I think people forget how huge the Spice Girls were. In 4 years they sold 65 million copies and is the only female UK band to go multi platinum in the US.

No one forgets. It's just that they were kind of a 'flash in the pan" they lost their luster very quickly. I was middle school, aged when it was cool to make fun of them.
Of course, making fun of "girly" things has always been cool. I'm so glad I grew out of that.
