Dave’s voice isn’t for everyone, but you cannot deny he sings from the heart - raw, visceral, and honest.
It helps that Marty is backing him up!
Dave does the best he can with a strange vocal tonality.
@@chopperdeathuh... not in this album ...lol.
@@chopperdeathWell it was Jeff Young who was playing on this album. He was a fabulous addition imo. His solo captures the chaotic feel of this song
That's true, he does write very honest lyrics. I never really cared too much about his voice because megadeth is an instrumental band. He sings because a singer is needed, but the vocals aren't the point of their music.
A deep cut on this album that absolutely doesn't get the love it deserves is Hook in Mouth. Criminally underrated
My favorite one by them
Peak megadeth
Shoutout to the PMRC!
It's by far ahead of its time as far as cultural relevance
One of their best tunes and even more relevant nearly 40 years later.
Hands down one of Megadeth’s greatest songs and this album is an absolute masterpiece
agreed, EXCEPT… their cover of ‘anarchy in the u.k.’ can’t touch the original.
@@SecretGerms Disagree, their version of Anarchy is better than the original. The Sex Pistols never did it for me, personally.
@@amandahuginkiss6868 hey, that’s your opinion, but man, megadeth’s version is soooo weak.
i assume you just don’t like punk.
@@SecretGerms yeah, I'm not the biggest punk fan. Misfits and Dead Kennedy's, that's it for me. I just really dig how Deth speed it up a bit, had a little more polish to the sound. Thrash metal wouldn't exist without punk, but I just happened to miss it, and went straight to metal 🤘
@@amandahuginkiss6868 understood and respected
About a failed relationship, but the mood was inspired by Burton’s untimely death. It’s both in one. Confusing, I know, but Mustaine did mention this in his autobiography.
Well said. Great book by the way.
The best way to describe it is: Dave found out that his best friend died. Then he needed emotional support, but couldn't get it from his girlfriend. How would that make a man feel? The answer for Dave was this song.
I remember hearing an interview with Dave on that radio show "Metal Shop" in 88 when this album came out. And Dave said he wrote this "mellow calming song" after hearing Cliff had been killed. So yeah...hes definitely acknowledged it throughout 👍
Essen ‘88 there’s a great clip of Dave yelling RIP Cliff after this song
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 Nice troll, but no dice.
Not about Cliff Burton, but written by Dave immediately upon hearing the news of Cliff’s death.
High emotions.
Yep
@@midaswelby8698 yeah it was, Dave cleaned up for Rust in Peace, but was out of control for this album.
The last line, "this good thing passed away" I believe has double meaning.
It blows my mind how ppl don't like his voice but that's what MAKES megadeth that voice is so unique
Dave might not be the best vocalist but he is an elite frontman.
WAKE UP DEAD!!! YOU NEED TO DO WAKE UP DEAD!! Strong buildup, followed by one of the best transitions in all of metal, followed by one of the most headbangy riffs in all of metal, followed by a freight train obliterating you, followed by one of Dave's best solos, all in under 3minutes!!
Good reaction too...I understand you didn't appreciate the solo, but look at it as the descent into emotional turmoil and madness that Dave experienced immediately after Cliff's passing and the backdrop of his failed relationship
Nah
Yes
Concordo tem que fazer wake up death
There are like few of the best transitions ever. The song is one progthrashmetal anthem with sick riffs, solos and groove as well. Yeah, they need to do that.
Yes!
This entire album is always overlooked. It has a cache of hits: in my darkest hour, Mary Jane, set the world afire, hook in mouth. (Even 502 is a banger!)
My first Megadeth cassette in late 1980s
This was my 'in' to Megadeth, and I wore out two cassettes between 1987-89.
There was a period of time where I considered this Megadeth's BEST album and I still think it's top three.
I came here for this comment.
Mary Jane!!!
How do you miss Liar?
Great reaction. You guys should try Wake Up Dead. Great transitions.
Wake Up Dead is as good as anything from Rust in Peace. I agree this should be the next Megadeth react!
It's transition city
I think it's going to be their favourite
☝
Yes please do Wake Up Dead sometime soon. I think it will be playlist for you guys. It is short and sweet.
"Don't try to understand. Knowing you, I'm probably wrong."
Great line.
This song has tons of great lines.
