- Ian McShane wasn't necessarily looking to act in an American television series when the call for Deadwood went out, but after taking the job he found it to be one of the most exciting experiences of his career.

There were real talents in Deadwood but Ian McShane absolutely MADE the show
No doubt. I had no idea he was British either. He hid every trace of that accent too
Agreed. Based on McShane's comments about American TV series' I guess we know why he was one of the few Deadwood cast members that DIDN'T make an appearance in JUSTIFIED. The list of main characters that didn't is a lot shorter than the list that did.
him and timothy played off each other brillant
SWEDGIN!!
@@hardcorehunter9438 The guy is what so many are not - an accomplished ACTOR. That you had no idea is testament to his manifold skills. Too many "actors" are doing not much more than playing themselves in various guises.
When Al Swearengen was sick with kidney stones and had the stroke in the second season, you absolutely believed that you were watching someone suffering through that situation.
Great note. I remember genuinely wondering if he was. Another very good show cut before it's time, Sports Night, wrote around one of the main actors actually suffering a stroke, so the character suffered a stroke.
And Jewell dragging that bloody foot!

So true! That show remains a classic…
Al Swarengen was one of the most interesting characters in any show ever. The way he often spoke in soliloquies was so unique and mesmerizing. His transformation into an anti-hero as the show went on was awesome too.
Transformation? He was a drug dealing pimp. Anyway he was good in John Wick.
@@AnnaLVajda the drug dealing pimp we hated in season 1 and rooted for by the end of the series
@@AnnaLVajda Who cared for "the gimp" Jewel, because of sympathy for a family member he had. He also made a point of driving Trixie to make something more of herself as opposed to his opposite number, Tolliver, who had a prettier presentation but was nothing but a murderous sociopath narcissist. Even the whores at the Gem were cared for better than those across the street. He also honestly cared for the reverend whom he put out of his suffering at the end. Al was not a nice person, he did many horrible things, but at the same time he wasn't irredeemable and did a fair bit of things for the good of others which did not benefit him directly. His interactions with Bullock, who was as black and white a personality as you could find on the show were legendary.
and he was always getting sucked off when he dud them
Yes we did get to at least understand the why of his bad behavior and under the crust, he was for the underdog and had a bit of a heart. His ruthless nature was however hard to disregard. When he could have knifed his foe Seth, he had a change of heart as he did not want the child to see it happen.@@theguyfromlilyhammer1392

Exactly. Biggest mistake ever in terms of misplaced priorities
To this day, I still occasionally use:
"I'm suffering a digestive crisis and I'm concentrating on suppressing its expression".
A great quote from Mayor EB Farnum!
EB Farnum's character and the actor who played him were genius! I was sure that at some point Farnum would be the one to take out Hearst after spitting in his face, that was just too low to go unresolved, yet it did because the show was cut short.
😂❤😂
Deadwood was extraordinary, so disappointing that it didnt carry on
I have and will forever feel we were robbed of a fourth season, at a minimum.
Know what you're saying.. but often times it's best when you feel like a story left something unsaid! Either way, great show
Ian McShane makes everything better. He is such a great actor.
I still maintain that Ian McShane’s performance as Al Swearengen is the masterclass pinnacle of acting. Godlike. Thank you, Sir Ian.
Al Swearengen played by Ian McShane is the best character and acting in television history.
And those who doubt that, can suck cock by choice.

The writing for this show was exquisite, and the casting was excellent.
1000 times agree
Al Swearengen is the best character ever portrayed on television, but he was bolstered by a uniformly excellent cast wherein even side characters were more developed than most of television's main characters.

I've once again reached the final episode and just don't want to finish this show, it's so immersive. Ian McShane gets a lot of praise at the centre of the series and rightly so but each and every character is so well crafted. I think one of the standout stars was actually William Sandersons portrayal of E B Farnum and Ray McKinnons heart wrenching arc as the Reverend Henry Weston Smith. HBO are a bunch of cock suckers for cancelling this.
HBO is stupid. They run crap like GOT instead. BWE also needed more seasons.
Cahcksuckas…..WU
I just finished season3 and holy shit i couldnt believe if i had watched it live how pissrd i would have been st that ending. What a boring blue balls ending.. they kill their own whore to pacify Hearst.. AGAIN.. with 100 chinese and 20 gunmen in town on their side. And we never see anything and boom series canceled. Just stupid I could understand hbo seeing season3 and being like wtf even is this show anymore
I still watch the entire Deadwood series start to finish from time to time. Even though I've seen it probably 30 times, I'll pick up on a small detail or two that I previously missed. The extensive dialog written for each character was amazing, with each actor giving a 5 star performance. My favorite series of all time!
Same here. Every now and then, I too rewatch the entire series.
Actually finished my 4th rewatch just about a week ago!
I saw it atleast 3 times before I realized mcall the guy who shot wild Bill was the same actor who killed all them whores. Walcott
Me too. Just rewatched it with a friend, probably my 15th time through...
Nailed it on the head man. There were minute details that I catch each time I watch the series (over and over a dozen times) that just bring the entire show to life even more. Crazy awesome writing, creation, directing, and amazing acting. Seemed to be just a wonderful dynamic with the cast.
I just finished rewatching 😂
One of the greatest lines ever, I still quote it to this day
“Every step, a fucking adventure”

