In the 1850s two British officers, Captain Richard Burton (Patrick Bergin, Patriot Games), a womanising anthropologist and Lt. John Speke (Iain Glen, Game of Thrones), an aristocrat with a pending book deal, embarked on an awe-inspiring adventure to discover the source of the great Nile River.
Warned of the many dangers ahead of them, the two pioneers attempted to make history, as the first ever Westerners to venture deep into the untamed African wilderness and document their findings. Along the way, their exploits become the stuff of legend - experiencing a fearsome lion attack, challenged by the complexities of communicating with the natives and observing the sheer beauty and grace of the greater African landscape.
But as the difficult journey takes its toll on the two intrepid explorers, their friendship is tested to the limits of conflict and pushed to the point of betrayal.
Based on William Harrison's epic historical novel, directed by Oscar® nominee Bob Rafelson (Five Easy Pieces) and with breathtaking photography from nine-time Oscar® nominee Roger Deakins, Mountains Of The Moon also features Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I), Bernard Hill (Titanic), Delroy Lindo (Gone in 60 Seconds), Fiona Shaw (True Blood) and Omar Sharif (Lawrence Of Arabia).
Really excellent film. Surprising that it didn’t do well at the box office. If I had the funds, I would love to re-release it with full on promotion and a few out takes included for those who have already seen it…

I thought that he was Welsh. I'm very sure that he is, as is Sir Anthony Hopkins
Britain ruled Ireland at this time. So although they are called Irish they were loyal to the crown. He would have been part of the privileged society. The poor peasants were the real Irish

Pellicola carina basata sulla vera storia di Riccardo Francis Burton e Giovanni Hanning Speke, pellicola non troppo entusiasmante, ci sono degli errori come il fatto che quando si prega per i morti mentre si è a bordo delle canoe, la preghiera recitata è una preghiera cristiana, che menziona Dio e Gesù. La possibilità che i portatori siano cristiani è estremamente remota. Sarebbero musulmani o seguirebbero credenze tradizionali, quindi carina e carina per me come valutazione è 6.

A very disappointing lacklustre film that depicts Burton and Speke as wimpy, whereas historically they were tough guys.
In one scene Speke kisses the fever-ridden Burton on the lips, perhaps the film-makers agenda was to besmirch these two great heroes.
I'm throwing the DVD in the dustbin..:)
The trailer does not entice one to watch the film.
@@Methne555don’t trust this moron. Just becuz these guys are being depicted as more complex and flawed humans rather than just big strong invincible imperial heroes, thats not a bad thing. This movie explores Burton & Speke’s friendship and eventual rivalry, and the hardships and brutality of such an expedition, no shit that their diary accounts were probably not describing themselves as being scared or fearful, this movie doesn’t besmirch them at all, they’re still shown as heroes for how much they underwent. The trailer is boring af
Nothing wimpy about Bergen's Burton. Also we all have different opinions - I thought it was well made, but of course, not a Friday night popcorn movie...
@@Methne555 I bought the film on DVD last year but it was so crap I literally slung it in the dustbin; normally I give DVD's i don't like to charity shops, but not this time, as i preferred consigning it to oblivion..:)
