  • How to give life and personality to your character designs. In this video I discuss the importance and techniques to take your character designs to a whole other level. As well as explaining how the same things that give characters their uniqueness can also help you become more confident in how you carry yourself in your own life.

Top reasons why I'm addicted to Will Terrell (like since 3 days ago):
    1. the intro music, because it reminds me of Monsters Inc. and is great happy dancing material.
    2. His honesty, humility and appreciation of wisdom.
    3. His gorgeous, colourful laugh!
    4. He makes me smile. Like crazy big smiling.
And of course 5. I love watching the drawings and listening to the stories. You make the world a more colourful and exciting place which is so so so priceless. Thank you and high five for being awesome.

Wow, this is really making me think about the way I carry myself. Once I was sitting with this group of girls from my class and they were having their conversation and I was sorta just listening but not taking part in it, and they were talking about how much they liked our old class and how everyone was friends with each other, so I spoke up and said "maybe for you, but not for me", and they looked at me real funny and said that that was because I didn't want to be friends with them. I was so taken aback, I never realised that that was the way people percieved me! All I've ever wanted was to have friends, but I'm just so shy about speaking in a foreign language that I land up not speaking at all. When I first moved to Portugal, I couldn't speak any Portuguese, and whenever I tried to talk to people we could never understand each other, so I just stopped trying because it was too humiliating. I landed up sitting by myself reading in the library or a bathroom stall for an entire year. I can speak portuguese now, but now I realise that I still come off like I don't want to talk to people, even though I really do :(
So anyway, you inspired me to try be friendlier when I go back to school! >:D

    • @yuukiflow
      @yuukiflow 9 лет назад

i'm really shy myself but when i was in Paris for a month (in a school), i noticed people tend to come to me to talk or ask about a work we had to do without really knowing why and at the end of the month i had many friends and i've never come to them. That was really weird when i thought about it afterward but it also helped me to be less shy/scared of people. But yea even if i'm shy i'm usually friendly with people, all i gotta say now is good luck to you :D

      April Sunshine
Hey April, your comment really showed me something curious. I'm portuguese and I live in Leiria.
Where I'm staying are lots of foreign students and I see myself in the position you stated on your comment. I would like to speak with the foreign people I meet, but I am not that good with english.
It was also curious, because I got to know how many people from other countries may feel when studying here in portugal. Due to our language being kinda strange and not many countries use it. I don't think we are not welcoming, I like to believe we are, but I understand your situation :)
I don't know from where you come from, but it seems you also have interest in arts. Wich is cool ^^
I hope you get that obstacle out of your way soon, I would love the chance to know someone from another country.
If you need anything and your in my area just say ;)

tranglomango I'm from South Africa, and I'm living in the Algarve :)
They were welcoming at first, but we both gave up trying too quickly. I've met portuguese people who are really friendly, and others who aren't, so I think it just depends on the person.
Haha, yeah, I really love art :D. I'm planning on being an artist when I finish school. I'm assuming you like art too, since you're watching this video.
By the way, I think you're English is really good! :) You speak a lot better than most people I know.

Your videos really make my day. I'm in my late 20's and have struggled with depression and anxiety for years. In school I was told animation isn't a 'real job' and all of the crap that was happening back then just got me down and I gave up on my dream. Anyway, long story short I had an awakening recently and figured if I don't even try I'll be doing this job that I hate forever and I can possibly change that! So I'm going back to uni and it's people like you that helped me realise that's what I should be doing. It's what I was born to do, so no wonder an office job makes me miserable!! Anyway, your art is inspiring and so full of character and story, I just love it and love listening to your stories and experiences. Thanks you so much for making the videos and for being so honest :)

i wanna say something about the friendzone real quick bc of what you said in the beginning:
accepting the "friendzone" as something that exists implies that a) as a guy, being in a friendship with a girl is not/never enough, and b) that a guy being friendly means he is expecting or trying to get a romantic reaction out of it or at least that he is somehow in the right of getting that kinda thing out of it just for being friendly to a female. so all in all and because we only ever say that males are in the friendzone, it's a pretty sexist concept.
that being said, i love the video, as always! :)

As someone afflicted with PBF (Permanent Bitch Face) I could not agree with you more. It's a constant chore to remember to project happy even though I feel relatively happy most of the time. I'm always taken by surprise by people who ask me if something is wrong out of the blue. Oh darn. Forgot to slap a smile on while I was thinking. Open body position. Uncross arms. Look. Don't glare. Yeesh. Sure wish I'd been aware of my affliction in High School. Might have had more fun lol. Unfortunately, I was not openly diagnosed until I was 50. Went around all that time thinking I was smiling and it was just the camera that never caught it!

