Detroit Diesel injectors, cam rollers and oil pump pressure regulator

- In this video Adrian cleans up the camshaft / pushrod rollers and shows me how to install and adjust them. After that we replace the regulator springs in the oil pump to bring the oil pressure back up. Low oil pressure in a Detroit Diesel can be caused by these springs getting too weak and releasing oil pressure early. We also found a second-hand deep-belly sump pan so we have started measuing things up to modify the oil pump pickup. The deep oil pan is important to have in a boat due to the angle the engine sits on (9 degrees) and the rolling of the boat at sea.
After than Adrian shows us all the parts of a Detroit Diesel unit injector and how they work. He then pressure tests and test fires a complete injector using the factory tool and tests an injector tip using a tool he made himself from the ejector seat handle from a Harrier Jump Jet. Gotta love this guy. :)
We also press new little end bearings into the conrods and send them off to be machined to match the gudgeon / wrist pin.
Finally we clean up an old emergency shutoff flap that I was given my a friend Andrew and get it ready to go on the boat.
Lots of other little jobs happen this week too such as brazing a much more compact raw water pipe system, making a new washer plate for the forward port engine mount and adding o-rings to the anodes to stop them vibrating lose etc, etc...

Don't kick yourself too hard Stu, the fact you found Adrian or he found you is all that matters.
Thanks Johnny, I am very happy I met Adrian.
Where would we be without the Adrians of the world. Wonderful to see a man who knows his stuff. Great video!
Couldn't agree more!
Adrien "Too technical". Me: "MORE PLEASE!" This guy should be a national treasure - so much knowledge *and* a good teacher. Great video, as usual. I would watch a channel from him nerding on about Detroit Diesels anytime. Mustie1 would dig it, too.
I'd watch that channel too. :)
i agree i am seeing things Adrien is pulling apart that Buss grease monkey has never even talked about.
KT3406E might watch it too ... but just to complain about Detroits :p
@@hartsfire5706 - Bet Scott and his son would also enjoy a channel from Adrian too.
I didn't understand most of the dialogue, but I watched it nonetheless.
Adrien should be accepted into the Detroit Diesel hall of fame.
He sure should. :)
Amen! Such a treasure of detailed information... all from memory and very willing to share treasures that I'm sure cost him much time, cash or skin to learn. He deserves recognition and commendation!
Here! Here!
Despite the fact I have absolutely no clue about engines, I'm captivated and glued to my screen listening. It's honestly a pleasure just watching a master craftsman do what they do best. This was a fun video.
Best regards from Tennessee, US.
Thanks John, there is something about listening to someone who has something completely sussed.
Bus Grease Monkey has his notepad and pencil in hand while watching Adrien. 😂 Adrien is so far above any other Detroit mechanic I’ve yet to see. He’s amazing.
I can just feel how Deep Adrians Knowledge goes. What a great guy to know and I feel confident that the engine is going to be dialed in and ready for a long long time to come.
Totally!
Like Richard at Precision Transmissions in Amarillo. He'd give you the shirt off his back, and his knowledge and ability are frightening.
For sure, I think it is going to run sweetly for years to come now.
@@DangarMarine
Uh like it should have the FIRST time you paid to rebuild it.... but obviously you feel this more than we do, LOL. I’m still surprised by your refusal to call those crooks out... it’s either Jesus in you [or something similar?] LOL. Much respect from me Stu! Everyone is praising Adrian, but I think you need acknowledgment for your class! [I would have been cursing those guys out, and I DO have Jesus!]
Adrian's a treasure. His head is so stuffed with knowledge I don't think any book could ever duplicate it. Hope he takes his vitamins... and gets an apprentice!
I know stuff all about diesels but to watch a Master Craftsman ply his trade and share his knowledge is a great thing to see! I’m glued to every Ep of this rebuild! Great viewing!
Thanks Paul!
The man knows his stuff , i cut my teeth on Detroit's about forty years ago ,i hate when folks pay money for a job and get screwed over !
Thanks mate, it is great to meet someone who really knows their stuff.
