AZ resident here. This was almost doomed from the start: too many Tempe residents watched what Glendale residents went through because Glendale's city council bought the stinking garbage the NHL sold them. Glendale taxpayers will be paying for the Coyotes mess for the next 30 years because of the bonds they floated throughout the years to prop up the Yotes. I am surprised the No vote wasn't bigger. Also surprised only a third of voters voted. How hard is it to check 3 boxes, seal your ballot in the envelope, sign the envelope, and drop it in the mail? You don't even need a stamp.
Honestly, that makes sense. With such an example nearby, possible for many to just say "no, we're not getting into this." And part of me thinks the turnout was pretty decent. People love having the right to vote and that democratic freedom. But a lot don't actually care about going out of their way to actually do the voting part.
As one Glendale resident asked his city council at one of the meetings about the Coyotes' financial troubles about a decade ago: "What's it gonna take you people to realize this has been a losing proposition from day one?". I'm sure a number of residents of Tempe watched and remembered that meeting...and there were LOTS of them!
Good points. Tempe's economy is booming, so we don't need the Coyotes. I live near the proposed arena and the location is really bad. Thousands of cars would have cut through the neighborhoods for easier access every time it was used. Also, the jerk factor of billionaires did not help. Are any likable? Go three miles east and there are thousands of acres of open land on the reservation. Put it there. The Suns don't own the downtown arena, the city does. Tell the Suns they will have company.
Thank you, Shannon, for your thoughts on this very difficult situation for the Coyotes. I always enjoy watching your videos, and learn from them too. No shtick, yelling, arm-waving, face-making or annoying intros like some other RUclipsrs. Just a real guy, with an amazing collection of jerseys & hats and real hockey knowledge. The Best!
Feel awful for Coyotes fans. They have been through so much crap supporting a team that has been so badly run for decades. Their fans don’t deserve to see it end like this
I’m no Coyotes fan but I like their jerseys. And it looks like pretty soon the Coyotes will be history as people chose a empty landfill than a new arena
@@JonathanGaeta with Hartford and now the Yotes Kachina gone, we are losing our coolest logos! At least the Ducks are going back to the Mighty Ducks look
As a Panthers fan you need good owners. The NHL needs to make sure teams have proper ownership. The Panthers had an ownership group in the very hard times that included a used car dealership chain owner and my friends wife actually worked for someone in the ownership group. We used to get in an ownership box for games. This guy ran like a small office with 10 employees and he was in the ownership group for the Panthers. Honestly look at things since they got their billionaire owner.
I have no idea if she was telling the truth, but my friends Mom said she worked for the Panthers' owner back in the day. And was telling me some story that he was pissed during the year of the rat original Playoff run because he was using the team as a tax write off.
The NHL had no vetting process for potential Coyotes owners. It's just whatever random hack with money steps forward, they own the team for a couple years and bail. This ENTIRE fiasco is on Bettman and the NHL.
Literally so upset. The Arizona coyotes has been apart of my childhood. It’s been my whole life. I’m so sad. Literally 5 shots deep and don’t even care
I used to be in the move them out of Arizona boat as well, but, for some reason or another, I’ve started having a lot more sympathy for fans of horribly mismanaged teams. - an oakland a’s fan
I'm a hockey and baseball fan in Canada and I wore an A's jersey when I played for one of the slo-pitch teams that I did over thirty years ago. I enjoy kicking back late at night and watching a West coast game involving the Dodgers, Angels or A's. The sad fact is Oakland obviously doesn't have the money to invest in facilities for pro sports teams.

