The early Raven Guard art concepts drew from Irish culture and tradition, drawing upon the corvid theme from one of the shapeshifting animal forms of the Morrigan, the Irish goddess of war. Since then, crows and other corvid birds were considered good luck and victory in times of war, so I could probably see Corax, and by extension the Raven Guard/successors, speak in an Irish accent.

5:38 "The fact that one is due to a functioning and healthy society, and the other due to sheer terror, is completely irrelevant." Where in the lore Nostramo is a functioning and healthy society?
(Edit: Read the responses to me in this comment chain, as some Romanians have popped up to tell us how it is. You should in general prefer what people say about their society rather than Google or news, as media is very skewed nowadays which is why I ended my statement here originally with "Maybe I'm wrong and some Romanian can correct me".) No but seriously Majorkill, Romania had a horrible dictatorship with some of the worst secret police terror in the Eastern Block (although those countries were kind of treating it like a competition of who can be worse so it's not saying much) and then when they got rid of Communism their police force and bureaucracy pretty much was inherited from the dictatorship which leads to record rates of police brutality there even to this day... The last time I heard of Romania, it was something about how cop brutality at protests was shocking because they beat civilians for no reason, how some person was beaten brutally in custody by multiple officers while basically being helpless and how someone else got shot dead mysteriously while being arrested. Maybe I'm wrong and some Romanian can correct me, but I really don't get the impression Romania has a lack of law enforcement by terror.
@@majorkill Maybe Croatian google is racist against Romanians because the first thing I get when I search for Romania is how some EU organization condemns their police brutality xd
Before '89, yeah, it had been pretty much Nostramo around here. Nowadays (well, before 2020 anyway) it's not anywhere near as bad. That whole cop brutality at protests was exagerated (I mean, compared to what you see in other Eastern block countries, you could call it mild). Crime rates vary wildly based on region, city and even neighbourhood. Overall, could be better, could be worse. But one thing I can say for certain is that a functioning and healthy society Romania is not.
Americans here will claim corvus he appears to have finally grown out of his emo phase and is absolutely clapping cheeks in the warp and seems to be the only primarch to have done so that we know of in the last 10k years. Go demon bird batman.

I mean you guys have blue in your flag :p Edit : either this dude changed his comment or I was drunk when i responded. Edit2 : my uncle is Italian so I can safely say that french people love the colour blue
@Majorkill no we don't xD also here's the reason about the color blue: "Italian sports teams play in blue shirts rather than the colours of their national flag in a custom dating back to the country's pre-republican days. Blue was the official colour of the Royal House of Savoy and this tribute to the Italian monarchy survives today."
Are people not aware of the fact that Northern Italy is pretty much Switzerland? Of course there were and are tons of blonde and blue-eyed Italians. P.s That's why Northern Italian food is way better than Southern Italian food!
The reason I support the primsrchs adapting to the planets look to fit in, is because vulkan. Jet black obsidian skin is well, not natural and lore states the jet black comes from the planets mineral and vulcanic exposure. Magnus being red, easy, the warp and his affinity for it changed his skin to reflect the warp, which time is subjective in, he could have spent a lot of baby time there. I like to think of the primarchs all looking like DnD changelings before they landed.
If I remember correctly, Fulgrim was just a mass of light until the people on his planet found him and he changed to look like them, just more beautiful.
Dorn is also the german word for thorn, which is also the name of an old city (Thorn or Torun) in eastern prussia, where the teutonic knights reign. So winner winner on that.
I've seen Corvus Corax live on stage. They're delightfully mental. Kind of iron age folk with a medieval death metal aesthetic. They also perform as a jazz band.
I have to say that based solely on his appearance, Sanguinius seems inspired of neo-classical portrayals of Vercingetorix, the Gallic French opponent of Caesar. The long flowing golden hair and fair skin is kind of a giveaway, as well as the portrayal of “‘nobility.”
Angron being based on Spartacus could make him Thracian, which would make him South Eastern European, not Roman. Maybe Horus is Sicilian, those guys are a whole mix too due to the many nations that occupied the island, plus we all know Horus was a mob boss, so that fits too.
I mean Horus does look pretty Italian in most of his art, especially the third pic of him without armor and with his sword on the wiki, looks like Joe Rogan lol