It's amazing, you're like cartoonist/therapist. Maybe that would look great on a business card? Haha! :D
Anyway, that is so true! Our attitudes, especially towards ourselves, can be so obvious to outsiders. You can stop a whole group from panicking in front of a big deadline by just acting confident and calm. :)

I'm sitting here on my bed watching this at 2:43 in the morning, and thinking to myself how interesting this video was. From the actual drawing (which is super adorable and just really great-looking) to the talk about how people carry themselves and personality, all of it hooked me. Your question, about what makes people the way they are, is something I've asked myself a lot (I plan to major in Psychology actually), but I had never really thought about how that might translate into art. Maybe art is personality? Maybe, maybe not. But now that I've given what you've said some thought, I plan to keep an eye out for that "personality" and try to incorporate it in my own artwork.
Thanks for the insight and keep on drawing~

I really admire how you observe people. That's a lot of insight from somebody who's just simply looking from afar. It's telling because you know that people who get friendzoned or rejected are for a pretty good reason, and it's insecurity, not because they're 'too nice' or some other excuse other guys seems to think. Love the drawing xD, I remember my awkward experience with Mr Friendzone.

Reminds me of a sweet elderly man I saw the other day in a Copenhagen café! He was tall and thin, and he had a long, black coat on that almost touched the floor, and he had this massive (seriously!) Russian fur hat on that was almost wider than the man himself, and then he went to the coffee bar and bought the tiniest cup of coffee ever, and held it with such appreciation and delicate touch with one finger pointing out like a fine lady! :) Just reminded me of your drawings, I really think you would have loved him!

Friend Zone is great Will! and your voice over was so insightful. I have a fiend who studied body language in order to become a better poker player. As a result he can look a couple across a bar and tell you that it's their first date, that the girl really likes the guy but the guy might not be that interested in the girl and basically give you a play by play on how the date will progress, all from observing body language. This is a skill that I really need to work improve on for my own art. It's evident in your characters that you also share the same talent for observation as this friend of mine has.

The story you told about the man trying to pick up the lady in the bar was SO ironic for me! One of my most resent caricatures was in a bar. A woman kept eyeing a man on the other end of the room and some of the ways she was fidgeting made me laugh inside. She would twist her ankle around the stool leg, bite her bracelet like she was trying to unclasp it with her mouth, and kept looking behind her as though that was the only way she could take her eyes off of this man. I love your videos and I just had to share my little story with you - I'm sure you'll appreciate it

This is posted in a very right time. Lately I think a lot about my socializing skills. I'm usually very awkward and people around me are like... "um yeah, right ".
I know it has to do a lot with self esteem and self image... but even when I feel better I just have no idea how to talk to people.
I should work harder and give myself a time to observe a little bit so I get the slightest idea how I can do it, to try to find and develop myself... instead of getting frustrated, angry girl... which I'm.. and sometimes arrogant to hide my insecurities.
This video helped a lot. Thank you. :-)
    There's hope.

u are so insightful its mind boggling the whole thing with the way people walk is insanely true, sometimes ill walk slower with long strides to seem mellow or more approachable and sometimes ill walk very upright to seem grown up, it's absolutely insane how blind we really are to these simple, obvious things, and sometimes we need people like you to help us realize them

i got alot about character design specially from the foot part that how they walk, how they carry them self and people don't have the similar style of sitting and not getting too much in detail but focusing on the proportions thingy and starting drawing with feet. Thank you so much, Will! For the longest time I always focused on making a character's face and designing around that, but I never thought to give posture or even the feet personality to help convey a character's, well, character. I always look forward to your people sketching vids, there's just so much to learn from. I was kind of that artist that could draw a character sheet over and over again, but struggled to convey what made a character have personality. I agree completely that caricatures are meant to define, not make fun of, and that's one thing that I feel I take too seriously when I do people sketching to where I don't give a character personality. Thanks again for these words of wisdom!