@@idiotcow3721 I've never been to Arizona, so always wondered about the difficulty of getting to this Glendale arena, but these geniuses will continue to build palatial new arenas that no one wants to go to. That's why the Cleveland Barons failed back in the 70's. The arena was something like 40 miles out of town (plus the team was awful). And I've heard the same things about the arena in Florida & Ottawa.
Not to be mean to the fans but Winnepeg should have never moved there in the first place. I remember as a kid thinking how dumb of a move that was. Not enough people like hockey there. I feel so bad for the players and staff and the coyotes fanbase. Just a giant mess that’s resulting in heartbreak for so many fans. I will always love the coyotes, it’s too bad that not enough people locally felt the same.
As a former 3rd row season ticket holder the team management did not care about the fan base. I was told a few years ago that they didn't care about me and my tickets because they wanted to move. They have spent years taking on dead contracts to hit the cap floor. Just leave already and give us a minor league team which would be more interesting that this one.
I feel bad for the fans and the youth programs in Phoenix, the same ones who developed Matthews, Knies, and countless other players. They are going to suffer.
Fs in the chat for Arizona hockey. Damn. I've been a Coyotes fan since they came into the league. They're the ultimate underDOG, as THG said, and I've always pulled for them. Kinda bummed about how this turned out.
The strangest part of this is that the Meruelo group just let the Phoenix special interests lie to everyone for months, and they did nothing about it. I guess they thought there was no way the vote could fail. Sad time for Coyotes fans.
I think they wanted it to fail. Starting fresh in a new market is likely the best return on investment for ownership. This was about saving face with Bettman and leaving no stone unturned. Fortunately for the league a market like Houston is available and that will keep espn happy.
@@rosskgilmour That's the only thing that makes sense here. Be interesting to see if we find out in a few years that the Phoenix special interest groups were funded by anonymous donors.
They only bought the Yotes in the first place so they could have a sportsbook license, as long as they can run a sports book they dont have to care about the team.
Being a little kid growing up with the supersonics and seeing them leave in my early teens, I feel for coyotes fans. I don't think it's over yet though. The coyotes have gone through a lot and are still here. I think there's still a few more options.
@@NHLMasterLikeAndSUBSCRIBE I'm kinda a weird case. Most people around here either dropped hockey or picked up Nashville or Carolina. I kinda rooted for the Rangers initially because that was my mom's team. Now I'm more a Stars fan, but that's because I moved to Fort Worth in 2016 but recently moved back to Atlanta.
As an AZ native and current resident, it’s heartbreaking. I voted yes on all 3. HOPEFULLY, the owners can make an agreement with Matt Ishbia and the Phoenix Suns to go back to sharing the arena. It’s in a perfect area. Fingers crossed.
Isbia has already expressed having no interest in sharing the Footprint Center. And that arena was never built for hockey. When Coyotes played there during their first 7 seasons, the sightlines were terrible, and there were a lot of obstructed view seats , and part of the upper-deck actually hung over the glass.
The current owner would probably do everything in his power to keep the Yotes otherwise he loses the sportsbook license that he was able to get through owning a sports team.
i voted no, a lot of people genuinely did not want this. Could they have courted literally any other city in Arizona that *needs* jobs and development?
Gary BettMGMman let the Yotes be bought by a man that 100% doesnt care about the team and only wanted the franchise so he could be eligable to get one of the few sportsbook licenses available in AZ. Team went from moving from Winnipeg, to then having more garbage owners to Bettman not giving up when he should have and now we're here.
As a Vancouver Grizzlies fan from Vancouver, the pain of your franchise leaving is hard to get over. All these years later im still bitter about it and want my team back but i know it will never happen because of how expensive it is.
And they were setup to fail through the initial expansion rule set. Shame that leagues learned these lessons after the fact but at least future teams won’t suffer the same fate
@@AC-be5gu Yep. NBA made it harder for the Raptors and Grizzlies to succeed. Brilliant strategy 🤦♂. Both teams couldn't win the first overall picks in 1996, 1997, and 1998. All because the other owners were salty that the Orlando Magic got 2 number 1 picks in a row and drafted Shaq and Penny Hardaway. As a Raptors fan I miss the Vancouver Grizzlies. Naismith Cup was always a fun game in the preseason.
My favourite NL team was the Montreal Expos. Seeing them leave was heartbreaking but expected. The players strike destroyed that franchise. There was basically no chances of keeping the team in Montreal. Phoenix has been handled with kids gloves for far too long.
I still don't understand the downside to this, basically all private funding, getting rid of a landfill, and getting a new downtown district, you're not gonna get any better deal than that
That's why Tempe City Council voted unanimously for the project to go through. It was an absolutely fantastic deal for the city and I have no idea why you wouldn't vote for it.
There seemed to be a mix of perspectives on the No side. * Local small businesses worried that if it got built, it would just mean people spend less money at their businesses. They felt that bringing the team to Tempe wouldn't increase any spending in the area, it would just shift who got the money people were spending, and if the Coyotes and the businesses in the proposed area were to get a big tax break, it'd mean less spending in local small business and subsequently less tax revenue generated for a city already struggling with its budgets. I'm not sure I buy the conclusions they came to, given that there's not a lot of other entertainment to be found within Tempe itself, so IMO they'd likely see entertainment money stay in/come to Tempe instead of being spent in Phoenix. But I can see the merit in opposing something that could reduce tax revenue and small business survivability at a time when the city is struggling financially and small businesses are as well. They'd likely prefer the landfill stay a landfill. * NIMBYs who just didn't want an "eyesore" or any risk of increased traffic, or who thought the city would have to pay an arm and a leg for it. This is the same city where a retirement home got built across from a long-standing club/venue, and proceeded to sue the venue into oblivion and force them to shut down over irrational and unfounded noise complaints (they knew they were moving in across from a loud place of business, they shouldn't have any grounds to sue because they built and gained residence with the understanding and expectation of those existing noise levels). Something like 60+% of Tempe residents over 55 showed up to vote, that's not going to bode well when ~33% of Tempe residents voted altogether. They'd likely prefer the landfill stay a landfill. * People who thought some wealthy benefactor or future mayor/council would decide to clean up the landfill and make it into affordable housing and parks. There's no indication that this is feasible, but it did seem to be something people were saying they would prefer (realistic or not), and building an arena and entertainment district would kill that potential. I mean, maybe they know something we don't and someone is willing and capable of doing that, and if so, I'd understand that. * Local unionworkers were concerned they wouldn't get the work, and that Meruelo would just bring in his own people from elsewhere, meaning the construction jobs this proposal pushed wouldn't be jobs for locals. Meruelo wouldn't promise to use local union labour, so it's very likely the work wouldn't stay local and help the local economy. Justifiable enough reason to vote against it. * Some folks in Phoenix, like the airport, seemed to complain for the sake of complaining, perhaps due to lobbyists.
The location is bad with poor access (thousands of visitors no doubt would have cut through my neighborhood for each game) and it is on probably the most valuable non-used land in the entire state. Business in Tempe is booming (there are construction cranes everywhere) and we don't need them.
Kings fan here, really sorry for you yotes fan, yall have really put up with a lot of bs. Let's hope for the best. Also hands down one of the coolest logos in sports, period
and thanks Shannon for your "support" and your rooting for the Coyotes - one of the very few Canadians not constantly sh"tting on the team and this franchise
He is "rooting" for a billionaire and a small group of execs to make massive profits at the expense of the communities that will have to pay millions in tax breaks
Agreed. A good team in AZ with a stable ownership and arena situation would undoubtedly be good for hockey particularly in our region. It's just like Shannon said in the video, this looks like a Thrashers situation :(
As a canes fan who always had a soft spot for the yotes, I’m devastated. It wasn’t long ago that everyone was calling for the canes to move, that they didn’t have enough fans, etc. There was always enough fans, the team just hadn’t done enough to bring them in and keep them around. It stings seeing another team in a similar situation fall on the other side of the fence, man this just sucks

