Just a couple of thoughts. It looked to me like Huska was looking at next year to some degree down the stretch. I think the Kadri/Pospisil/Kuzmenko line will be a thing going into next year. They kept getting better every game and were looking dangerous every night. I also wonder if Huska was looking at Zary (at C) with Huberdeau as a possible twosome to start next season. Zary is a really smart player and maybe somewhat "pliable" as a rookie still finding his way. I think it makes sense to see if he and Hubey can find some chemistry and/or Zary just adapt to Hubey's tendencies. If they worked well together it could help Hubey play up to his cap hit or at least get closer A sniper would be good on that line. Maybe Sharongovich? Coronato? Mang, Sharon and Kuzmenko are going into contract years, so hopefuly they can extend Sharongovich this summer. Mange and Kuzmenko are too old to cough up the $ and term they will want as UFAs imo, so I think they should be dealt at the deadline. I also think Markstrom should and will be traded. His value isn't going up, and as you say he isn't getting any younger. NJ will be one suitor, but I am sure there will be others. If he is gone and the Flames go with Wolfie and Vladar we will be a lottery team again. Especially if those two (above)are traded at the deadline. All in my humble opinion. I also wanted to mention that CGY's 2025 first is lottery protected. Based on the conditions the Flames will be coughing up Fla's first round pick in 2025 unless they are a lottery team. If they are, the Flames have to worry about their 2026 first round pick, because it isn't protected.
We're still a year or two out from trying to contend again i think. Conroy has to fix up the defense this offseason though because it got pretty brutal for the last half of the season once Tanev and Hannifin were traded.
Ok, announcers might not mention it on D/ F height, but on the super rare occasion that Krug, Perunovich and Walker are on the ice at the same time, I’m worried that they will get outskated by one of the super tall guys, since it takes two strides to beat them. I also pay attention to any short guys on the Blues because there’s a chance I can buy and use their barely used gear that is sold at the annual equipment sale.
@@heathclark318 it probably depends on the team, some of the Canadian teams probably auction the stuff off, but yeah, you can get pro stock sticks, barely used gear, random merch. Brzustewicz is a name that sounds Polish so for the Poles there is no letter missing. In Polish the first five letters of his name would be one syllable which you would read as "bzhoos" with a "zh" that's pronounced similarly as in names like Zherdev or Zholtok. Of course Brzustewicz wasn't born in Poland and doesnt live there so he probably chooses a different, more digestible pronunciation for North America.

I mean the Flames got some cap space to play with. Think you can find some players who can score. As long as they don’t get extorted by Allan Walsh again lol
People acted like Florida did him dirty back them, but it was him not budging from his ask that got him traded, Zito saw right through him and rightly said he is nowhere near Barkov. And then Treliving took the bait and signed him to the worst deal I've seen in ages. Even if he would produce right now, the fact that the contract is till 2031 is beyond silly. It's basically playing at -10% salary cap for the next 7 years.
Thanks brotha for making the video. I also agree that their play was good and effort was there before trading hanifin. I was at the kipper retirement game the flames won and were 30-25-5 and then lost two huge games right after that deflated the season in my opinion. We shall see how they rebound but huberdeau is definitely to blame as well
I think the Flames might’ve _been_ close to the playoffs at points this season, but after what they sold at the deadline, I’m very doubtful now Even if Conroy & company win the draft outright, the players already on the team would really need to step up their play next season to actually qualify for a series in a year’s time
their chances were out the window when they lost to Chicago before they started trading guys away, I knew they wouldn't make it even if they kept those guys. My hope is that Conroy has a good eye and can scoop a player or two from teams needing to shed contracts, similar to how Colorado picked up Toews from NYI for basically nothing.
I think that the Flames COULD make the play-offs next season, but don't feel that they SHOULD. Another season or two with Top 10 draft picks would probably help the team more in the long term. IMO, their goal should be to have a play-off competitive team by the time Calgary's new arena opens in 2027.
i’m split between trying to get huberdeau a first line goal scorer and try one more time but sadly i think it’s over and it’s full rebuild time. I hope he can get his confidence back because he was incredible on florida and i feel so bad for him that he has lost his game this much. but those contracts are just brutal and the flames might genuinely be terrible for the rest of my 20s.
