Thank you for your great video essay, I photographed Tommy and his wife Dee for the cover of a magazine (PBI), they are both very nice, humble, and down-to-earth, a real pleasure to work with.
Tommy Hilfiger was a big icon back in the 90s. I remember when I was in school, if you had Tommy Hilfiger on you, was the man or the woman on campus. Tommy Hilfiger came into that time strong and hard. A lot of young people were wearing his clothing as well as some of the older people. I remember we had pajama day at school one time where all the kids could wear their pajamas on that one particular day to school. No one wore anything inappropriate back then. But it was just one kid who wore name brand clothing all the time. His mother spoiled him. But he wore on pajama day a Tommy Hilfiger robe set, meaning he had the pajamas and the robe all matching Tommy Hilfiger. So needless to say, this kid came to school clean in Tommy Hilfiger pajamas and a robe. But Tommy Hilfiger still has not regained its glory here in the United States like it once was back in the 90s, and let me explain. We have a Tommy Hilfiger store in one location in my state that I know of, and I've been in the store, and they have some nice clothing. They had one piece of clothing in there one time that was very tempting for me to purchase, but I did not purchase it. But his stores are found in outlet malls. Back in the 90s, he was in Dillard's, the luxury shopping store. But you will not find a stitch of Tommy Hilfiger products in Dillard's nowadays. You can only find him in outlet stores now, which is still okay, but it lets you know that the brand has dropped in its selling locations. When name brand products that used to be carried out in high-end stores end up going to outlet malls it makes the brand look as if it has dropped some of its selling quality and to be honest about it that's what has happened. Now there's nothing wrong with going to an outlet mall I believe you can get good deals there and I don't mind shopping there at all I'm not embarrassed about it but Tommy Hilfiger is not what it once was here in the U.S.of A. But by watching this video, it seems as if he's thriving in other countries, which is good for the business. I purchased some Tommy Hilfiger products the other year, I believe, or the year before from one of their outlet stores, and it's still good-looking stuff.
If they planned strategic comeback and adapted to this younger generation. They could make it work especially with the rise of the Y2K aesthetic and the younger generation wanting that " vintage" '90s look.
Very true and since Tommy Hill was a big part of the 90s look. I was there and it was everywhere. Also was one the labels like CK that was counterfeited and easily found n NYC for less.
I remember that campaign. I’m sure Anne Kline, Dana Buchman, Ellen Tracey, Pamela Dennis, Anna Sui, Betsy Johnson, Donna Karen etc had no problem with it. 😑 As for the racism claims, that was a thing for a while. Calvin Kline was accused of it too. As a POC, I remember people boycotting TH and CK for a while but TH including people with disabilities in his fashion shows his brand really has heart. I haven’t checked out the brand in many years but I will. Great video 💚
Since I’ve been into fashion since the early 80s, designer brands were meant or designed for the elite. So most of these brands targeted the elite crowd until it became a hip hop urban trend. They didn’t fight it bc sakes and image of the grand was doing great, but that market was not the target or marketed for. The preppy look in the 80s appealed to mostly well to do elite folks and not the hip hop urban crowd but the label was adopted by that group. Also in the 90s in all changed and the big thing was urban street wear and when Tommy Hill took off bc of the bold colors and classic looks. Now the designers target the urban crowd, but not before bc designers were all about exclusive and why designer clothes cost 3 to 4 times more than the more common clothes. Meaning most ppl. who bought designer clothes bought to separate themselves from other ppl. So that crowd didn’t want to associate with a label mostly worn by urban and hip hop folks. So Tommy gained a new group of customers, but lost another.
I have a Tommy Hilfiger Blazer I bought about 4 years ago. People always compliment me on. It’s made perfect fantastic quality and it has a timeless appeal. To this day. It’s something I wear that still makes people turn their heads. 👍 😊
I own a couple of TH shirts and some sweaters..theres about this brand that takes me back. Its nostalgic and I really like it. I can relate it with A&F....theres something WOW about these brands.
They completely skipped that. He didn't embrace "urban" culture until after the remarks. By that time it was too late and the main people who purchased his clothes stopped.
THAT NEVER HAPPENED. Lol. That was a Rumor. It wasn't Rolanda, it was Supposedly Oprah. Everybody just went with it and didn't do their research. Tell me if one person can pull up those receipts after 26-27 years. NOPE. Go look at Tommy Hilfiger Fashion Shows in 1995. Not one White Person Modeling clothes. Aliyah, Naughty By Nature, LL Cool J, Grand Puba. ALL Modeling his Clothes and Performing. Grand Puba said HIMSELF he used to pull up to the Projects dolo in 94 and drop him off Bags of Clothes. This was before he Blew Up. So Stop It. He got written off for no Reason because of a Rumor that MOST didn't do the KNOWLEDGE on. So Stop it. If he was doing all that in 94, and that rumor hit around 98-99, how would that make sense? Smh. And this is Coming from a Black Man who was there.
This is the one logo store where I don’t think the logo usage is the problem with interfering with branding or design. I just think that the color signature collection can be a commitment that people have to find in their wardrobe because the clothing is almost capsule on its own. Most people are trying to build their essentials and then the luxury of whatever they would like to wear as statement pieces or even a literal luxury brand
I live in Europe, and I stopped buying Tommy Hilfiger for around 5 years due to the significant decline in quality. Fabrics became cheap, and garments were falling apart.
Not sure how they just completely forgot to mention Grand Puba, for real. Yes, Snoop sold that one rugby but Puba has been in the trenches with Puba way before Snoop performed in that rugby.
I live in Miami and the only people that shop in the Tommy store are tourists. 🤔 Times have changed! I’m surprised stores like Tommy, Abercrombie, Banana Republic, & Guess, are still around. It’s ALWAYS dead in those stores down here. 👀
Ironic to see the clip of a fashion show where the audience is sitting down. Years ago I went to a TH shop with my extended family, all of us intending to spend a fair amount of money. After a while I was feeling some back pain (I had broken my back in a motorcycle accident a few years earlier). I asked if I could have a chair to sit down for a few minutes. I was repeatedly told sitting down was against company policy. I gathered the family together and we all left without purchasing anything. I have never bought anything from TH since that moment. I imagine Mr Hilfiger would be deeply saddened by my poor customer experience. 😢
Just a cheap knock of Ralph Lauren. They never a real comeback in. They sell the brand at Walmart. Nothing exclusive or fashionable if you're doing that
I Prefer RL Too But Both Of Them Make Good Clothes.Tommy Hilfiger Was Genius In The Early 90's Whit Colorful Items Shirts, Jackets Sweats...Whit Good Quality And His Logo Blue White And Red Becomes Mnemonic, Than RL Create The Polo Sport In 1993 For Stopping Tommy 's Popularity. Tommy Hilfiger Have His Own Style And He Never Was A Ralph Lauren Replica.
Tommy Hill was very smart investing in communities of color, supporting designers of color. That helped the brand a lot. Will it roll back on its DEI innitiatives because of this new administration?