I feel horrible for the current long-time Yotes of the team like Keller, Crouse, and Fischer. They've been through so much with this team in the past 7-8 years and they've said before that they care about the team a lot, and it just sucks seeing it all getting ripped apart time and time again in front of them. All three of them expressed their love for being a part of the team and being in AZ and it just sucks so bad. I'm not even from the area, but I quickly got attached to them as a second team because of their hard work ethic and the whole "underdog" mentality. It hurts to see this happen, and I just feel even worse for the fans in the state of Arizona.
A bunch of fucking horrible misinformation apparently screwed this whole thing over, claiming it was "predatory" and was "gonna cost taxpayers a fortune" (even though this new arena wasn't gonna cost taxpayers a dime). I'm beyond pissed off that people in Tempe are that heartless, that careless to not let the Coyotes make their new home there. I've never felt more betrayed by my fellow citizens in AZ than I do now. I hope that city goes bankrupt or something, and that the landfill that's currently where the arena was supposed to be stinks up the whole city.
The team will still exist just in a different place. They will probably like playing in an NHL sized arena at home in front of people who want them there.
Their prospects are great and they still have a ton of picks over the next couple of years. They'll be good wherever and whomever they are. Still sucks though.
@Brian Misera I'm a Panthers fan from Scotland. Been watching them since Olli Jokinen was captain. It isn't unusual for European hockey fans to support their local team and then have an NHL team too.
Could you make a video for coping with a team move like this? I've been torn in loyalty if a move occurred. Not sure if I would follow the team to where they move, jump on another team that's close (like Colorado, Vegas, etc), or just ditch teams altogether and just cheer on different players. Would be interested in your opinion on that. Regardless, thank you Shannon for your coverage of the team and for your stance with coyotes fans. I appreciate how you cover the yotes and for making videos like this.
My first game was at Phoenix in 96... Was at the game ovi scored the over-the-head goal... Part of the fun of being a yotes fan was, "say whatever you want, you can't phase me. I'm a coyotes fan and already dead inside!" Lol. I'll still love the game... It will be very weird going forward though. Like, what will I do with my collection wall? Right after the vote, the Tempe mayor said "that land's gonna stay empty until the day I die". This was the only proposal for the land in recent memory. Tempe voters had no idea what they were voting on, and how great of a deal it was compared to what they thought it was.
There's no rent control policy in Tempe and more than half of the people that live there pay rent. What do you think is going to happen to property values when an entire entertainment district is added?
@@davin1287 Sure, but you can say that about any development in Tempe. The place is already being gentrified to hell and back, rents are going to continue rising whether or not the TED got built. There's no reason to believe this proposal would have made rent across the board skyrocket
As a long time Coyotes season ticket holder, I honestly can say that I am not surprised by the results of this initiative. There is run-away development all over this area and I'm sure that many long term residents do not want to deal with more traffic and congestion. In addition, the ownership issues over the years and the team's lack of success have contributed to the current situation. I hope that there is alternative plan in the works so we will see what develops.
Daniel, you get a hat trick for that reply. I live in the neighborhood thousands of cars would have cut through to get to the new arena and we all voted no.
They couldn't fill 4600 damn seats and made every excuse as to why they weren't going, and were openly hostile towards anyone and everyone online. Tempe doesn't deserve anything.
Every team has its loyal fans, but the thousands of empty seats and the multi-millions of dollars lost kinda shatter your claim that they deserve the team.
I was seriously ready to burn my jerseys after every team in the final 4 was a sunbelt team. I literally took down my collection and just threw them in a corner. I literally was willing to root for 10 of the 16 playoff teams. These plus Tampa and LA were the only ones I wouldn't root for. Between this and Bedard not going to a sunbelt team I've never felt more relieved.
Ive always liked the Coyotes. Liked their many colors and logos. Watched a few of their games this year and they looked like a fun squad. I Hope for the best and that Arizona will stay in AZ.
The No side also had the backing of labor unions, because the yotes did not commit to union labor building the arena. Tbh bad foresight by the yotes. This is something that happens in most other developments of this magnitude.
Contrast this with the Seattle Kraken, whose owners negotiated a fair deal with local construction unions to build Climate Pledge Arena. Mutual cooperation can go a long way towards getting things done.
From what I’ve heard the Coyotes did have labor unions involve in the project not sure if it was for the arena or for the other areas to be build within the entertainment district but they were going to use them

