One of the attributes of Benetton's advertising that was glossed over in this video in order to jump to discussion of the controversial advertising is the fact that Benetton was, at the time, the biggest international brand featuring models of varying ethnicities in its advertising -- and often in the same ad. In the USA, a Benetton ad is probably the first place I saw an Asian face selling clothing and not laundry products. (Remember those "ancient Chinese secret" ads for Calgon laundry softener?) When I was in high school in the 80s, Benetton was at an entry-level luxury price point, with truly exceptional Made in Italy knitwear. Even the tshirts were Made in Italy. By the time I was in grad school, the sweaters were barely shaped correctly and made in Romania and Bangladesh. Then the brand, as ubiquitous in North America as The Gap, just disappeared.
I feel like as Benetton was on its way out fast fashion like the Abercrombie rebrand was on its way in. Mossimo moved from surf and skate shops to Target. People wanted a cheaper worse version of Abercrombie, we got Hollister, Old Navy, H&M. I just found a box of 90s clothes and its kind of ridiculous how much better made it is.
Late 70s early 80s - I remember what you mentioned. The first time seeing different people was so good, and I do remember the prices were not expensive compared to department stores and other clothing shops.esp. for quality. I also remember the late 70s GAP being where we could go to get the cheapest price on Levis. We would go and get levis for 15 bucks and 2-3 shirts for seven bucks. Around the late 80s I stopped going in to Benetton. Selection and quality diminished.
I remembered there were models with different skins all in one ad, and the colours were so vibrant those models actually made sense. Nothing the current DIE can compete.
@ChucksSEADnDEAD same here. I remember being in high school when I first remember seeing their ads on billboards and buses and in magazines. The fragrance "Colors" I discovered while in my early teens is still permanently imprinted in my memories. Once in a while I will smell something that reminds me of it.
No fashion brand - or luxury brand - has ever been interested in anything other than sales and money. That’s fine, that’s business but never believe the claims that they are doing anything other than making cash. Claims about wonderful things for the environment, welfare, underpaid workers etc etc are always false.
I loved Benetton when I was at school in 85 . Probably first brand even bought into . Loved the sweatshirts and duffle bags. Remember autumn 1984 and it was cool for lads to wear pink Benetton sweatshirts and cords . Those were the days 😊

My first job out of school was Benetton Dublin. The Benetton clothes I wore then were not only joyful but great quality. The clothes lasted decades. I’d shop there again, if I was sure nobody was being exploited in their production lines.
They even had their own underwear brand called under colors of Benetton. They also had a sister company, more high market, called Sisley. And they even had a magazine for a bit. Their marketing campaigns were so bold and controversial.
In the 80s, Esprit and Benetton was what every girl in my school either wore or wanted to wear but couldn't afford it. I lived in a very small beach town in NJ and as small as our town was and we literally had a small Main Street with small stores and a little department store and a Woolworth, and in the middle of these little businesses was a Benetton store. Even back then, I was a smart shopper and would get great deals on the clearance rack! I loved their pieces because they were so interchangeable with eachother and with other things I owned. So for someone like me they were perfect! I wondered what happened to that store and miss their product.

@MikeCee7 I worked as a nanny in Boston in the late '80's. The 12yo wore all Benneton. Nothing rebellious about the clothing or her. It was a status symbol for the upper middle class.
For some of us, we will always remember Benetton for giving Michael Schumacher his first two Formula 1 World Drivers' Championships before he moved to Ferrari. They were Red Bull Racing before Red Bull was a team - the flashy young team challenging the giants and eventually winning.
I still buy them. Bought two winter jackets in 2024. They are brilliant. I have a Benetton skirt that is 15 years old and looks like new. All good mid priced middle class brands are not doing that well. And its not that we cant afford Benetton. We can. It's not that expensive. It is that people don't want to buy decent clothing that lasts for a mid range price, it's either fast fashion or premium brands produced specifically for outlets. that this brand was a franchise explains a lot, I have seen the stores in malls in India a few years ago as well as the UK. I even remember seeing the Benetton Barbie dolls advertised.
I wore Benetton all through the 80’s. And 90’s. I remember wearing the striped sweater. At first the social campaign was fun, but then it was too much. I moved on to GAP and J Crew. I didn’t know it was still in business
In the 80's and 90's Benetton and Esprit were the peak of upper middleclass fashion. But IMHO, they failed to adapt the design of their clothes and their brand image to changing times. At first, they were outperformed by H&M, then came Zara and Primark and - according to my teenage kids, Bershka (a subsidiary of Zara) is nowadays the go-to brand for affordable teen fashion.
