  • With the E-Shop closing down for the Nintendo 3DS, game prices are about to see a noteworthy bump in the physical market. Since Nintendo announced this storefront closure so far in advance, I've been slowly yet steadily amassing some pickups to show off to all of you today.

Or when physical copies of a game are ridiculously overpriced. There are a bunch of older games that can cost upwards of $100-$300+ for a standard physical copy, which is absurd. That's why emulation existing is such a good thing. Because when physical copies are no longer sold by the publisher and the games are not available on digital storefronts, piracy and emulation often end up being the only financially viable way to play games that otherwise would not be easily accessible to the general public. As nice as they may be, physical copies of a game can only go so far for preserving games for others to play.

All "World" copies are NTSC. So they work just fine on North American 3DS systems. Same thing with Canadian copies. Plus anything released in SEA region is almost always the NTSC version. There's a few other areas where the release is the NTSC and their 3DS systems also play games from the US (or really North American systems).
So there's no need for hacking your 3DS for those releases as they work natively provided you're in the US. However if in Europe...have to get anything from Europe, though with Luma 3DS you bypass the region lock, which was mentioned in the first response.

The Nintendo 3DS was a handheld console that offered a glasses-free 3D experience and a large library of quality games. Some of the best games on the system were:
    - The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, a sequel to the SNES classic that introduced a new mechanic of merging into walls and switching between two parallel worlds.
    - Fire Emblem Awakening, a turn-based strategy game with a rich story and characters that could form relationships and even have children.
    - Super Mario 3D Land, a platformer that combined elements from 2D and 3D Mario games and made clever use of the 3D effect.
    - Animal Crossing: New Leaf, a life simulation game where you became the mayor of a town full of animal villagers and customized it to your liking.
    - Metroid: Samus Returns, a remake of the Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus that added new abilities, enemies and areas to explore.
These are just some examples of the many great games that made the Nintendo 3DS an unforgettable console for many gamers.

The 3DS eshop provided me so many hours of fun games and browsing. We are gonna lose so many gems. Two that come to mind most are Fire Emblem Revelations and Dillon's rolling western. Revelations is a dlc only expansion for fire emblem fates which is basically the true path for the game with the best ending where most of the cast lives, now its only tied to an expensive special edition of fates. Rolling western was a fun tower defense where you would roam and beat up monsters alongside your towers, shame it hasnt gotten a switch game or port yet.

On the Steamdeck for ex. if you choose "side by side" in the screen options, both screens sit in the center of the display at roughly the size of an original 3ds display. There are a few basic options like that, one gives you two windows to adjust or move around.
How it actually runs will depend on the game. Some will have hiccups or stuttering. Citra, the site for the emulator, has a rating for most games on how they should run on the current build

Well, prices go up and down. Recently things have gone out of control, but if you look into general prices, they were forced down across the board. Even for the 3DS. A lot of games that 3~4 months ago were over 200, 300, even 400, are now near or just over 100. They'll spike right now, but in about 6 months, maybe 1 year...maybe a bit longer, they'll come down hard, because the market can only bear so much and it's not a solid tool to profit off of as the crypto bros who were janking up the prices by paying those exorbitant prices have left the building, many now eating their resale values from a few months ago due to sitting on it for almost a year now.

Advice to anyone buying physical 3ds games.
You are gonna want to test those.
My brother and I, sadly, have found some of our physical cartridges failing.
Now I have heard about this previously, particularly with Persona Q and ORAS copies dying.
In my case, it was my Persona Q copy that can no longer be read no matter what 3ds system i put it in. I only found out the other day, since I still managed to play it last December.
Now, my brother and I are real careful with our consoles and games. Both with storage and handling.
My brother has it much worse. With around 4 physical games he owns failing. Namely, 7th dragon code vfd, puzzle and dragons+mario, FE Fates conquest, and his copy of smash 4 on 3ds.
What's sad is that 7th dragon code vfd was brand new, he picked it up in brick and mortar sealed and never even got to play it once.
He only found out his copy was a dud since we were rushing to snap up dlc for all our games.
Now, I know you can homebrew the 3ds. That's not the point. We wanted to preserve as much of our 3ds experience as possible since my brother and I share an emotional attachment to the 3ds for various reasons.
And as we both prefer physical media, it sucks that our cartridges died so soon. We have DS cartridges twice the age that still run like the first time we played them.
So yeah. Your physical cartridges will die. That's just the brass tacks on the matter. I'll keep my cartridges as I always have but I'll probably look into purchasing a separate system to homebrew it for games that may die in my collection.

back when 3DS was still in retail my dad got me a preowned copy of Kid Icarus for I think $24 NZD, I'm really surprised at how much more expensive that game is now.
I gotta say though, as someone who is happy to own a copy and had a pretty great time with the game when I played it, I'm honestly confused where this new surge of love for the game came from? It's very good don't get me wrong, but I think people forget just how awkward the controls were, mostly on the land segments. I found numerous times that I was struggling either because the controls were uncomfortable or just straight up unwieldy, it made an otherwise really good game very frustrating.
That being said, I think this is compounded by the fact I'm left handed, which despite trying to account for this the game can't really accomodate for this. If only I could see if it worked with the circle pad pro!

It's really dumb that Nintendo is going to shut down the eShop for 3DS and Wii U. Obviously we knew it would happen after what happened with the Wii and DS but still, it's such a bad move and inflates the market. Calling it now though, I don't think this is the end of these games. One of 2 things will happen. Nintendo revives their handhelds or the next Nintendo console will have a peripheral that is required to play DS and 3DS games. It'll either be a seperete screen that attaches to the new tablet device and acts like a dual screen or they bring back the tablet controller design. There's no way DS and 3DS games are just gone now forever, Nintendo knows there's value in their retro games and there's money to be made from them.
Also, the world edition of 3DS games aren't too different from the first print releases aside from the obvious green circle. From what I can tell the contents are always the same, and the games that got world releases were games that didn't have manuals to begin with so you don't have to worry about not getting any extra goodies from the frist print release since it seems they're near identical aside from the green cirlce. They definitely are going to provide a cheaper alternative to those looking to buy some 3DS games for the next few years but with everything in the retro market, their cheap price won't be permanent.

I think there is another reason why pokemon games will go up in value for example X and Y have a really lazy side shiny hunt mechanic called the friend safari, its still one of the best duo shiny hunt methods there is and believe it or not there is still a big friendsafari community in which people trade out friend codes for more available pokemon. And oras will probably go up because its gen 3 and who doesnt love gen 3 am i right? For sun and moon.... I think ultra sun and moon will go up more even tho they arguably had a worse story, they still had better content and more challenges imo. And a singulair ultrabeast named Poipole isnt shiny huntable outside of ultra sun and moon which is another factor you could count in.