After a quick Google search, it seems to to me that Sanguinius has more of a Baroque inspiration, than a reinessence one, this can be seen in the fact that reinessance art is more focused on man; instead baroque art is more focused on religious themes, such as God and Angels; which are very present in the Blood ANGELS' iconography. This does not mean much except that Sangunius has more of an influence born in Rome (the city in which the Baroque was mostra prelevant), than one originating in Florence (the city in where the reneissance was most prelevant)
Well, it was said in one book (don’t recall witch one) that Sanguinius had an Italian accent/spoke with one for a bit so that might actually make a lot of sense regarding the blood angels part.
Just think about Dante, Mephiston and over name like that and we could say that Sanguinius was clearly Italian ( during the Renaissance ) Also the arts and sculptures that BA mades...
2:32 the ancient nation of Phoenicia comes to mind, especially given the “Phoenician” references; Phoenicia’s name is also derived from that kingdom’s most popular export to Greece, _purple_ dye. Edit: I didn’t get to his explanation before I paused to type this
I think the fact that the pyramids of Prospero more resembled Egyptian pyramids (relatively smooth limestone pyramids that come to a point), as well as other common Egyptian motifs (hieroglyphs, scarabs, the gold and blue color combo, some of the Thousand Son's helmets resembling a nemes, etc.) firmly places their inspiration in Ancient Egypt. It has a splash of Aztec with the name of the capital, Tizca
I honestly don't think it matters, considering that all the gene pools for humans greatly varied from centuries of nuclear warfare and space exploration and colonization. A Cadian is genetically different than a Catachan and so on. The emperor probably had a gene vault to help make his Primarchs and the planets that they were raised in caused more mutations in them.
It seems to me that when it comes to Vulkan and the Salamanders, people can't really get past the color of his skin to understand the cultural and ethnic influences for that character. Every time I read something about him, I am reminded of the Greek/Roman god Hephaestus/Vulcan due to the huge focus as a legion on crafting war gear and their obsession with fire. I also look at the Promethean Cult as another huge indicator of their connection with Greek mythology. Prometheus was one of mankind's greatest benefactors who gave them fire which had been kept from them by the gods up to that point. This is another very strong reason for their love of fire. Additionally, when a Captain dies, he is chained to a block of ceramite, just like Prometheus, and is then lowered into volcanic rock for more fire symbolism. Finally, Prometheus' love for humans also seems to have translated over with the Salamanders going way out of their way to protect humans every chance they get. I am sure there are more aspects to Vulkan and the Salamanders but it seems to me that this is another example of how heavily influenced GW was by Greek and Roman mythology and history.
Its obvious that GW was inspired by a lot of ancient mythology, but it is also obvious they changed many things up. There is no definitive 1 to 1 comparison between a primarch and a character from our history. My headcanon is that Vulkan actually has african genetics but also a charcoal black skin, with his sons just inheriting the skin tone but not his african "looks" (at least not 100%) - GW showed black Ultra Marines on a book cover and in one of the HH books, Jagathai was criticised for recruiting mainly people with asian features (for the legion´s cultural reasons or something like that), so yeah.