Loneliness is not only felt by fools.
@@insufferablethrashelitist9305 I’m partial to “you just laughed hahah, BITCH”
..you just laughed.. hahaha...you bi#ch....thats my favorite line.
GOD I love how Dave just comes unhinged from the "Time has a way of taking time" part onward. It's probably my favorite part of his entire catalogue.
The guitar solo sounds like chaos, madness, insanity.
@@AngelTorres-lk9zz Exactly what it’s supposed to portray. Pure chaos and frustration
loneliness is not only felt by fools
This resonates so deep... he wrote lyrics about feelings we can all relate to.
The solo at the end.. the guitar is screaming emotion... it expresses ecstasy.. agony.. pain.. just listen to it again.. it will grow on you to the point you'll see it as the masterpiece it is..
Yes!
For the first times hearing it I was almost sure they must have had a guest performance by Rocky George from Suicidal Tendencies there.
Pretty sure Jeff Young did the solo at the end
PLEASE LISTEN PLEASE!! Need to do WAKE UP DEAD! You two will LOVE the transitions (as you like to call them)!! Also, it only have a couple lines of lyrics...it's a MUSICAL journey! (not the remastered version)
Fuckin this!!
That is one of my favorites along with good morning Black Friday
Damn they haven't done Wake Up Dead yet? I'm jealous of them
I love that not one section of that is repeated, each part of the song is it's own piece then on to the next till the end.
I don’t know if they will love it
The music to the song was written directly after Dave heard about Cliff’s passing. He sat down with a big pile of drugs and wrote the song in one sitting. The lyrics, are about his ex fiancé Diana. Lots of songs were written about Diana, “Wake up Dead” “Tornado of Souls” “Loved to Deth” are all about her
Really u think he done lots of drugs doing this
Time has a way of taking time,
Loneliness is not only felt by fools.
This song has some of my favorite lyrics ever. Glad you guys checked it out.
Did you ever think to stop thinking
You're the only one that I'm thinking of.
Some high level lyrics on this one indeed❤
Dave mustaine is militaristic with the music. That’s what makes megadeth who they are. No mistakes and the music is on point every single note. I have been listening to them since 1987-88 can’t exactly remember because it’s a long time ago but I was a young teenager and pissed at the world and these guys made life so much better. Love megadeth!!!
If the Conjuring is peak Megadeth for you guys, then maybe another track from 'Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?' might be the direction for the next one. 'Good Mourning/Black Friday' is one of the songs from that album that is regularly suggested in the comments.
Edit: Wanted to add a couterpoint added in one of the replies by J Mastodon: Suggesting this song is senseless. Everyone know they're not keen on thrash beats.
Yes!
Or Wake up Dead.
Nop, wake up dead!!!!
I'll second GM/BF 🎸
Yes! This is my jam on Peace Sells.
My favorite song on this album is Set the World Afire. I know you guys would love it!
Instrumental Into the Lungs of Hell is just incredible…
The first song Dave wrote after Metallica fired him. Its was written on the bus after Dave saw the word 'megadeath' on a newspaper. It's a unit of casualties after a nuclear, meaning one millions deaths.
Arguably the best thing they ever did imo :-)
Definitely listen to Megadeth's first song, Set The World Afire, because I would love to see the reactions to the band's first ever song. But please listen to Into The Lungs Of Hell, a minute and a half instrumental song, just right before you listen to it.
The short intro to Set The World Afire are The Ink Spots I Don't Want To Set The World on Fire from 1938. Also used in Fallout 3. The Ink Spots were the first African Americans to perform on American television in 1936 and the first black performers to appear on Ed Sullivan Show in 1948
The "transitions" you love so much are a result of the songwriters use of phrasing. They construct a "phrase", the chorus, verse, section of a solo, whatever, and those are tied together through modulation, dynamics, time signature and other musical tools. Just giving you another piece of terminology to use. Black Sabbath, Van Halen....part of why they're so great is their great phrasing. It's awesome to see people experience and enjoy music!
P.S. The drummer on this track, Chuck Behler, was a family friend when I was a kid. The first drumset I ever played was his.
Wake up dead with LOG needs to be in the conversation here.
thats awesome
"Wake up dead" and "Hook in mouth" are thrash classics you must listen to
This has probably already been explained, but I'll do it just in case: It's not about Cliff, it's about his ex.