I just thought of commenting here because seriously what you said in the video got me thinking.. and I was wondering why the heck do you bring me so much joy no matter what you're talking about I just feel really happy. And like why that is? After you spoke about faking it till you make it.. and it's because you literally are so damn positive. I am such an over analyzer and when things go south in my personal life, I suffer internally a ton and my depression gets severe to the point of seriously considering suicide. "Fake it 'till you make it" is so true. I used to be very shy and feel very anxious in group situations, but I started acting like I was fine (and tried not to look constipated, haha) and eventually it became reality. When I tell anyone that I'm a shy/awkward person, they look really confused and tell me that's not at all true.

Hurray for another video! You really spoke out to me! I recently found myself in a very huge rut. I'm doing work here and there for a client for free because the project just seems like too much fun not to play with. But for some time, I was just totally unable to do any kind of artwork.
But recently I've gotten better, I found new inspirations and started doing art again! So much art is happening! I feel almost enlightened these days. I have noticed that I've been presenting myself differently than I was. I'm not sure if it's confidence, but an artist friend of mine whom I help out a lot called me very charismatic the other day, maybe that's what it is. But like you, I too am still a work in progress.. I still need to find paying employment to help myself move forward, but at least who I am and what I want to be doing seems clear in my mind now. I feel like I've only just taken control of my life and I excited to see what I do with it!
Anyway, keep up the great chats Mr. Terrell! Who know's where I'd be without your wisdom and your laughs!! Such a great laugh!

Catching body language is something most of people don't do, but it's just so exciting and useful. I started to realise how much are humans showing about themselves just by way they stand and gesture when I got interested in mentalism and mind reading, because professionals really can tell truth from lie just by the way someone is acting, and hell, that's so neat. :D But really, getting real feedback on what you're saying and knowing what is other persons thinking about this and that, even if they don't open they mouth is very helpful, and also realising what I am doing with my body when speaking.
Now, I open a video about drawing (I am still terrible at it), and the guy is talking about this topic, and I'm just... :O I guess psycholgist, mentalist and dealer aren't only professions where it's required.

    • @ratglyph

Also, fun fact, body and mind are really depending on each other. There is literally technique used to make someone feel better just by forcing them to change position of their body (mirroring, pacing and leading).

This is my favorite people sketching episode so far as far as content goes! Thanks for the tips. I especially found the part about starting with the feet helpful. I always go straight for the face and actually end up doing the feet last. Now I know to think more about the details of their personality aside from what they wear or how they look. I'm excited to see where that info will take me. Thanks so much again, will. I can never get over how inspiring and helpful you videos are. I can't wait for the next one!

***** Can I just say I find your laugh super adorable??? Like seriously, it's one of the reasons I kept watching and listening. I really like how you see the world. It's truly admirable how far you've come.
You have a lot of great advice, and your art style is like, wonderfully amazing, it made me realize I have a lot to learn. You've brought light to the things I've been missing in my drawings and in life, so I want to say thanks for being adorable and amazing and sharing what you know. C':

ok, this video was awesome, really. hope more people had their feelings touched too. I was once the guy faking my posture and confidence, never noticed the little things on character design and this will help me in so different ways, both in life and in work and college. For real, thanks Will (i'm sorry about my english, hope you can understand)

Another great video. I first came across one of your people sketching videos when I was at a big low sometime last year. Mood still up and down but I am trying to keep on the positive. I found this channel following an internet search looking for advice. I am so glad I did. You have given me some hope in pursuing art again after probably close to 15-20 years when I had pretty much given up. I aim to firstly take up for my own leisure time and then maybe in a business capcity. I have made some steps. However I still feel some resistance surrounding ability and to keep going to improve. This is something I am trying to challenge. Thank goodness for people like you giving time and advice so freely. I look forward to your future videos. Merry Christmas, Lou : )

I love these talk&draw videos you do! As an aspiring animator it is honestly so inspiring to listen to you talk about art and just random stuff that follows. Your techniques are also really cool and mesmerising to watch ahhh.. and i'm thinking of trying some new stuff out after watching your videos too!
But yeah, i'm just really glad I found your channel today. I'm at a point in life where i'm kinda headed a way that's not so common and though i hate to admit, I really need some guidance. It only just clicked with me recently that there are other talented kids out there that I gotta stand up against to get into uni y'know? Gotta step up my game and not settle for "getting by" like you say.
But enough with the sap story, you're such a real, funny and amazing person and it's people like you that give me hope that i'll make it somewhere someday, thanks for the awesome content you post! :D