I would argue that Guilleman is meant to be a stand-in for Caesar Augustus as they both have blonde hair, and took over running the empire after their adoptive fathers were killed. Both are known for their administrative skills and the UM are obviously inspired by the romans as you said.
I enjoyed this video, but Guilliman is probably based more off a Roman/Athenian hybrid than a Roman/French one. This covers his obsession with laws, culture, the colour blue, colonising and the use of the ultra symbol which is Greek.
@@padrelupus Considering that the French renaissance as much as any renaissance was inspired by classical Greek and Roman (which was in turn heavily inspired by the classical Greek culture) cultures, art and architecture, we can see why many European cultures have many similarities and roots with classical Greece. But that doesn't mean that they originated from that European country. We can trace other similarities as well, as the Governing style is very similar to that of many Greek city states (the 500 worlds can be seen as 500 cities) and also the relation between the Space Marines and the common people, the 13th keep their history and memories from before becoming Space Marines, while others would wipe everything out.
I think we can attribute the architecture of the Ultra boys to the fact that Roman held territory in Gaul, which comprises modern day France, Belgium and Luxembourg. So Robby being blonde and having a lot of Roman influence isn't that far fetched.
@@Agrargorn Because Ultramar is possible a reference to Hadrian's Wall, amplified to fit the extreme scale of WH40k. Macragge sounds a _lot_ like it could be a Scottish Gaelic name. The Roman Empire's northernmost extreme territory dipped a few miles into what we recognize as the territory of the Gaelic peoples and the Picts, the respective ancestors of modern Scots and Irishmen, who intermingled when they weren't trying to beat the snot out of each other; this boundary was fortified with Hadrian's Wall, and the territory north of it was considered the frontier, too wild and rebellious for "civilization" to survive, mostly because the "civilized" Roman Legions kept getting bodied by great hordes of "barbarians" who swarmed from the hills and highlands--armed with primitive weapons and _huge_ balls, and little else--to tear them to bits. In effect, Hadrian's Wall was the furthest extent that the Gaels felt like letting the Romans expand, ruthlessly punishing every subsequent effort to surpass that limit. In a way, Ultramar--the capital world of which is Macragge--is like the Hadrian's Wall of the Imperium of Man. Beyond the borders of Ultramar is the Eastern Fringe proper, which is so far from Terra that most of it doesn't see the light of the Astronomicon; without that light, proper Human civilization is impossible, because Warp travel becomes a game of chance with rigged dice. Attempts to spread beyond that point have been slow, costly, and typically short-lived.
@@anthonylamonica8301 hey, this sounds quite reasonable. I've never looked at the idea that way, but yes, this gives the sehmentum ultima a better meaning. I guess its because if I think of the Hadrians wall, I didn't think of high cultured cities like the megalopolis on mcgragge get attributed

