He took it seriously, back when I think very few actors could or would. He injected so much of his own interests and his ideals, even what it would be like to fly based on his flying experience. Just a thoughtful man. And IIRC, they didn't want him originally??? Right guy at the perfect time!

What an incredible scene, it's just downright criminal the Salkinds cut Donner out and didn't want to give Brando his money. This scene alone answers so many questions, not the least of which is how Superman got his powers back, why we never see Jor-El again, and why the Fortress of Solitude is practically useless now.

This was the main reason I liked the Donner cut of _Superman II._ In the theatrical release, after we saw Reeve scream out _"FATHER!",_ the next time we see him, he's gotten his powers back without _ANY_ explanation of how it happened. The Donner cut provided that explanation.

I never understood it .. but is seems to be intrinsic to the mythos. I've never understood how Superman's powers could be taken from him, or transferred to another .. etc because He's genetically a Kryptonian, at the molecular level, so nothing should be able to remove his powers, any more than someone can change their height or their IQ... but I don't know a version of Superman that hasn't used that story in some form. (Maybe, the recent Superman and Lois didn't do that story??) As far as reproduction is concerned... some stories have him fathering a child without changing into a human being, some don't. I like how Lois and Clark handled the question... an alien from another world can't father a child of a human female. Basic biology 101. Superman and Lois is kinder in that they had 2 sons, one fully powered Kryptonian, one more human.

The problem I have with this edit is how the original green crystal is shown. In the original film, this crystal survived the destruction of the crystal control console because Lois had it and left it away from the console. As Clark walks away from the destroyed console, the crystal illuminates to the right of the screen. In this edit, the crystal was found in the charred remains. In this edit, it survived by itself. In a way, it was Lois's actions that saved Superman after all Although I do admit that Clark being Superman meant he could not be with Lois when, in the comics, they actually married and had three kids.

I agree. Sadly, there will never be a perfect edit as Donner was replaced by a comedic hack....only to have Donner come back decades later to fix what he could.
The kids part varies, as some comics (thus depending on the writer) have the canon that they're incompatible. And as far as I know, it's the most common canon. Them with kids is typically an else-worlds timeline.

Por problemas legales con Marlon Brando, los productores no querían pagarle y por consiguiente no podían usar su imagen, años después Warner bros arreglo, pago y por eso se pudo usar la escena en la versión de Richard Donner

As a 9yr old in the original movie when CR picks up the green crystal and the scene cut it made zero sense, now over 40+ years later the scene now makes complete sense, and is so much more heartfelt and dramatic with the interaction between MB and CR.
Yeah, I know MB was an @$$ about things and they had to cut his scenes from SM2.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones 3 месяца назад +1

Brando wasn't an ass. They agreed to pay him a portion of the profits for both movies. They cut him out because they didn't want to pay him on the second one. The Salkinds were notorious for cheating their actors and directors on payments. It's just a shame they left this plot hole in instead of rewriting the scene with Lara like they did his earlier scenes.

I've never understood why this scene was cut from the theatrical film...
It makes the project more impactful..
We, understand now, why it was...
The first Superman movie was a Huge success beyond their expectations....
Marlon Brando would not return unless they offered him more $$ and a share of the gross...
Ms Kidder and Reeve did not approve of the new director, Hackman did not want to return to the project....
There were also creative differences among the writers and crew!
That's why there were 2 different versions of the film
