Imo very few musical composition were capable to portrait the spirit of an epoch as vase brillante does, at least to me. It really evokes vibes of the aristocracy of those times, the walking thru those majestic galleries covered of marble and paintings, the afternoon games in colorful garden, the chatters of the courtiers in front of a tea and of course, the absolute beauty of those adolescent girls waiting to be asked to dance a valse during a grand ball. I think there are not really words capable of describing the sensibility, depth of emotions and musical genius of Chopin, it bring me to tears oftentimes still, like i've never heard his music before.
Trifonov came out in third as he deserved. It most matters the final stage in judging the prizes, and not the previous ones, such as this. His performance in the final stage was not as good as Ingolf Wunder and whoever got 1st (i forgot her name). They were also great pianists who played the concerto a lot better.

Given his overall proficiency, I'm surprised by his troubles with the repeated notes (not in the second theme, but at the very beginning, and similar passages). Maybe not accustomed to the action of the piano?
Very possible. The fazioli grands do seem to have a very different action to the more usual steinways (or even bosendorfers). Still a very well rounded performance overall.
Lang langs Interpretation is from an ohther Planet compare to this... So much more colorful...nicer rubato and touch... Of course trifonovs is also brilliant..

No matter how much musicality one puts into a performance, harshness of tone and authenticity of style makes or breaks a good performance from an outstanding performance. As a conservatory student, this is what distinguishes talented students, and unfortunately a lot of this is dependent on the teacher as well.
The fact that he's playing a Fazioli doesn't have to do with the sound that he produces? I have to admit this piano sounds a little off compared to a Steinway or even a Yamaha 🤔
