In the not-so-distant future, strong-willed and beautiful Kate (Richardson) possesses a precious commodity that most women have lost and most men want to control... fertility. In a brain-washing bootcamp that turns fertile women into surrogate mothers for social-elite men and their infertile wives, Kate thinks she's made out well when she's assigned to an eminent party leader (Duvall). But when she learns that he's sterile, she's faced with the impossible choice: produce him an heir or die!

I remember reading the book & watching this one as a teenager. Thought the whole concept was creepy but watching the new Hulu series & how they made it so modern, makes the whole concept too creepily real.
Im agree and also for the fact that MGM and hulu are producing it. Nowadays we can expect the unexpected. Bring interesting topics never treated In television. This new movement that surround us fighting for equal rights for man and woman brings important things as a society and also values that went back to basics. Its harsh to change the well thinking but allow us and other generations to see the power that masses have and also their pursuit for incredible ideas, with not so many good intentions...
Also our mind and mentality r much more different, we value ourselves. and, Women r more United then it used to be.
It is saidit would take the elite 5 years to create a world like this
@@gaylelucas6295 that's really scary to imagine.
That's cause this already happened in Iran, Afghanistan, etc...💔😢
This doesn't look nearly as frightening and sinister as the show...
it's a shitty movie
It's not.
I want to see this movie.
For some reason this version looks more like a parody or SNL skit than a real movie..
@@JohnChangMBA it's just age. Pretty typical trailer style for it's era.
I love how they aren’t allowed their clothes but they get to keep their hairstyles! I
I thought the same thing but I'm pretty sure that was a commander's wife
They have to look good on film ...as well as for the commander that wants children
Yes I definitely think the new one the tv show is probably more realistic as to what it would actually be like
@@brandyjean7944 That’s because were also used to that but I agree, it makes the show so much better to give them no identity I have a no hairstyle, no make up, no name and so on (and so on and so on and so on……)
Probably every fan of the show has gone back to watch the movie at some point & it is really kind of ‘blah’ in comparison. Especially given the FANTASTIC cast.
But, if Aiden Quinn were my ‘Nick’ I’d have trouble staying away from him! He could give me a baby any day.
At this point in time in Aiden Quinn was pretty far toward the top of my list of dudes I’d like to help ME make a baby! 😂
The movie wasn’t great but it’s hard not to compare it to the show so I think personally, had I seen it back in the day I might’ve liked it more.
RIP Natasha Richardson. She would have been so proud of the series, and she was a wonderful actress. Faye Dunaway is such a legend. She should have a guest role in the series.
They should've casted her as Serena's mother.
@@barbarareynals that would have been so cool.
You can say that because you haven't had to work with her. She's a nightmare and would have made everyone miserable.
@@studiotodd did you work with her?
It looks like Offred is just ok with everything. No one seems bothered. So weird.
The threat of a dystopian US future wasn't as imminent back then when there wasn't a complete lunatic as president
Also look at the movie's cover at the end. looks like a fucking drama/romance movie where she's actually is some kind of lover or whatever. i'm so disturbed
Iaiá yeah the cast of the series are amazing actors. You feel every emotion.
J T I always hear about how he did it but can never find out where lmao
It's still a very disturbing movie
Seems this was treated as a romance. The poster reminds me of those romance novel series with subgenres like desire, etc
EXACTLY! If gave me cheesy romance novel vibes.
Exactly
Not like ... sinister like the hulu series
They went incredibly wrong with the posters, but I think the movie is pretty good if you can overlook some of the cheesey acting lol
I remember watching it some twenty years ago on tv. In Italy, so it was dubbed. And I wasn't paying too much attention in the beginning. It looked a little weird, like they were short on budget; in retrospect maybe it was an artistic choice (with this cast they must have had money), how everything seemed to be shot in handover sets, it might have had to do with the plot. Again, maybe it's because I did not pay attention in the beginning, and it was on a secondary channel, and the dubbing didn't make it clear that "Offred" stood for "Of Fred" (until I heard like ten names and I connected the dots in my English speaking side of the brain). All in all, it really was a cheesy romance dressed up in the dystopian sci-fi. I've only seen the first episode of the show and I haven't read the novel, but I'm pretty sure the spirit is much better portrayed in the series.
@@pirimpallopirimpalli4932 The series is completely different. Even the healthy romance is barely romantic. Everything is sad, depressing and intense. I love it..