You neglected to mention young Pospisil (24 yrs) that made a big impact with the team this season. And the younger d-men picked up via trade (Grushnikov, Miromanov) or waiver wire (Pachal). For a team that lost so many very good players, we weren't not too shabby. In the off season I expect a UFA or two will be picked up and a roster player traded for futures (Markstrom, Mangiapane). We will make the play-offs next year.
Disagree, Pospisil is pure violence and no skill. Zary is the player who proves to have a future. No expectation on this team till the new arena is open.
@@MagicMike_101 if you really believe that, you clearly didn't watch much Flames hockey this season. It's true that Pospy is an absolute menace, and we love him for it, but you are severely underrating his offensive abilities and instincts. Pro-rated over the course of a full season, he projected to hit double-digits in goals and 30+ points. Not bad for a rookie without the luxury of a supporting cast like Marchand had in his first full season, to have had similar totals. Spend the bulk of the season playing on a line with Naz and fellow rookie Zary. The fact that we have him for two more seasons at a milli per is absolute insanity. Without him, the Flames would be soft as shit right now. Can't wait to see him cause more havoc again next season.
Calgary should tear it down while they still have some valuable pieces, regardless of if they sneak into the playoffs next year they're nothing more than first round fodder. Markstrom could get a nice package, and Weegar could get a kings ransom.
If we are being honest we are 2-3 years away from being truly competitive. We need 2-3 solid drafts plus some quality free agents from winning again. Naz,kusmenco and weeger are really good but we're no where near competing any time soon
Calgary needs to trade Markstrom and bring in a veteran smaller goalie to mentor Wolf. Wolf will get more playing time , and he’ll learn from someone with the same skill set that smaller goalies possess. Marc Andre Fleury would have been perfect , but I think he announced retirement. And with the cap space they have , they need to target a couple of top 4 defencemen , so that Wolf isn’t hung out to dry every game and lose his confidence.
I expect Huberdeau to be better next year. He had a terrible start last year, but once 2024 started he was up close to a ppg, which would justify his contract in my opinion.
They better. If they don't take the chance to draft him and he turns out to be a stud like the Tkachuk bros are, it will be a bad look for the Flames. After the Matthew and Johnny exodus we need a star player who wants to be here. Tij was born with Flames DNA, we should do everything possible to get it done.
It's interesting to think about, Jarome works in their front office so you could cry nepotism or conflict of interest easily, but Tij is also arguably top 15 draft caliber, and some have said top 10. The fan base would also absolutely eat it up and love it.
@@vipeholmskolan6052 It's only $904,000 a year on the cap of dead money. Yes its for 14yrs but for less than a million a year and the way he's playing right now is awful and is probably only going to get worse, it's worth it. If they wait too long into his thirties, that cap hit goes way up and then it becomes practically buyout proof. Better to bite the bullet and get rid of it now while you can, than later on when you can't.
I believe you got the Flames draft pick to Montreal wrong, they could have claimed the pick if it were between 20-32, which it isn't. I think the most likely outcome is that Montreal receives Florida's 2025 1st round pick. here's how I understand it... 1. If Calgary's 1st round pick is between 20-32 Montreal 'can' claim the pick - not happening 2. If Calgary receives Florida's 2025 1st round pick (which Calgary doesn't receive this pick if it's a lottery pick). - If both Calgary's and Florida's picks are outside the top 10 Montreal gets the better of the two picks. - If Calgary's pick is in the top 10 and Florida's isn't, Montreal gets Florida's pick. *I believe this is the most likely outcome.* 3. If Calgary does not receive Florida's 2025 1st round pick and if Calgary's 2025 pick is not in the top 10 - Montreal gets this pick. - If that pick is worse than Florida's 2025 pick then Montreal also gets a Calgary's 2025 4th round pick. - the 2025 4th round pick Calgary sent to Florida becomes a 2026 4th 4. If Calgary does not receive Florida's 2025 pick and if Calgary's 2025 is in the top 10 - If it's 1st overall, Montreal receives the better of Calgary's or Florida's 2026 1st round picks and Montreal receives Calgary's 2025 3rd round pick. - If the pick is 2 - 10 Montreal gets that pick. (worse case for Flames fans?) Please correct me if I'm wrong as it's confusing af. TLDR: Flames fans want Florida to do well next year so we get their pick.
