    When you travel with another person (partner, spouse, BF), it's a good idea to put one complete outfit in the other person's suitcase. If one bag doesn't make it to the final destination, you'll have emergency clothing.

    All of these are great tips! A few tips I can contribute:
    *1.* Always keep a small pen in your carry-on bag. It seems like there is never a pen available when you have to fill out customs cards
    *2.* You know those plastic store bags that are _everywhere_ ? Pack a few! They take up very little space and can come in handy when dealing with dirty or wet items.

    I like to roll whole outfits into each other!! So socks, underwear, leggings, and a shirt. That way you don't have to go through your suitcase looking for something that matches/is missing.

    Great tips! My add on's:
    1] Zip-lock bags are great for items like lotion/shampoo, etc. They also come in different sizes to pack different items - smaller bags for jewellery, bigger bags for clothes if you don't have packing cubes.
    2] A shawl is as multipurpose as a sarong, especially to keep you warm on the plane - like to cover my knees during those long,cold flights.
    3] If you ever get a free toiletry bag on the plane keep it! The bag can be used to keep other small items, the eye mask is usually washable so you don't have to buy one, the little toothbrush and tooth paste is ideal for freshening up at the airport, and the socks are good for added warmth or as "airplane slippers" or cut off the toe ends to act as knee guards.
    4] If you stayed at a hotel that provided those little bottles of lotion,shampoo/soap,etc (most do) keep it for your next flight/trip - its under 100 ml and ideal for your carry on. The soap/shower gel can also be used to wash clothes, or add sugar to it to use as an exfoliator.
    5] Use your department store bags or even the clear plastic ones you get for free from the fresh produce/fruit and veg section - for dirty laundry, shoes, etc.
    6] Take some basic medications for common ailments that work on you -- like tylenol for pain/fever, ibuprofen/brufen for migraines/anti-inflammatory, allergex for an anti-histamine &/or sinus medication, immodium for diarrhoea, buscopan/scopex for stomach cramps, little bottles of saline for cleaning wounds or as eye drops, anti-septic ointment, a muscle ointment/healing balm like voltaren/deep heat. I know it sounds like a neurotic, pharmacy junkie but it always helps when you don't have to visit a pricey pharmacy/doctor when travelling - just put it in 10-15cm Zip-lock and you are all good.
    7] Those buffs made famous by "Survivor" are also pretty handy - face mask, head band, neck cover, head cover, wrist band for electronics, etc.
    8] I don't know if many of you are familiar with the often expensive bag wrapping at the airports to protect your checked-in luggage - a good alternative is to buy thick cling film wherever you are and do it yourself before you leave for the airport.
    9] I suggest having a little sling bag to fit your passport and/or your phone, so it's near at hand at the airport. Ladies could get a durable, medium to small sized, multi-zip one (about the size of an iPad) for use during the whole trip.
    10] Keep a large plastic/material shopping bag folded away - to carry your jackets/shoes,etc.
    11] Hand sanitizer and wet wipes are great for freshening up, general cleaning and unexpected stains. Yo can often get baby wet wipes for much cheaper and little travel/sample packs are often given for free. "Sensitive" baby wipes can be used on the face and to remove make -up.
    12] Pack a few emergency munchies and candies - again, in the small zip-lock.

      If travelling with medications, take a doc letter explaining why you need them. Also carry current scripts. Check country of destination for rules eg. paracetamol is illegal in Japan. So is “the pill”

  • @Lauren_aida

    If you're going to be traveling around a super humid place where you have to worry about your bag/clothes molding, bring a spray bottle filled with vinegar - it kills the mold, and while your stuff might smell like vinegar, it's much better than the smell of mold. I use this while doing fieldwork in tropical rainforests where nothing every fully dries. This year, I'm going back to Ecuador for a few months and then I'll be heading to Indonesia and then Laos, both for the first time!

    • @brooke1692

      That's awesome! It's good to have just in case if you're going to be in the oriente for a few days or more, but if you're just visiting the Amazon for a day or two and then going right back to the sierra or the coast then everything will dry out there. Have a great time!!

    • @hopscotchtheglobe

      i wanted to do the same thing, bring my empty bottle to my carry on backpack but i was afraid that they will throw it away because it's 700ml bottle :< so i ended up packing it in my registered suitcase. Do you think there would be a problem if i would take 700ml bottle in a carry on?

    • @heatheracheson2808
      @heatheracheson2808 6 лет назад +18

      Ori Gotchi as long as when you pass through security the bottle is empty, you will be fine. They don't care about the physical bottle - they care about what's in the bottle. So if it's empty they won't care ;)

    Love how you get right to the tips and don’t waste time with gobbledygook talk. I suggest taking in the carryon a dark colored bandana or cotton scarf to fold and use as a sleep mask for long flights or in case the roomates like to stay up late and the glow from their electronics would disturb your ZZZZZZ’s. Don’t know how much an actual sleep mask costs but Bandanas are cheap - like a dollar or less so you could buy several and pack some in your checked bag and keep one with you in your carry-on.