Even though it's in English, I still forget that Offred is Of Fred. Loo
honestly just got a whole ass recap of the first season
The first season is the plot of the book. It ended where the book ended.
Ryan Trash that's bc the first season covers the entire book
It can't be a 'recap' of the 1st series if the movie came 1st. 🤦♂️🤦♂️😂😂
Kev O'Connor but... it is a recap of the first season because it’s the same plot.. i don’t think it matters whichever came first. the movie’s trailer gave me a recap of the first season, my point still stands.
@@ryantrash5190 a 'recap' can only be so if filmed or told AFTER the item being mentioned. You can say it follows the same story or that it's similar, but it cannot be a 'recap' if filmed 25 years previously. Perhaps you and the 180 should peruse a dictionary every now and then. Lol. If anything, the 1st series was a 'recap' of the film and the 2nd series followed on (ignoring the part where she was free at the end).
It was very good for it's time. People so critical of a movie made 30 something years ago compared to a massive budget Hulu series . Of course it's dated now but the fact that someone took it on 30 years ago when "dystopia" wasn't the buzzword and plot of basically every movie was brave back then. And the cast was great.
People were still extremely sexist (+ racist +homophobic) to women too, back then all they liked was a baddie with the [r-word] backstory or a "brainless" bombshell. The story was too ahead of its time
movie was scarier than the series.
the movie was really good and horrific enough to make me not want to watch the series because I just didn't want to be subjected to any more.
@@Salmiyaguy1 ...did you have a bad fall, hit your head? is your amygdala broken or are you just a fucking idiot
@Andrew take it down a notch, honey. I'm entitled to my own opinion.
Thank God for Hulu's rendition. This was over the top cheesey and no where near as terrifying.
Roxanne Sutton I think it's good in my opinion I also love the tv show version
Have u seen the movie? It was pretty darn terrifying lol
That WAS terrifying...........in the eighties. Movies and especially television have gotten much more realistic and dark compared to thirty years ago.
@@mgeek1 "The Handmaid's Tale (1990) - Official Trailer" The eighties? What?
@Gradius 1990 wasn’t too far off from the 80’s. Still the same styles
I had no idea they made a movie before the show. I want to watch this
Justin ProVideo whatever you do, DON'T watch this AFTER watching the series. 🙈
Justin ProVideo me either
Alyssa Bгown why? Lol
Faith Troup 강 영미 & JenJenn ! Well...the 90s version is just not as "compelling". If you see the new version first and then the old one you will get spoiled by the use of costume, colors, screen shots and camera angles. The 90s version seems too focused on top named actors who seem to rely on their stardom rather than their acting. They look like they're doing this as a side gig and having fun. The setting looks like they shot it on a lot at Universal Studios in CA. It has that "90s crayola brightness" that marked so much of the style of the era. Trust me, I was there👍
The modern version feels lonely and somber. Like a dim and muted future. Even the coldness, snow and rain.... Notice it never really seems to get warm? The actors and writers mesh well and they pull and drag you deep into their world.
Think of this: When the 90s version came out, no one even thought about going to a protest dressed up like a handmade😕
But that's just my 2 cents😀
Alyssa Bгown I haven't watched the movie just this trailer but I agree it is bright. Too much color and guess I'm spoiled by Moss' performance of despair and anguish but the actor's portrayal of their characters seem like they are playing them as content or happy in Gilead.
✌
the handmaid's tale series brought me here
same here... LOL!
Same!LOL!
Same for me
Duh?
Obviously
I remember this film being much more affecting than the trailer would make it seem. Haven't seen it since i was in my early teens though. I read the book a few years after seeing the film. The series is great because it's been so cleverly updated to reflect our society and make the fears truly relevant to a modern audience.
is there any differences between the movie and the book? if yes can you please point them out? i have to read it over summer break but im too lazy 😭
I didn't realize that the original movie had such a great cast. I'll have to watch it soon.
This trailer is so spoilery lol.
nadanemninguem I read a book
it literally tells the entire story
nadanemninguem it totally is. It's pretty interesting though it goes exactly by the show Almost. I kind of want to watch it LOL
Yeah but take your "lol" back to 2016.
That's how trailers were back then. They all had voiceover narration and would generally give a fairly thorough outline of the plot.