This Bloke is an Aussie Bloody Legend.
Kids...Be Like Adrian!!!
What a genuinely decent, humble, resourceful and knowledgeable Man.
We could certainly do with more Adrians. :)
Adrien is most definitely detail orient. And a class act, as botched as the assembly was he's hasn't ragged on that shop once. He points out the problem and explains how to do the job properly.
Classy. You nailed it.
It's like Adrien is the conductor teaching you a symphony and soon you will be enjoying the wonderful sound of the Detroit!
Can't wait!
Not only is Adrian knowledgeable, but he's a patient teacher as well.
He does have a great approach to teaching.
It must be comforting to know that by the time your Detroit goes back into Renko, it's been given a full work over by a professional who really knows his stuff.
You're not wrong Paul, I'm going to have a huge amount of faith in it when it goes back in.
Please thank Adrian from all of us. What a knowledgeable bloke! He didn’t have to let you film, but I’m sure glad he did.
Will do. :)
Adrien is the kind of bloke, as an American, I would expect to meet in Australia. Toss back a beer or 30 and BS till brecky.
We wish there were more aussies like him around the place, bit of a dying breed now.
I would not call this bloke a bullshitter, look at the meathooks on him, he could teach you time travel, IE knock you into next wednesday. And at least there are still a few blokes around that know their trade well. Stuart did well to find him.
Hope you know what doing. ? I do 15 years with diesel
Merry Christmas Mikey!
I travel regularly and am happy to say that there's still plenty of blokes like Adrian in the bush.
It astounds me how capable a man and a shed can be. I’m just in awe! Such a great vid to learn from! Thanks Stu and Adrian!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've got a feeling Adrian is going to be a busy man for a long time after these videos.
Every bastard with a Detroit is going to be booking in.
Yeah, I’ll second that. He sweats diesel and has oil in his veins. The way he nit picked every mistake made by the previous mob speaks knowledge, and he doesn’t cut corners to save a dollar. If I had a Detroit, I’d be getting his number.
I think if you own a Detroit and are anywhere near the Central Coast you are mad not to take it to Adrian.
@@DangarMarine as engines go, the Detroit is actually quite simple in operation and will last virtually forever. It achieves this by its design, tolerances, and attention to details. It takes a craftsman who knows what can be "close" and what needs to be "exact" in order to assemble one properly. Perhaps the first place who went through the engine should restrict themselves to things like small-block Chevy engines...something that 16 year old kids here in the US can learn to rebuild in high school shop class.
I spent 18 months in tech school after my public schooling was complete, mostly focused on Detroits. Instructors were quite clear that 18 months of training was about enough to give us an edge when we went looking for a REAL Detroit mechanic who needed a trainable ASSISTANT. (I then joined the US Navy to work on diesels, and ended up repairing gyrocompass systems instead...)
Great video work there capturing all the best bits of rebuilding the Detroit. And the icing on the cake is seeing the cockatoo, and all the beautiful parrots eating out of your hand. .
Glad you enjoyed it.
Adrian takes 30 minutes to explain why he's going to do a 5 minute job, that's pretty cool he's took the time to teach all of us how injectors work.
One thing I noticed about these past videos about the rebuild is it's like going to the shop, doing a bit of work, really getting into it, then having to go home after 45 mins. That disappoint when Mom calls you in for Dinner when you're playing with your friends.
I like your analogy. :)
This man has forgotten more about Detroit diesels than I'll ever know about anything.
You and me both.
Let's not exaggerate, You've done your research and know your way around a Step-Sister/Brother intimacy like no other.
Adrian certainly knows his stuff and is modest too......makes a nice change listening to a guy not raving on about himself continually
and his achievements !!
I've owned detroit 2 cycles since 1979 and been into all crooks and crannys of them. This is absolutley the very best explaination of the injectors I've ever heard. This Man is genius. Thanks
Adrien can never retire, if so he must pass on his knowledge to someone .He is the Diesel Jedi Master !!
this is a man who loves what he does.
