A lot of what you guys say is just a direct result of not fully understanding the music as it was at that specific time. Not a knock on you, but its really one of those "you had to be there" kind of things. I personally like both versions.
You need to check out some of Megadeth's mid/late period stuff. With Metallica you've done St. Anger and Spit Out the Bone, but all your Megadeth reactions are their early albums. Megadeth grew into a deeper and more versatile band. Check out one of these: ""Washington is Next", "Trust", "The Threat Is Real", "Breadline", "Dance In The Rain", or "Blackmail the Universe".
I was there. Not 1984, but early enough, at 1987. Even then, Mechanix was blatantly weak in comparison to Four Horseman. I thought it actually did a DISSERVICE to Dave Mustaine because since Four Horsemen was released earlier, most people hearing Mechanix for the first time, were already familiar with Four Horsemen. And Four Horsemen is obviously more polished. So why would one (Dave) put a song out that was clearly inferior to the Other version? Bad move on Dave's part. Do it better or don't do it at all.
Just saw Megadeth Live a few weeks ago with Lamb Of God. Megadeth killed it!!! The new album is gonna be fire 🔥 Please react to the new Megadeth album “the sick the dying and the dead” when it comes out in the next few months
These two songs are a perfect example of how unique each band is. The song is essencially the same, but you can already feel how Metallica goes for the epic, more lengthy and melodic approach to music while Megadeth goes for speed and technique.
This was just the first album where it was a speed metal album. Peace sells and rust in peace had plenty of melody and epic lengthy songs. It’s not just one sound. Megadeth has always been diverse.
“The Mechanix” was always the name of the song wherever Mustaine went. It wasn’t “Four Horsemen” when Mustaine was still in Metallica. When Mustaine started Megadeth, he was angry and spiteful. He wanted to be faster and more metal than Metallica, and made Mechanix quicker and heavier to outshine Metallica’s. I actually know Chris Poland well, and he’ll giggle saying that the Megadeth version was just a little too fast. Fun fact: Mustaine was a fan of the out-of-phase pickup sound in the first two albums, which is why his guitar tone sounds so “clucky”.
That's really cool you know Chris. Back in the 90's I was friends with a now very prominent metal rockstar, initials CT. Taught me how to play power chords and palm mute. Is that the bc rich dave played that had the out of phase pickups? I always thought it had a unique sound, almost like it needed more distortion or a better amp or something. And Chris's tone was a little peculiar to me as well, which I attributed to his music man???
@@insufferablethrashelitist9305 I believe Dave’s old BC Rich was the out-of-phase guitar. I don’t dig too deeply into Megadeth’s past with Chris. Sometimes he’ll share a story, or even answer questions should I ask them. But I did bring up Dave’s sound back when, asking Chris about it while also asking him about their tracks being out of tune. He had told me that they tuned to ear for recording and never used a tuner. That, and Dave loved the sound of his pickups wired out of phase back then which is still an audible tone in the “Peace Sells…” album. I didn’t even know that Chris played Ernie Ball. I know he had deals with BC Rich, Paul Reed Smith (briefly - eg: “Return to Metropolis” cover), Yamaha, Schecter, and Legator. Perhaps he had a few others sandwiched in between. As for Chris’ sound, he always embodied that full, rich, smooth lead tone. Mixed with a unique take on metal soloing through his jazz roots, his sound is unmistakable. Even on the Megadeth album, “The System Has Failed,” you’ll always be able to tell which solos are his despite his absence from Megadeth recordings for over two decades. As the debate is constant over who the best Megadeth lead guitarist is/was, Chris is easily the front runner as the most unique.
As cool as Dave Mustaine is, that tone is horrendous. I'm glad he changed it up for the better in his later albums. Actually the tone on his newer songs are way more pleasing to the ears. Thank God.
The honesty of this channel is why I'm here! Megadeth is my favorite band but I'm not one of those that says or thinks they are better than anyone or everyone. I do like both bands and both the four horseman and Mechanix. Great video guys. Keep it up!
George has it correct. Mustane was pissed about getting fired, and when Metallica came out with new lyrics and title he decided to record his version. The intent by Dave was to play Mechanix at his shows as a middle finger to Lars and James. My understanding of the split was Dave partied a little too hard and had artistic differences with Lars. The straw was Dave fought one of the band’s roadies in Iowa during the cross to the New York recording, and that was too far for James. Metallica had become friends with Kirk prior to firing Dave, and decided to pull the figurative trigger. When they got to New York, the woke Dave up and handed him a bus ticket back to Ca.
Pretty sure I read years ago that they rented a uhaul for the cross country trip to NY and Dave was driving drunk while the rest of them were in the back I believe and he almost wrecked it. Something like that anyways🤘🏽🤘🏽
I’m a megadeth guy but I always thought four horsemen was way better. Mechanix always made me crack a smile though, especially with you two reacting to it.
I preferred the Four Horsemen on first listen, but Mechanix has grown on me much more ever since. Four Horsemen is just too slow for me and Mustaine played the solo way better. Kirk's solo sounded repetitive. Four Horsemen on 1.25x speed sounds great to me. Plus, this version they have reacted to is the remastered version which I don't like. The original is perfect.
If you want smooth, polishedand fine Megadeth: Countdown to extinction and Youthanasia are really good Album, a bit comparable to Metallicas Black Album and the a bit underrated Load.
