@@RJRonquillo I'm not even kidding Bro, I'm not a novice, been playing decades and in the You Tube revolution I watch many many great players, Pete Thorn, Tim Pierce etc for new tips to improve my playing and this is by far the best and easiest to follow method I've ever seen anyone teach. Nobody needs any more than this. If they follow your instruction in this video there is literally very little else anyone needs to be able to develop killer soloing and over any chord changes. Been on your channel since you had less than 20k subscribers. I'm in Sydney Australia BTW. Love your work. Michael

This not only gave me instruction on what’s next and answered my questions I’ve been thinking about for years but gave examples of how to pass these hurdles, and RJ made it easy to understand and think about so that I can practice this and continue moving forward!
I couldn't agree more!! - So many useful and also easy to follow steps/principles... - I wish I had just only THIS info and 45 minutes lesson 30+ years ago..., I think that would have opened up the mystery of playing across the neck so easily...; R.J. is one of the few really outstanding teachers here...; I like when he mentiones he lets his ear guiding him more than the actual shape... - it's what I have leaned to a lot... - and while it takes probably much time, leading to a lot of wrong notes :-D - I think it helps developing th ear and melodic feeling. Lol regular ass clean setting to me. Not saying it’s not good but not really special in any way. Almost any guitar is capable of this you can hear the feel from his fretting hand quite well. Just good playing. 👌🏿

Increasing the level step-by-step is a great way to approach this and works for my brain.
I really like your playing and personality, been playing it for 25 years, various versions Clapton srv and Hendrix versions, then the various live versions. Thats all we had to go by in 90s. I love ppl like you giving a new generation the keys to the sports car and teaching them how to race it.

Its been 2 years since first seeing this video. Ive come along way and its 100% because of this video. This was the video that made everything snap in my head.
I’m working at it . New but watching you all day . Getting the cob webs off my fingers and brain . I like you , always had a deep admiration and respect for Hendrix before I move on to the next world . ( hopefully not soon ) I’m 65 in January and this is on my bucket list . I just restarted back in January after a long hiatus from playing and music out and no guitar at home either . It’s like I’ve been in a coma and just came out of it. The technology and products has been overwhelming and refreshing; I have purchased some online lessons with a few different players to get my feet wet again . I have a university professor and full time psychotherapist. I wanted to thank you for your channel . I have watched many of your videos all day . My health is relatively good and I’m taking a break from teaching to re-evaluate my life and future . I was extremely impressed by your channel . Teaching style and sincerity . The strings you taught me with then Hendrix video amazed me . The video with the clip of your Hendrix tribute in high-school. I like your teaching style and checked out your site. This is the first channel I’ve found that has described how to switch modes with each chord progression, where it actually makes sense. AWESOME job teaching.

This lesson literally encompasses almost all of my playing techniques. If he does just a few (sloppy) taps at the end, I may have an existential crisis. Literally all my improv playing over or along with tracks is basically this. Rip some min. pentatonics, followed by some arpeggio picking over the appropriate chordshape. I'll never be a smooth sweep-picker or anything, but its a good idea to learn these techniques to build up different 'comfort zones' all over the neck and learn how to incorporate them with the chord changes of the rhythm section.
One of the best feelings as a player with aspirations to shred is when you first realize you can improv jam along with a Jimi/SRV tune and just by your knowledge of the song's progression, you can play harmonious lead lines seemingly effortlessly from muscle memory and the innate knowledge base you've built up in your head over time, learning the instrument and his style. Feels good man.

Thanks RJ for an excellent and comprehensive summary of how to solo with scales and arpeggios. Frankly, one of the BEST I've seen on the net. This is a video I can keep coming back to as my skills progress. I really like that you overlay the chord and scale in the upper left hand corner. Good "training wheels" to have as I explore what works over the chord. Great song choice as well since it includes the first six chords of the G major scale, a passing chord and an non-scale chord to boot. PS Bonus points for the matching guitar and strap. I see what you did there... ;-)
As an instructor (in an unrelated field), this technique is how most other new concepts are taught. I'm glad to see this teaching technique used for guitar playing. Great job RJ!