Wow, Adrian is an amazing teacher! His commentary/explanations is fantastic! If he had his own channel I'd watch him for sure and I reckon I'd learn heaps! This has been a fantastic piece of content!
I agree, he is a great teacher.
Thanks Heath, he sure is.
The pleasure in watching Adrian ply his enormous knowledge is very satisfying.I bet his bill is less than the previous engine rebuild and twice as good.
Such blessings to have a master mechanic available at such a close proximity, willing to help and share his knowledge in front of your camera lens. Even more of blessing that you can call him your friend and vice versa. Good tidings to you all.
Couldn't agree more!
Your Mecanic knows what he is doing and thats what you call still old school and i love the birds you feed and the Umbrella Cockatoo is beautiful
Thanks 👍
It took me Back when I did my Australian Army training as a motor mechanic 1972 it’s Great to have an Old Hand who’s willing to share information and little Tricks Should be 💯 after this, then Happy Sailing ⛵️👍🏁💪🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺 Excellent Work 👍
Thanks Ed.
What a privilege to witness master mechanics freely sharing expertise and skills that have taken a work lifetime of effort and experience to acquire. Thank you gentlemen!
Glad you enjoyed mate. :)
What an ingenious and smart bloke Adrian is. I could listen to him talking above my intelligance level all bloody day! The Force is strong in this one.
Adrian's midichlorian count rivals that of Anakin Skywalker 😅
This man should be teaching young folks “Detroit 101”! Knows his shit!
Adrian’s knowledge is unreal he is a true master! Love the workshop everything has its place nothing flash just everything he needs to get the job done! He is a true tradesmen
That's it, a workshop that is setup to do a job without fuss.
I think Adrian is a national treasure! You're pretty lucky to have some that knowledgeable to help with you engine. Adrian will put it right.
I think so too!
This gentleman is a fountain of knowledge! A superb asset to his community!
Absolutely!
Damm you were lucky to hook up with him. Kind of friend you want in your life.
I was thinking just the same thought. What an encyclopaedic mind of Detroit’s.
Wow, it is quite clear Adrien knows his shit. I am watching this because of the shear joy he exudes. What an amazing person.
He is a great guy.
I am in Surbiton, on the River Thames, on the outskirts of London. The weather has been crap for weeks. Not cold but slate-grey, wet weather, day after day. Of course, it is raining as I type. We have just moved to Tier 4 covid-19 lockdown due to a new virus mutant that is 70% more infective than the first one (!). We may only leave home for groceries, healthcare or limited exercise. Christmas is officially cancelled. However, my day just brightened as I have 40 minutes to get engrossed in Stu, his diesel engine, and the Detroit guru, Adrian. Thanks. It really helps.
You're welcome Brian, I hope things pick up in the UK as the vaccine rollout happens. Merry Christmas!
@@DangarMarine Merry Christmas Stu, and let's hope for a better 2021 for everyone.
There is something about being with a guy who is in complete control and knows what has happened ,why and how to stop it again. Adrian is a absolute legend!
He sure is. :)
Amazing how many fine adjustments on a Detroit are made with a hammer
No toolbox should be without several of them.
Adrian is a bloody legend. I shall call first beer of each day Ado in honor of his awesomeness
I like your style. ;)
I love how one or the other of you is explaining something and the other starts going "Yeah yeah yeah" before he finishes
Adrians a top bloke , very much like yourself in explaining things in simple terms that anyone can understand. ( thoroughly enjoyed watching him)
Glad you enjoyed it. :)
Detroit has sure grown up since you were there last, sure was an adorable puppy. What an incredibly interesting guy he is, outstanding for sure!
He's getting big now for sure!
That Adrien is a font of knowledge on them detroits, you can see a lifetime of experience at work.
Adrian reminds me of a Chief I used to work with in the Merchant Marine. A great guy, he knew his Detroit's and his EMDs and Alcos like nobody I ever worked with. I learned a lot from him.
A shame the engine needs to be done again but what a perfect guy to do it. Adrian just seems like he lives this stuff, seems like a real pro.
He definitely knows his Detroits.