Swear this trailer basically told the entire plot of the movie from start to finish
That’s how trailers often were back then, tell ya the whole dang plot 😭
@@escabasket153 lol didn’t know it was that common back in the days
Once upon a time in the near future
My brain melted out of my ears when I heard that
And here I am in 2022, pregnant with no choice but to continue in my state. We may not be at the Handmaid's Tale level of dystopia right now, but they're definitely whittling away at our rights. I'm glad that I would have continued the pregnancy regardless, but there are many women in my position who will likely die trying to maintain their right to not carry an unwanted pregnancy to term.
No need to be so dismissive of the concerns of women as our nightmares come true one piece of legislation at a time.
It looks like a spoof from SNL
lol 😂
The actual SNL spoof was pretty funny!
Exactly
The really soft lighting/filter/filmstock they used, plus the hairstyles and clothing of the era really make this look like a 1980s CBS TV Movie of the Week.
I had NO IDEA there was a movie from the 90s
Here it's a list of Schlöndorff filmography:

Boaaa
I would avoid to be honest it's pretty awful. I don't think the world was ready for a more visually realistic adaptation of the book in 1989 than it is today.
This is so the epitome of a late 80s early 90s dark trailer.
Shoowww
Is this trailer voice always the same?! 🤔
Victoria Tennant's performance just makes you appreciate how good Anne Dowd is all the more.
I personally like this version. I caught it by chance one night in the 90s, it had already started, and I remember being very intrigued by the story, didn't know why they were all dressed in red. I didn't know what the title was until the hype went up five years ago for the news of the Hulu series, so I found out it was another version of that very weird movie I saw that night. Immediately purchased the book and at once I was sucked in and watched the series. That's why I don't dislike this first rendition, it has an important role in my love for The handmaid's tale.
Good point. I love the hulu series.
is there any differences between the movie and the book? if yes can you please point them out? i have to read it over summer break but im too lazy 😭
This is a bed time story compared to the show
It blows my mind how trailers in the past have narrators. I kinda miss that sort of thing. HAHAHAH
RIP Natasha. xx
She was amazing actress.
Natasha is my favourite actress
If she was still with us, it would have been a nice nod to the movie if she had played June/Offred's mother in the TV series.

parent trap evil step mom #neverforget
juiweiYang2000 that is so poorly written that I can't even read it.
Let's all remember that this movie came out in the 90's. Times were different. They were only allowed to show so much back then compared to today's time. I think it still looks intriguing to watch.
Bullshit. If anyhting they where allowed to show even more back then.
THe 90s wasn't the 1800-hundreds
I just watched the 8 hours tv series in one sitting, and now I need more episodes lol. The characters in the tv series looks a lot younger, the commander looks like Adam Levigne, his wife a super model and Offred a party girl.
ahhhh finally, im not alone, i need to see more nick
He's Joseph Fiennes. A much better choice than Robert Duvall in 1990. A younger actor could have been cast in the original film to play Waterford.
Lol....😂😂
Lol....😂😂
If you read the book, Commander Waterford and his wife are actually old... she walks with a walking stick and the implication is that the Handmaids don't get pregnant by Waterford because he's too old and swimmers aren't exactly buzzing anymore...
Ofred on here eventually escapes here and had twins - parent trap 😂
I did not know there was a movie of the handmaid‘s tale. This series is really good it took me an entire month to finish it
I’m here for more of Nick
Tina Nguyen I think I’m in love with Nick
Jessyca Rocha-Chagas same
Tina Nguyen lmao! These old actors... Zzzzz!
Omg same
This guy is hotter than the one in the series
Prime wants 10 dollars to rent it, when did we have to start paying so much for 30 year old movies?
Yeah I thought it would be five at the most.
I'm pretty sure I saw them charge $4.95 or something for Casablanca or Gone with the wind. Ridiculous.
The movie ain't as terrifying and gut-wrenching as the show. But it was alright. RIP Natasha Richardson.
Interessante
OMG! I never heard of the book let alone the movie until this year! I must get THIS!
Interessante
This is why talented writers, directors and producers make all the difference. Same exact story, vastly different outcome.
Harold Pinter did write the screenplay of the film version. He's one of the most respected writers ever whereas seasons 2-3 of The Handmaid's Tale got bad reviews.
I actually like the movie.
the 90's were so different from now... let's just say that
Natasha Richardson was a beautiful woman... RIP
I really liked the original film with the late Natasha Richardson. Such a shame that she's gone. 😥🙏
RIP Natasha
What’s sad is that this story is a happier one than what’s going on in some places of the world today.