Dave said that when he heard about Cliff he got really sad, went in to his room and just played guitar. Some of the song, especially the start, is what came out.
Yeah, that was my understanding also: not about Cliff's death, but initially triggered by it and the fact that he heard about it through the grapevine instead of from James and/or Lars directly.
It was dedicated to him, but it is not about Cliff
Man…
Maybe it was that Dave was mourning Cliff's death and needed his girlfriend's love and support which she was unable or unwilling to give. I've been there and I have seen it happen to other people.
Dave said in his biography that this song is about Cliff...
The song wasn’t about Cliff Burton. It was inspired by his death. When Dave heard about Cliff dying, he said he picked up his guitar and wrote it in “one fell swoop”. The lyrics are about breaking up with a girlfriend.
Megadeth are the jazz masters of Metal! That's how II see it, they can do things in their songs that no other band is able to do and make it sound this insane!Brilliant musicians powered by the mighty Mustaine!
Even Scott Ian called them "the jazz band of the Big Four". Their musicianship is unmatched in thrash.
I think it comes from Chris Poland and Gar. They learned Metal from Dave and brought that Jazz style to the table. I ain't superstitious is a good example even if its more blues.
To me, it's the lyrics that makes this song special. Also, when listening to the album in sequence, the next song (Liar) start, fits perfectly with the end of this song.
except that was written about his drug addict band mate...
In My Darkest Hour is definitely a slower burn. I always liked it but it never topped my lists until probably ten years after first hearing it. It's one of my favorites now but if music isn't a 'grower' for you then you may never think highly of it.
It is definitely a slow burn.
Well said, some my favourite and longest lasting tracks are the ones that took me 10 years to see how good they actually are
Lol I read your comment before getting far into the vid and the way you were saying it, I thought they weren't going to dig it. Glad they did
This dropped when I was 16, and man, I loved this tune and especially the lyrics. 'Huh, you're not there...'
I am surprised that no one has mentioned this yet, but this is the re-recorded version of the album made in the 2000s. They cut down the reverb in the sound, completely redid the guitars and also re-recorded the drum tracks. It may technically sound better, but the over the top 80s reverb of the original will always be my fave. If you guys have time off camera, have a listen to both versions. I think this one sounds more precise, but a little lifeless in comparison to the original.
Dude, I remember the first time I listened to the original version of the song, the thing that stuck with me the MOST was, weirdly enough, the snare sound. It just THUNDERS compared to the remaster, and I can never yes enough of it
Yeah, remasters are typically an improvement, but Dave messed em up big time.
I also hate the re-recorded version of a toute le monde. Noting against lacuna coil or female vocalists, it wasn't broke and didn't need to be fixed.
Even if sound production wasn't as good (maybe don't blow your studio money on heroin), Dave got then right the first time.
Re-recorded or Remastered?
@@APAL880 Dave remastered a bunch of albums, but he re-recorded a tout le monde for re-release on a later album, so I was referring to both. There are two versions of the same song on two different albums.
@@insufferablethrashelitist9305 some of the remasters nothing really changed, some had dramatic changes, and now trying to find the pre.re.masters is a bitch
Don't worry mate, after a year or two you wont get over how perfect Mustaine's voice is for Megadeth
This song is so heavy..as an emotional song ..the lyrics go perfect with that music ..it’s a perfect song
I’m a big Megadeth fan, and “In My Darkest Hour” is a top 5 song by them imo.
Same.
It's up there for me too! Awesome jam!
I prefer melodic, melancholic metal songs like this, and this is probably the best of them. Its full of emotion, but it has faster, rougher parts too, with perfect transitions between them, and perfect solos. Its a symphony. A lot of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden songs are like this, maybe Rammstein to some extent, but Megadeth is something else. This song probably sounds best if listened too multiple times, while feeling down a bit.
Megadeth is my favorite band of all time and I appreciate how much attention you've given them.
omg we have so much in common
+1
Same
i mean, if you love metal, then Megadeth should be top 3 in your favorite bands. It´s number 1 for me, of course.
@@huguito8607 Megadeth isn’t even in my top 10, you don’t speak for everyone
This is one of those tracks that continues to grow and grow every time you listen to it... Even after all these years. A truly special, inspired song.
