The farm scene and the conversation between Vision and Ultron are two of the best scenes in the entire MCU. I think that Joss Whedon's vision for the film should have been realized on screen.

Lol so true, also the creative choice of making Ultron so talkative and quippy mainly to maybe show that he was Tony Starks shadow or his evil twin. Which is a waste given the trailer was so dark that it actually made you fear Ultron as a baddie. Then Ultron is making jokes, lame.
My personal theory is that the title is referring to what the Avengers are trying to stop from happening, not to the actual events of the movie. They're trying to prevent an age of Ultron.
They could've made age of Ultron after infinity war and endgame... Thanos is gone , ironman is gone and there's hardly any avenger left... Hank creates Ultron to protect earth and it gets out of control... Filler until Kang arrives from the future and helps them destroy Ultron....
We still haven't gotten to Antman, this is gonna go on forever. An eternal sh*tshow. Thanks for all the compilation of this series, now to rewatch like 10 times and then watch Antman later
I think a lot of people overlook the significance of this movie, and that it gave us our only true look at the ‘peak Avengers’. It takes place prior to any big infighting, characters leaving for other places, and before any major deaths. It’s our Hero’s at their strongest point. Admittedly, it’s one of my favorite MCU movies, and imo it’s 2nd best to only Infinity War, as far as *Avengers* labeled movies.
I think Joss is too harsh on the final product. However AOU is another example on how the inconsistency of marvel isn’t a recent thing. It’s just been more prominent with the whole quantity over quality issue the last few years.
This franchise didn't hit it's stride until phase 3. Phases 1 and 2 were always all over the place. Everything in 4 and 5 has just felt like it's 1 and 2 again.
I enjoyed the film. The characterization of Ultron was perfect and sympathetic. A Hal-9000 with Tony Stark’s personality that thought it was the hero. I found Ultron’s character more compelling than Thanos as an antagonist. Thanos was a threat from behind and unknowable, Ultron is a reflection of humanity’s cold calculating darker side. And most tragic of all, Ultron wasn’t programmed to understand human emotions and found it impossible to understand why he was in the wrong, something his brother, Vision seems to sympathize with. My biggest disappointment is that Ultron was killed off from the MCU too soon
Meh. Ultron might as well been Strucker, just in a robot suit. He's too human and his origin is rushed. Ultron should be like a neglected child, who grew into a sociopath, who doesn't grasp human emotions and sees humans as cattles ready for slaughter. When he opens his mouth, he doesn't open it to spout one-liners; he does so only to say something that will send chills down your spine. That's why I think it was a bad idea to give Ultron to Stark and why it was a bad idea to not have Hank and Jannete on the origianl team roaster.
@@antona.8659 Agreed. He felt too human in a way that took away from his threat. Sometimes he has a decent line, but most of the time, the movie really wants you to remember his jokey bits more than the threat of him.
The Marvel creative committee consisted of people who were part of Marvel Entertainment and served as an extended arm for the infamous Ike Perlmutter (former president of Marvel Entertainment/ToyBiz). While Marvel was in New York, Marvel Studios operated in Los Angeles so that left Mr Perlmutter to form a committee to keep tabs on what happens on the west coast. They had infamous clashes with Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios and these episodes of creative clashes have been somewhat documented in the book “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios” and “With Great Power” podcast from the WSJ. Usually, these clashes came to budget concerns as Perlmutter has always been described as pragmatic. But in 2015, Bob Iger separated Marvel Studios from the overall Marvel umbrella so that Kevin Feige reported straight to Disney instead of Perlmutter and Feige was eventually promoted to chief creative officer in 2019, which means to some capacity, he’s in charge of the entire Marvel brand. The creative committee hasn’t existed in a long time and AoU was its last movie they were involved in. This also explains why for a long time the Marvel Television shows (AoS, DD, AC, Punisher, JJ, LC, Defenders) felt so distant from the wider MCU canon wise. Because they were technically two separate production studios who weren’t in synchronized contact as the movies were being made. The TV shows were reacting to what was happening in the movie and not the other way around.
@@EvCMickelodeon Considering how messed up Phase 4 & 5, maybe they should build a new one? I understand giving creative decision on directors and writers. But without someone as counterpart, it became overbloated. Sometime we need villains in management, because they can make us re-evaluate our own action. Just like Joker to Batman or Killmonger to Black Panther.
@@brodull1142No, the problem was that the autonomy to make their own choices was taken away when Bob Iger left Disney and Bob Chapek demanded that Marvel increase their output for Disney+. The problem with Phase 4&5 is the exact same as when the committee existed: a detached overseer making and forcing creative decisions on the studio for business reasons regardless of quality.