Metallica with Cliff Burton was better than Megadeth for the first 3 albums (Kill Em All, Lightning and Puppets). I'd put Justice there too but Lars and James should have left the bass in. The Black album was great but they had sold out and it was more of a Bob Rock album than a Metallica album. Load and Reload were grunge garbage with a few great songs mixed in. St. Anger was and still is a pile of dogshit. The songs are OK live but the studio sound of Lars' drums and the lack of guitar solos and Bob Rock on bass. Their last two albums (Death Magnetic and Hardwired) they have gotten their sound back (thanks to getting rid of Bob Rock and finding another great bass player in Robert Trujillo and actually letting him play on the album and letting him and Kirk help the write songs) it's a shame because that is the sound and camaraderie and respect that Jason wanted them to have the entire time he was with the band. Rust in Peace is better than any album Metallica did after Cliff died and since then Megadeth are the better band. I'd put Metallica with Cliff #1, Megadeth with Marty Friedman #2, first two Metallica albums with Jason #3, last two Metallica albums with Robert #4, all other incarnations of Megadeth #5 and everything else by Metallica (Load, Reload, St. Anger and Lulu) last.
Great reaction, guys! Please check out "No Place for Disgrace" by the band Flotsam and Jetsam! It's the title track from their 2nd album released in 1988, and it's about Japanese Samurai warriors. Jason Newsted formed this band before joining Metallica in 1986 after Cliff Burton (bassist) died in a bus accident. Flotsam and Jetsam are still going strong. They just released their 14th album in June. Thanks! PS: I saw Flotsam open for Megadeth in February of 1987 at Sundance on Long Island (1st time seeing both bands). \m/
@@luemmel5No Place for Disgrace is their 2nd album. (one of my favorites of all time) Were you thinking of When the Storm Comes Down? A great album if not a little over produced and lacking a bit of the fire in NPFD.
Mustaine wrote this song but Hetfield and Ulrich changed the song a bit and that end up being The Four Horsemen. So this would be the original version without the input of James and Lars
These guys really need to get good suggestions like Lucretia, Mary Jane, Good Mourning/Black Friday or Looking Down The Cross. There's so many kickass and groovy Megadeth songs that barely get any attention from non die-hard fans
@@Walamonga1313 Blew my fucking mind hearing Last Rites/Loved to Death at the cinema before a film, it was for that iPhone advert that went around for a while. Made me feel like there's a bit of hope after all!
Man I love this album, the raw unpolished nature and speed, it had more of that punk aspect of thrash to it that unfortunately faded from much of the genre (Megadeth's first three albums still had that raw punk aspect to them). Perfect song for driving fast (car, motorcycle, dirtbike, in real life or even a videogame) or skateboarding.
Sometimes, faster doesn't mean better. Coz if you already started up a high level and fast, you instantly lose the small window for dynamics, which was the case for Megadeth's version. Metallica, slowed it down a bit to inject groove into the same song, thus have more room for dynamics, thus became the better version.
Do the Metallica 'No Life Til Leather's demo version called 'The Mechanix' with James on Vocals and Dave on Guitar. It's the best of both worlds. Tempo is somewhere in the middle of both versions
I agree 100% it's the best version. It's Goldilocks. Four Horseman is too slow and lacks the energy, Megadeth's Mechanix is too fast for the sake of revenge and looses the groove. I will say Gar's drumming on this is miles ahead of Lars or any other thrash drummers from the early 80's, he's just flexing his jazz muscles to the max here. James's voice on the demo is not great but the song on the demo track is just played at the perfect tempo. Also Ron McGovney's bass guitar is super good on that demo.
Dave was filled with a ton of rage and disdain towards Metallica for many years. The overachieving speed and solo was kind of his way of trying to say he can do it faster and more technical. Either way, it's for the best cause we got 2 amazing bands than just one.
Metallica credits Mustaine on their records for songwriting, but he didn't perform on any of them. He was fired before they recorded Kill 'Em All, so all the guitars you're hearing are James and Kirk, even on the songs with Mustaine credited.
They gave him credit yes but they put his name last, as in "Hetfield, Ulrich, Mustaine" for the songs that he wrote entirely except for the lyrics. Ulrich had no input on Dave's four songs on Kill Em All.
Yes, back in the day, we called this speed metal. Other bands like Anthrax also did alot of it. Some metal fans called it 'an acquired taste'. A lot of big name record companies of the time refused to label bands that played it, figuring it wouldn't sell, and wouldn't get radio play. Partly true. But this was cutting edge new stuff back then. Not many played that hard, that fast, and loads of future bands were inspired by it!
Dave's one to Cliff Burton after his untimely death. Amazing song, and great to hear him make that tribute when he was so angry with Metallica in general.