Magnus and the Thousand Sons are honestly my favorites for culture; post heresy they rock a blue-gold color scheme with Egyptian like Pharoah styled crowns and mantles on their helms. All of their names in the Legion itself are from and based off ancient Egypt and Persia. Ahriman, the First Captain and Chief Librarian is named after the Zoroastrian embodiment of darkness, corruption, and lies. His twin Ohrumzd is from the diety of light, truth, and goodness. Even further, many of the concepts of Prospero can be attributed to ancient Egypt and Persia as well as the Legion's obsession for knowledge to better themselves as is the message of Zoroastrianism. The Thousand Sons being the most psyker based and gifted Astartes is also likely a homage to Zoroastrians being called Magi and sorcerors by others.

Their nature of stealth scouts would also indicate towards your stereotypical portrayal of those guys.
Just a quick sidenote, I think lorgar would be a good "candidate" for being phoenician in origin, that still gives him Northern African decent but explains his affinity for characters and symbols, as we adopted the phoenician alphabet. It would also explain his general lack of violence himself as the phoenicians tended to "mercenary" fight their battles rather than recruit their own. Other than that I agree with most of your decision

i personally agree with both theories on how the primarchs landed on their planets, i think that at least Vulkan did adapt to have the pitch black skin and bright red eyes
7:24 I actually like this second theory more. It’s very primarchy. Having the warp gods mutate their appearance to help them fit just doesn’t feel right. Maybe it was by the emperor’s design because the scattering was actually planned? Either way, maggy could just be red because he a mutant freak due to being extra nerdy.
also what about the whole planet swap laughing god thing. someone else was suppose to land on Mongolia planet. so the khan looks like he fits in, but he almost didnt? i think the best solution here is that the primarchs do indeed adapt to their surroundings super fast, and maybe that causes them to rapidly evolve an ethnicity close the that of the natives convergently, and then when they meet people they probably change more as they go through primarch puberty to look more like their society. this is a brilliant and perfect design if you knew the primarchs would be scattered, and of course we have many hints that seem to indicated the big e did have some idea something like this might happen.
I've always imagined The Lion to be associated with the legend of King Arthur; space King Arthur, slumbering for 10,000 years, awaiting the day of return when he is most needed. So, I feel that he is a Post-Roman Celtic Briton, rather than an Anglo-Saxon.,
I've noticed that a lot of the World Eaters have a Slavic accent, and while we know that none of the World Eaters were Nucerian, I wonder if (much like the Terran born Artellus Numeon of the Salamanders being voiced with a West African accent) Angron is supposed to be Slavic too. He's clearly meant to be like a slave during the Roman empire, and many of the slaves were either Slavs, Goths or Gauls, and I don't get the sense of Goth or Gaul from him. Another thing... Spartacus was a Thracian, so classical-era equivalent of someone from the Balkans. Angron makes a lot of sense as some kind of Serb or Albanian.
That's very good point, Balkanians are hot-blooded Slavs. And I think Majorkill could dive more deep into history, he use absolutely no aspect of Slavian/Sarmatian culture what I see very often in western civilisation that they have no clue about Aryans and Slavs. Also another thing is that Aryans are basically all proto Slavic (Sarmatian) people, blue eyes and blonde hair is geen which is originated purely from western Siberia. Leman Russ basically means Leman of Rus- Rus is land of people of Rus which are today Russians.. Also Siberian geen is why Alexander the Great has blue eyes, and many of his soldiers too, they are from Macedonia and others parts of sarmatia and they don't have much in common with Greeks, ethnically and culturally they are closer to Persians.
11:13 “most salamanders look like white dudes photoshopped to be black” I noticed that too but I didn’t wanna say anything cause I felt like I would be the villain.
Ah, ethnicity in 40K. I still remember being called an ignorant racist for arguing that the black Ultramarine in the cover of Avenging Son was perfectly in-line with the rest of the lore and not just some woke plot to score easy browny points
Leman Russ could also be of East-European descent. His last name "Russ" is similar to the word "Rus" which was used to refer to Slaws, especially the one in modern-day Ukraine and Russia. And this region was conquered by the Vikings (who were then assimilated).
Absolutely agree, and also thing is that blond hair and blue eyes are geen originated from western Ural, what is land where Moscovians, people of mother Rus originated.

You should in general prefer what people say about their society rather than Google or news, as media is very skewed nowadays which is why I ended my statement here originally with "Maybe I'm wrong and some Romanian can correct me".)
No but seriously Majorkill, Romania had a horrible dictatorship with some of the worst secret police terror in the Eastern Block (although those countries were kind of treating it like a competition of who can be worse so it's not saying much) and then when they got rid of Communism their police force and bureaucracy pretty much was inherited from the dictatorship which leads to record rates of police brutality there even to this day...

I thought that Magnus might be more Aztec inspired with a mix of Egyptian. Both had pyramids.
The gene pool might vary, maybe not that much. But the land remains.
Yes, but TTS thaught us all, that Vulkan clearly is of Jamaican origin
Its obvious that GW was inspired by a lot of ancient mythology, but it is also obvious they changed many things up. There is no definitive 1 to 1 comparison between a primarch and a character from our history.
My headcanon is that Vulkan actually has african genetics but also a charcoal black skin, with his sons just inheriting the skin tone but not his african "looks" (at least not 100%) - GW showed black Ultra Marines on a book cover and in one of the HH books, Jagathai was criticised for recruiting mainly people with asian features (for the legion´s cultural reasons or something like that), so yeah.