  • @salui
    @salui 5 лет назад +19

    1. Instead of a power bar, I recommend getting one adapter that also offers multiple USB outlets. Most of my electronics don't demand the regular plug nowadays, so saves space and are inexpensive on Amazon
    2. I have sensitive skin and a fast drying towel is AMAZING vs the towels at hostels and hotels
    3. I love shower caps for wet items (shampoo, conditioner)
    4. I get free samples of tide at Costco for washing clothes
    5. Foldable reusable grocery bags for shopping/groceries - or foldable anything
    6. Old contact lens cases for creams

    Great tips, Kristin! I totally agree about travel cubes and rolling your clothes. Some of my tips: my carryon is a Travelon antitheft classic messenger bag. My iPad and Kindle both fit in it and I charge them before I leave and at every airport. No paper books! I wear a golf skort and golf shirt underneath sweats when going on a winter sun holiday, then just peel off a layer on the plane. I wear loafers to avoid having to unlace shoes at security. I always bring a string bag. Weighs about 20g and is invaluable for unexpected shopping. I also bring a couple of Ziplok bags for wet swimsuits, etc. I bring minimal jewellery and put it in a Ziplok bag in my Travelon bag. I don’t wear any jewellery going through security. I put my business card inside my check in suitcase (if I need to check my luggage) in case it gets lost.

    • @mattiec971
      @mattiec971 6 лет назад +2

      I love the business card idea! A luggage tag should work but it's a good extra measure

  • @RymVri108
    @RymVri108 6 лет назад +57

    I pack a single makeup look that I can do with just one palette and a single jewelry set that is minimal but goes with everything. Usually 2 layered necklaces (wear each alone or both together) and some stud earrings. I always end up getting jewelry when I travel, so I don’t want to bring much. I also pack clothes that are all in the same color family, so everything goes together. For me, it’s usually neutrals- blacks, grays, and olives, with one thing that is more fun.

    Not sure if this is a hack, but I ONLY travel with a hard surface suitcase. I worked with a guy that used to load luggage on/off planes. He told me that after they transported fish from Alaska it would leave a lot of liquid on the bottom of the plane. They would use soft, fabric suitcases/dufflebags to "soak up" the fish juice. I literally screamed out in my office when he told me this.

    I’m planning my packing for Bangkok this June!!!
    One tip I have is to plan ahead early what you’ll want to wear, and try on the outfits to be sure they work. If you don’t love it, don’t bring it!
    I don’t have a shower cap, but I’ll use those plastic produce bags to keep my shoes covered. I’ve used the Sephora sample hack for my foundation every time! I never end up using it all, and it takes up so little space in my carry on liquids bag...

    Great vid, and to the point!
    I just got back from the Philippines and have a month in Italy coming up in June.
    My hacks are 1: bring tea tree oil, has so many uses (bed bug repellent, good for skin, stops oily build up in hair)
    2: if you wont use it more than once dont bring it.
    Annnnnd if you are leaving pets with family or friend sleep on a blanket and leave it with your dog to ease their time apart.

      I always bring a sleeping bag liner (you can make one, a Q size sheet folded in half and sewn across the bottom (short side) and a third of the way up the long side) This way I'm always sleeping in my own bed and a hard shake out keeps "pets" at bay. (also, luggage in the bathtub, but that's a whole other thing)

    The hacks were super helpful. I'm going to have to re-watch and take notes. I'm going to India in February for 3 weeks. I stumbled on your video while shopping for compression packing cubes. I'm using mostly regular packing cubes. I don't want to over pack. But I have to bring a winter coat and it takes up an inordinate amount of space. So, I would suggest including compression packs as another option.

    In 2018 I lived out of a backpack for a year traveling all over Asia and Africa. I’ll echo the sarong and packing cubes! I also used lavender, peppermint, and tester essential oils, a power strip with USB, a travel sheet, a pouch to hold important papers and passport, external hard drive, A solid pair of flip flops, and my nano puff Patagonia jacket- which was essential on air plains. I stole a travel blanket from an airplane that I loved. Oh and a thermometer was soooo important since I was in dengue and malaria areas constantly

    My tip: simple cotton jersey minidresses/tunics with sleeves. They are so soft and comfy and come in a wide variety of prints, or plains. They don’t crease or need ironing. They can be worn alone or with jeans or leggings. They can be layered with a T-shirt underneath or a cardigan or jumper over. They are warm if it’s cold and cool if it’s hot. They double as nightdresses. They can look smart/casual, suitable for beach or city. Not expensive.