To this day I will never understand the "Black Widow said she was a monster because she couldn't have kids". I always took it as she was saying she was a monster because she was a assassin and had "so much red in her ledger". She was trying to make Bruce not feel so alone with all of the people he killed during Hulk rampages. Whenever I watch this movie I always pay attention to that scene and see it the same way.
I do think she is referring to herself as a monster because she can't have kids, but that is obviously a flaw in the character which sets about to give her depth, not some moral message that fans should "aspire" to. She thinks of herself as a monster from the beginning BECAUSE of her sterilization, which gives her the wiggle room to slide into the sadistic assassin role.. Now, at the time of that scene, she knows that the murders she committed were wrong, but she still thinks of herself as that same deformed abomination. It's not a critique of women who are unable to have kids, it's a critique of the character that she thinks that way.
@@digitalmonkeytools2925Then perhaps the part of her being unable to have children should have been cut from the script altogether and instead be left open to interpretation. Keep in mind that aside from her memory hallucination with Wanda, her only real arc is to be comfort for Bruce by helping him transform into/revert from the Hulk and became a damsel after Ultron kidnaps her. The fact she had more depth in the first Avengers movie during her confrontation with Loki really speaks volumes about the Perlmutter era of Marvel and his refusal to green-light a BW movie because it wouldn’t sell more toys.

If I ever see Weadon in person I want to let him know that I acknowledge his hard work, he truly made a crucial and important film to the MCU and its Saga
Ultron isn’t a character in his own right. He’s an algorithm based on the brainwaves of his creator. In the comics, that was Hank Pym; a notoriously misanthropic mad scientist who’s a knife-edge away from being a supervillain himself. MCU Ultron is actually very faithful, considering that Pym hasn’t been introduced yet and quipmaster Tony Stark had to create him instead.
I can imagine another movie where Joss’s conception of Black Widow as haunted by her killer past, trying to fix another broken person, and learning she needs to fix herself first would have set her up to have her own movie.
Quick fact check. Age of ultron began filming early 2014 and was released in 2015 while Days of Future Past began filming in 2013 and was released in 2014. So there's a very miniscule chance that 20th century fox heard of, scripted and cast Pietro in Days of Future past a full year before Age of ultron even had a proper script laid out.
Also... In the Pentagon, it was supposed to be Juggernaut who breaks Erik from prison, but later was changed to quicksilver. Maybe Fox knew marvel was going to use Quicksilver in the AoU, then later decide "we can do a better version of Quicksilver"
Some fans of the comics were also a bit disappointed how Ultron was handled as he is among the strongest and longest lasting arch villains in the Marvel Universe. So to have him be introduced and destroyed in one movie might have been something of a downer considering his wide ranging influence he had in the comics.
Us fans of the comics already got used to the MCU botching iconic villains when we saw Iron Man 3 and Thor 2. So not like it was a surprise to see MCU fumble Ultron.
@@ShockwaveFPSStudios agreed, Hank’s relationship with Ultron was so much more deep and complex. Hank considered him his son while Stark considered him just a “thing”.
Personally, I would’ve released Ant-Man after Captain America: the Winter Soldier, so that Ant-Man & Hank would’ve been involved in Age Of Ultron. Since Hank hated the Stark Family in the first Ant-Man movie, I would’ve just had Ultron’s resentment towards Iron Man coming from him being Hank’s boy. Heck I would’ve changed Ultron’s origin in the MCU by having Stark discovered him, and try to activate him until the Scepter wakes Ultron up.
I completely agree. Better than Endgame, in my opinion. Joss mentioned that Age of Ultron was heavily edited down. Would love to see an extended edition one day, but I doubt that ever happens.

