The best tip I can give new video game collectors might be an obvious one but it's something I wish I realised very early on. It's taken me nearly 2 years to work it out but finally I can start focusing on what I really like.
Don't let anyone tell you what you should be collecting. Just because someone likes Nintendo games, doesn't mean you have to like them as well. If you want to collect Call of Duty and FIFA, do it!

my tip would be: have a defined and reasonable goal from the beginning. Know what console of games you want, what genres, what releases, and in what condition. Maybe you only want to collect Sony, maybe it's Nintendo. Maybe you only want survival horror CIB original releases, or maybe you want to collect demo discs. Just be aware that it's insanely easy to get distracted by finding a bunch of cheap games for a console you don't collect for and suddenly you now collect for that console too

I agree with only collecting what you play. That's what I do, only collect what I have played or will play for 360, One, Series X. I did not realise why I had nostalgia for 360 until your comment about being able to buy what you wanted, as that was the same for me. I guess we are a similar age.

I think there are 2 types of collectors. The ones who collect games that they want to play, and the ones that collect for the sake of it and often go for complete sets. That's what makes wii-u and Dreamcast so appealing. It's a doable task to get complete sets for those, whereas I've never seen anyone with a complete PS2 collection

    • @b4rs629
      @b4rs629 4 месяца назад +2

Yup. I totally agree. The second type is hoarder mentality with no sense of keeping a curated library of games that actually mean something to them.
Every game I have my shelf is reflection of my interests and very few of them are games I bought and just didn't like.

@@b4rs629 While I do agree that a collector should get games that are of interest to that person, sometimes it is good to branch out and try something different. There really are no right or wrong ways to collect. A collector looking to complete a collection sees the library as a goal much like other collectors see finding a single game that they desire. The argument could be made that completionists are preventing gamers that want a certain game from having it...but how do we know that the game in question isn't one that the completionist enjoys as well. Perhaps the games that the completionist is hoarding are actually crap games that nobody would want otherwise.

I am 26 years old and I am starting to collect video games. I only have a couple of games for the PS3, which was the first console that ever came to my house. It wasn't even mine, but it was fun to remember how I used to wait for my uncles to finish playing so that I could play. • @CarefulAtheist
    @CarefulAtheist 3 месяца назад

I never collected. Collecting stuff was a by-product of getting physical media for the thing I was getting my entertainment from. The first collection of mine that got fleshed out considerably was around 2009 when a video store was closing down close to us. They were selling their rental stock of PS2 games for next to nothing. Like...the equivalent of $8 for 5 at the time. So I built a 50 game collection that way. Then I got a PS3 very late...around 2013. Up until Nov 2023 I only had 16 physical PS3 games as the rest were all digital downloads. At the same time I also only had 2 physical PS4 games as, again, digital game purchases were a thing for me. But I am 47 years old with 2 young sons who inherited my love for gaming. Two months ago I set out to collect for the PS3 and PS4, and if I could find games on PS2 I always wanted, but never got, I would take those too. I set out to find the following, for all 3 consoles: a) Games I played before, but dont have physical copies of (just in case console servers are discontinued at some point). (b) Game sI know of, wanted to play, but never did. (c) looking at various top 50 and top 100 videos for all the consoles and picking the ones that interested me, and I didnt have. With that methodology I set out to create a "wants" list. And then I got into buying. On some days my wife got so tired of accepting packages at the door as I received 8 of them on one day recently...some with 2 games, some with 7. Now I have 70 games in my PS2 collection, 130 in my PS3 collection, and 70 in my PS4 collection...with a Rockbank guitar to boot. lol. I'm now at a weird junction where I need to think of designing a game storage cupboard with the correct-sized shelves for each console. I RAN OUT OF SPACE TO KEEP THEM!

Unfortunately, game collecting or rather collectors are very different from any other collector.
By this, i mean.... People that love trainers, i have many pals that buy trainers and they buy the ones they
    Want
    Like
    That are comfortable
That look good and they wear them.
People buy football tops because they have a passion for a kit, team and most of the time wear them, or just buy one top and not multiples.
People that buy or collect music albums, they buy the artists they like, the genre of music they like, their favourite band, DJ.... Whatever.
People that collect movies, they collect VHS, DVD's, BluRays of the movies they enjoy, or movies of the past that make them remember old times.
But gaming and game collectors, they don't do it for just the passion, they do it too be greedy, show off or the hope too make money.
Iv'e seen so many people on here, have rooms full of crap, hundreds of games they never played or will never play, but they own them just too have a full set or just because it is expensive.
I hate these people that don't own just one N64 or NES.... PS whatever...... but they own 20 of each console.... They brag that they own 20, show all the colours they own and the consoles just sit there and rot in a box..... Whats the point?
I used too have all the PS consoles, all the Xbox consoles, i had the Jaguar, 3DO..... Never used them.
So i just sold the lot to someone that loves PLAYING older games.
Now i own the Series X, PS5 and PC.... the games i buy are the games i play.
Just so sad that video game collecting has become more of a valuable competition of who owns what and how many of each, rather than people buying consoles and games because they want too play them!