These guys love groover, it's a crime how they did this track and not literally any other, as they're all so damn groovy. KIMB, Skull Beneath The Skin, Chosen Ones or Looking Down The Cross... Hopefully one day
Perfect version: 1989 James Hetfield Vocals & Rhythm Four Horsmen Lyrics David Mustaine Lead Guitar Not Lars on Drums Jason Newsted Bass & Backing Vocals
This brings me back - this war was going on when I was in high school and literally us metal heads would argue every day at the bus stop about who was better. I've always liked both but Metallica was and is my favorite, especially The Four Horsemen. Dave didn't understand at first(for years) that he got kicked out because he was a dick, not that he wasn't a great guitarist. Glad they all get along now though
There's no question of Dave's all around chops on guitar, but you listen to the four horsemen solo and then this mechanix solo, it's clear to me beyond the main reason you correctly cite that they would have at least felt like they had an upgrade on lead at the time. These guys mention it, back then at least Dave's leads often decended into just going fast without saying anything, chromatic burning 24/7. Kirk even on Kill Em All sounded tasty.
@@VBshredder an upgrade? lol, Kirk literally listened to Dave's tape, learned the songs in less than a week and recorded them verbatim. There's no signature from Kirk anywhere on that first album, and I'm not a Kirk hater. He didn't contribute anything other than playing Dave's parts. If you loved that "tasty" guitar work on KEA, then you pretty much loved Dave Mustaine. The fact that the band didn't just let Dave record the album after driving cross country, so he could get paid and the recognition he deserved, was shitty behavior on their part. They could've replaced him immediately afterwards.
@@carlmclemore6104 That's incorrect, he may have followed a few bars here and there that actually worked, but otherwise it's a night and day difference. Starting with Hammett actually playing in key.
@@VBshredder People can argue back and fourth all the want. There's always going to be a lead guitarist or singer or drummer, or even a bassist they have over another. Just how it will be. But me personally, rift wise dave is one of thee best. The first 4 to 5 albums of metallica i can still listen to today. But after that, i started to lose interest in the music. But even i have to admit every band has a not so great album. For whatever the reason is. Just with metallica a lot of the later stuff just doesn't feel the same as it did to their earlier work. But other groups like exodus, megadeth, slayer, there later stuff still sounds good. In that regards metallica reminds me of testament. Where their first 4 to 5 i thought were good stuff. But after that just lose interest in the music. But in testaments case, they sound like they changed genres after the 5th album. Sounds more like death metal to me. Goes into how things change for whatever th reason may be. x. x Not into death metal btw. XD
Dave Mustaine had basically no money to make this first album, He didn't even have a singer so he ended up doing the singing. Dave ran out of money during production and had to ask for more. Megadeth's first album sounds raw, it sounds angry you can feel the venom of revenge in it after Dave got dropped from Metallica. The mission statement Dave came up with when forming Megadeth "we are gonna play faster and more metal than a metal band literally named after metal, we're gonna play harder and more technical". You can feel that in the music, Mechanix or four horsemen was a song Dave had created and had stolen from him. Still I think its great that we have two versions I love them both. This song is always highlighted in the Megadeth vs Metallica discussion and an interesting part of metal history.
Well guys I think now is the perfect time for the Metalica vs. Megadeth marathon after doing this comparisons. It would be cool if you did 5 songs from each band.
_The Four Horsemen:_ "We are well met in dire times as the forces of doom approach. Survival is doubtful, and the best any of us can wish for is to die honorably. Fate will soon be here. Stand or fall." _The Mechanix:_ "Ha! I do the sex! (Oh shit, it's over...)" That's kind of how it's always felt to me, these two songs. Artistically speaking, the way these two bands always hit me: Metallica always had scope, Megadeth (Mustaine) always had a point. Metallica had sweep and scale, Mustaine had targets and accuracy. Metallica was the emotions that drove you, Mustaine was the idea you wanted to express. Hetfield's voice was metal incarnate, Mustaine's voice was he's _such_ a great guitarist. Metallica -makes- made music that fans loved, Mustaine made and makes music that musicians love. Metallica is heart, Mustaine is mind. Metallica is a band, Megadeth is Mustaine.
As a personal preference, I feel that early Metallica is better than early Megadeth, but when Megadeth finally stabilized, they became better than Metallica. The best Megadeth is better than the best Metallica (not by much though, I love both bands).
@@bradleylambert4466 Sorry but No. Rust in Peace blows either of those 2 away. Hell the solos in Lucretia and Tornado of Souls are enough to say that. Kirk plays literally the same solo on every metallica song. its either wah wah blues shit or tappy tap. Marty blows him away every time.
I disagree. If we are talking about technique or how good they are at their instruments i agree. Megadeth are superior in that sense. However i think metallica does much better songs. I like both bands but I do think people shit on metallica because Megadeth are the underdog in terms of popularity. For me Megadeth = more skilled and technical Metallica = Better song writing and better vocals. Both good tho and it is okay to like both lol
The way it's always been explained is that Dave was an angry drunk in a band of party drunks, and they got tired of walking on eggshells with him, but they were all kids so rather than talk it out like big boys they fired him mid-tour while he was still hungover
You have to realize at the time (85) that solo was innovative and a flash of skill not many others had displayed. Your ears are now polished to what a solo should sound like to your liking. Daves solos on future records are absolutely more polished but what separated his solos from everyone else in the 80's was the speed they were delivered at.
@@Homie3794 Yeah exactly. I think people are giving too much credit to Mustaine on this guitar solo. As much as I like Megadeth and Dave's music . . . After getting use to proper music theory and good tone, going back to this and you can hear the mistakes. It's actually really bad. He's off key, off time, very choppy, terrible guitar tone. That solo was bad and I think people don't know what they were listening to when it comes to actual good sound or they believed it was good because of the legacy Dave Mustaine have made (and because of that, believe he can do no wrong.)