I think, they’re not so bad… they have a few younger players coming up and the core is okayish… Hub is a good player, not sure why it’s not working out… if he gets into it, they will be fine. Marks and Vladar needs to go (please god, no NJD) and bring cheaper option veteran to Wolf. And use the money to get something out of UFA market… I don’t think that total rebuilds will a good option for most of the teams since the competition for PO is extremely high and any kind of tear down means no PO for maybe a decade… 🤷🏻♂️
Not entirely true. If the Flames pick outside the top 10 next year, then Montreal gets the better pick between the 2. Which should be added motivation for the Flames to tank next year, and get another top 10 pick.
I think the Flames future is bright. They have a good group of rookies coming up. Add a top centre and dman from free agency and they could be in contention. As a point a game guy Hube is only overpaid by 2.5 million, not that significant. Weegar is a solid dman. We did ok in that trade. This batch of young guys just need seasoning, you cannot renew without growing pains. Kuzmenko needs to be used properly. And the post season next year is possible. I wouldn't mind them splitting the net 3 ways if Vladar gets 20, Wolf gets 20, and Marky takes the rest. Vladar could be a #1 someplace like Philly. (Maybe for OwenTippet). Markstrom is overplayed, he should play no more than 50 during the season. I doubt they could beat the Avalanche or Oilers next season in the playoffs but you never know. Maybe Makar comes home when he is a UFA. Cheers.
I think the flames are 2 or 3 players away from playoffs. Markstrom will need trading for a good RW Player and pick. The team will Need a #2 or #3 goalie added Maybe add Martin Jones. The Flames will need 2 forwards - replace Mangiapane - replace Coronato. Go Flames Go.
So the pick to Montreal next season is not unprotected. With some conditions already met, - Montreal will get the better of Calgary/Florida's picks NEXT season if they are both not top 10. - If CGY's is top 10 but not FLA's, Montreal will get Florida's pick. - If Florida's pick in 2025 is top 10, Florida keeps it and instead sends Calgary their 2026 1st. In this case, Montreal gets Calgary's 1st in 2025 unless it is 1st overall, in which case Montreal would get the (unprotected) better of CGY/FLA's 1st in 2026. The only way Montreal picks 1st overall with this pick is in 2026 if Florida's 2025 1st is top 10 AND Calgary's 2025 1st is 1st overall AND either of FLA/CGY's 2026 1sts are 1st overall
Get rid of the dead weight like Vladar and Mangiapane. Huberdeau is stuck there unfortunately but it’s not impossible to find someone who can get him engaged to play hard every game. The young guns will increase his play just give it time. Draft Tij support Marky get two more solid Defence and they will make playoffs.
Show a lot of things happening at once Remind everyone of what's going on (What's going on?) And with every shot, you show a little improvement To show it all would take too long That's called a montage (Montage) Oh, we want montage (Montage)
Calgary needs a player or two just to get back to where they started this season. That's not a high bar either, and look how much better the division is getting around them. Gotta wonder if they wouldn't be better off committing to the retool

Huberdeau has been awful for Calgary. If this isn't the worst contract in the league, in terms of production for dollars paid, it's right up there. He HAS to be better. 2031 is a long ways away.
Flames won't see playoffs till new arena.. we need to get rid of players and thrive for Gavin McKenna 2026.. It's finally time we get a 1st overall player!!
This is not a good team. If they keep it as is they’ll finish 5th in the division and miss the playoffs and continue this cycle of mediocrity. They need a tear down.