For me, Arcane will always be the gold standard on how Corpo should interact with art. Corpo did not enforce any creative restriction on the show runners. They simply were there to make sure about the quality of the product. After the first run, they pull the plug because the story was not it. And after some years, the gave the green light again. But they were not micromanaging like in this video. They are not artists, they should shut the f up then about those matters. If the movie is not good, then say that this or that needs to change, but do not tell the artist how to change it. "This is confusing, I did not understand why we are doing this or that" is the criticism that is worthy, because if you know how to make the film better than the director, then be the frigging director yourself!
Man U absolutely kill it with these in depth breakdowns and looks behind the scenes. It’s not perfect, but I loved age of ultron! The first three phases were legendary! Great video man! 🔥🔥
I am willing to bet the reason "Age of Ultron" doesn't have as many Joss Whedon horror stories is because of Disney's influence and the fact that the MCU was more beloved, compared to the DCEU. So they had an easier time covering it up.
I agree, but he might’ve had PTSD from Ultron and went into the DCEU with an axe to grind? But honestly that’s no excuse… his behavior stemmed from Buffy.
All of this just sounds like a bunch of excuses and MCU glazing to defend what is clearly a man with a lot of problems. He didn’t react a certain way on DC Films because Marvel’s was some how “better” the guy pulled up with an ego and was threatening people’s careers and acting weird the whole time all in hopes to Direct future DCEU films and more specifically a Batgirl Film. If the dude had an ounce of integrity he wouldn’t have taken the project in the first place. Respectfully almost everything about both comments are so off. I can respect Josh Whedon as a director two an extent but bro was horrible because he himself is just like that. He probably just hid it better especially when you consider what happened with n Buffy which was years prior to either films. Bro was just a dxck and I’m glad all the DCEU cast outed him for the weirdo he was.

It’s incredible watching them fight over the two scenes no one remembers arguably the only reason to watch the film is for the party scene which is way too short and just ends with the bad guy walking into the room to literally monologue
IMO, Age of Ultron improves upon the first movie in nearly every way. The cinematography, darker tone, team chemistry, charcater arcs, action, drama, higher stakes. Ultron was a menacing villain. I hope we see him return one day. Super underrated film.
it would be interesting to see a "wheden cut" maybe even part 1 part 2 or broken down into 5 episodes or something with a full long-form ultron arch storyline. (semi-ironically).

19:16 Ultron - an AI with the control of the entire Internet has the dumbest plan and the weakest ideas to kill humanity. That was the greatest uproar of viewers.
Ultron ended up being a pretty disappointing character, the first in a line of MCU villains that have ultimately failed to be coherent and genuinely frightened, i.e. Ronan, Gorr. Ultron makes 'that' AI assessment to eradicate humanity, but it's all one note from then on. No attempts to reason with him. No descent into AI madness. The farm scenes elevate this film from a C to a B.

Even though this movie was Easter egging and teasing a lot of future marvel stuff, at least they did it a bit more subtle compared how the DCAU was so in your face of teasing future stuff in their earlier movies (*cough cough* Batman V Superman)
I can't believe Black Panther and Captain America were introduced so late in the Avengers series. Joss Whedon was right to include Captain Marvel early on. It's sad that his toxic behaviour at work environment led to his not being part of Phase 3. Hope he find redemption soon.

I can't wait to you guys talk about Ant-Man next cause Edgar Wright leaving the project due to "differences in their vision of the film" is the worst decision they have (on the bright side, phase 3 is more creative and diverse and let director/writers have their own voice in each movies, for better or worse).
Phase 4: The Age of Ultron.
Count me in!
We still haven't gotten to Antman, this is gonna go on forever. An eternal sh*tshow. Thanks for all the compilation of this series, now to rewatch like 10 times and then watch Antman later
Just wait until he gets to the DCEU. Every movie was a shitshow in its own way.
@@bluerobin7051That’s not true
Ultron deserved a two part film. Such a big villain deserved so much more imo.
Marvel isn't inconsistent, it's the 'fans' that reset every time something new comes out
I enjoyed the film.
Never thought of vision as being Ultrons brother 😅 but I guess you're actually right when I think it over!
Still peeves me to no end that Stark created Ultron in this universe and not Hank Pym.
But he wasn’t threating.
@@antona.8659 Agreed. He felt too human in a way that took away from his threat. Sometimes he has a decent line, but most of the time, the movie really wants you to remember his jokey bits more than the threat of him.
The Black Widow/Hulk romance legit came out of nowhere