To this day, I still love this brand and shop there on trips to Italy although the quality of the textiles they use are not as great as it was way back then but the cut and fit of their clothes especially trousers and jeans remains unparalleled IMHO.
I worked in Benetton in Squirrel Hill, PA for several years. Their clothes were top quality, and I spent my whole paycheck there lol. What a wonderful brand. Miss it.
This brand is preferred by the "real middle-class". Back in the 90's, I usually bought my backpack here and it really lasts very long. It's also brightly colored making a real statement.
I think Benetton’s crazy colors divided society instead of uniting it. People walking down the street look like a colorful pile of junk each individual trying to show their own style.. I preferred the muted colors in the uniting of society. The society of the 20s 30s and 40s held the same values of family and the social structures that were so important for the family now it’s just a big heap a big mess a pajama slipper wearing society.
The sad fact is, the brands that overtook Benneton use the same thing : cheap labor in China, India, Pakistan, etc. I think that if garment mfg returns to the USA, AI might make it possible to buy clothing made in the USA.
I still have my Benetton coat from 2000. I had a few cherished pieces from Benneton and Sisley in the 90s. I would give a hypothetical arm for one of those colorful sweaters!
20+ yrs ago I saved up money and bought sweater for my little bro on bday. I was in college that time and it was way out of my budget. But that brand was getting popular in India. My bro did not like it so i grabbed it many years later to wear at home as it grew bigger ( after wash) and I am chubby . It was v stylish .Now I know Much about fashion and quality and I realize it was v good quality cotton sweater that because of not properly washing , hung loose but did not pill.
My favourite brand, someone save it please...In 2010's I bought a few pieces and still love them. The only place u find real wool, excellent quality and design.
I have loved this brand forever. I just bought my husband some Benetton shirts for Christmas. Happy to see the focus staying on quality pieces and not fast fashion
I bought 2 shirts from Benetton, in blue and pink.....after washing looks like they have missed their shape totally and very unmanageable for ironing😢.....Benetton was great in the 90's with beautiful bold colors, not anymore...😮. I miss Sisley and Esprit, sucha refreshing fashion time and good quality too! Zara and HM has a horrible quality! everything is polyester = plastic ATM, Uniqlo and Muji cover my needs for my basics
I still have a sweater my dad gave me in 1980. It was the most expensive article of clothing I’d ever received. I had no idea about their business model. Great video. New sub!
Interesting information. I had some beautiful Benetton wool sweaters in the late 1980's and early 1990's. I loved them, and then wool started to itch me and the sweaters were given away. 😢 Hope they can turn it around.
I’m still hoping for Benetton to survive and their vision of sustainability may be the best option. I still have sweaters that I bought as a teenager and they’re still as sparkly new (and I’m kinda old😅)
A couple months back, I went in their Barcelona location. It was a busy Saturday afternoon. Bershka, Primark, Pull and Bear, and all their other neighbors were busy. Except for them. I was the only one inside. It felt depressing even with all the colourful merchandise on show. I left immediately.
You don’t need to leave because there’s no one there. You should choose the fashion you like just because you like it not because the place looks busy.
I wondered what happened to them. I remember how edgy the advertising became and did wonder what was going on. I hope they survive because they brought a lot of energy with their clothes and imagery.
I own a wool dress I bought around 1992 and I still wear it today, the quality was superb and the style is still wearable a timeless piece. I just posted on my instagram a reel with the dress because I love it. Benetton was a great brand it had some classy styles not everything was bold and colorful
They lost me as a costumer in the 90ies when they started advertising their clothes with the man dying of AIDS . To me the argument of raising awareness for the disease or social grievances is sheer hypocrisy. Exploiting other peoples pain for the profit of a company is disgusting.
How was it exploitation when the family pictured gave its consent to use the image? Not sure of your age, but when that ad appeared in the early 90s, a major company bringing awareness to the AIDS crisis would have been like H&M doing a Free Palestine ad today. That ad expanded the discussion about HIV when most governments were ignoring it, and it is one of the reasons why it's no longer a taboo subject today.
Although yes it was a controversial campaign, it was above just marketing, it was ART. BTW, the family was supportive of the campaign and for good reason. In a world where the AIDS epidemic and suffering was hidden, they brought it in the public eye.