Arizona sports fans are so different, even down to the high school level. I'm a former sports writer for the Eastern Arizona Courier. As soon as "your team" starts performing poorly, the fans get nasty and disappear. It's so bizarre to me. Real fans show support for better or worse. Suns fans disappear when the team stumbles and they've never won a championship. D-Backs fans come and go to a team that has one World Series championship under its belt. The Cards... I don't wan to touch them with a ten-foot pole until there's new management from the top down. On top of that, they've never won a Superbowl. And the Yotes? No Stanley Cup for them. It was just that the team was never so good that it had super strong support. But they did get support when they were in the playoffs, and teams don't stay bad forever. There's nothing unique about Arizonans that would have kept them from supporting the team when the Coyotes were good again.

I know there's no chance in hell of Quebec getting a team, but I just want to point out: _today's the 28th anniversary of the Nordiques last game ever._ So May 16th is the day that franchises die.
There is a chance. The league often says things like that, yet, behind closed doors keeps communication open. It's obviously not their priority and a last resort option, but right now the situation is that they do have everything in place. If Houston is all-in, it'll be there, but if not, Quebec City is always an option--even if it's not their desirable spot. Right now, it's as close to the end of the line--if not the end, for the Coyotes in Arizona.
@@stevenanthonyguardinoherna3255 Kind of similar to what happened with Atlanta. The Thrasher situation dissolved pretty quickly, and it was Winnipeg that was ready right then and there to take the team, with ownership and an arena. And Winnipeg wasn't a preferred option, as if you recall, the Jets had to stay in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference for their first two seasons before the realignment happened.
It'll be QC, this is basically the thrashers all over again. Unless you can explain to me why the owner of the only houston arena would bid more than 1$ for the team. Why would the Houston guy spend a billion dollars so he can split his area's ticket buyers between nhl and nba. It's great to fantasize about raw population numbers, but the arena owner ain't stupid. Houston is a massive blob traffic getting to the arena is gonna limit the number of people who'll make it to the games. there's no point in trying to trick the owner of the team.
Remember how quickly the league moved the Thrashers? I think it’s going to be that quick this time too. I wouldn’t be surprised if the team announces sale and/or relocation within the next two weeks.
Maybe quicker. 7 to 10 days. This reminds me so much of Atlanta to Winnipeg because the team was in a rebuild and took 8 years to really build it. No real assets to trade. No core. All bare bones same here. This will be an 8 year plan regardless... however wherever they go it will be more favorable to attract free agents. Salt Lake or Portland or Houston or kc. These are favorable free agency cities. Ppl wanna go there. Ppl didn't want to play with phx. Free agency was hard for them. Same as wpg
Probably already have a backup deal in place in case this happened. Unless Bettman was oblivious and didn’t want to believe that it very well could… which it did.
Well, if the team had been run properly and had some success on the ice, then people probably would have voted differently. Plus the yes side didn't do a good job of gettitn the message out.
@Darth Vader A lot of people (myself included) didn't really think a huge campaign push was necessary, since the opposition's campaign was pretty much entirety misinformation. But it succeeded in brainwashing enough Tempe voters that were on the fence or not really following the proposition.
Coyotes finally looked like they were on a positive trajectory and then this. I don't think I've felt worse for a fan base in a long time. Even St Louis losing the Rams didn't hit this hard to me.
team didnt really do shit to drive a yes vote. I own a home 5 minutes north of ASU in Tempe - I got 1 flyer in the mail, and the last 2 weeks a few Vote Yes banners started showing up on 2 streets by me. The no campaign? Calls. Texts. Multiple flyers. Multiple door to doors... Phoenix mobilized their resources against this hard and it worked.
@@comicbookcountdown9252 Which is ridiculous considering the Phoenix special interests groups entire argument was based on a blatant lie. This is by far and away the best arena deal a team has gotten in the NHL, probably ranks toward the top in all major NA sports. Zero taxpayer investment, city money was already collected and committed a project that was already greenlit. It's actually insane this didn't pass.
the worst thing that could happen now is that they move the team because of this vote and when the move is done because of what the coyotes have been doing with rebuilding and getting more picks, they actually have an good, competetive team that could challenge for the playoffs, im thinking like an repeat of the avalance. They moved from Quebec to Colorado and bam first year they win the cup, because the team wasn't bad it was other things that force the team to be moved and im sure that crushed some fans to see the team they had get moved and it instantly get sucess. I would hate to see that happen to the coyotes
Seriously as a winnipeg fan, it's crazy how bad it is not to have an nhl team. Those old icy winters in Arizona are gonna make a lack of hockey brutal.
They couldn’t get enough yes votes to sell out a single game what fans? Half of those probably just wanted the rest of the development. Also the league will be better off without this parasite.
I’ve never seen Shannon actually sound defeated about the Coyotes being able to work in AZ but seeing him talk about it here makes me feel like this is really it this time. Which is a shame for AZ fans. That said I do feel like this was a long time coming and it was always an uphill battle to make this team work. I felt the same about Florida but hopefully this playoff run is making it easier for them to build permanent support.
Panthers are looking great now. Biggest issue is finding ownership that has the pockets and actually cares about the team instead of just the money. Coyotes have never had trustworthy ownership and it shows. Just awful that the minute they find an owner who has those qualities and start building a team from scratch who wants to stay in Arizona fail just when they found their feet. Really sorry to all you Yotes fans. The fact that you stuck by this team all this time shows that it really could have worked there, if only the NHL hadn't been lazy about ensuring the owners throughout the years cared about building a successful team.