@@FIRE-LOTUS I look at it kinda like Page on Heartbreaker -- younger Dave's reach may have exceeded his grasp here, but overall it is still an endearing solo.
@@FIRE-LOTUS you're not looking at this through the lens of time. Listen to what other musicians have said about Dave Mustaine. Man made the template for what metal would become.
Chris Poland did some amazing solos on Peace Sells. Good Mourning / Black Friday is a masterclass, easily as good as anything Marty did (no diss to Marty, his work on RIP is amazing).
Basically the point of inducing this song on the album was a big FU to Metallica. If you want to hear a song off KIMB you guys will like and that really showcase's Dave's songwriting listen to Looking Down the Cross. It's right up there as one of the best Megadeth songs ever, yes even when compared to the songs off RIP, it's as good as Holy Wars or Tornado of Souls.
I can't tell you how much I love what you guys do! It's really cool to watch you actually break the solo section down into what you do and don't like... That is a true music listener!
Metallica did this on their "No Life Till Leather" demo.... James Hetfield singing. That whole demo is rather funny vocally. It used to be hard to find, but now in the internet age, it's probably readily available.
I was embarrassed for Dave the first time I heard this because The Four Horsemen is so much better. Before you kill me, Rust in Peace is a masterpiece of an album.
Yea four horsemen kicks this songs ass imo. Just because it’s faster doesn’t make it better, metallica played it at this pace live in the 80s anyway. The last solo on the mechanix is sloppy asf
No Life 'Til Leather. It's their demo with all them playing. Honestly, if they'd have stayed together, and kept the sound, they would have been the most unstoppable band ever. It's incredible. Edit: Forgot Cliff wasn't in it.
I expected you guys to not like this version, and i can see why. I love this version way much than The Four Horsemen, because it is so raw. Even the "bad production" (wich is bad, no question) adds to this raw aspect, and this is why this album is one of my favorite from Megadeth. You should listen to Rattlehead from this album, to have an unbiased view on that period of the band, imo.
I totally agree with you, i dont understand why so many people don’t like this version, it sounds way better except for these boots because it’s censored…
I definitely agree. Hearing the original version gave them a look to the rawness and low-production value of the original Megadeth, but the remastered version is the best version
Come on guys!!! It's time you pick a song from the album Youthanasia. Get some exposure to another phase of Megadeth. I think you'll enjoy it. Awesome job as usual
Dave referred to his early work as speed metal. Keep in mind, when thrash first came out it wasn't called thrash yet, just like hair metal wasn't called hair metal, grunge wasn't called grunge & classic rock wasn't called classic rock until later. I first heard the term thrash in the early 90's. Dave contributed a lot of the material for kill em all, but was fired right before it was recorded because of his personality conflicts and alcohol abuse. They all drank, but he was over the top and got pretty nasty. Mustaine is given credit on tracks, but never actually played on any Metallica record. James rewrote the lyrics and added the slowed down middle part, whereas dave sped it up as an F you to Metallica. I've always loved both bands and still buy their records when they come out. You should do some recent megadeth too.
When I started listening to Metallica and Megadeth in the mid 80's, we always called it speed metal. But we referred bands like DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, SOD, etc. as trash or skater trash.
Where I come from Metallica and Slayer were called speed metal and Anthrax, Megadeth, Kreator etc. were called thrash metal. That was late 80's. Hair metal was called glam rock or hard rock.
Maybe not in 1983, but it was a term long before the 90s. I have heard some interviews from 1984-1985 where members from Metallica talks about ”thrash metal”... But even back then they didn’t see themselfs like thrash metal band only, in one old interview Lars says he even prefer the term ”Power metal”. I dont remember where I heard these interviews right now, but I am sure of this and I can find them later.
The guitar solo at the end redeemed the rest of the song, but it doesn't put it over "Four Horsemen". I remember reading an interview in a Guitar World, with Zakk Wylde and Dimebag Darrell, where the interviewer asked them their individual philosophies for playing solos on songs. Zakk said that he'll force a solo into every song, while Dime said that he'll play a solo if it fits the song. Dimebag was right, and Pantera will always be better than BLS.
He was in the band, helped in a large way to write The Four Horsemen, along with a handful of other songs. He then drank too much, spilled beer on some music gear and ruined it, got in some fights, and was eventually fired. Then he wanted the rights to those riffs because he had so much to do with writing them, won the lawsuit, and used the riffs to write this song.
You know Dave, being Dave, had to do it faster (because hellz yeah!). I honestly never had any idea what Mechanix was about--which is hilarious--but it doesn't really matter because you can't understand a word he says at this speed anyway lol.
you are spot on that those of us that heard this in our teens or early 20's will have a different perspective than someone hearing this kind of thing for the first time after 30 or so.
8:28 Let's just put it this way. There were creative differences in that Metallica felt like Dave's drinking was getting too out of hand, so they ditched him pretty harshly. This coming from the band that would also become known to some as Alcoholica.