    Awesome! Thank you very much! Thiese tips are sparkling with their practicism! Putting heavy items at the bottom - my favourite!
    A few hints for rare travellers. First, I always wrap my luggage cases with a transparent film for keeping the case clean between the trips. So instead of cleaning out the 6-month dust you just cut off the film cover and ready to load your case the next second already. And of course film it during the flight trips.
    Second, I am always making a list of things to take. Sometimes collecting items in this list takes weeks - you have a thought about something - you add the item to the list and carry on.At the end of the day I won't leave anything behind during packing before the flight. Especially something charging next to my bed.
    Third, never surrender the luggage you are not ready to lose. Put things in your carry-on case instead and try to travel with minimum of things.

    I often house sit for my aunt and uncle while they travel and I once got frustrated with the lack of outlets at her house and started bringing an extension cord with 3 outlets on it---LIFE CHANGING. I haven't gone on a trip without my 5ft extension cord since. It's come in super handy and has resulted in very impressed travel companions who consistently end up needing to use it. $2-4 at Home Depot, worth so much more.
    For my next big trip I'll be going to Beinspora---a wizard LARP at a castle in Missouri. It sounded so ridiculous I had to go for it!

    I️ love the idea of using a straw to keep necklaces untangled! I’m definitely going to use that for my next trip. One thing I️ always do is pack a plastic trash bag- it’s good for wet items or to keep your dirty clothes separate from the clean ones. It’s especially helpful when camping.

  • @Jete59
    @Jete59 2 года назад

    I just learned the necklace in the straw hack and put all of mine in them in a tray and now wear different jewelry everyday. I also use pill boxes for earring but thought that was my own little secrets.
    Cute video I enjoyed it thanks

    Also never wrap cables palm-to-elbow. The wiring inside the insulation is twisted tightly, and forcing the cable into a certain shape will break the insides. Gently wrap it loosely as it hangs in the air as the cable naturally goes, you'll end up with a slightly less neat loop but it'll last longer :)

  • @caitlinarntz4839

    I put qtips in orange prescription bottles, bobby pins and nail clippers as well, to keep them organized. GoTubb makes these little pill containers that click shut and can also hold jewelry. I use them for face wash and face moisturizer, so I don't have to bring the entire bottle of my preferred items. Plastic grocery bags are always good to have on hand and if i'm packing hiking boots I stuff them with socks or fragile items wrapped in socks.

      Hi The Wander Life. I agree packing cubes are fabulous tools to keep you organised. My favs are the lightweight compression cubes to tame your gear😀. Sounds like you are using packing cubes to pack tight rather than light, lol? Try slowly cutting down to see how you enjoy carrying less. I weight everything (OCD?) to take the emotion out when deciding what to cull if I've packed too enthusiastically! Happy & Safe Travels.

      @ GUSTAVO TheCat Who in their right mind would put something fragile or valuable in checked baggage? Carry on! If its oversize, the airline can make provisions, (at a additional cost of course) for carry on of things like musical instruments, sports equipment, and of course a medical device. What headphones do you have that won't fit in a carry on bag? Mine fit in my jacket pocket.

    Awesome hacks! Have used most of them and yes packing cubes are bomb! For the ladies I suggest quick drying panties so you can wash & dry them on your trip. Every ounce of space counts! Also, I pack fabric softeners to keep my clothes smelling fresh and to pat my hair & body for added freshness. It absorbed smells (like cigarette smoke) real nicely.

      You shouldn't need a convertor/adapter for mobile devices. Just make sure you have the right charger cables for your devices on hand when you travel, then buy a generic charger at your destination. Those will match the plugs and voltage of your destination by default. If you are in Asia, they will be cheap.

    I try my outfits and take photos so when I'm in the destination, I'll just swipe my gallery to decide which one to wear for the next day. Also, if the weather permits, my go-to outfit is dress and shorts with pockets + comfortable walking shoes. For 7 days, i just brought with me 7 light weight dresses, ONE pair of shorts that I wear under the dress for storage purposes lol and 1 set of pajamas. If you are a frequent traveller, you can invest on those quick drying undergarments (bra, undies, socks). Bring few pairs and you can wash/hang overnight. Dont forget to bring/buy detergent.

    Europe. 5 days in Rome before boarding our ship for a 10 day cruise. The fun part of packing is having to pack for embarkation day. Having to have a bag of essentials with you till your bags get to your stateroom. But We need to pack for staying in the hotel before our cruise.
    So what I am doing is using my plastic over the door shoe organizer to hold all of my toiletries so I can see what I need. Having clothes for formal night and regular dresses for dinners. So packing for a cruise is a bit different but I love cruising.