I'm just stunned by this honestly. Really thought this would've been a slam dunk based on earlier videos you've done on this. As a Blues fan, I've kinda lowkey rooted for this team on the same idea of the "ultimate underdog". Just wanna see them at least be competitive. But what a shame this is. I mean, part of me is excited by the idea they could move, as I think it could breathe fresh life into the franchise, but I'm also just really stunned by it. Wherever this team goes, be it Houston or Kansas City or Salt Lake City or Atlanta (lol) or Milwaukee (personally just think that'd be really cool but no clue if that'd work), I hope they can find the support they truly need.
I did a West Coast swing with the Hurricanes through Phoenix (and then LA and Anaheim) 22 years ago when they were still in America West (which was not built for hockey at all with a mezzanine that extended over the goalie's head on one end!). Far and away the friendliest and most welcoming lot amongst the fans were in Phoenix and the team really put on a heck of a show in the arena. They had the funky coyote logo in one corner of the building that had lights that were synced with a driving native drum beat during key points in the game and there was an intimacy in that place where you really felt on top of and part of the action. And then there were the howls when the Coyotes put one past Arturs Irbe (who would be one really pissed off little Latvian at the next stop at Staples Centre when his franchise-record consecutive starts would come to an end)...chilling but also a unique way of cheering a goal. It's truly a darned shame that a bunch of numpty NIMBYs with a strategic view that doesn't go past their nose might well have finally forced the Coyotes to move. Much as I loved the one year my father was stationed at Ft Leavenworth just NW of Kansas City which is a truly delightful city, the long-suffering Coyotes fans deserve far better than this. :(
This is the worst feeling I’ve ever felt as a fan. This is worse than when the cardinals lost the super bowl. This actually feels like I have a terminally sick friend or family member. I think the new building would’ve worked, there are a lot of hockey fans on the East valley and we’re still one of the largest growing markets in the country. I won’t be supporting the team if they move. I’ll be picking a new team but I know it won’t be the same. There is an Indian reservation with a big casino down the road that has been considered to be the spot of a new arena/stadium for the coyotes/dbacks/suns. I think if the same plan was there, it would be no different but honestly I don’t believe there is a backup plan. I wouldn’t wish the threat of relocation on any fanbase.
I don't care how diehard of a fan you arre, you DON'T compare an entertainment/sports leisure time experience to a close friend or family member who has a terminal illness. What a deplorable statement. Precious human life close to you in peril, equating to a sports team being moved?? Give your head a shake.
Wah wah wahhhh. You literally stole a grassroots WHA team from the smallest market in the NHL. As a jets fan I’ll be cheering when the Aeros or Nordiques unis are released
@@yothythoty729 I'll never cheer for any team in Houston. I will not be watching the rest of the playoffs because there's nothing but sun belt teams left. Assuming Houston gets this team, I hope they bring back the color scheme of the WHA team they had.
@@yothythoty729 I feel sorry for Winnipeg but you got a team back, I also wasn’t even alive during the relocation. We’re at 32 teams, this will be it for a long long time. So losing the coyotes is not the same as losing the jets.
@@countrystud1986 alright, I was overreacting last night because I was feeling a lot of emotions, but I still don’t take back what I said. It’s obviously not worse than losing a family member or friend, but I have lost people before and losing this team is more comparable to that than anything else I’ve lost. Maybe this more like losing a dog. You also have to realize I didn’t just spend hours watching this team, I personally know a lot of people in the organization, I was apart of the youth program. I would’ve never played at the level I did if it weren’t for this team. I had goals of one day working for this organization. I’m a lot more than a diehard fan, so don’t criticize me when you don’t know who I am or how well I’m connected to this team. This isn’t just “entertainment/sports leisure” for me, this is something far greater than that.
I appreciate your perspective and seeing all this through different lenses. I'm too young to have resentment over the North Stars, but in the Wild/Minnesota hockey community, 'F Norm Green' is still a common phrase, so it obviously leaves a lasting mark even for cities that get their team back/a new team. Best wishes for the Coyotes fans.
In my opinion the people have spoken and said no we don't want a team, we don't care about hockey. And how many arenas do they need in one area anyway? Don't they already have 2 or 3 arenas? Why would taxpayers want to spend money on more?
Seattle got royally screwed by David Stern, who kissed New Orleans' ass after Katrina, then took bribes from Kevin Johnson to keep the Kings in Suckramento.
Scottsdale said no a long time ago to subsidizing a stadium, Tempe taxpayers also said no. I don't blame them at all. Why should taxpayers pay for a private enterprise? At the same time, I am sorry Coyotes have never been in a proper home here in AZ. I love hockey but also do not like using public money to help fund a private business. Cost of living is already so difficult for many people.
@@clarkesuperman Exactly. It is much easier to position public funding for entertainment districts in cities that don't have a ton of other draws. The Flames and Oilers are literally the only major sports teams they have. They don't really have a reason not to invest in infrastructure to support them, especially when they also benefit the city.