This is the best comment I've ever seen on RUclips, about game collecting, honestly. My method of buying, is meant to be for playing the games I wanna play, but then most of the time I've bought too much, but I never play what I buy. But I don't consider myself a collector at all, I just have a big "collection". Agreed with everything you said though really, I just find it hard to pick a game off my shelf, when there's so many, it's actually called something when you have so many choices, but don't end up choosing, it has an actual name/phrase for it, but I've forgotten lol. I literally don't understand why people want full sets of games, for them to sit on shelves and do nothing. At least consider choosing 1 to sit down and play, instead of just having them to look at to massage your ego etc. Anyways, I'd rather let people get on with it now, it's up to x person what they do, but I'm firmly on the side of disagreement. It not only drives prices up, stops someone else from trying it out, makes x game harder to find and it ruins shopping experiences too, mainly down to it being harder to find.

Very true! For game collecting it seems to be about the chase and thrill or completing a set for a console, abit like collecting pokemon cards, putting games on a shelf and looking at them. Wheres the fun in that? Gamers play games, having a shelf full of games you have never played seems like a waste to me

I don't go out of my way to collecting anything and everything underneath the sun & moon... ba dum tss...
These video game / system collectors who collect every variant of a console on top of complete a video game collection for any given console are borderline hoarders almost... it's like they're trying to open up their own museum of retro games.

What I do is I collect a game in the moment to play, which can include older & newer games (PS2 & PS5 for example) I will play the game & after getting fed or completing it, I will keep to form part of my collection. To add on to the holy grails advice, if it's particularly rare and you happen to find it, try and wait if the price would be a big blow to your funds. There was a solid month and a half where Dynasty Warriors Gundam Reborn for PS3 just wasn't in stock anywhere, I saw it go up on ebay for £160 and pounced on it, months later there's a few copies in Cex for £70, devestating.

For me the ps1-ps3 were my golden age of gaming. I still play both the ps4 and ps5 but to me those later 2 generations were just never as good or had as many fun experiences as those 3. I try to collect them but the ps1-ps2 games are becoming more expensive to find and get these days, especially cause in my area there were not as many originals as most people just bought the bootleg chip and played copy burn discs and the fact the nostalgia factor has played and now it is getting more expensive to get these days. So im focusing on the ps3 mostly, As those are the cheapest and people are not as into getting them right now. However even that generation only has a limited window left before they too start to soar in prices, some of the more limited and low sellers already are rising in value.

Anyone thinking on starting to collect should first make a quick calculation on how much they're willing to spend VS how much will the collection itself cost. I'm pretty sure many start collecting only to give up very early on due to the cost and research required to get the best deals. My suggestion is to invest in either modded consoles + ROMs or just emulators + ROMs. I prefer modded consoles with Everdrives or ODEs, but I know emulators will be the only option in the future when consoles start failing (and they will FAIL), which means having physical games will be kinda worthless on a gamer point of view.
On a side note: you mentioned why have older consoles when you can play remakes/remasters on the newer consoles? Well call it nostalgia, but I prefer to play the originals on the original consoles they were made for, and use the newer consoles for new games, sequels and/or IPs. Remakes/remasters might look prettier, but most of the times they're not enough to scratch that nostalgia itch under the skin.

Actually the biggest tip I can give someone is do your homework. Research . Learn the history of what you want to start collecting and research rather its a console or video game. Never just rely on social media since a lot of people don't even know what there talking about. There is no right or wrong answer in what you should start collecting. I started by relieving my childhood and buying games that I had owned or played, and of course now and then buying less common games. The more you research in retro video games and consoles and even the current ones you'll be way more knowledgeable and can better make better choices and what to look out for without getting ripped off.

My advise don't start collecting. If all you want to do is play the games just get the roms. I recommend the Analogue Pocket & Dock to play those roms.

    • @javierestrada8249
      @javierestrada8249 3 месяца назад

Yes you can play roms but it's not a guarantee that the ROM will be any good. You can play roms and be far in a game until that rom starts acting up and makes it become unplayable. Nothing beats actual real game.