With all these precision parts working together, you have to wonder how the first engines were even created.
Adrian! The man the myth the legend of Detroit diesels from the land down under! And remember : the job isn’t finished until we clean up and put the tools away.
I think the sign means that you need to cleanup shortly before retirement. ;)
Can smell the desil through the screen. Very cool to see these totally mechanical engineer and all the little tips and tricks to working on them. Andrian is a legend! That tester he made is pretty cool.
It is pretty cool, I really like it. :)
Adrian should be recognised as a living National Treasure. Unfortunately people like Adrian really don't get the recognition they deserve. He is an absolute genius in what he does, just the way he works in replacing 'things that should be replaced' just an honest Aussie Bloke...how refreshing. Aren't you a lucky man Stu to find him...can we have more from Adrian please...could watch him all day.
Thanks mate. A few more videos with Adrian yet before the engine is ready to go.
Adrian is the man!! What a fountain of knowledge ur real lucky to have found him Stu. Could watch him all day such a nice guy as well, willing to take the time to explain everything!! Not many like him around!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Couldn't agree more!
Glad you got introduced to Adrian, and I'm appreciative of being allowed to look over his shoulder. He's a rare one, possessing the knowledge, and the will to share it. What a turn of luck!
Me too!
" Making the GM great again .... again " loving this series . Adrian is as rare as a unicorn .
Thanks Steve, glad you're enjoying it. :)
Adrian is amazing. It is great that these skills are being documented and recognised. A true craftsman who has got his mind right inside the workings of engines.
Couldn't agree more!
Adrian is old school engineer, knows his stuff and is a pleasure to watch.
Adrien is a man so full of knowledge about what he does is amazing. The world needs more like him, people who take pride in their work. Craftsman 100%. He needs an apprentice so the knowledge does not pass with him, he is just the right age to pass what he knows on.
An extraordinary insight into the 'dark art' of detroits. Thank you Adrian. Thank you Stu.
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant video, I love the work you are doing to the boat and how detailed and honest your videos. This guy is fascinating to watch, nice to see someone who knows the old Detroit’s like the back of his hand. The only thing I’d have added to was the explanation of how the fuel is metered by the injector plunger. Fuel passes from the inlet port between the upper and lower helix’s and in through the bore of the plunger. As the plunger travels down fuel spills back out through the inlet port until the upper helix passes the inlet port closing it off. The plunger then continues down pressurising the fuel below and around it and forcing it out through the tip once the injector opens. Once the lower helix passes the spill port the pressure is dumped and injection stops. The injectors meter the fuel based on how long the injection phase is, it starts when the upper helix passes the inlet port and ends when the lower helix passes the spill port. The large slot in the plunger at one end of the upper helix is the zero fuel position, at that point the inlet port is always open and the fuel does not become pressurised. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the detailed explanation mate. Injectors certainly are facinating things, particularly to do what they do without any electronics.
Adrian is a freaking genius
I could spend the rest of my life in his shop
Me too!
Adrian knows his stuff for sure. Stu, it looks like you and Renko are in great hands!
We are!
Adrian is an honest Master Engineer. Just eyeballing can tell things are wrong. Impressive.
A master class in Detroit Diesels. Very fortunate Stu that you have this well of information so close to you!
I am very luck. :)
Wow, The Knowledge about these Diesel is unbelievable!
What a knowledgeable bloke Adrian is, i could watch this all day long, Thanks Stu, Now why would anyone down thumb this video, haters have to hate is suppose.
Thanks Jimmy, glad you enjoyed.
Hi you have a good diesel mechanic ive been in the trade for 50 yrs and hes good mate !!
Thanks Derek. :)
Wow! Rarely see a craftsman that good. Thanks Adrian (and Peter)
Those blokes that rebuilt your diesel last time cocked it up Mate.
Great soul, that Adrien. Make sure he has fishing trips for life!!
"25 to 30 foot pounds more than oodles." Proper mechanic, Adrien. A diamond engineer and a brilliant friend to have. I can just see Renko planing on the water when that engine's gone back in.