Colonising the symbol? What the fuck are you talking about?
@@padrelupus Considering that the French renaissance as much as any renaissance was inspired by classical Greek and Roman (which was in turn heavily inspired by the classical Greek culture) cultures, art and architecture, we can see why many European cultures have many similarities and roots with classical Greece. But that doesn't mean that they originated from that European country. We can trace other similarities as well, as the Governing style is very similar to that of many Greek city states (the 500 worlds can be seen as 500 cities) and also the relation between the Space Marines and the common people, the 13th keep their history and memories from before becoming Space Marines, while others would wipe everything out.

but why call a roman/gaul influenced Planet McCragge?
@@Agrargorn because GW, consistency is a foreign concept to them.

@@unitedeagle4046 but he clearly has african features dude the he is actually black black you can tell just by looking at him
I mean
Ethiopians are dark, very dark, but have """white""" traces, so who knows. Vulkan -lives- may be Ethiopian
Rogal Dorns personality and the engineering Fists are so german. Also they have german names and a prussian codex by the old Terra. And the Black Templar are also german.
The more Majorkill makes these kinds of videos, the more subconsciously I humanize the Primarchs
Hey mate! Really love how you built a whole thing by yourself! I remember back in the day when it was you and some homies in some dusty computer lab with, like, one pc! really doing it and keep it up, bruh!!
THEY ARE ALL ENGLISH! One of the lost Primarchs was Welsh, just to tick boxes.
Phoenician roughly meant "The purple folk" and they were named after the precious purple pigment that they made and exported all over the ancient world.
"Perturabo's love of siege and conquering"
Perturabo: NO ONE UNDERSTANDS ME!!!!
yeah our boy bo is what happens when ya give DaVinci ( who was also forced to make weapons of war against his will so no wonder pert likes him) superpowers and remove any sense of empathy he might have cuz the joy of creation is lost to him.
Apparently a plastic surgeon in Australia said MajorKill showed up in his office asking if he could get metal port implants on his body because he wanted to look like a Space Marine out of armor. Apparently he kept non-stop repeating that he thought it would make him look "edgy" but that he didn't want the ports to be to big and look "cringy." When the plastic surgeon said he couldn't do it, Majorkill kept saying he could pay double because he was famous on RUclips. Majorkill apparently wouldn't shut up so the surgeon faked a call to the operating room so he could leave.
Hawt.
Rogal: Direct, pragmatic, and has a love for engineering. That kinda makes him more Dutch tho than german.
Uhhh no? Pretty sure that's a german thing not a dutch thing.
He has no sense of humour so he is probably german :D
@@ranfan1820 Partially right. We are called direct and pragmatic. Engineering not so much, it's mostly because of our waterworks. Then again, Germany is mostly known for it's engineering because of cars and WW2 technological advances over it's enemies.
Either way, Dorn is not funny and has no sense of humour, so I agree that he's more German. Personally I'd say Austrian/Swiss though.
Iron hands should be the "barbarian" germans who were mostly hunter gatherers and raiders. Very focused on strength. For the diff between them and the celtic gauls, rome kicked the shit out of gaul but was pretty scared of the germans. Great vid as always though
Albia is Albania. Britain is old Albion / Hy Brasil
The dark angels are the ones that most resemble Teutonic Knights, and Dorn is more Prussian, although, saying that all their skill at sieges could actually suggest French heritage
Also dorn is Norman possibly Gustaf Adolphus the whole ice King thing but much more likely either Bohemond of the first crusade, or possibly William giscard his daddy certainly a Norman Castle building strategically acute conqueror. And GW has a strongly anglocentric bias in their readings of history so there is the possibility that he's not Beaumont at all but in fact Edward probably the third or just possibly Henry II either way definitely a Norman
Hy Brasil is just Brazil
Louden Haga no it's not, it's a mythical island said to exist off of the western coast of Ireland