It's not prime Peace Sells & Rust In Peace carnage, but something else....
Darkest hour? .....FINEST hour more like.
I might be only one of few but I LOVED the Cryptic Writings album, especially Trust, Use The Man, and The Disintegrators (beware, high pitch Dave), and She-Wolf
You're not alone lol it's the two albums after Cryptic Writings that loses most people. Risk and The World Needs A Hero. Dave brings it back together with The System Has Failed! First track is crazy good
@@OduThickness Okay. I'm really not alone because I feel the same way about The System Has Failed. Haha I just never hear them get the praise I feel they deserved.
One of my favorites from them. She Wolf is excellent!
I love cryptic writings, it’s one of my favorite albums
I like it too and trust is gooood , also my favorite in the album is A Secret Place
The jazz rhythm on the first 2 Megadeth albums are mainly due to Gar Samuelson the drummer and Chris Poland the other guitar player. They were both on the first 2 Megadeth albums and they came from a jazz fusion background.
Please listen to "Good Mourning/Black Friday"! Definitely one of their best songs.
You guys would LOVE Wake Up Dead. Some sick grooves and very catchy. Make it your next Megadeth song!
Now when I die for you, My Flesh still crawls as I breath your name....
That line in this song is the most powerful one for me.
The end solo is meant to express the chaos and turmoil his life was in after the breakup.
I felt that
Wasnt it about the death of cliff burton?
@@oharryc no
The Conjuring is one of my all time favorite reactions by you guys. I love that you brought that back as a little surprise in this one :)
You know it sounds like the metal version of The Devil went down to Georgia and lost a guitar duel to Dave Mustaine.
Seeing them vibe and slap an invisible ass to the groove was very wholesome indeed.
My absolute favorite Megadeth song.
Megadeth is like a jazz band playing Metal, with all the twists and turns.
Looking Down The Cross is an underrated masterpiece that I think you guys would love
I've never seen this song recommended online. This and Five Magics are my two favorite songs.
Peak Megadeth. Imo it's better than most stuff on any album. My top 3 Megadeth songs are Looking Doen The Cross, Good Mourning/Black Friday and Lucretia

This is one of my favorite Megadeth songs. I find your guy's take on this song to be interesting. I really think that you would love Wake Up Dead. I know others have been asking you to do that Megadeth song, and I agree.
Totally agree, they will love the riffs in Wake Up Dead!
Just stumbled across this channel from Derek Brooks compilations. Huge Megadeth fan, so awesome to see someone finally do a reaction to my favorite Megadeth song! Thank you! The way it builds and builds as you see the anger at the betrayal come more in focus is just epic.
You guys would love "Victory" off Youthanasia. Its a great call back to past songs and has a ton of great guitar solo work from Dave and Marty. Keep rocking guys!!!🤟
They just need to do whole youthanasia album review lol
My fav that one
Lucretia is definitely something you need to check out, from Rust in Peace
This is definitely in my top 5 Megadeth songs.
Definitely
I like watching your guy's first impressions of the music I've listened to for fifteen years because it reminds me why I listen to it. Things I take for granted now give me goosebumps. Love seeing you guys headbang. Cheers from LA.
I'm going to watch 10 of your videos and have a shot everytime you say transition
keep up the good work guys!
This is a VERY underrated album
Yes, it is.
I agree! Love all Megadeth’s albums, but this one seems to rarely get mentioned. No idea why. Every track on the album is a speed/thrash metal classic to me.
The main reason being that the mixing is pretty rough on it. Other than that it really is a solid album that gets overlooked pretty often. That mixing though.....sheesh.
Damn. They were talking during my favorite part of the song. "You Just Laughed, HA, HA (with Laughing Guitar), BITCH!"
Same! In my twenties it was my favorite breakup song - rather than feeling down and maudlin I would listen to this and feel empowered! "Ha Ha Bitch!"
Almost every Megadeth song is top class.
they did exactly what they wanted, when they wanted to. both with their music and the way they acted, and thats why megadeth will always be a favorite of mine
I grew up trying to avoid Megadeth for some reason and I've never heard this song, so this is my first time hearing it. I love it. Def playlist.
People dismiss them because of the vocals, but I think their catalogue really surprises people when they do give it a chance. I also cannot imagine most Megadeth songs without Dave's snarl, for me it's like complaining about punk vocals. You know what you're getting.