Dudes!! You NEED to check out the 5th band of the “Big 5” of Thrash, Testament. Eerie Inhabitants, Disciples of the watch, Trial by Fire, off of the New Order would be great songs to start with. Testament is BAD ASS🤘🏽🤘🏽
The first 4 Testament albums have some of the best songwriting in the whole genre. But IMO they have one of the worst sound production of the "famous" thrash groups in the 80s. And don't think that I prefer the modern production where every band sounds the same and there is nothing unique (the new exodus song is a good example) because all the 2000s albums sound like ass. I just think that bands like metallica, megadeth, slayer, sacred reich, Annihilator, demoliton hammer, evildead ect had waaay better production.
The Practice production is pretty good. The song writing on the first 3 albums is so good I hardly care about the production. My biggest complaint about their music is I feel the drumming is just beat keeping. But still love the first 3 albums. BTW Metallica production before Black album wasn’t so great either. I love the sound of Justice despite missing bass guitar.
Remember gentlemen, you're listening to earliest Metallica here! The speed predates Dragon Force by quite a few. And it's got that Weird Al rhythm. But it kills. And you know it. Love you guys' content. Thank you. 🙏❤️🙏
Hahahaha! That comment on Dave's lead reminds me of the time he made a cameo on The Drew Carey Show. (Look that up! "Whoaaa, don't be nervous, son, just slow down!" "But it's supposed to sound that way!")
Another example of Megadeth being at a higher technical level than Metallica but Metallica just sounding better. There are songs by Megadeth that Metallica would have a very hard time playing but, other than two or three songs, I tend to prefer Metallica's sound. To be clear, though, Dave wrote them both. He composed the complete 4 horseman layout when he was with Metallica. He talked about the sweet home alabama part in an interview. Btw, you probably should have listened to the remaster. The original sound quality was really bad to be honest.
Yeah, I don't know if it was this intentional but I always heard the speed difference as Horsemen is supposed to sound like a horse galloping and Mechnix is supposed to sound like that "blugidabugida" of an idling old muscle car engine. It's super impressive to me how well he nailed that sound and still made it sound musical but at the same time I do think it just hits way harder at the slowed down four horsemen tempo.
Even though I love Mechanix, I personally prefer The Four Horsemen. But listening to 4 Horsemen after listening to Mechanix makes the start of 4 horse sound kinda dull and too slow hahahaha
The first Megadeth album, as Dave Mustaine himself said, was the record of revenge. He wanted to show that he could play better and faster than the former band. And he definitely made it, since there’s a huge gap between the two bands’ skills, being Megadeth technically much better; Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson had played together in a Jazz / Fusion band called The New Yorkers before they joined Megadeth. The rest, for me, is all about what you like better.
@@herasfgfgf and Metallica would never be able to play any song from the first 5 Megadeth album. There are facts and there’s taste. Megadeth are way better musicians than Metallica, excluding the voice, fact; you like Fade To Black while I like Good Mourning / Black Friday, taste.
@@herasfgfgf Metallica could never play Anything off Rust In Peace. Imagine Lars trying to drum Rust In Peace Polaris or Five Magic’s 😆😆😆 Imagine Kirk trying to play Tornado of Souls 😆😆😆
Never mind! Mechanix is the worst song on the album! I don’t know why everyone gravitates to it. If you want to hear the soap opera listen to the stuff with Dave in Metallica and hear how Kirk played all the same solos!!! Ripped Dave off!!! Then listen to Dave on his first song on his first album- Loved to Deth. Your hair stands up on the song especially the solo. It’s major angry revenge at it’s best. Mechanix is just funny cause the cheesy lyrics basically desecrate how special the 4 horsemen tries to be. It’s a dig. They are faster which used to be a really big deal.
I think you must do Testament justice. You reviewed only an Aerosmith cover of theirs that they only made to fill an album in a hurry. I would suggest the New Order song e.g.
Yeah i don't get why they did a cover over their regular music. That's the one thing that shouldn't be done in any groups albums. Doing a cover over their regular stuff. lol I like the first 4 to 5 albums of testament myself.
Love you guys!! Team Mustaine here, if you're counting lol. That being said, I love old-school Metallica (pre Black album only lol.) My final vote was locked when Metallica sold out and Mustaine kept calm and carried on. The point of this post is only to state that while I'm team Mustaine, I've always felt that Dave purposefully sped up the style of mechanix to shove his guitar mastery it in the face of James and Lars after they kicked him out of Metallica. "The world's state-of-the-art speed metal band!" \m/
Nah nah nah listen to Metallica’s no life til leather demo recorded before kill em all . Dave recorded with them. Kirk essentially mimicked Dave’s guitar solos and riffs. As he did on ALL songs Mustaine wrote and played on. Kirk didn’t have original riff until master album
@@jstill666atgmaildotcom What?! I guess Dave originally did all the solos to Ride the Lighting too. Don't get me wrong I'm a Megadeth fan first but Kirk killed the solos on that album. Creeping Death and Fade to Black, Kirk killed those solos.
Get what your saying just that Dave was playing those songs and solos before Kirk came on and he really didn’t change much to what was already done. And believe I was a Metallica fan first. Kirks recorded versions do sound better. Was only talking about the kill em all album. Ride the lightening was all Kirk
He never has. Hammett has been playing the same phrases in all the solos in every song of all the albums since 1982, and after all this time he also got a lot worst. He’s never been technical. On the other hand, Mustaine is not consistent. In the first 2 albums he played very difficult solos, but excluding Lucretia he started to slow down a lot on Rust In Peace, then spent all the 90s writing simples licks. He came back with Endgame anyway. Concerning this solo, Mustaine’s version has more notes and a wider variety of phrases. Technically, there’s no comparison.