I didn't even notice it. I was never a Benneton go-to. It was always associated with high class consumers and people with a nose-on-the-air attitude. I liked some of their campaigns. Shame that like all of them, it was fake and all became about profit and human exploration.
REGARDLESS of their efforts I am not supporting a brand built on the d34ths of so many innocent people, india , Italy even the US... No they don't deserve my money!
In the 90s, Benetton offered quality, color, design, fun, comfortable and very representative clothes. But over time, that differentiation was lost, turning into boring collections.
I remember Benetton just as much for the advertising as much as the loud clothes. The advertising featuring David Kirby reminds me of religious paintings of Jesus after his death. Those paintings and statues are often named "Pietà" or "The Dead Christ."
In the late 90s, Benetton/Sisley/Esprit were my worshipped brands. Buying a piece felt like an experience of a lifetime.

Benetton's designs today are really good. People just like to wear what's trendy.
I dunno, I think some of Toscani's work had good intentions, but his Hubris soon dominated his motivations.
The quality is abysmal, garments start pilling from day 1. What a pity, their wool was impeccable years ago. Avoid at all costs
I got a jumper in sale last year..wore it twice, looks awful..if I hadn't paid £18 I would return for a refund...crap quality.
I used to love their merch.
Miss it.
That was a waste of your money. Hope you learned about poor choices.
@@Mr.SLovesTheSacredHeartofJesus I was like 19 so, yeah. Young kids do that stuff. 🙄
Yap, still have a huge production here in Bangladesh, China, Cambodia
I like their designs!! 😍😍😍
I saw some of their clothes still on sale in Europe only a few years ago. Still super expensive.
I bought a bunch of Benetton sweaters at a resale shop.
20+ yrs ago I saved up money and bought sweater for my little bro on bday. I was in college that time and it was way out of my budget. But that brand was getting popular in India. My bro did not like it so i grabbed it many years later to wear at home as it grew bigger ( after wash) and I am chubby . It was v stylish .Now I know
Much about fashion and quality and I realize it was v good quality cotton sweater that because of not properly washing , hung loose but did not pill.
Never understood this overpriced Gap. Hard pass.
I miss my Benetton perfume. It was great and perfect for every occasion. 😢
Clothes similar to Uniqlo today.
Zara and HM has a horrible quality! everything is polyester = plastic
ATM, Uniqlo and Muji cover my needs for my basics
Benetton is my lifestyle! I love the simplicity and the classic styles of clothing! ❤❤❤
I remember the colorful ads of United Colors of Benetton. They were glorious.
This one of my fav brand. Looking forward to have one again.
I thrifted a long camel colored dress coat that is United Colors of Bennetton. This is one of my most prized thrifted items.
I used to get sweaters from Benetton in the 90s. They were basic and classic and you could get them in all different colors
Lots of big words for a company who used controversy to advertise run of the mill clothing
I noticed the same when we were in Madrid last week.
Same thing with Athens when we were there in December of last year.
I used to have a simple blue sweater from Benetton. My favorite sweater ever.
This was such a great store. ❤❤❤❤
I really like your videos. Informative, well put-together, and great voice over
Thank you!🥰
They lost me as a costumer in the 90ies when they started advertising their clothes with the man dying of AIDS .
Love Benetton, will head to website and buy some pieces
REGARDLESS of their efforts I am not supporting a brand built on the d34ths of so many innocent people, india , Italy even the US... No they don't deserve my money!
Hardly any of the top brands are without innocent people suffering in the developing world.
I absolutely agree with you. Reading the comments on this video, proves most people are idiots.
There are still Benetton stores in Germany.
In Portugal as well and we also have Undercolors Of Benetton, their underwear shops in some shopping centers.
I was just wondering the other day about what happened to Benneton!
In the 90s, Benetton offered quality, color, design, fun, comfortable and very representative clothes. But over time, that differentiation was lost, turning into boring collections.
Bennetten Colors perfume was once a favorite of mine
I still have two sweaters.has lasted me an age.terrific quality and durability.
They have a chance if they move to quality substainable clothing. There is a group that doesn't want fast fashion but quality fashions.
I remember Benetton just as much for the advertising as much as the loud clothes.
The advertising featuring David Kirby reminds me of religious paintings of Jesus after his death. Those paintings and statues are often named "Pietà" or "The Dead Christ."