Lengthy post here. 1. I'm not local to AZ but I've been a full Yotes season ticket holder since 2015. I've renewed for next season. 2. Seravelli has been out to get the Yotes. I don't trust his journalism at all anymore after this. 3. Meruelo has been the best ownership group since the club moved to AZ. However, Meruelo is not visibly involved in the community and he's made significant public missteps while in Glendale. I think that factored into play. 4. The citizens of Tempe made this vote- nobody else. This was not a referendum on whether or not people wanted hockey in AZ. This was a referendum as to whether or not Tempe wanted to remain a middle class bedroom community with that state university there. I think though many no votes were cast due to the fearmongering. 5. If Tempe1st had $2mil of funding and the TempeWins had $250k of funding, Meruelo made a HUGE mistake in not allocating resources. His group should've been spent $5-$10mil on TV and radio ads. 6. I think the Salt River Tribal Reservation is still alive. The location would be two miles away from the Tempe one! Tempe would have no say in this at all. The snagging point is that Meruelo would not be able to do gaming there as Salt River has two casinos operating. 7. Agreed that QBC is not getting the team. I grew up in Houston (and was introduced to hockey there in the WHA days). Houston will easily support a franchise. They averaged 7100 one year. They ended up moving b/c the then Rocket/Toyota owner wanted NBA type rent. That's why the Aeros moved. New Rocket/Toyota owner wants an NHL tenant and would likely give an "off capacity" break to an incoming club. Houston SMSA is 40% larger than PHX SMSA. 8. There are hardcore fans in PHX, but not enough of them. Tougher market to crack than Houston IMHO.
My First hockey game was Yotes at Ducks 2012. Even though we are rivals, i have always liked and rooted for the Coyotes. Great fans that have been through a lot. But on a second note, at my old job, i worked at the place where their owner kept his priavte jet, i never met him, only the crew, who were always very chill, but the people that did work with him, did like him a fair bit, but hopefully they can figure this out. I think Salt Lake City could be a cool spot, but this is tough
And Re: Canadians getting mad about the Coyotes being in Arizona in general, I love hearing that argument that "hockey doesn't work in the desert." Hockey's working just fine for the Golden Knights so...
How about "it doesn't work in Arizona." It doesnt matter if its in Phoenix, Tampa, or any other obscure suburb no one has heard before unless you live there.
10:21 I think the other problem with the Coyotes playing at Footprint Center with the Suns is that i'm pretty sure that place is a Basketball specific arena (meaning it's not a multi purpose arena the way MSG, TD Garden, and even Moda Center in Portland are), and if that's the case, having the Coyotes play in Footprint Center would create another situation like when the Islanders played at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, like that'd probably cause a bigger issue than if they just stayed at Mullet Arena forever.
Shannon is THE definitive last word on all things hockey, full stop...simple yet concise, The Hockey Guy breaks down these stories better than anyone in the hockey world...seriously, no one does it better...thank you for all your hard work good sir...
Condolences to the Yotes fans. They are true fans if they still cheer for that team after everything they've gone through. I liked the Yotes as a kid because of Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick, and Nikolai Khabibulin. I also loved their logo and uniforms and was really happy when they brought those back.
Living in Phoenix. There were like campaign videos out there asking voters to vote against the proposition. It televised ever time I watched a hockey game on espn so there was a strong campaign against it. With inflation and the rising costs in Arizona, the campaign pushed heavy on the Coyote organization not paying their bills and taxes points.
@@JuliaHammels the landfill hasn't been used for decades. It has been planned for development since the 90's. The just city doesn't want to pay the 50 milloin dollar it's going to take to clean it up. Apparently the voters don't want a developer to clean it up without taxpayers money either...
Double edged sword here. Good for them for not throwing free money to these rich owners and bad for them as the owners will move the team to a city that will. Need federal legislation that prevents these owners from sponging on the public and their tax money.
The thing is...taxpayers are sick and tired of subsidizing millionaire players and billionaire owners. The various sports franchises talk about ancillary benefits for restaurants, bars, shopping, hotels, etc. but they are not paying the tab...the poor taxpayers are. It is just more corporate welfare at taxpayer expense. I enjoy watching hockey, but it is a private enterprise and should be solely financed by private money. If you have a good product (team) then if you charge a fair price then people will come to watch. If you field a poor team or charge too much, then people will not attend games or buy merch. The benefits are given to the owners, the risk should be theirs as well.
To add further. I’m from a non-traditional market (Kentucky). Growing up we had an AHL team, the Thoroughblades, who were affiliated with the SJ Sharks. They had to share an arena that was way too large for them (a 23,000 person arena). We averaged around 5,000 fans per game which was/is solid for the AHL. Playoff or rivalry games would be between 10,000-13,000. We ended up losing the team because our city planning and zoning commission wouldn’t allow them to build an arena/entertainment complex in a certain area because they didn’t want to clutter the area….fast forward 20+ years that same area has Costco, Cabelas, Apartments, a new Hospital being built, a new school, and new single family homes being built in mass. It’s a thing that many of us who were fans still feel upset over. Tl;dr I understand what Coyotes fans must be feeling. I used to hate the Yotes but honestly have grown to respect and root for them.
Yep. Glendale taxpayers got totally hosed on that bad idea to put a stadium that far away from the majority of their fan base.
Honestly, that makes sense. With such an example nearby, possible for many to just say "no, we're not getting into this." And part of me thinks the turnout was pretty decent. People love having the right to vote and that democratic freedom. But a lot don't actually care about going out of their way to actually do the voting part.
As one Glendale resident asked his city council at one of the meetings about the Coyotes' financial troubles about a decade ago:
"What's it gonna take you people to realize this has been a losing proposition from day one?".
I'm sure a number of residents of Tempe watched and remembered that meeting...and there were LOTS of them!
Vote by mail? Well there's your problem.