    Very valid points !
Some of them I learnt harder way ;)
I come from the former communist regime central europe country. This means that for most of the consoles I have absolutely zero nostalgy.
In my country we all had ZX Spectrum, Commodore C64 and later Amiga - common ground - all of these games could be pirated. Nobody had NES, SNES, Megadrive. Later, in my country they finally introduced copyright but still, majority of gamers switched to PC. Some of the people started to have PSX. But later it was again about PC - 3d accelerators made that there was this short period where games on PC looked much, much better - so the amount of users playing Gamecube, PS2, Dreamcast, WII was also very, very limited.
    What's the point ?
Just collect games for the console you just like, have positive emotions. It doesn't have to be nostalgy.
About two years ago I started collecting Nintendo Switch games because I had Switch Lite and I really, really liked it, I could appreciate how (the original) Switch was designed etc. So, all in all, I have like 160-170 games and I happily buy some every month.
My second most liked console is ... Xbox 360. I bought it like 8-9 months ago, plugged in to the TV and I love it because of all these games from hmm ie. 2013 that many of them you can play on PC but they didn't support gamepad or started to have these weird stupid launchers. So, again, I like the console, played few games and I'm just expanding my collection just for fun.
Also, consider your country history. Like I said, in my country, nobody had NES, SNES etc. so the amount of games available on marketplaces etc. is really, really limited. As a result such games are horribly expensive. As a result, I don't have fun collecting these.
I collect Super Famicom games though ;p because on a marketplace there is one particular guy who imports gaming stuff from Japan. I buy these games purely for the boxes - don't have Super Famicom, games are rather cheap. I have maybe 15-20 of them - it gives me fun ;)
DS, 3DS ? I have some games but this is exact same reason as for NES or SNES or later Gamecube - in my country these were simply too expensive consoles. Almost nobody could afford it. I love these, I have DS Lite, DSi, 3x DSI XL ;p, 3ds XL, but after i collected hmm aroudn 50-60 of these games, I realised that they're a bit too expensive too me and I just "don't feel it". Maybe it was because of my trip to Amsterdam, when I realised that 10 EUR used DS game costs in my country 20 EUR ;p Even if cartridge is my most favourite storage to collect, I prefer to just buy another Nintendo Switch game rather than (overpriced) 3ds or ds.
I could probably use it for business, importing, flipping but purely for collecting stuff, buying Xbox 360 games is so much cheaper.
I like PSP collecting too but this is because of some nostalgy - at this point of time, my country started to be more developed, as a result some of my friends started to have PSP. But I only collect original boxes, not these ridiculous awful one ;p
I don't know why but for PS2 I don't care at all. I have like 20 of these games and I feel exactly nothing. I didn't have PS2, I didn't even play anything on PS2, never had a friend with PS2. It's hard to collect anything if you are totally detached from it emotionally :) Same goes from PS4 - I have some sealed games, some limited, bought mostly because of some big discounts but I feel completely nothing.
    All In all I collect:
    - Nintendo Switch
    - Xbox 360 (even if It had CD format ;p)
    - PSP
    - Super Famicom
    - DS / 3DS - from these I would most probably have ton of fun too, because overall I like the physical devices, I love cartridges but these are simply too expensive in my country.
BUT I needed to learn this with my money.
ps. for wii it is weird. I have / had hacked wii, loved it, some games are amazing but maybe that's the problem - to me there are few games (wiimote designed) that define Wii, all of the other seem like hmm unnecessary complication (I mean now in 2024). As a result after buyin 2-3 games I quickly realised that is isn't for me. Most probably in my had, WII is ... party console to play ping pong or something with friends ;) So in 99,9 % scenarios I prefer to just turn on Xbox360.

I dont think you're a collector at all. You see this as an investment for future profit. As we have seen in older videos you have no hesitation in selling things and you flip things for profit 😂

because his objective is a FREE video game collection? nobody has to collect every game or collect the way YOU think is valid and makes them a collector.
honestly i have games in my wii u collection i would get rid of because i just dont like the game, my collection wants to be personalised, and i want games that i WILL play or that i want physically.
im assuming you haven’t even bothered watching his series on this - he flips games because there’s games he doesn’t want in his collection, so that he can buy stuff he’s ACTUALLY going to play

Isn’t that part of collecting anything? You’ll acquire games which are pricy and hold value which will only go up over time. I have expensive games which I’ll probably end up selling in 3-5 years which I’ll make more money on 🤪🤡

Xbox consoles will never be for collectors. Microsoft is always antagonistic to physical media in a way Nintendo and Sony are not. Thats why games for Xbox are so cheap

Yea I grew up on Nintendo consoles & handhelds. I enjoy buying games for the switch that are from my youth like Advanced Wars 1+2.
I totally agree. I like xbox games, but the newer xbox one generation that's been going for a decade is not fun to collect for at all due to being crossplatform with Sony, pc, & nintendo.
I still have some physical xbox one x games cuz' gamepass while it seems like a good value for most people... just ain't worth it for the few games I play on the system.