Can't wait for you to talk about the wings in this series. It was such a roller coaster season for them and then to miss the playoffs in literally the last minute of a game going on at the same time was just so indicative of the season. Nail biters every week.
Flame hold no leverage over Markstrom trade. Plus noone is taking that 6m unless they pay for a team to take that. Plz devils dont trade for Marky its not worth the huge overpay cuz we know fitzy will overpay.
The reason NJ didn't get Markstrom was Conroy's huge asking price, and I'm glad Conroy didn't budge on that one. Would have made him look like easy pickings to every other GM in the league. And I don't think 6M is too much for a top tier goalie considering Bobrovsky and Vasilevsky both get around 10M.
A player or two from a 1st round exit maybe, they need more than a few players

Calgary flames should definitely win the draft lottery this year and draft Connor Macklin
I also pay attention to any short guys on the Blues because there’s a chance I can buy and use their barely used gear that is sold at the annual equipment sale.
gotta get a deal right! Didnt know teams sold their gear end of year
@@heathclark318 it probably depends on the team, some of the Canadian teams probably auction the stuff off, but yeah, you can get pro stock sticks, barely used gear, random merch. I still wear a pair of Jackman’s skates that were in great shape for $100. And then every so often I’ll think they found an old box in a closet and they sell a batch of 5+ year old shirts or 20 year old practice jerseys.
The funniest was after the cup run in 2019. All the stuff that saner people would throw in the dumpster, they sold. All the cardboard or styrofoam signs to direct the media where to go every name banner from the parade, a bunch of street banners… I have to use a whole lot of self control when I go to that sale
@@heathclark318it is a joke... He is saying that smaller players will not get used on certain teams so he is going to get ahead and try to get a good deal on their used gear at the end of the season (they have to make money somewhere right? )
Flames will need to get better & hope division rivals like the Kings & Canucks regress to have a chance next season.
Same story with Matt Grzelcyk. Should be gzhelsik, but they just go with grizlik because it's much easier.
And?
@@MagicMike_101 There was discussion of the pronunciation of a polish name in the video. As a pole, he is giving the context on how he'd pronounce it. Don't be a tool.
I dont think thats how the mtl pick works. Not that I blame you tho, I still cant figure it out completly and Ive been trying for 2 years
Some of these picks that get traded are so confusing.
He is wrong on the MTL pick. It is TOP 20 protected this year, and TOP 10 protected next year. So the flames can not lose the 2024 pick. and if they play bad and its a top 10 next year, than MTL gets florida's 2025 pick next year, unless florida tanks somehow too and its a top 10 pick, than MTL will get flames 2026 1st rounder unprotected. That should clear the confusion up enough.
If the pick doesn’t drop to 11 this year, next year they get floridas pick
@@jerryjay-vv6wu So its pretty much 99,9% sure the habs are getting Florida's 1st next year which will probably end up being between 17 (Assuming they are a playoff team) and 32 right?
I'd rather see them bottom out for a couple years and get top 5 picks. But Im sure they won't tear it down that way due to ownership.
Am old enough to remember very good flames teams pushing the Oilers to greatness. Cup was contested right here in Alberta 8 yrs in a row for those who don"t know.
I mean the Flames got some cap space to play with. Think you can find some players who can score. As long as they don’t get extorted by Allan Walsh again lol
If they dont blow it up now, they wont see playoffs for the next 10 years easily
Huberdeau contract is gonna hurt this team for a long time
He will give up at any point. No possible to stay on this pace.
I wish there was a guy with your hockey Smartness That would evaluate my local Junior A team. And all their competition
In regards to height comments, MN collects short players and we hear about it often. We feel the pain of the short kings.
I don't think so. They need to hit on this, and the next, drafts to do a proper rebuild/retool or what have you.
It is absolutely crucial they get another top 4 defender this offseason. You don’t want to leave wolf out to dry in a poor defensive environment.
Thanks brotha for making the video. I also agree that their play was good and effort was there before trading hanifin. I was at the kipper retirement game the flames won and were 30-25-5 and then lost two huge games right after that deflated the season in my opinion. We shall see how they rebound but huberdeau is definitely to blame as well
Pospisil seems like a promising power forward type.
