  • You'd think a comic about an alien cyborg woman trying to nuke Saturn's moon while a cosmic surfer, an armored war machine, and a man wielding norse weaponry try to stop her would be far less dull than this is.

    RUMINATIONS: A milestone episode, indeed. This features the premiere of the Atop the Fourth Wall "Gunslinger" theme, as it was called, and title cards by Masterthecreater (now MTC-Studios). In regards to the title cards, it was mostly a matter of providence that it happened. Said artist, Al, sent me a message on TGWTG out of the blue asking if I was interested in having a title card artist like how the Nostalgia Critic had a title card artist. He included a link to his DeviantArt gallery and I gave him a shot for a title card and he did the one included in this episode. From there, I decided to incorporate the title cards into the episodes directly by having them right after the theme song, and we go from there. Originally, he worked for free but as the need arose he requested to be paid and I was making enough money to afford it and we've worked together ever since, with him even making the Longbox of the Damned logo AND the Atop the Fourth Wall DVD cover. Interestingly enough, shortly after I made Al my title card artist, Chad Rocco (AKA CR from the site) requested to become my title card artist, but I had to turn him down. Still, I liked his artwork enough that I asked him to do the artwork on my webcomic Lightbringer for a time. He had the patience to put up with me during that time when I would deliver scripts late or he'd come up with creative filler art, but eventually he devoted his time to his actual show that thankfully ended up on TGWTG.
    The theme song was a result of a contest and my own desire to see the show become a bit more professional. Well, as professional as you can be when you're a show on the internet reviewing awful comic books, anyway. After all, the biggest reviewer out there, the Angry Video Game Nerd, had a theme song, so why not me? The Nerd had the benefit of being friends with Kyle Justin, who wrote and performed his theme song, but I had no such help, unfortunately. As a result, I instead turned it over to the internet and asked them to write the theme song. There were actually quite a few entries, many of whom I decided to spotlight in the end credits for the next several episodes. I went with the Gunslinger theme mostly because it was catchy. It was a very aggressive earworm, staying with you long after you had first heard it, which is what you want to have if you want your show to be memorable to people. Some people have said they prefer this version of the song to later versions, which were more cleaned-up and polished. They like the rougher, more raw feel that the original had. I can understand that, but I prefer the version I use now, myself, pretty much BECAUSE I prefer it cleaner and more well-put together.
    Phelous' appearance in the Previously-On segment was mainly done because I felt bad that he was left out of the Brawl. He had been just past the cut-off for reviewers who were going, despite joining at the same time as Ed Glaser and me. As such, I wanted to give him more exposure, especially since his reviews were really growing on me. In addition, I didn't want to have another cameo-filled Previously-On segment so soon after the last one, especially since it might distract from the theme song premiere, so this worked out especially well.

    It was nice of you to give Phelous some exposure and I'm glad you, him and alison are all still good friends. Even though I watch both their reviews a lot, I still miss them. They were a lot of fun when they were a part of the site. (Sigh) Just makes me sad remembering how at one point you were all at least friendly with each other before things started falling apart. I don't know, broken friendships always make me feel sad.

    I've seen this review a few times, but this is the first time I'm noticed that the comic's writer is Ron Marz, a writer who is far less infamous than he probably should be, since he's the guy responsible for writing the infamous comic where Alexandra DeWitt - Kyle Rayner's girlfriend - is brutally murdered and stuffed in a fridge for Kyle to find.

      Ron Marz also wrote the story Emerald Twilight. That's a story that's only 3 issues long and has Hal Jordan go from the greatest green lantern ever, to the guy that single handedly destroyed the entire corps, kill almost all the Guardians of the Universe, obliterated the central power battery, and became Parallax.

    I just went back to this and the next 8 or 9 episodes to re-listen to the runner-up AT4W theme song candidates in their ending credits, because I remembered liking several of them; it'd be kind of nice if they were occasionally used in the end credits of new episodes. The one on this episode in particular I think is my favorite, and I think I might actually like it slightly better than the one that became the official theme (especially in the latter's rough, original version; although I'm not denying that Vincent E.L.'s theme is still a pretty great song).
    Edit: And a few days later I realized that Linkara actually DID change the ending theme to feature one of these runner-ups instead of an instrumental of the Gunslinger theme, starting from "The Thing from Another World #2" without any acknowledgement or explanation. I'm happy about that, and reasonably happy about that choice (that runner-up was probably my second-favorite after the one from this episode), although I am curious about why the change suddenly happened so long after this point and without any clear impetus, and slightly disappointed that we haven't seen any cameos from any of the other runner-up theme song entries (at least, none that I've seen).

    This is the kind of crappy art (especially on the coloring front) that a lot of Marvel's second-string comics (including all the licensed stuff like Transformers, G.I. Joe, and He-Man) were saddled with.

    I strangely like Thunderstrike’s personality. Whereas Thor is proud, bombastic, and a smidgeon egotistical, Thunderstrike is more reserved, a tad easily frightened, and it’s clear he hasn’t thought this hero thing all the way through. That said, he still takes the job with both feet forward to save the day. Too bad most of the comics he was in kinda sucked. As a character he’s great.

    • @1manorgy
      @1manorgy 8 лет назад +1

      not really. you'll probably suffer from ruptured eardrums, collapsed lungs, temporary blindness, soiled underwear, various circulatory problems, a nasty nosebleed and possibly PTSD but you might actually live if someone reels you back out of the vacuum within a few seconds, and also you don't die of shock.
      or at least, that was the diagnosis the last time I checked. it's not exactly the most extensively researched phenomenon.
      comparing that with exploding, I'd say it's still better. death is so... final.
