Little Wing is probably the tune that showed that guitar can be a standalone instrument for Electric Guitar, and sound like a one man band. Hendrix truly is the greatest!
@Bickley Jonas I mean more as Electric Guitar. Acoustic and classical guitar are forms of guitar that can already standalone. Electric Guitar is something more considered for Rock as rhythm or lead work, not as something you play by yourself mostly. Of course that's not the case anymore because of tunes like Little Wing.
Little Wing isn't played with just a guitar. The guitar is the centerpiece of course, but it wouldn't sound the same at all without the drums and bass.
Jazzing up Little Wing: change up the rhythm accents a little bit so it swings more, like Up From The Skies. Throw in some some octaves and double stops into the single note soloing. Play the melody in octaves, all the way through. Simple, but enough harmonic texture to add some jazz flavor to the song. And use your EAR. This song has a MELODY.

Always loved the original. Stevie Ray Vaughan really made Little Wing his own, his version never fails to make the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I have constructive criticism for you Tyler. First off, great video, and I’ve actually subscribed to guitar super system. My advice is to redo the jazz analysis of Little Wing, redoing level 8. The heart of jazz, like all music is tension and resolution, not the most complicated chords possible. It just so happens that jazz will often use more dissonant chords than other genres do to achieve that balance of tension and resolution. Your rendition to me was all tension. If you spend time composing something with tighter lines and smoother transitions, I think you could write something very beautiful. Especially for someone of your skill level. I doubt you’ll see this. But I also wanted to state it as a defense against the people hating on jazz in this comment section, using your level 8 example as support.
I've got questions on levels 7 and 8. On level 7: Are we allowed to mix the pentatonic scale shapes in almost one position (the root changes of course) in order to play a solo and try not to sound like that we are changing them with following the patterns you showed? And on level 8: Do you mean that we can sound a little bit avant garde (free) if we still follow some of the rules?
Great explanation and modeling of music theory which as a guitar composer I personally really love so nice instruction by starting with bass notes to establish the key. Such great tone on the melody when in a high octave and I love the tips of adding in 9th chords, diminished, and inversions which sound pretty and make a very unique sound. Very inspiring and nicely encouraging to apply such Jazz elements. Cheers!

I feel like you controlled the intensity of muting throughout which is great. It's all those techniques added together that makes a true good sound. No audio editing needed with technique like that.
For me, Triads are everything. That was a major breakthrough for me for scales, chord progression soloing fret board memory hand placement, basically everything.
I never realized there was a C between Amin en Gadd9! Allthough C is kinda A minorish anyway. Have been playing this soooo long, been stuck in level 5 or 6 I think. I really like your playing, but the level 8 was a bit too out for my taste. I think this is a standard for sure, jimi showed us the chords and the idea and left the road open for us
@@positivecommentman9037 Well, in the video Tyler talks about making the listener hear the chords, not the complex harmony snob. Listener also means people who don't know theory.
@@tioalexandru Depends who you're playing for. Those with advanced knowledge of harmony or the lowest common denominator? Of course that's why jazz is not popular at least not since the swing era.
@@positivecommentman9037 lmao, fuck enjoying music cause its "complex" i want to just sit back and listen. not create a spreadsheet trying to understand it. And yeah it did sound like ass, complex or not
I seem to be alone here. I thought level 8 was phenomenal- with the exception of the whole tone scale bit. Works in some places, but this was not one of them - it took me right out of the song.
If you want to hear the most dissonant version of Little Wing ever go listen to Eric Gales do it. It's literally almost unrecognizable and Eric is a PHENOM of a player but when people get TOO far out in left field with Little Wing I'm not a big fan of that either.
Whole tone scale has too many outside notes to use it over the tonic or root chord. That tension would have been better served over the descending B to A minor or even the D major at the end. Trying to reharmonize such a classic is difficult to do without upsetting the purists, but it can be done tastefully of you know where the tension chords are.
Very interesting !! And yeah, these applying these concepts to any song would be a ton of fun. I'm not I'll get there very soon, but still it would be fun. Thanks for posting this lesson.

This was so incredibly helpful. PLEASE keep them coming!
8 levels of toan, ok?
No butterscotch = no toan

Butterscotch Hotwife ok?

I need to learn this song and this is just what I needed. Way over my head mostly but puffing and wheezing I'll run to the end.
Level 9: Little Wing, but it's actually Despacito.

My favorite was Level 6 and it wasn't just because of the way you said six. Haha. It was the best in my opinion. Loved palm muting in it. I feel like you controlled the intensity of muting throughout which is great. It's all those techniques added together that makes a true good sound. No audio editing needed with technique like that.
Level 10: Chicken Wing
For me, Triads are everything. That was a major breakthrough for me for scales, chord progression soloing fret board memory hand placement, basically everything.
I never realized there was a C between Amin en Gadd9! Allthough C is kinda A minorish anyway. Have been playing this soooo long, been stuck in level 5 or 6 I think. I really like your playing, but the level 8 was a bit too out for my taste. I think this is a standard for sure, jimi showed us the chords and the idea and left the road open for us
That was just amazing! Don't think I'll ever get the intro quite wright, but this showed me some things I will try out! Thanks a lot!
Good video, level 7 and 8 sounded like ass though, just being honest
Agreed, hell I thought level 6 was worse than level 5.
Someone doesn’t have any understanding of complex harmony then ;)
@@positivecommentman9037 Well, in the video Tyler talks about making the listener hear the chords, not the complex harmony snob.
And yeah it did sound like ass, complex or not
That tone is so warm feeling, i love it
I seem to be alone here.
Ah, the ears and the brain are so subjective. I loved the short insertion of the whole tone scale. it was a nice little surprise from Tyler.
I think that a very short insertion of level 8 would be nice in this song but if left there for just a moment too long it takes you out of the song
I did in fact read that. I had my suspicions; however I was a little uncertain.
Thank you! And right back at ya handsome. ❤
Should have been 6 levels of Little Wing, because 7 and 8 don’t sound like Little Wing
Get you ears checked mate 😯
@@rickturner210 no. Hes right. I mean 7 I guess does but it's not a great rendition and 8 is just wankery.
I have to say, you may be goofy at times. It's always positive and drama free which is a great influence to others. Plus your a pats fan 👍

Lovely video as always thanks so much Ty!! Your videos always encourage me to push boundaries and look for other ways to play a song. UR the best
“Little wing is the best chord progressions ever written”
*Sad stairway noises*
Stairway is the best progression ever stolen ;)
Spittin facts only 1:14 minutes in. I like this video. Great as always Tyler
I always felt that song should have been longer...
The SRV cover is almost 7 minutes long and is a blues masterpiece
brother, can you give a quick run down on gear setup you are using to achieve that lock down tone?
Level 9 would be to sweep pick through the progression (☉д⊙)

Many Thanks for breaking it down like this. I really appreciate your advice and style. Soooooo Cool.
I thoroughly enjoyed this, but damn that’s some horrendous tone
Agree. I didn’t know a Silver Sky could sound so bad.
Very interesting !! And yeah, these applying these concepts to any song would be a ton of fun. I'm not I'll get there very soon, but still it would be fun. Thanks for posting this lesson.
Little Wing is absolutely wonderful. No cover or tribute comes close to the original.