Will, thanks for sharing your talent. I also appreciate just how ridiculously happy you are in each of these videos. Good way to be, man.
I totally agree with your sentiment here - artists focus too much on drawing super cool, sleek characters that are totally lifeless. Their technical skills are admirable but they seem to be missing the biggest point in art.
In regards to comic books, you should really check out Greg Capullo's work on the New 52 Batman run. He nails the characters, particularly Batman. The hero is very humanized and the art speaks more to his personality and persona as "The World's Greatest Detective" rather than a walking mass of muscle.

Hi Will! First of all... Merry Christmas and happy 2015!! :D
You got a point there when you say personality is important on characters... I mention it 'cause recently I've seen lots of works (portfolios and reels) from different people to learn and take something interesting for me; and in many of them, 'cartoons' to be clear, I've noted that they have very good art application... just something was missing, but I couldn't find exactly what it was... Now I know is precisely that personality!! That's a very important matter to keep an eye on, and I'll be more careful about it in my drawings from now on... I think it has close relation to 'tell a story', hasn't it?
Well, glad to write you again, and congratulations for uploading another video! I really enjoy them, as said before! You're amazing!
    Have a good one!

Don't usually comment on anything but I wanted to say thanks for this truly inspirational & eye opening video. How I carry myself has been something I've been learning over the past year. Was really neat to see you apply that to the art world. I really love character design & want to learn how to add more expression to my drawings. I look forward to taking this new mindset with me into the future. Keep being awesome bro! Thanks again! - Silver

I was about to comment to same thing pretty much. I used to be a timmid and scared person but I have been changing that, this video really really helped me in both my art motivation and now I want
To try and carry myself more confidently. I am scared to sketch, I always think I'm doing it wrong, though there really is no wrong way to sketch. I just see the sloppiness and am scared of people seeing me sketch them. Haha fear is something I am overcoming.
I'm really glad you took something so great from this.

+Shweetastic That's awesome bro! For the past few months I have practiced throwing my shoulders back whenever I feel self conscious or really anytime I'm feeling insecure. The change, although small sometimes, really helps me.
I know the feels of being afraid to share my artwork or even do it in fear of it not being liked or made fun of because it's not perfect believe me. I've always wanted to draw ever since I was little but, I have tremors that run through my hands so I thought it would never be possible for me. They weren't the worst in the world but it was enough of an excuse for me not to try.
About 2-3 years ago my family purchased the adobe suite & I got my hands on Illustrator. Illustrator is a unique program great for using a mouse to draw. Although it's setbacks are the coloring, the ability to line taught me how to create shapes & I gained confidence in my artwork. I began to try & sell my artwork as I continued to seek out new ways to improve. 3 years later, I'm a full time digital artist using a drawing screen & Manga Studio. I never in a million years would've thought I'd be doing this at all. Without God & the support of friends & family I never would've even shared what I created with anyone.
All that to say, don't let the fear of failure stop you from pursuing your dream! It might not be perfect but who the hell is when they first start? I have a long way to go & continue to learn daily about things. I firmly believe even the pro's out there are constantly pushing themselves & growing. After all, it would be no fun if you were already amazing. I know it can be scary but I encourage you to go for it! You'll never know if you don't try! xoxo

+Slow Silver that's awesome!! I went to school for media design and production but I only had 1 drawing class and regrettably I didn't pay much attention because I didn't think what he was teaching concerned my style of art, I was so wrong. I want to eventually go to art school, but for now I will grow in my drawing. I've already learned so much from him and a couple people. I would love to do some sort of animation someday, and I would really like to sell my art at conventions, but as a kid I was pushed away from fan art so I'm trying to get back into it and I'm loving it, my hurdle right now is I feel like even if I'm drawing the characters my way that my style is to close to the original or that fine line between tracing and referencing.
That is really awesome that you use illustrator for your drawing and that you were able to over come the tremors. Knowing that practicing is something that every great artist is always doing makes me have motivation that even 1 year is improvement