@@nickred652 it’s not, Mustaine’s version has more notes and more phrases. It’s also much harder to play. Hammett’s version has a couple of similar passages, but it’s much, much easier and boring to play. Just a cleaner tone.
Hardly think the drinking was a problem when they all drank heavily and still James was in rehab this past year so because of it. Dave was just a wild person
@@venum98 Nah, alcohol hits everyone different and Dave himself has said that part of it(not all of it, before fanboys try to behead me) was the fact that when the other guys in Metallica drank, they were happy goofy drunks and he was an angry drunk, therefore he always caused trouble.
peeps saying this song is proof James and lars are better than Dave. Lmao. Dave wrote the fucking song all they did was slow the damn thing down. the lyrics are better yes but he wrote the freaking song And you know what else? he wrote call of cthulu, AND a part of leper messiah, AND all the stuff you've already reacted to. This is HIS song. Im not saying he's better theyre both great but he was like 21 here and its impressive. stop saying one is better they're greats
Well... He wrote the intro to Cthulu (which is also used in the outro), and claims he came up with the "spider" riff that was used in Messiah (and he says crap like that all the time). So saying he wrote those songs is just a bit much. I respect Dave for writing Mechanix, but Metallica's version is definitely better. I don't want to sound like I'm knocking Dave though, because he is great in his own right, and deserves credit. He just doesn't deserve ALL the credit.
@@Chris-bu3wn he did write all the music for the Call of Cthulhu that’s facts tho. He wrote the whole music for Phantom Lord, Metal Militia and Jump in the fire. It’s documented and there are plenty of demos out there to prove it not just his words.
@@Qthetar uhhh, no it's not documented, actually quite the opposite. What IS documented is that he CO-WROTE those songs, and as far as Cthulu, Dave himself has said that he wrote the intro. There is no documentation anywhere (at least not authentic documentation) that says he wrote all of these songs exclusively by himself. And all of the demos that have been circulated were Metallica demos with Dave playing on them, not Dave Mustaine demos without Metallica.
In the VH1 Behind the Music on Megadeth, bassist David Ellefson said before they went in to record this album people kept asking over and over to the band "It's going to be fast, right?" He said people were all about fast, fast, fast. Paraphrasing him, "And we turned up the bpm...next thing you know we're a speed metal band."
U can hear the Merallica version of "Mechanix" on their 1982 demo w/ Dave Mustaine on guitar & Ron McGovney on bass. The cool part of Megadeth's 'Mechanix' was that (late) drummer Gar Samuelson was very good at the double bass drumming... bassist David Ellefson used a pick to give a more tightness... and Mustaine really ramped up his guitars. That made this version more frantic than Metallica's 'Four horsemen'
I'm much more in the Megadeth camp over Metallica, but have always love The Four Horsemen over this version all day every day. I still like this version, but Metallica just did it better. This whole album kicks major ass though, you guys should check out some more from it. Rattlehead, Skull Beneath the Skin, or Last Rites/Loved to Death would be my recommendation.
While this song doesn’t have a swing feel per se, it really helped to have Gar Samuelson, a jazz and fusion drummer to propel the grooves. As over the top as this is there’s a lot of really subtle things that perfect the song. RIP.
I've always preferred Four Horseman to Mechanix. Mechanix just sounds fast for the sake of being fast and it loses something as a result. Like you don't get the chance you appreciate what's happening. Just my thoughts.
Mechanix to me is more of a straight forward fast as fuck metal song, four horsemen is a more complex, more mature song. I can't decide honestly, it goes to show that pretty much the same song can be altered to have a completely different mood. Drumming wise it goes to megadeth any day though. Man was Gar such a great drummer.
The point of "Mechanix" was just to show off speed compared to "Four Horseman." The solos are the same at the end of both songs. Dave just sped it up. Many people have mentioned it already, but the title track "Killing Is My Business" or "Wake Up Dead" off of the Peace Sells album are both incredible
Dave wrote a bunch of the songs on Kill 'em All. When they took him to the bus station to put him on the bus the last thing Dave said to them was "Don't steal my songs!" and the rest is history.
Some great songs to check out from Megadeth that you guys haven't checked out yet are: Wake Up Dead, My Last Words, Looking Down The Cross, In My Darkest Hour.

Four horsemen. I like the speed on Mechanix but it sounds hurried, not fast.
Just saw Megadeth Live a few weeks ago with Lamb Of God.
Megadeth killed it!!!
The new album is gonna be fire 🔥
Please react to the new Megadeth album “the sick the dying and the dead” when it comes out in the next few months
Four Horsemen always sounded like the galloping of horses to me while Mechanix sounded like pistons pumping in an engine.
I've always thought the same.
Wake up Dead. You will appreciate the growth of Dave and Megadeth in this opening track from Peace Sells.

Just a ridiculous song, I can’t believe they haven’t done it yet
These two songs are a perfect example of how unique each band is. The song is essencially the same, but you can already feel how Metallica goes for the epic, more lengthy and melodic approach to music while Megadeth goes for speed and technique.