Didn't know there was a movie of it... I need to watch it
Aidan Quinn is in my favorite movie of ALL time!!!!! "Legends of fall" with Brad Pitt. Adore them!
Where can I see the movie
Yes! Peak Brad Pitt perfection and Aiden Quinn with those eyes, Legends of the Fall is one of those movies that i could watch over and over lol.
@@LightsCameraActWithAlyssiaD I wanted to be Susanna sooo bad when I was younger. Lol she had them all.
1:18 Acting and direction straight out of the 80's.
Hell of a cast damn. So many legends 🙏
I think this movie was on AMC about 10 years prior to the show. The movie was only aired once on TV. The movie made Natasha Richards more well known till she died 8 years before the show began.
I always hear Gilead medical ads on the radio, they even have stocks.
I was 16 when the book 1st came out, & the story has stayed w/ me since then. I remember watching this version of "The Handmaid's Tale" & feeling very disappointed, so much so that I forgot I watched it till I saw this video. Every time I watch media created in the 70's & 80's I find it hard to believe we were satisfied w/ the junk they put out - it's terrible. It's like they grabbed people off the street, handed them a script, & started filming. I love how far we've come in how we use movies/TV to tell stories. The attention to detail (sets, clothing, props, music, etc.), showing the destruction/transformation of the world we live in now, how dedicated the actors are to finding the real & complicated feelings of the characters - all of it is has reached the level of true art.
lol
I disagree. There are plenty of incredibly great movies and shows that came out of the 70’s. I recently saw Roots and thought it was fantastic and gut wrenching. Watched plenty of movies from the 70’s as well and many have been absolutely fabulous.
I was today years old when finding out there’s a movie 🤯

Just felt what is living under a rock for 30 years.
Some serious actors in this.
Lady Grantham aka Elizabeth McGovern!!!!
Julia Wharton I knew she looked familiar but couldn’t put my finger on it. Thanks!
Shocked me too! I didn't know this movie existed. I thought it was stockard Channing at first
Omg I didn’t recognize her!!! Amazing
Where can I see the movie
Faye Dunaway is and always will be so gorgeous 😲

it’s a damn shame that natasha richardson (offred) passed away, she was a great actress. aidan quinn (nick) was and still is so extraordinarily handsome; those eyes are dreamy.
Remember him in Desperately seeking Susan ❤️🥰🤩
The red outfit looks so much better in this one with the red veil
My first thought EXACTLY! 👍
I remember when this first came out. Critics absolutely shit on it. I ended up renting it several yrs later after reading the book and it wasn't great, but not as awful as many would think. It's just peak early 90's cinema. The series is a million times better, but this was a good start.
This was an excellent movie for the 90s. Ahead of its time. Of course, the current one is better. But this one often gets unfairly criticized.
The handmaids need their “wings” like in the book.
Whoa! Time out! (I say that if I am shocked.). I didn’t know that this was a movie back in 1990. This is the first time that, I heard or seen that, there is a movie based on the book of the same name. That’s awesome!
This looks like a good ensemble cast in this movie.. Victoria Tennant also played the evil mom in Flowers in the Attic...
Reminded me of that “We have…” so and so at home meme 😄
Hulu brought me here........ plz Bring me back 🙁
Free Riley this so romanticized.
This is still my favorite adaptation of the book.
Why am I just now realizing this is the mom from the parent trap🤭
hey Nick is the guy from Practical Magic LOL
I love the way they used to tell the entire plot of the movie in the trailer 😂 awesome cast and incredible story, we read the novel and watched the movie in women’s studies back in 2002 and it was scary then the thought of it possibly being reality. Read the book it is incredible, I promise you. RIP Natasha Richardson 😭 you were amazing
Ps watch the series it is AMAZING- the cast is absolutely fantastic
IMO If I had it my way, this would be the way of life!
Unlike you, I didn't need a class to make me read it (and I can see how very fitting it is for a women/gender studies class -- sincerely happy to hear they teach it there), I read it as a leisure reading book as Margaret Atwood is one of my favorite authors... BUT LET ME TELL YOU: IT WAS NO PEACEFUL, LEISURELY STROLL!
Just jumped in here after knowing they filmed this at Michael Peterson's mansion after watching The Staircase in Netflix.👌🏽
Wow!
I guess I'm the only one who came here for Aidan Quinn.

He's super handsome
Not at all. Aidan Quinn is a beautiful man!
hehe me too. I actually didn't remember him being in movie until I saw trailer just now. I like him better than Max Minghella on the show.