Hilfiger is still popular in Europe!
I remember Snoop Dogg wore that Tommy rugby. Made it popular instantly !

I thought he made the derogatory remarks on the Rolanda Show in 1994.
They completely skipped that. He didn't embrace "urban" culture until after the remarks. By that time it was too late and the main people who purchased his clothes stopped.
@nadas.5643 i think all of that was debunked multiple videos have covered it look it up

Yes he did not want "urban rap culture" associated with his preppy brand vision...so rappers obliged him.
I cant get enough of your content!
Great video!! BUT !!! I almost stopped watching it ? To many ads from RUclips was annoying 😮 every other minute of your video!
Thank you so much for this video!
loved your video! thank you!

I like the Tommy hillier brand, and buy some of the clothes I also gift some to people I like. From Australia.
Tommy is the new Gap

Im ready to go been to just that for the longest 🙄
It was brand hype. The clothes were not well made.
Yall have pissed me off sitting here all these years WAITING with no fucking money 😤 😒 😑 🙄
Been through the 90s , Other than color way, enlarged logo, I don’t see anything attractive. Material quality doesn’t match the pricing.
A cheap version of Ralph Lauren..

@@jadktimeless2831 thank you!!
I'm a LoHead, but Tommy is Def a Legend. No denying it. At all.
❤
He was mocked by Spike Lee in Bamboozled. (ruclips.net/video/se0TMqjP2yQ/видео.htmlsi=hdv2IsphEdon_Yci)
He needs a face lift lip lift and so on, he looks so angry.
😂

Gross ad for a dying brand.
People still wear designer clothes?
People never stopped.
Proud to say I do not own a single piece of Tommy Hilfiger clothing.
Why and you don’t care for the label?
Overrated!
