Absolute legend. One of the greatest actors of our time (and in the 1800's apparently.) And one of the best shows ever made. It's 2020 and I just binged all 3 seasons the other day for the first time. Deadwood was on my to do list for a while. Then I realised 18 years have passed and I still hadn't gotten round to it.
I wathced the movie too but it felt really watered down and safe. All in all it left me wanting more. That's a good mark to leave.

I just realized why this show is so good. Sam Jones has the unique ability to be a huge fan of actors and their work, and though he is a true admirer he doesn't come across as the least bit star struck or overly flattering. His genuine interest in them is first as a human being and second as an artist. I truly believe that if Sam were at a bbq with non celebrities he would interact with them exactly as he is connecting with Ian McShane in this interview.

Ian was in Deadwood. I believe it was like watching the longest film ever for me so I don't know , Deadwood or Seinfeld best TV series ever? I know people love The Sopranos and The Wire also. I remember binge watching Deadwood . I never had HBO and actually rented DVDs from Blockbuster when it came out. At the same time I have never gone back and re-watched it because I am afraid it won't live up to how I felt when I viewed it the first time. Although Ian is great in so many things, I think people who have not watched Deadwood have missed out on one of the greatest acting performances ever. Also that is not to slight the other actors in the series because that was what was so great about Deadwood (besides the writing, the directing, the producing) was the acting and the chemistry. EVERY character was developed and every actor for every character was top notch.

McShane is the most widely ranging talent to ever fill a relatively narrow casting window that I know of. No matter who or what he portrays, I find myself feeling that ‘that’ is who he really is. It’s the damnedest thing really. He’s a masterful talent!
(edit:) ‘Deadwood’ never really ‘ended’. Even with the movie, not returning for a fourth (or more) season, left WAY too many unanswered questions. There was such enthusiasm about the movie after a 13 year hunger for more, that there were too many things needing to come to an end.

The funniest scene in the whole series was when the doctor changed his mind about surgery and told the big guy to stand Swearengen up while Trixie forced the thing in and you have to remember that Swearengen had freshly broken ribs, too. The look on his face during the most painful moment of his life was hysterical. Trying to pass a stone while someone is bear hugging your broken ribs. Haha. It didn't take me long in the first season to realize the guy playing Swearengen is a terrific actor, Ian McShane. (could you have a more Irish/British sounding name? I wonder if its a stage name.)
