really fast in gran turismo....never been to the track. The first time I took him he yelled out the lines and I had the best times I've ever had before. I immediately went out and bought an Xbox to train on.
AWESOME! People seem to forget that the 944 platform was tested at the crucible of Lemans after it's mundane beginnings. A properly tuned 944 is a track weapon. Think about this, out of a gigantic field of cars the 924 GTS race cars finished 12th overall at Lemans, not in their class, but overall against GT1, GT2, GT3, LMP, Prototypes! Astonishing. The 944 platform is criminally underated and that's now changing with their value beginning to rocket for well kept examples. About time! Respect!
That is a fantastic time with that car. Long track that requires lots of hp. No factory support, and the Toyo 888's are not the best, plus a few corners I saw you go into under/over steer, but that is more of a heal and toe technique and since I have not driven those cars, I don't know if the pedals are set up for optimal use of that. Plus being a 5 speed and no PDK. That is truly a fantastic time. Very well done.
Used to watch the Sideways Stefan in the Yellowbird back in the 90s... this brought back so many memories... love how you can play with understeer and oversteer in the same corner with these things. 😉