The Panthers had an ownership group in the very hard times that included a used car dealership chain owner and my friends wife actually worked for someone in the ownership group. We used to get in an ownership box for games. This guy ran like a small office with 10 employees and he was in the ownership group for the Panthers. And I've heard the same things about the arena in Florida & Ottawa.

Sad...all 4 thousand of you deserve more
I still don't understand the downside to this, basically all private funding, getting rid of a landfill, and getting a new downtown district, you're not gonna get any better deal than that
That's why Tempe City Council voted unanimously for the project to go through.

It wasn’t long ago that everyone was calling for the canes to move, that they didn’t have enough fans, etc. There was always enough fans, the team just hadn’t done enough to bring them in and keep them around. If they had fans that cared they probably could have got at least enough yes votes to sell out a game but they didn’t.

I'm a coyotes fan and already dead inside!" Lol. I'll still love the game... It will be very weird going forward though. Like, what will I do with my collection wall? This makes me so sad. My Mom and Dad became snow birds heading down to Tucson from Michigan for the winter for a handful of years. My Dad and a friend/neighbor would make the drive north to catch the occasional Coyotes games - usually when Detroit was in town. I remember seeing the games on local television in metro Detroit and talking to him about them the next day.

If they're not gonna support the team, then they don't deserve it.

Suddenly getting eliminated from the playoffs doesn't seem so bad. At least my team will be there next year.
You make a valid point. Go Canucks go!

TRUE FACT
The No side also had the backing of labor unions, because the yotes did not commit to union labor building the arena. Tbh bad foresight by the yotes. This is something that happens in most other developments of this magnitude.
Well, the labor unions can pat themselves on the back since there is no way they will be a part of that project now, eh?
Contrast this with the Seattle Kraken, whose owners negotiated a fair deal with local construction unions to build Climate Pledge Arena. Mutual cooperation can go a long way towards getting things done.
From what I’ve heard the Coyotes did have labor unions involve in the project not sure if it was for the arena or for the other areas to be build within the entertainment district but they were going to use them

I've lived in Arizona for 10 years now. I'm a former New Englander who suffered/persevered through being a Red Sox fan regardless of the season's outcome before they finally broke the Curse of the Bambino.
This state's natives flock to winners and only winners. How can anyone expect a professional team to excel when fans don't rally behind them at the worst of times?