I think the Flames might’ve _been_ close to the playoffs at points this season, but after what they sold at the deadline, I’m very doubtful now
Even if Conroy & company win the draft outright, the players already on the team would really need to step up their play next season to actually qualify for a series in a year’s time
their chances were out the window when they lost to Chicago before they started trading guys away, I knew they wouldn't make it even if they kept those guys. My hope is that Conroy has a good eye and can scoop a player or two from teams needing to shed contracts, similar to how Colorado picked up Toews from NYI for basically nothing.
The feel good story is easy. We need our first round draft pick this year, and with it we will draft Iginla.
He won’t likely be available at pick #9
@@kellismith4329 Yeah, it sounds like he's jumped up quite a bit.
I think that the Flames COULD make the play-offs next season, but don't feel that they SHOULD. Another season or two with Top 10 draft picks would probably help the team more in the long term. IMO, their goal should be to have a play-off competitive team by the time Calgary's new arena opens in 2027.
That is all the idea here.
i’m split between trying to get huberdeau a first line goal scorer and try one more time but sadly i think it’s over and it’s full rebuild time.
We will make the play-offs next year.
we'll see
yeah I dont see playoffs next season and with teams in the west coming up, this is going to be a crucial next 2-3 years
Disagree, Pospisil is pure violence and no skill.
@@jasonkh4 "we?" You only talk about yourself. Just respect others' opinions.
Calgary should tear it down while they still have some valuable pieces, regardless of if they sneak into the playoffs next year they're nothing more than first round fodder. Markstrom could get a nice package, and Weegar could get a kings ransom.
Why would you trade Weegar? That’s their problem they peddle away all their decent D
Huberdeau has made Calgary 2 good 5 million dollars short!!!!
Markstrom to NJ
I must've missed who is almost assured the third pick i feel like almost every team has a >1% chance to pick 3rd.
Didn’t new jersey do that this year, where they traded both their goalies for new goalies?
How about Wolf going to Leaf's to Samsonov's place? I'd be cool sounding tandem, Woll and Wolf
dream on
I expect Huberdeau to be better next year. He had a terrible start last year, but once 2024 started he was up close to a ppg, which would justify his contract in my opinion.
If Calgary has the chance to pick Tij Iginla in the 9th or 10th, do they do it?
They better. If they don't take the chance to draft him and he turns out to be a stud like the Tkachuk bros are, it will be a bad look for the Flames. After the Matthew and Johnny exodus we need a star player who wants to be here. Tij was born with Flames DNA, we should do everything possible to get it done.
It's interesting to think about, Jarome works in their front office so you could cry nepotism or conflict of interest easily, but Tij is also arguably top 15 draft caliber, and some have said top 10. The fan base would also absolutely eat it up and love it.
Calgary should focus on trying to get Huberdeau back on track. If they don't succeed there they might as well tear it all down.
Buffalo and Jeff Skinner figured things out. Hopefully it’s a similar situation for Hubby
Huberdeau really needs some finishers to play with. He will pass on a breakaway
Huberdeau buyout this upcoming season
@@bradbradbury8561 So dead cap until like 2036 or something like that? Not a viable option.
1. If Calgary's 1st round pick is between 20-32 Montreal 'can' claim the pick
- not happening
*I believe this is the most likely outcome.*
3. If Calgary does not receive Florida's 2025 1st round pick and if Calgary's 2025 pick is not in the top 10
- Montreal gets this pick.
- If that pick is worse than Florida's 2025 pick then Montreal also gets a Calgary's 2025 4th round pick.
- the 2025 4th round pick Calgary sent to Florida becomes a 2026 4th
4. If Calgary does not receive Florida's 2025 pick and if Calgary's 2025 is in the top 10
- If it's 1st overall, Montreal receives the better of Calgary's or Florida's 2026 1st round picks and Montreal receives Calgary's 2025 3rd round pick.
- If the pick is 2 - 10 Montreal gets that pick. (worse case for Flames fans?)
Please correct me if I'm wrong as it's confusing af.