The whole album is good
"Time...

of taking time!"
I love that line.
I finally get to see the and Lamb of God in Tulsa 4/30 ❤️
@@leerobbo92 I like his voice over James Hatfield's, I always have
The best live version I ever saw of this song was in 2004 and they played Holywars then instead of the punishment is due they tore right into In My Darkest hour then went right into the punishment is due. Just one big epic song and I was standing there going HOLYFUCK! 😲 Live Megadeth just pummel the audience.
Is there a way to watch that version online?
Your phrase "seamless transitions" is why this is my favorite Megadeth album. These songs are not 'verse, chorus, verse" dittys, but a musical journey. If you want to hear more of those seamless transitions check out Set the World Afire or the unsung masterpiece Mary Jane.
Another outstanding episode.
Cheers!

Ryan speaks over the best parts of the song, almost every time. He definitely did it on this song at 20:09 .
Yeah... I was waiting for their reaction on the "Haha, Bitch!" LoL
Every damn time! Misses all the good parts
Oh No! I was so looking forward to that moment in the song. 🙈
Exactly, he is talking a lot
It's their reaction. If you want to just listen to the song, then just listen to the song.
Don't go around too much, George, this is a great Megadeth song, as amazing in every way, shape and form as any other Megadeth son. The emotional part of it, it's incredible; how it begins hard but soft (as Ryan said) at the same time and how it takes a faster and faster pace, then it ends on a "melt down face" way as you said it Megadeth is. I mean, the transitions the riffs, you name it. I know it's gonna be hard for you to "love" the song, but listen to it once more, as you said you would.
As for Ryan, he just got the song, just that. It's just a beautiful song.
Ole, ole y ole!!!! At last my favorite song reacted by you, pals!!!! Saludos desde España

In My Darkest Hour - helped me thru rough times numerous times. Great song. Ty for the video
Rust in Peace is easily my favorite Megadeth album... but this is my absolute favorite megadeth song. Probably a controversial opinion but IMO this is daves magnum opus.
As Ryan touched on, this song has everything in it. its proggy. the emotions change throughout the song. and the lyrics are S tier.
I second that- it's magnificent
The version you are playing almost sounds like a demo compared to the one on the album I have.
A song you should really listen to is "The scorpion". It's a kick ass song with awesome lyrics!

@@ssbsnb1200 wtf nooooo. Today I learned that my favourite Megadeth lyric was wrong. I mean it's still pretty badass but... not as badass as I had thought. Maybe I can use my misinterpreted lyric in a song
Hey guys. I’m a huge fan of yours. I appreciate everything you do for the music community. Today (3/29) is my dad’s birthday. We lost him almost ten years ago. He was a great man. He’s one of the biggest reasons why I love music so much. One artist he loved is Santana. He saw him live twenty-five times. If it’s possible, would you guys be able to react to a Santana song, maybe Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen ? I think you guys would really enjoy it. I’d greatly appreciate it. Thank you, have a great day, & be safe
Love your show, all the time!
I love this song so much! When I was in college as an RA, I had this song on repeat many many days. I even name-dropped this song in a slam poem I did back in the day
Having heard all megadeth songs and all your megadeth reactions, i think you would really enjoy the following ones. In no particular order:
Take no prisoners, hook in mouth, Mary Jane, set the world afire, skull beneath the skin.
Would certainly be interesting to see Ryan and George react to Set The World Afire if nothing else.
I personally think they should hit some Countdown to Extinction. They haven't touched a song off that yet. Such a classic album.
Countdown to Extinction is one y'all haven't even touched yet! Symphony of Destruction is one of their classics as is Sweating Bullets. I'll be waiting....
In My Darkest Hour is a masterpiece. It's literally one of their best songs, I don't know what George it's talking about. Just because he likes certain elements from other songs doesn't mean that anything else can be less impressive or enjoyable. This song has some of the best riffs in their entire discography. Watching Ryan get hyped was great though!! Love this song.
I was thinking the same!🤘
The dude likes skull smashing fire breathing speed metal Megadeth. Nothing wrong with that. This is a good song but it’s pretty tame for Megadeth (at least at the time) until the last minute or two.