This was just the first album where it was a speed metal album. Peace sells and rust in peace had plenty of melody and epic lengthy songs. It’s not just one sound. Megadeth has always been diverse.
Metallica goes the lullaby way.
Megadeth is way more melodic
@@jacobballance117 they changed up their styles a lot. Fast and furious was Dave's strategy at first but he switched up later on.
They both became GREAT bands!
How Gar double the riff at the last section is insane .
Incendiary
How Gar double the riff at the last section is insane .
Incendiary
Thank God.
The drumming in Mechanix is extraordinary! Gar is tragically underrated🤘
1000 % agree Gar is way underrated
I do prefer menza slightly but gar is possibly the most underrated drummer ever

"partied too hard" is a weird way to qualify an alcoholic
@@tiousmehdi6330 qualify? I’m not sure what you mean by that. I don’t know Dave personally, so I’m just relaying the stories I’ve heard.
And in that bus ride back to California, Dave read a magazine that talked about "megadeath", and got the name for the band from there
@@Sommertest he didn't "party too hard", he was alcoholic, he had a severe alcohol problem. That's why he got kicked.
Pretty sure I read years ago that they rented a uhaul for the cross country trip to NY and Dave was driving drunk while the rest of them were in the back I believe and he almost wrecked it. Something like that anyways🤘🏽🤘🏽
There is also a version of The Mechanix with James on vocals and Dave on lead guitar
I would like it if Dave’s shitty vocals were not on it
I was just about to say the exact same thing
Their best song imo is Good Mourning/Black Friday.
The lyrics are way better on Four Horsemen but that’s it, otherwise imo Mechanix is better.
If you want smooth, polishedand fine Megadeth: Countdown to extinction and Youthanasia are really good Album, a bit comparable to Metallicas Black Album and the a bit underrated Load.
Rust in Peace is their finest hour. I'm really looking forward time hearing the new album.
I love all that you said and yes Load is a great album. Outlaw Torn all of it really.
Countdown and killing are my 2 fav Megadeth albums!!!!
@@biganttony6786 it took a long time to like Load. I changed my expectation and then it is just great Rockmusik

And they played 1 note on 3 😅
They gave him credit yes but they put his name last, as in "Hetfield, Ulrich, Mustaine" for the songs that he wrote entirely except for the lyrics. Ulrich had no input on Dave's four songs on Kill Em All.
@@astro2691 Yeah there some things to question when it comes Lars being credited there.

If you guys like the groove, "In my darkest hour" is the Megadeth song you want to react to.

Hi Lost in vegas. Enjoying your videos from Colombia!!!!
XD
@@gohanangered9650 Don't disagree, dave's riffs are killer. Different thing than lead playing
The best song of each of their first 5 albums.
Dave Mustaine:There's two ways you can hear this next song. There's my way and then there's their way,but they're really both my fucking way
JUMP IN THE FIRE! Perfect mix of Mustaine's original riffs with the rest of Metallica's production.
_The Four Horsemen:_ "We are well met in dire times as the forces of doom approach. Survival is doubtful, and the best any of us can wish for is to die honorably. Fate will soon be here. Stand or fall."
_The Mechanix:_ "Ha! I do the sex! (Oh shit, it's over...)"
That's kind of how it's always felt to me, these two songs.

I disagree. If we are talking about technique or how good they are at their instruments i agree. Megadeth are superior in that sense. However i think metallica does much better songs. I like both bands but I do think people shit on metallica because Megadeth are the underdog in terms of popularity.

Megadeth = more skilled and technical
Metallica = Better song writing and better vocals.

They were speedy, but definitely not as clean and intricate as Marty Friedman. It’s a lot of just chaotic picking in the minor pentatonic scale.
@@Homie3794 Yeah exactly. I think people are giving too much credit to Mustaine on this guitar solo. As much as I like Megadeth and Dave's music . . . After getting use to proper music theory and good tone, going back to this and you can hear the mistakes. It's actually really bad. He's off key, off time, very choppy, terrible guitar tone. that solo at the end is the exact same solo as four horseman. Kirk Hammet plays all of Mustaines solos on Kill 'Em All.
I expected you guys to not like this version, and i can see why. I love this version way much than The Four Horsemen, because it is so raw. Come on guys!!! It's time you pick a song from the album Youthanasia. Get some exposure to another phase of Megadeth. I think you'll enjoy it. Awesome job as usual
Yes. They need to do Addicted To Chaos.
Finally you guys did a video on Mechanix!
Do Ride the Lightning by Metallica, it's got some mustaine riffs as well.
Yup! It has the original “spider chord” riff that Dave invented
Knowing your taste of this kind of music, from this album you'd probably like "Looking Down The Cross" or "The Skull Beneath The Skin".
@@ericmclaughlin73 cool insight man.
First time I saw Metallica, suicidal played there too. And Danzig.
Where I come from Metallica and Slayer were called speed metal and Anthrax, Megadeth, Kreator etc. were called thrash metal. That was late 80's. Hair metal was called glam rock or hard rock.
Thrash already had a name for itself by 1984, if not thanks to Whiplash from the year prior. Grunge was called grunge by 1989.
Great video guys!