And use the money to get something out of UFA market…
I don’t think that total rebuilds will a good option for most of the teams since the competition for PO is extremely high and any kind of tear down means no PO for maybe a decade… 🤷🏻♂️
flames need to stop being mediocre year after year
Trade Markstrom, get the Flower somehow.
He can retire a Flame and mentor Wolf.
Calgary is where the Wild were *before* they bought out Suter and Parise’s deals. Except the Wild were a Playoff team w/ those two.
Where are they now that they bought out the big contracts?
In the future i want iginlas son would be fire !!!!
I dont think klapka is going to be a goal scorer but i think he'll be a good physical player for the flames
You got the Montreal pick wrong, all signs show that they’re probably going to get Floridas pick in 2025
Not entirely true. If the Flames pick outside the top 10 next year, then Montreal gets the better pick between the 2. Which should be added motivation for the Flames to tank next year, and get another top 10 pick.
@@ominousflames14 yeah that was my point, flames are definitely getting a top ten pick next year
@@korbine we can only hope. But the flames have a tendency to screw themselves over.
New Jersey during the season two new goalies
So the pick to Montreal next season is not unprotected. With some conditions already met,
- Montreal will get the better of Calgary/Florida's picks NEXT season if they are both not top 10.
The only way Montreal picks 1st overall with this pick is in 2026 if Florida's 2025 1st is top 10 AND Calgary's 2025 1st is 1st overall AND either of FLA/CGY's 2026 1sts are 1st overall
if they make the first round, its an easy first round exit
Get rid of the dead weight like Vladar and Mangiapane. Huberdeau is stuck there unfortunately but it’s not impossible to find someone who can get him engaged to play hard every game. The young guns will increase his play just give it time. Draft Tij support Marky get two more solid Defence and they will make playoffs.
Yes, they are a player or 2 that are terrible where if they could get rid of them they would be fine.

If the Flames finish in the bottom 10 next year, Montreal will get Florida's 2025 first rounder so not as bad
Calgary needs a player or two just to get back to where they started this season. That's not a high bar either, and look how much better the division is getting around them.
Gotta wonder if they wouldn't be better off committing to the retool
I hope Schwindt does well because my last name is Schwind!
I hope other players do well, because they are human as we are.

I think Conroy won't want to make the playoffs next season because the next draft will be stronger than this year, and he knows it...
Kadri needs 90 points
So Hubby needs 120 XD

Flames won't see playoffs till new arena.. we need to get rid of players and thrive for Gavin McKenna 2026.. It's finally time we get a 1st overall player!!
4:51: Top 3 scorers. No Jonathan You Know Who??? He didn't even have 54 points? Is that the worst contract in the last how many years in the NHL?????
No... Actually, it isn't.
Still, Calgary is a tough place to (want) play at 🐉🦕♑
Hockey is dead to me until next season
This is not a good team. If they keep it as is they’ll finish 5th in the division and miss the playoffs and continue this cycle of mediocrity. They need a tear down.
As is the murry edwards way
Short answer… no 🤣
Huberdeau for Gaudrey trade??
Can't wait for you to talk about the wings in this series. It was such a roller coaster season for them and then to miss the playoffs in literally the last minute of a game going on at the same time was just so indicative of the season. Nail biters every week.
I think with all the quality players who left this season the Flames are going to fizzle and burnout next season
You’d be surprised. There’s lots of team’s desperate for even remotely decent goaltending plus Markstrom is absolutely worth the 6 million
Look at Georgiev and Samsonov these playoffs and you’ll see why a team will trade a lot of assets to acquire a solid goalie
I will have a chance to see these hot shots from Calgary next week in the Coachella Valley! Go Firebirds!
Go away. Nothing related with your topic.
I'm not a Flames fan, but from the outside they look dangerously close to be in the no mans land.
1 or 2 players, such as Gaudreau and Tkachuk. xD
Hmm... a player or 10, more like it.
They need to tear it down. There are no other options. Conroy keeps saying retool, but this team lacks young, high-end talent.