This is pretty good timing as I rewatched Age of Ultron just last night
The fact marvel has a " creative committee " explains alot of the issues marvel n Disney had had with creating quality media at this point
They fired them right before Civil War. Phase 4 was the first phase without them. I think that’s why Fiege let the directors do their own thing.
Most of Phase 3 was made without the committee which is probably why it is the strongest overall phase in the MCU.
i never see people talking about how much of a better looking film it is than the first Avengers.

I agree with you. I don’t understand how people miss that. Not having the emotional tie of children was to make her a better killer/monster.
@@Nobody2989 thank you for breaking this down for the dumb$$ misogynist above. Your doing God's work🙏!
That's exactly what she means. Can't believe this video dredges up this nonsense again. Any excuse to crap on Whedon again.

One thing i noticed re watching Buffy is that there is a S1 episode "I, Robot... You, Jane" which is basically the same plot as Age of Ultron - Willow releases a demon onto the internet and it builds itself a robot body
My favorite trailer of all time was the first age of ultron teaser nothing has topped it
If I ever see Weadon in person I want to let him know that I acknowledge his hard work, he truly made a crucial and important film to the MCU and its Saga
They turned Ultron from Marvel's Skynet/Terminator into a goofy, cybernetic Pinocchio.
I worked on the 2nd Unit crew in South Africa
Yes Joss is a dick lol
Some fans of the comics were also a bit disappointed how Ultron was handled as he is among the strongest and longest lasting arch villains in the Marvel Universe.
So to have him be introduced and destroyed in one movie might have been something of a downer considering his wide ranging influence he had in the comics.
Us fans of the comics already got used to the MCU botching iconic villains when we saw Iron Man 3 and Thor 2. So not like it was a surprise to see MCU fumble Ultron.
And him being Tony’s creation just undermines Hank Pym’s history as the Ant-Man movie didn’t have any importance to Phase 2 in terms of plot.
@@ShockwaveFPSStudios
Or you could just make Hank Pym the main Ant-Man sense he is so much more interesting than Scott Lang anyway.
In my opinion, Age of Ultron is the most underrated MCU movie. I’m very excited to see the breakdown you did on it.
Came here to say the same thing:-)
Yikes
Totally agree!!
I completely agree. Better than Endgame, in my opinion. Joss mentioned that Age of Ultron was heavily edited down. Would love to see an extended edition one day, but I doubt that ever happens.
@404TVfr"Most underrated" doesn't mean "best movie of the MCU that nobody says so", it just means it's the one that is the most written off for what it does have to offer. I'm not sure I'd agree with the statement of it being the most underrated (there are others I think are worth mentioning like IM3), but I do think it is pretty underrated. Messy as it is, there's a lot of things it does that are either very memorable or just fun IMO.
I just wanna thank you for making these videos. I love looking at the behind-the-scenes perspective of my favorite films and why certain decisions were made.
19:35 sure...if you forget everything she did as part of the Red Room and miss the nuance of her thinking that because up until joining the Avengers she's taken life but can't give it, so it's its own kind of existential crisis.
I'm not a fan of Joss, but I'm not a fan of this particular criticism of this scene either.

Pinocchio complex. Underneath the genocidal tendencies, he wants to be as human as possible.

The after-party scene was wonderful and something desperately needed as you so rarely see the Avengers together during peace time.
Embarrassing worldview.
I remember when this came out and everyone was talking about super hero fatigue lmao
Yep. And people would repeat the phrase for years and years despite these movies still making bank.

Bro was just a dxck and I’m glad all the DCEU cast outed him for the weirdo he was.

it would be interesting to see a "wheden cut" maybe even part 1 part 2 or broken down into 5 episodes or something with a full long-form ultron arch storyline. (semi-ironically).

I'd like to add that the film's cinematic release was somewhat controversial in Germany. Disney raised it's rental fee significantly threatening the livelihood of smaller cinemas and leading to higher ticket prices and lower revenue for the cinemas.