Total sentido kkkk
They should make this into a show

The cast in this are phenomenal!
I love the costume design. Although the visual style is more lighthearted than the Hulu series which is just the bleakest thing I’ve seen on 📺
This was a great cast! The gal from Downton Abbey is in this! Cool.
I’ve never seen the movie but the series is both amazing and hard to watch all at the same time.
I love the series so much but now I can't have fun in anything! I tried watching shows like Emily in Paris and dynasty but nothing makes any sense now! They feels so fake on the other hand this show is so likely to be our future!
Personally, I think that what Margaret Atwood did with her novel of "The Handmaid's Tale" has shown about what the important issues were at the time. I really have been impressed with Atwood's vision of a nightmarish world according to her landmark bestselling novel.
i remember watching this on a local channel, wayback 93'.then i saw these on my fb newsfeed...i want to watch it again
This looks like a parody of the Hulu show lol. Not as terrifying.
Choices...
Scary thing is it could become reality!😯
I remember around 4th grade which was 1989-ish, I met an old man at the tennis courts in our apartments in North Carolina. He told me his daughter or step daughter, something like that, was in a movie. I totally didn’t care and thought he might be full of shit. He told me the movie was called “a handmaidens tale”. He was adamant about me remembering the name. So I remembered it but never saw or heard about it. I’ve thought about it my whole life. This has to be it. It looks interesting. I would really like to see it. I’ll have to look it up.
Parts were filmed in Raleigh and Durham.
This was before its time! The new tv show has had a completely different reaction because we can now see how easy it would be for something like that to happen ..
Not in North America it couldn't. The entire premise is beyond far fetched. Pure fantasy.
@@Carlton_Wilson really?? Its based after a civil war, America has had 2 major domestic wars and both of them dramatically changed the country.
@@NickyDee86 Yes, really. It's designed to promote a propaganda agenda which may well contribute to future civil conflict, but the premise is purely sci-fi/social fantasy, albeit with a cynical political message which promotes the fear of non-existent patriarchal tyranny.
@@Carlton_Wilson The novel was written in 1985, so over 30 years ago. The lives of women were very different and so it is not hard to imagine this dystopian future, albeit highly unlikely. All sci-fi and dystopian fictions are based on some element of truth, that is what makes them so engaging.
Is this a future reality of humanity? Almost certainly not. Are there some elements to society from the 80's and even today (e.g. abortion laws, which equal forced pregnancies) that make it even remotely possible? Absolutely
@@Carlton_Wilson Atwood was writing about where the Christian right wing could take us. Things are worse for women re reproductive rights now.
Aiden Quinn as Nick. Yea baby
Great movie! I loved it. You are missed, Natasha!! ❤️
WOW! I had no idea this was a show before the one we have now.
It's a movie
Even though this movie may have not been the best adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, I do like the dreamlike quality that this seems to have.
Agreed. The atmosphere is eerie and creepy, the dreamlike elements are definitely there.
For what it’s worth I quite enjoy it, decent adaptation of the story, key word being _adaptation_ because it does make some considerable changes for the screen, some of which I like, some I really dislike.
It’s a 7/10 film for me, has its issues, isn’t as good as the first series of the show, but it’s sort of unfair to compare, this has much less time to tell its story.
So basically Season 1...got it!
Honestly, these scares me out more then the horror movies, because it is more realistic. Just scary.
Estou chocada. Nem sabia q ja tinha uma versão de THT
Aqui no Brasil chegou com o título de " A Decadência de uma Espécie ", mas foi um fracasso de bilheteria, mesmo com esse time de atores de primeiro escalão.
I love this show. Hulu did a great job. I had no idea it has been on 30 years. I just recently heard of this Hulu

Excellent cast and respectable director.
I was looking for a new show to watch and I hadn't had anyone really tell me about this show. I saw the poster and I thought it was a period piece. And its starts with a car chase. I was confused. But 4 seasons later I'm still here. This show is awesome and I'm only just learning that there was a movie of it.
Damn, this is like the trailers from Grindhouse. It's really hard to accept that they were still like this within my lifetime and I was just too young to remember.
Just depends. There were a lot of big budget films then that looked nothing like this lol
The Hulu take on this makes me think something like this could actually happen. Especially when June says that she was asleep before but now she is awake, and she didn’t realize what was going on until it hit everyone like bricks (my words interpreted.)
Can’t believe that is the head teacher and the dad from Wild Child!
