  • Ricky Ponting claims that he caught that catch 100% even though he clearly grassed it. He lost his composure when he was asked a tricky question by Indian journalist. And now Brad Haddin too joined the cheater's club by claiming wicket of New Zealand's Broom when his gloves actually dislodged bails.

Yep - ricky ponting is one of the all-time best batsmen and fielders. but also a cheat. but so are all aussies. having played grade cricket for years, i can tell you that they would sell their grandmother for a win. rather than win by being better at cricket, it's all about verbal abuse, cheating and anything else they can do to win. and their national team leads the way and guides the young generation of players. very sad. especially when they're so good.

Some people are saying he shouldn't appeal, why not it was extremely close to hitting the gloves. Anyway it was given not out

Paul Harris and Yuraj singh have claimed almost identical catches where they had their fingers facing down so the ball has touched the ground, and both catches were deemed legal. It is clearly a umpires interpretation of whether Ponting had control before he hit the ground and he is entitled to appeal. It is a completely different story however if the ball has bounced before going to hand ... thats blatant cheating if done deliberately, but don't assume the catcher would know.

  • @DeanWhipper

Really can't see anything wrong with that catch, he clearly had control of it before he hit the ground.
If he had fallen in a different and could have landed with his palm facing upward the ball would have stayed in his hand.
If you want to see exciting cricket with acrobatic catches you can't penalize someone for diving full length and having no choice but to land with the ball touching the ground.

Jim Wilson misses the point- the issue is whether Ricky Ponting fairly claimed the catch. Replays suggest no. And he would have known (equals not fair play). What's more, the replays only serve to embarrass you.

On the battlefield, the first casualty is the truth. If a batsman at Ponting’s level claims he did not ground a ball when in fact he did, he is either incompetent and should not be playing, or he is lying. That journalist should have questioned one of two things - his integrity or his competency.

As for the rest, yes there were some dodgy umpire decisions, on both sides (that's right the aussies got some too) even though the Indians copped more. Explain to me how that is the aussie teams fault, they were neutral umpires and they gave the decisions not the aussies. Then we have people saying they were unsportsmanlike for celebrating before shaking hands with the Indians, seriously show me a video of a winning team running to congratulate the losing team before celebrating before or since.

@dospeak The journalist questioned his integrity by questioning why he claimed the catch. By questioning whether Ponting believed he legally took the catch the journalist is questioning his integrity because he claimed the catch.

  • @dicko361

Crap. The Aussies done nothing that no other Countries cricket team has done in the pass and since. If you think its a catch your allowed to appeal. The law of the game clearly states that a player is out if you have control of the ball before it touches the ground. Clarke clearly caught his ball at slip and had control before rolling over and touching the ground.

We don't threaten boycotts when umpiring decisions don't go our way. We don't try to burn down stadiums when we lose. We don't try and pick players that have been suspended. We don't make excuses when we fuck up and get fined. We don't accuse ppl of cheating when they claim half volleys against us like andrew strauss. We don't have to have spectators locked out of a game because they went beserk. And we certainly do not have to apologise to the likes of India who have the worst record of all.

Since the first Pakistan team arrived in Australia they were faced with swearing non stop. Pakistan players didn't speak English so they didn't know until later on when they learnt English. When Miandad swore at them back Dennis Lillee kicked him after moving in his way while he was running. Australia should not be allowed to play if they cant win without abuse. Mcgrath abused Chanderpaul really badly and Steve Waugh did it to Ambrose so much that Ambrose said he wanted to punch him. When I play cricket I like my opposition and I never say a word.

Why is it that every time something doesn't go Indias way, they start making accusations of cheating ? There's dozens of such videos here on RUclips.
Of the 22 international cricketers who have been punished for match fixing, 9 are Indians. The most from any country. None are Australian. When it comes to cheating, seems that the Indians have the runs on the board.

You're the one who needs to think before they type. Cronje admitted at the King Commission held in 2000 that he had taken money from bookmakers to contrive the results of cricket matches. South African players have stated that they received offers from Cronje to 'under perform'. Cronje testified at the King Commission that he thought it was 'money for jam' and apologised for his behavior.
Look at the corruption that's occurred in your own country before you criticise other nations!

Apparently you haven't played cricket in that position. You are able to see where the ball hit. That fielding Position is one of the most Dangerous, why? because keeping your eyes on the ball will prevent extremely serious injuries. Any other fielding position you can proably take your eyes of the ball.Last but not least. There was a time in Cricket where you did not even wait for the umpire to give you out you walked because you knew.Ricky should of known that. That's how the game should be played.

I can't see anyone considering whether Ponting didn't realise in the moment that he had grounded the ball. I think his response was so feisty because he genuinely thought he caught it fairly.
Look at the replay - he catches the ball but then his head slams into turf at the same time he grounds the ball. In that moment, he probably didn’t realise that he had actually grounded the ball with his hand (smashing your head can disorient you). It’s easy to say looking at the slow-Mo that he should have known but watch it in real time and you’ll realise it happened very quickly. Ponting’s behaviour was questionable at times but I think he is being vilified unreasonably here without people actually thinking about the sequence of events.

I have to comment on this.
First - the correct decision was made because the ball probably didn't hit the glove - benefit of the doubt to the batter.
2nd - Ponting is allowed to appeal as he caught the ball off the ground; now before you all shout "but he grounded it", take a careful look at the video - he dives full length, crunches into the ground and the helmet comes down right over the front of his face (kinda looks a bit funny actually) and it's then that the ball looks to have hit the ground as his hand rolls over...that's not a deliberate act and nor may he have known considering the helmet issue.
3rd - there was an incident before this where a nick went to Ponting at 2nd slip where it bounced and he immediately let the umpires know and didn't claim anything...and it wasn't an easy one to see either.
So just calm down and think a little when you assess this.
Which is not what the rabid Indian media did after the game!