That was the best RUclips lesson I've ever seen. I've been trying to learn Little Wing on and off for about fifteen years! I've really struggled with repetitive solo's. Absolute gold standard for a lesson man! I've taken in person lessons and bought online courses that haven't had half the applicable knowledge you managed to fit into a 20 minute video. Love the way you highlight both the chord being played in the progression and the scale used to solo over it.

I concur with Smoking Gun (and I'll assume others), and I rarely post any comments on YT. I've been trying to take more measured steps to really focus on playing the right scales and modes over the correct chords, and this lesson really gave me a great framework to tackle several chords in one song, that obviously reoccur all over blues and rock. That's an absolutely fabulous lesson. Some of the less musical steps (eg sticking to triads, then arpeggios in the same position) are amazingly useful exercises.
One of the upsides of the present lockdown is that I am practicing guitar properly for the first time in 20+ years, and I've found a new love for studying guitar stuff. Based on your lesson I've decided to take 2 songs with interesting chord structures (Little Wing and Here,There, Everywhere perhaps) and spend the next 6 months trying the same steps you outlined over each of them.

Best guitar lesson i've ever had, although i know what you've said, but this can be a great practice routine over any progression from level 1 to level 4. I am always think about level 4, but level 1,2,3 are as much important to level 4. Thanks a bunch man, it worth millions.

I 100% agree Andrew! I'm just starting to get into soloing with minor penta and major scales together or practicing minor penta over chord changes and this video is excellent. It feels great to be able to understand what Ron is saying, even if I can't quite play the level 3 and 4 stuff yet, I can grasp the concepts and its really fun trying not to make your 1st position penta sound like a scale, lol. It's so hard right now, but its getting better! Also, he's right...playing over little wing progression is so damn fun.

That was a great lesson RJ. What I found interesting was that Level 1 could sound as good as Level 4. I am overwhelmed with Level 4 now and it was kind of a relief to realize that. Love that shirt by the way!

@@dreyn7780 Your comment doesn't even make sense. It wasn't about being close or to play like Jimi Hendrix note for note. R.J. addressed that in the beginning of the video. Did you even watch it? It was about four concepts of phrasing over the Little Wing chord changes and being conscious of the techniques used of phrasing over the changes. If you have an issue with it not being close or up to some standard in your mind reply or comment to RJ not me I didn't play or record the video.
Thanks for this amazing lesson! It's one of those rare "24mins of lesson, 12 months of pratice" moments. I've restarted guitar after a 10year pause, and I'm currently struggling at level 1 to have melodic solos. It's nice to see the road ahead !
Unfortunately, I am just now seeing your lesson videos for the first time since you moved on from T2. This particular lesson was a higher level of quality than many of the ones on YT by other players. And by "higher quality" I do mean an overall improved feeling experience. It was clearly not an absolute beginner's lesson, yet it was obtainable by most of us who are still learning to actually apply some of the basics (and then some). Great lesson. Great pace. Great personality. I hope that your life is well adjusted and going well at home since your decision to come off the road. You have certainly earned my respect and attention times over. That one time RUclips recommends was spot on! New sub! Really informative lesson to help me soloing in general. These 4 steps way of teaching is awesome, gives me a natural progression in practicing :) How can I practice level 3.2 of staying in the same position for all chords?
Thanks for the sub! To practice the one position, pick a position and go through all the pentatonic scales of the song, in that position (Em, Am, Bm, Dm) . An easy starting place would be 12th fret position.

Fantastic lesson! I’d say the best sounding was level 1 though :) it’s incredibly hard not to sound cheesy playing nothing but triads / arpeggios over chord changes, especially in non-jazz context. I find the most satisfying approach (to my ear) is stick to a scale (either modal or pentatonic or both) in the key, then use very small bits of a triad (or even just a single not e or double stop from the triad) to emphasize a chord here and there, especially if that chord is outside the key (like F). But even when the Em first goes to G, because G is so harmonically similar to Em, it sounds awesome when you briefly take a break from Em pentatonic and hit the 1st and the 3rd from the G maj triad.