Zakk is overrated, and him saying that certainly displays his oversized ego and immaturity as a musician.
But yeah, I also prefer the slower tempo on Four Horsemen
you are spot on that those of us that heard this in our teens or early 20's will have a different perspective than someone hearing this kind of thing for the first time after 30 or so.
How about some Old School Blues????
Try Howlin’ Wolf- Smokestack Lightning
Oh yeah! For me the first pure Rocksong, damn powerful!
Guys - you've GOT to check out Halestorm - you won't regret it. I promise.
The thing is, when Dave formed Megadeth, he wanted it to be more heavier and faster than Metallica. And that's what you get with their first album
Spot on.
Honestly, I end up listening Testament more than any of the big four!!!
They did Practice What You Preach a while back, and maybe one more(?)
@@stephenreagin719 oh. Guess I’ll have to go back and look. But I still think tracks off The New Order would be Great🤘🏽🤘🏽
The first 4 Testament albums have some of the best songwriting in the whole genre.
I love the fact that I could see Lemmy playing and singing this and it would fit so well on Overkill.
Remember gentlemen, you're listening to earliest Metallica here! The speed predates Dragon Force by quite a few. And it's got that Weird Al rhythm. But it kills. And you know it. Love you guys' content. Thank you. 🙏❤️🙏
Percussion, baby. That first 30 seconds is a lesson in fills. A small example of what makes Megadeth so special.
Now you guys have to do the “original” with Mechanix by Metallica. The “No Life Til Leather” demo tape
They’re both good but I prefer mechanix and the four horsemen is too long and slow for me
I think that was the point, haha.
Mustaine never played with Metallica un the studio albums, Kirk was the lead guitar
The rest, for me, is all about what you like better.
megadeth could never make a song like the unforgiven or fade to black
@@herasfgfgf and Metallica would never be able to play any song from the first 5 Megadeth album. There are facts and there’s taste. Megadeth are way better musicians than Metallica, excluding the voice, fact; you like Fade To Black while I like Good Mourning / Black Friday, taste.
@@nickchucky3173 master of puppets and damage inc are very fast songs too metallica can play fast
@@herasfgfgf but not accurately, they’re actually technically sloppy.
@@herasfgfgf Metallica could never play Anything off Rust In Peace.
Imagine Lars trying to drum Rust In Peace Polaris or Five Magic’s 😆😆😆
Imagine Kirk trying to play Tornado of Souls 😆😆😆
Very excited to watch you guys watch this.
After Mustaine got kicked out of metallica he went back and said...."AND I'M TAKING MY SONG BACK!!!" 🤣
(And he made it better imo)
You can actually find Audi of James singing with the original mechanix lyrics, it’s really trippy.
Sorry. I wanted to add, while showcasing amazing skill, I do agree that Horseman is the better rendition of this song
Sorry for this but Kirk Hammet blows the shit out of Dave’s solos in this. Dave might have written the templates but Kirk has much better technique.
You guys are great, keep it up!
It's funny how Ryan criticizes the solo at the end, but the solo is also used note for note in The Four Horseman (albeit at a slower pace).
Not really. I played them both and Mustaine’s has a lot more notes and variety of phrases.
The faster solo is always the better solo in metal unless it's sludge metal.
It's definitely not note-for-note. And Kirk's solo has more feel. And his guitar is in tune...
@@nickred652 it’s not, Mustaine’s version has more notes and more phrases. It’s also much harder to play. Hammett’s version has a couple of similar passages, but it’s much, much easier and boring to play. Just a cleaner tone.
Kirk simplified it towards the end. (Easier to play)
Omg I asked for this thankuuuuuuu
They fired Dave because he’s just a hard person to deal with. Add alcohol and he was impossible to deal with.
Holy Shmidt!! you mush have seen my comment on The 4 Horseman!!!
peeps saying this song is proof James and lars are better than Dave.
@@Qthetar Oh? Are there demos pre-Metallica out there of these songs?
@@Qthetar uhhh, no it's not documented, actually quite the opposite. What IS documented is that he CO-WROTE those songs, and as far as Cthulu, Dave himself has said that he wrote the intro. There is no documentation anywhere (at least not authentic documentation) that says he wrote all of these songs exclusively by himself. And all of the demos that have been circulated were Metallica demos with Dave playing on them, not Dave Mustaine demos without Metallica.
@@Chris-bu3wn no member in Metallica ever denied his claims on the songs he mentioned none.
As someone who loves megadeth, appreciate the honest reaction! Keep it up guys
RIP.
Guys you should try Wolverine Blues by Entombed. Groovy as hell and a riff machine! Think you guys would dig it.
Remember that Thrash was just finding it's feet when this was recorded and that Dave Mustaine was one of the founding members of the genre.
I've always preferred Four Horseman to Mechanix. Mechanix just sounds fast for the sake of being fast and it loses something as a result. Like you don't get the chance you appreciate what's happening. Just my thoughts.
Exactly. Metal isn't all about speed. Just think ozzy dio priest maiden. If you're gonna play fast be precise.
Wrong. He only CO-wrote 4 songs.
Metallica had every right to use songs they worked on with Dave.
@@frankv.6050 Exactly. Only these young kids who’ve never bought a physical copy of Kill Em All think Dave wrote all the songs haha
@@facelessandnameless Yup
