Finally someone actually explains how to fix that common issue AND shows beginning to end on how to do it. Most other videos just explain it without actual props. Thank you good sir!
Skylar, Einstein of coin ring making. You and a few others are the elite of coin ring making, you guys are teaching this old dog some great tricks, I'm Flintstones now but looking to get to Jetsons one day. Thanks for all your help.
Hi Skyler, Great tutorial on a situation I find myself in! Thank you mate! Very much appreciated! Keep up the excellent work buddy! BRILLIANT!! Very helpful to us noobies 👍🏼
What I found to make my rings fold with the same shape around is to file the reed ridge that will be on the inside. Making it closer to the same thickness as the center of the coin. Doing this before any folding has started. Because it’s twice as thick as the center it makes it harder to fold.
Great video. Most my silver half kennedy come out with a wobble on the ridge side. Question: Can I use my 1 ton arbor press for your 3rd solution or is it not powerful enough? Thank you
You must get tired of telling people no, quenching it doesn’t harden it! I thought it would too the first time I saw you do it. Enjoy your videos. Hope to take a class some day. Travis
That was very cool. It appears there are a couple of methods available to correct issues. Seems like experience is the best teacher. Is that how you know how to correct something? Not just from understanding the end to end process, but being able to see where a mistake can happen and how to avoid it? Thanks for sharing!
A few of my very first attempts at coinring making turned out this way. I learned that the cause was that my 6 ton Harbor Freight press was not pushing straight down, has anybody had the same issue with the HF press?
The folding cone option looks awesome. I just purchased the 4 set plastic cones from Jason Works. Can I use these in place of the metal mandrel you used for straightening my rings? Thanks for these great videos.
Question. After punching and forming my initial cone, then starting to stretch my 1964 quarter the width of the band varies. What can I do to fix/prevent this? Tia for any advise.
Skyler - that last tip with the cone... Amazing! I've only been doing the 1st 2 things you demonstrated. That cone trick is now my new favorite method and I haven't even done it yet! Excellent job bud. Hey, pm me from the CRC room with your address. I've got a bumper sticker for you! I rock it on my vehicles and thought you might like it too for the shop or car!
My reducing plate holes on my ring stretcher are all too small for the rings I make. What is the degree of the reducing dies? Can I use a 17 degree die? Thanks
any suggestions for protecting inside of rings when your stretcher doesn't have a smooth mandrel , mine is stair stepped for the different sizes and seems to mark up the coin as you work it down even with the bag
I’m really struggling with wobbly and crooked coins at the moment! It’s like I end up with one side thicker than the other as soon as I do the initial fold. It’s like one side is squashed. If I can get that out then when I’m reducing later I seem to end up with an uneven press, one side is straight, the opposite has a tilt or the whole thing leans off centre. It’s really bugging me and I can’t work out what I’m doing wrong. I feel everything is lined up properly and I’m exerting equal pressure just one side is affected more - sorry for the rant just having a nightmare. Any ideas would be great! Thanks man, love the videos!
+Willanski It sounds like you might have an off centered hole, or your press isn't plumb. Either that or you are using that bad die plate that comes with the cheap ring stretchers. Any one if those issues could be causing your problem
Ok thanks. I recently bought some digital callipers and checked my hole punch. When measuring the hole to the edge of the punch I'm getting a variance of 0.1mm on one side. Would this be enough to throw it out? Thanks again Skyler
+Shekinah I like the crumple method for personal use but for business I must have the fold method. You don't want people thinking you are a wild animal!
how do you fix a coin ring that is wider on one side then the other. I think what I did wrong is that I did't punch the hole in the center, is there a way to fix the ring?
this is a total life saver, specially because I'm stuck trying to fix a canadian 2 and this is a total eye opener. I do have a small question, and it doesn't really have to do directly with the video's topic... I just wanted to know how did you create the contrast on the ring on the termination photo. the last picture of the video, what did you do to those rings to have those distinct dark lines on the engravings' corners? thanks in advance ^_^
Thanks! The dark is done with liver of sulphur gel. And 0000 steel wool or a sanding block. Check out my newest Morgan dollar video or walking liberty video to see exactly how to get it.
I'm using a dapping block for reducing the ring and always get it tilted. As far as I can tell my presses are square. What am I missing? I could really need some help on what causes the tilt and how to prevent it so I don't need to fix it in the first place. Thanks
@@CoinRingsfromTheMint thanks for the offer but for me living in Germany calling is not an option as numbers outside Germany are really pricey. Maybe you can do a video about the most widespread mistakes in coin ring making.
@@Omikron99 Check out my video on fixing a wobbly ring. That will give you the main ways of fixing and possibly avoiding that issue. A dapping block will have more issues than a proper die for sure.

Question. After punching and forming my initial cone, then starting to stretch my 1964 quarter the width of the band varies. What can I do to fix/prevent this? Tia for any advise.