@@Coproquim and in 40k Hy Brasil is a hive city in Brazil
Louden Haga no it's not, in 30k there is a hive city in a place called hy brasil, but it's never stated that it's anywhere near Merika
The litmus test for where between Egypt and Iran Magnus is will be how much of a gardening he likes to do.
Which is funny since it's hard to gardening in any spot between the two and substantially easier in each.
@@thelordofcringe and that's why for millennia the sign of wealth and excellence for rulers was by the size of their palaces and the greatness of their gardens.
We know vulkan has red eyes because of the planet he landed on, so if his eyes are red because of the planet that also must mean his skin is black because of the planet. So if you use any amount of common sense you would know vulkan is only black because of the planet he landed on.
But let's be real everyone can't remove the Jamaican Vulkan from TTS from the mind
His artistic depictions look 'Sub-Saharan' not that artist interpretations means a whole lot. Culturally there is some Greek influence (like almost every Primarch it seems). Mediterranean is a good bet for most of the primarchs really.
I would argue that the Imperial Fists are inspired by the Holy Roman Empire (Germany). One of the few empires to use yellow as the primary colour in their flag, are known for building castles, have no humour, and are obviously Saxon. Not to mention, the Holy Roman Empire gave birth to the Teutonic Order which is obviously where the Black Templars take most of their influence.
Hey Majorkill, didn't Cegorach swap the planets that Fulgrim and Jhagatai would land on?
How would this effect what they were meant to be?
In all fairness, the kahn landed among the tribes people of the steppe, and Fulgrim may well have landed among the people later conquered by the Kahn, as for chemos the home planet of Fulgrim, yeah I have no idea how the kahn would have fit in
10:00 Luprecal is actually the name for the small cave in which according to the legend dwelled the wolf stepmother that fed and raised Romulus and Remus, mythical brothers that were said to had founded Rome. :)
The best joke in the video is MK finding a Ms.
i personally agree with both theories on how the primarchs landed on their planets, i think that at least Vulkan did adapt to have the pitch black skin and bright red eyes
If he emulated Spartacus he is Bulgarian and The Teutonic Knights were the Black Templars
Exactly !
Bulgarians did not live in what is today Bulgaria during the lifetime of Spartacus. Thracians did.
Iron Warriors is definitely Greece.
I mean, look at Loyalist successor chapters of the Iron Warriors. They're basically Space Spartans.
Thanks for giving us Corax, Majorkill.
I've always imagined The Lion to be associated with the legend of King Arthur; space King Arthur, slumbering for 10,000 years, awaiting the day of return when he is most needed. So, I feel that he is a Post-Roman Celtic Briton, rather than an Anglo-Saxon.,
Sounds like Barbarossa
4:13 "Leman loves wolves and F***ing..." I'd rather not delve too deep in this rabbit hole... 😨
Never have I ever thought that Romania would have a shout-out in WH40K. I can die in peace
Only major kill answers the real questions we secretly crave
Mate primarch 11 is clearly a kiwi. The emperor was cool with 2 and 11 both having so many sheep about, seemed sus.
"I'm not just a pretty face, ay?"
Oh noooo, nobody would have ever accused you of that, Majorkill!
Rogal Dorn is German because he doesn't have a sense of humor
Lorgar has the Greek alphabet in his armour. I can see θ , Δ, Π , Λ , Φ , but then again half of these guys have Greek symbols in their armour.
"Vulkan actually looks like a black guy"
Uhhhh lol not in any of the artwork I've seen of him... he does look like a standard bald white guy photoshopped with gray-black skin. The nose is too thin, the brows are too subdued... lips are too thin. Maybe in more modern illustrations they made him look more like a black guy but definitely not in the picture you used for this video lol.
By the way, does anyone else see gw's attempt at brand naming knockoff mythology for the irony that it is?
That sounds incredibly stereotypical.
this comment is old but ill reply anyway yea this is very stereotypical like the other guy said you cant define africans by such small distinctions black people are way too diverse many people break the norms youre describing