@@Wanderlust073 it's tame for megadeth and it's tame as far as any isolated song goes by itself. But placed in between a bunch of other great songs it fits perfectly. I think context is important sometimes and isolated songs don't bring that.
@@jesuswhatever I agree. I think they miss out a bit by not doing full album listens but it’s still a fun channel to watch. It does kill me when they choose to pause though. Inevitably he stops the music just as it is reaching a crescendo. Guy must have perpetual musical blue balls lol.
@@Wanderlust073 hahaha "perpetual musical blue balls" yeah I agree.. often I have to go listen to the song after watching the guys because I feel frustrated. But I get why they stop it, not hating on that. I think they also listen to the songs in full afterwards too, probably before the closing statements.
Its Sweet and Sour. the 2 Daves really create one hell of a melody for every song.
You guys crack me up and I love your appreciation and love of metal music and of course music in general. I appreciate you guys always given it a chance and allowing yourself to feel the melodies and heaviness that thrash/speed metal can offer. I was 17 in my senior of high school when my friend and I picked up this tape the day it dropped we then would sing this song to our buddies daily for several weeks who sat in front of us and were big metal fans but were not into Megadeth yet and we tried to "enlighten" them... Lol. I ended up seeing them in concert on their tour that year in Detroit. In my Darkest Hour is a frickin awesome song but definitely one that is that beautiful meger of a ballad and heaviness and some speed too. Ironically The Conjuring is possibly my all time favorite Megadeth song but of course that is tough with so many ripping songs to choose from. Keep having fun fellas!
I'm probably the odd man out, but this is my favorite Megadeth album. Rust in Peace is perfection, but I groove to this album more.
Nice video guys! Real reactions once again. Megadeth has a unique discography with interesting songs. If you listen to Dystopia, a song on their latest album also called Dystopia, you can hear that despite the unique discography they have always remained consistent with the technique, transitions etc. One of their more melodic songs is Breadline from the album Risk. Might be worth a listen to capture the diversity of the band.
I really, really love Megadeth.
You bros are badass! Love every video. Keep bangin bros!!!!!!
One of the songs that helped me through my first breakup was this. And it honestly is a song I'd sing for her just so she could know how I feel
I highly suggest Mary Jane, or Set the World Afire from this album. My personal favorite might be hook in mouth, but I don't think you guys will like that one 😆
Luke is right. Mary Jane, Hook in Mouth, and Darkest Hour are absolutely top notch on SFSGSW - up to the Megadeth standard. The album needed just a little bit more to rank up there with Peace Sells and Rust in Peace.
The first song on So Far, the instrumental, Into The Lungs Of Hell, that is a musical masterpiece that exemplifies the late '80s shred / thrash dynamic. Guitar virtuosity and flashy playing was huge, especially since EVH changed the guitar world for awhile. Those that were their will remember.
Dude I love you guys I'm starting to dissect songs again because I'm a musician also I love your commentaries your energy and your love for music man God bless you
This album needs more love, its their best one.
Early Megadeth is my favorite! Please do “Hook In Mouth”…you’ll both dig that one!!!
Hey yo! You guys are great, thanks so much for bringing us all together! Would love to see an Industrial segment, I feel it's a genre that's been left out. Keep thinking freely!
such a pleasure to mind melt with fellow music lovers, Lost in Vegas gets it! "Set the World Afire" is a 10/10
Man would you all do “train of consequences” please !! Either do that one or do she-Wolfe
2 of my favorite songs. You won’t go wrong there. So many great megadeth songs !
I want you to do "Good Mourning / Black Friday"...
for the intro, cause it is incredible, and then to see if you can dig the thrashiness after...
They performed this song for the Documentary “Decline Of The Western Civilization 2” at the Country Club in Reseda in 1988. I was there with about another 100 people for 6+ hours while they did take after take of this one song. Good times.
The music was inspired by Cliff's death and the lyrics about that girlfriend
You should do more Iron Maiden. Definitely a legendary band. Try Phantom of the Opera
As an 18 year old kid in 1988 bombarded by power ballads and posers….the ending of this song is THE explosion we all needed it to be. Perfection.
100%
You can feel how much pain and emotions went into that epic, simply an honest song about loss and grief.
I sure hope to see you guys at the Megadeth concert in Vegas this weekend.