Honestly, the whole "hockey in the desert" mentality was always so stupid to me. Yeah, it gets hot here. It gets hot in California, Texas, and Florida too. The problem was never that you can't play hockey in a climate-controlled building in the desert. It was just that the team was never so good that it had super strong support.
As a Hawks fan, I would LOVE a rivalry with a Milwaukee team. Maybe it would dethrone the Blues as my favorite team to hate 😉

I feel bad for the fans of Arizona. I couldn’t imagine losing my team. For the fans I hope they stay and all the best moving forward
The harsh reality is, this team has never been profitable after almost 30 years in Arizona.
@@FischerFan ya I know it makes sense for them to move financially I just feel for the fans that have stuck by them
In my opinion the people have spoken and said no we don't want a team, we don't care about hockey. And how many arenas do they need in one area anyway? Don't they already have 2 or 3 arenas? Why would taxpayers want to spend money on more?
Leave it to Maricopa County, AZ to treat these areas as "cities" when they are literally ONE BIG ASS metro area stuck in a desert
@@MarloSoBalJr No kidding!
I….. have no words. I hope your all happy at least.
This is bringing me bad memories of when Seattle Supersonics left. I hope Coyotes don't leave like this.
I am always amazed when there is important nhl news and I feel the need to first watch Shannon rather than the big sports networks.
Landfill gonna look great next to the encroaching homeless situation in that state. Good job, AZ.
That's what the voters want. The landfill and other general blight keeps rents low.
I appreciate all the information you talk about
They should had a vote in Edmonton and Calgary.
Spending billions of public dollars on a areana for private organization is crazy.
Canada doesn't hold special elections. The Canadian public gets no say in anything. Daddy Government decides everything for us.
Hockey is literally the only draw for those cities. Vital to those economies whether you like it or not.
Hockey in Arizona? Hah
I care so much and this is heartbreaking. I grew up in AZ playing hockey since I was 7, the yotes were my first jersey.
Nooo! I’m so sad, don’t leave desert buddy 😢
Seems like the native reservation land back up plan you talked about last year, should be the way to go
And Re: Canadians getting mad about the Coyotes being in Arizona in general, I love hearing that argument that "hockey doesn't work in the desert." Hockey's working just fine for the Golden Knights so...
How about "it doesn't work in Arizona." It doesnt matter if its in Phoenix, Tampa, or any other obscure suburb no one has heard before unless you live there.

I think the other problem with the Coyotes playing at Footprint Center with the Suns is that i'm pretty sure that place is a Basketball specific arena (meaning it's not a multi purpose arena the way MSG, TD Garden, and even Moda Center in Portland are), and if that's the case, having the Coyotes play in Footprint Center would create another situation like when the Islanders played at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, like that'd probably cause a bigger issue than if they just stayed at Mullet Arena forever.
Seems like Gary's pet project is in danger of being gone from Arizona. I feel sorry for the Coyotes fan in Arizona.
Shannon is THE definitive last word on all things hockey, full stop...simple yet concise, The Hockey Guy breaks down these stories better than anyone in the hockey world...seriously, no one does it better...thank you for all your hard work good sir...
What about your thoughts of Oregon ? Hockey is big out there
Condolences to the Yotes fans. They are true fans if they still cheer for that team after everything they've gone through.
I liked the Yotes as a kid because of Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick, and Nikolai Khabibulin. I also loved their logo and uniforms and was really happy when they brought those back.
I'm familiar with the feeling all to well
Living in Phoenix. There were like campaign videos out there asking voters to vote against the proposition. It televised ever time I watched a hockey game on espn so there was a strong campaign against it. With inflation and the rising costs in Arizona, the campaign pushed heavy on the Coyote organization not paying their bills and taxes points.
Without the Yotes, would Austin Matthews even be hockey player? he'd probably an accountant, flight attendant or a doctor?
You know Dr. Matthews has a nice ring to it 😉
True fact.
I love this game, you don't think the drop off in Quebec born players doesn't have something to do with the loss of the nordiques?
He was better at baseball than hockey his father said. He would be in the MLB right now guy is a natural athlete.
Who is Austin Matthews? Is he as good as Auston Matthews?
wasnt the backup plan on tribal land in tempe?
If Quebec is out is there any possibility of a different Canadian city?
Not really. Size of any other Canadian market would be an issue.
Hamilton seems like an obvious choice.
i find it crazy they voted to maybe keep a landfill compared to a cool entertainment district
@@JuliaHammels the landfill hasn't been used for decades. It has been planned for development since the 90's. The just city doesn't want to pay the 50 milloin dollar it's going to take to clean it up. Apparently the voters don't want a developer to clean it up without taxpayers money either...
@@JuliaHammels I dont think its in use now just setting there for along time
Double edged sword here. Good for them for not throwing free money to these rich owners and bad for them as the owners will move the team to a city that will. Need federal legislation that prevents these owners from sponging on the public and their tax money.
NO it couldn't have worked. Get hockey out of that state, thank god Tempe residents didn't want a failing team for the next how many ever years.
Arizona move talks are the videos that let me find your channel originally years ago. Weird deja vu moment.
Watch them move to Albuquerque and Phoenix try to sue them for moving.
Also, I hope Tempe First has fun with their landfill.
The most coherent argument against the development I have seen is that the landfill and other general blight keeps rents low.
Lol. ABQ can't support a pro team. The city can't even support itself. Wish it weren't so, since I live in the area.
