This boss is so unique. The fact that you have to find your face on a battlefield. I'd be terrified if I had to find my own face on a war scene. I'd be terrified if I lost my face at all, in fact.
paper mario does NOT allow decimal numbers assigned to hp and max hp, what it does is it obviously divides the max hp by 2 then it rolls the number to closest value, you should get 0.5 if you divide 1 by 2 which is a decimal number but paper mario doesn't allow that so if you roll 0.5 to the closest number you get 1, so it doesn't decrease value because obviously 1 is not lower than 1 lol tl;dr: decimal numbers like 0.5 are no-no for hp values in paper mario
what I learned from how this HP system works is the game "kills" mario whenever it checks the hp value, it usually checks hp value when HP value is updated (aka changed), so if you start a battle with 0 hp you're fine, if it _attempts_ to change it, if it becomes or stays at 0, the game "kills" mario. the game checks hp value whenever hp value has observed a change, or at least an attempt of change. what is interesting is that hole punch didn't actually cause that trigger... maybe the game "kills" mario whenever an actual damage is taken from an enemy or any other hazards damaging mario "properly", so whenever max hp value changes, if the max hp is lower than normal hp, it decreases the hp to current max hp, it doesn't "properly" damage mario. let's demonstrate it a little better with 1 functions and 2 values that one function is called damage, and 2 values are HP and MAXHP. when an enemy or hazard attacks mario, it invokes the damage function, and makes the damage process done "properly", however setting HP and MAXHP alone doesn't change it properly so the game doesn't "kill" mario. hooray! the question remains... what if the hole punch attack directly changed HP and MAXHP directly so the game didn't "kill" mario? that seems the case. i might edit this comment if i learn anything further
the first reply i made was about 1 max hp not being changed the second reply i made was about how hp changed, at least how i think it works (not officisl explanation of how hp works but meh :P)
So, in the "Survive scissors 999 damage attack" video, we saw that Mario's HP could increase above 999, but it was not shown in the HP indicator. Here we see that the same happens in the opposite case, as in the 1 HP test Mario's health dropped below 1 and above 0 (supposedly 0,5 health), and that is proved by you beeing able to block the next attack. Interesting.

Idea: Similiar to this challenge, but with Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. Can you survive Robo-Drilldigger's unavoidable attack at low HP? Just how low does it go until we can't survive it? The chances of this happening are probably really low, so I won't bet on this happening.

Thanks so much, hope you're having an awesome day as well! Experimenting with partners is fun and sometimes leads to some strange outcomes. In parts of the game where a cutscene is supposed to trigger dialogue from a partner that isn't with you, the game often crashes
Chests containing items are supposed to be completely indestructible and additionally make the ground below the chest indestructible. Even scissors cannot cut through a chest. If something tries to destroy a chest, it will have weird effects like overlapping. Is having 0/0 HP causing the item shuffle to not check whether certain items should be placed in the four spaces in front of the Hole Punch?
I can think of four possibilities, but I'm not sure which it is: (1) the 0/0 HP is responsible, (2) having 2 turns at the start of the fight instead of 3 is responsible, (3) dying to the hole punch several times and increasing the death to hole punch boss counter causes this, (4) it's possible but unlikely, or some combination of the above suggestions
Even if the indicator shows only up to 990, it will probably have 3960 hp after getting all the holes and if you managed to get hole puched again, would it still keep at 990?

funny enough things haven’t changed, in this game if you begin a battle with 0 HP (which can be achieved through a very complicated set of glitches and precise timing) then you die at the end of Mario’s attack despite not taking technically damage from anything (unless you heal of course)
I thought this couldn’t work knowing his max hp attack couldn’t be blocked and blocked still give damage. I see this challenge could have took hours to do! And for 999 hp I see the 999 being easy knowing he isn’t the scissors ;-;

It's not too often if you don't do something really crazy, but there are two things that often make the game not load properly or crash: (1) trying to do impossible things, like loading cutscene dialogue from a partner that isn't currently with you, and (2) there's a hash value at the end of the "data00" save file that has to be updated every time you edit it, and it's easy to forget to do that 😂
😎 And that's a great question! I'd love to see if that's possible! I don't think the Toads attack any of the bosses if you cheer, but I could be remembering incorrectly. I know they sometimes attack in regular battles, but I'm not sure if they help attack in boss battles

Ah, I think I know what you're talking about! When Mario is surrounded by enemies and he gets the attention of several of them at once, a wave battle begins. Is that what you mean? I think the one with the most enemies like that is in the sewers of Toad Town on the way to Princess Peach's castle

@@ZXMany how that one is interesting instead of every enemy being a wave is every enemy one enemy in that battle. But there also the casual wave battle when you just walk into an enemy and another enemies that’s close enough joins the battle.
Kind of! I found one of the RAM addresses for Mario's vertical position, and I was able to set it to a value and lock it. Gravity kept trying to bring Mario down, so that's why he was repeatedly jittering up and down like he was in the video!

@@Worst_Evil I haven't figured that out yet, there might be a way to do it. I think the ideal method might be finding the address used for how many 1-up mushrooms you have, and updating from 0 back to 1 every time a 1-up mushroom is used (or locking the value at 1)

I've seen weird HP behavior in the original Paper Mario 64. It glitches out and any move like the hammer kills Mario even if he doesn't take damage

It was either 3, 6, or 9

One of the Bobby's end up exploding (sometimes you lose 2 of them), and you keep the extra Bobby's

Have you tried 2hp maybe 500
I'm guessing both would work normally: hole punched at 2 HP would probably bring you down to 1, and 500 should bring you down to 250
Have you tried trying to make it possible for mario to have more than 1 1up musrom Fro 1hp
@@Worst_Evil I haven't figured that out yet, there might be a way to do it. I think the ideal method might be finding the address used for how many 1-up mushrooms you have, and updating from 0 back to 1 every time a 1-up mushroom is used (or locking the value at 1)