A few ft/lb less than FT
You are lucky to know such an expert with Detroit's, guys like that are few and far between
I am indeed.
Another great vid Stu!
I spent as much time nodding in agreement reading the comments of praise for Adrian as I did watching you both at work.
Having had dozens of king parrots feeding in our backyard in the Lower Blue Mountains when we lived there, it was a real treat to see a Lutino amongst the others.
Thanks for that!
if i was a young again i would be his apprentice for free, people like him must pass there knowledge on or it would be loss, i could listen them for hours on end
I’m enjoying watching an absolute master at work.
Me too. :)
What a bloody legend. His dad's a spitting image too!
Keep this guy on your short Christmas list! He's bonified n patience. Almost like he's getting a bigger thrill sharing his decades of knowledge with you than you are receiving it. Life dont get no gooder. Count yourself lucky. I'd pay to sit in his workshop to watch him work👍
looks like shes coming along nicely, adrian seems like a real wealth of knowledge and willing to pass it on to others is nice to see
Most of us prefer to work without an audience. Adrian has shown tremendous generosity, in my view, in allowing us to look over his shoulder while he works. And then he imparts information as he goes. Thanks Adrian.
Yes, I've had work done by other people who have refused to give away any of there techniques. They wouldn't even let me watch let along film them!
It is good to see someone who knows what they are doing, willing to share knowledge, and not sucking air in and shaking their heads, buy that man a beer!
For the number of little things that were wrong with some of the parts, that Detroit sure was running nice. It should run even better with no problems after Adrian gets it back together. It should be problem free for a long time now. Nice job!
It is interesting how well it was running. I really get the impression that these Detroits are and engine that will always get you back to port even if something goes wrong.
This guy is priceless I've learn more from this guy than my teacher at uti 😂😂😂
Master craftsman at work. A joy to watch and learn.
Heading towards a finely tuned engine. Few gets Adrien’s attention to detail!
I think so too. Going to be a sweet engine once it goes back in.
Every thing seems so simple to him . Legend
Another awesome episode with Adrian. What a pleasure to watch him work with such incredible knowledge! Adrian should’ve been the one to rebuild it in the first place!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Stu I could watch Adrian work and listen to him all day long that 35 minutes just vanished instantly. Such a joy to watch him and his patient nature with you was incredible. He really should consider making more RUclips video's his a gem.. Love how his dad came and helped with the press -
I'm bloody glad you have an Adrian on the job.
Truckloads of piece of mind.
Excellent to watch an expert on the job.....
Definitely giving me peace of mind.
Riveting vid m8, learned a lot about Detroit diesel's watching bus grease monkey but Adrian takes it to the max....!!! Such an easy layed back style, this guy is an hidden master. I could watch you guy's all day, totally hands on with clear layman's language of every task.....just like bgm & Mustie1 bravo😉👍👌🇬🇧🏴
Glad you enjoyed it.
Adrian must be the human equivalent of Google amazing knowledge, craftsmanship and engineering.
Adrian such a hard worker, not many of them left.
It appears that Adrian is a genuine national treasure, embodying much of what makes Australia great! I'm impressed, and he 's a great teacher.
national treasure this guy the knowledge in his feel for tolorabces is other worldly
What a wealth of knowledge, Adrian is a national treasure of diesel mechanics. Should give you great confidence in the rebuild.
I will certainly have a lot of confidence in the engine after this.
Guys like Adrian, who really know their stuff, are like gold aren't they.
Its great to listen to a man who knows his trade and gets on with it.
By far the best show on the internet, highlight of the week!
Thanks Gilbert, glad you enjoyed. :)
That mechanic is definitely right on point, hard to find someone that knows his trade like this gentleman especially around the boat yard, at least it is here in the US,
Adrien's knowledge and his willingness to share it is really amazing. He really seems to enjoy discussing the finer points with you regarding the engine. These videos that you've done with Adrien on the breakdown and rebuild of the Detroit diesel are better than anything on TV. Thanks for putting this together! Best regards from Atlanta, GA