Ian's portrayal of Al really made the show. One of the greatest TV shows I've ever watched with such great storytelling. It was so tight with all character motivations thought out and logical, and everything being believable. It was rarely predictable and stayed mostly clear of cliché. In every respect, "Deadwood" revolved around the Al Swearingen character. A lesser actor might not have pulled it off and made the character almost an addition to everyday speech, but McShane did exactly that. His Swearingen is unforgettable.
I've admired McShane's work since the 1970s; he brings danger, power, and majesty to his every role. Great actor. One of a kind.
For a treat, watch him in "Sexy Beast," with Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone. Hugely underrated movie.
Possibly one of the best shows ever produced. As a writer, I constantly tell fellow writers about the range of characters in that. As well, I'm sure that the quality of it was way too much for some of the suits who could care less about something truly valuable.

For me what made the show, was the play between Al and E.B.

Always been a great actor. Does a truly sinister portrayal of Teddy Bass in sexy beast, arguably overshadowing Ben Kingsley, despite being a smaller role. Top man.
Thanks for these great interviews. Thoughtful- and you really allow your interviewees to speak without interruption. A rare art!
I just realized why this show is so good. Sam Jones has the unique ability to be a huge fan of actors and their work, and though he is a true admirer he doesn't come across as the least bit star struck or overly flattering. His genuine interest in them is first as a human being and second as an artist. I truly believe that if Sam were at a bbq with non celebrities he would interact with them exactly as he is connecting with Ian McShane in this interview.
I truly believe that Sam is the best interviewer ever; he asks questions and let's his guest talk without interrupting them. He LET'S them talk and they open up to him and us . Very underated in my opinion

Ian was in Deadwood. I believe it was like watching the longest film ever for me so I don't know , Deadwood or Seinfeld best TV series ever? I know people love The Sopranos and The Wire also. I remember binge watching Deadwood . I never had HBO and actually rented DVDs from Blockbuster when it came out. At the same time I have never gone back and re-watched it because I am afraid it won't live up to how I felt when I viewed it the first time. Although Ian is great in so many things, I think people who have not watched Deadwood have missed out on one of the greatest acting performances ever. Also that is not to slight the other actors in the series because that was what was so great about Deadwood (besides the writing, the directing, the producing) was the acting and the chemistry. EVERY character was developed and every actor for every character was top notch.
To me, Deadwood is still THE drama series to suggest to people. To say that it's well done and the acting was great would be a severe understatement.
Ian McShane is a truly great actor. Even here, I was a little wary that he might suddenly turn into Al Swearengen......
A great interview. So nice to have an interviewer let an articulate interviewee speak. McShane tells the story so well.

Phenomenal interview! Great job! Ian McShane is one of the best human beings on this planet!
McShane is the most widely ranging talent to ever fill a relatively narrow casting window that I know of. No matter who or what he portrays, I find myself feeling that ‘that’ is who he really is. It’s the damnedest thing really. He’s a masterful talent!
(edit:) ‘Deadwood’ never really ‘ended’. Even with the movie, not returning for a fourth (or more) season, left WAY too many unanswered questions. There was such enthusiasm about the movie after a 13 year hunger for more, that there were too many things needing to come to an end.
Al Swearingen is one of my favorite characters and McShane was a PHENOMENAL actor. He has the best lines, dry hot wit.

The funniest scene in the whole series was when the doctor changed his mind about surgery and told the big guy to stand Swearengen up while Trixie forced the thing in and you have to remember that Swearengen had freshly broken ribs, too. The look on his face during the most painful moment of his life was hysterical. Trying to pass a stone while someone is bear hugging your broken ribs. Haha. It didn't take me long in the first season to realize the guy playing Swearengen is a terrific actor, Ian McShane. (could you have a more Irish/British sounding name? I wonder if its a stage name.)
