Minecraft Legends does not come naturally. Its odd blending of action, RTS and open world exploration takes time to come together. When it does, though, it delivers some truly unique and memorable strategy scenarios, made more charming and accessible by the brilliant presentation and Minecraft aesthetic.

11:38 “I haven’t properly played Minecraft because I was too old when it came along” might be the saddest comment. I’ve heard Ralph make. I started Minecraft because my kids enjoyed it and maybe if Ralph had kids he would have. As I’ve gotten older I just found it doesn’t matter how old I am. I will play or try things that appeal to me regardless of my age
Aww that’s cute ❤️ I remember playing Minecraft in the old days of no hunger bar. I was really young cause I’m 20 now lol
thats the kinda energy we need in the world
@@RaspyCh Hey! I started playing Minecraft around the same time! We're the same age too
Ralph, you are never too old for Minecraft. Also, this looks like a shit ton of fun, was worried it was going to be bland and lifeless. Glad it's turned out to be a good 'un.
Agree to disagree. I don't see what the fuss is about.
Been playing Minecraft every week for 10 years with friends. We have an entire world we built up, and there's nothing cooler than finding a building you built many years ago and then totally forgot about. And I am way older than Ralph.
@@yrm1594 that's fine, can't exactly make a game that everyone likes
@@garrick3727there's lots of things cooler than that lol

I need to thank you for reminding me about Sacrifice. I played that game when I was 6-7 years old and now as an adult I kept remembering it very vaguely, completely forgetting the name. All I remembered was the color palette and the fact that there was a "hub zone" with portals and some sort of gods. I tried for years to find the game and I couldn't. So thank you for this shoutout.
I still have my copy! It was my first PC game! Couldn't believe he mentioned it.
As someone who played Minecraft back in its alpha state, its crazy to see how far the franchise has come.
Same. I pretty much missed the boat on Minecraft cause I played it in early beta for a while with wand mods, burnt out and moved on. Then a few years later it's the biggest game in the world
Same. I feel like an old fart but man I am happy to see this IP thriving. [not a fan of Notch but the Mojang team is
Yep. I started right after seeing the famous Yogscast video of Lewis showing Simon Minecraft.
Yep
I "found" it in like.. 2014, after which it had already exploded on RUclips and such. - But while I was kind of on the "it's kiddie garbage" side (more so because of other things that were kind of similar but worse), I was glad I found Markiplier, who played it in a very non-serious manner with a series called "Drunk Minecraft", which is exactly what it sounds like. It was him and some friend messing around while drinking, and it's gold. - It's worth watching, even if it might have aged (editing changed a lot), although he still basically does the same kind of thing today with other games like 'Raft' (without the drinks). There are an appropriate 69 episodes, so there ya go. - It's what made me see the fun in the game, and actually games in general again. Even though I played Minecraft a lot more for the creative side, on my own and obsessively. - And that was in my twenties. I'm currently in my mid thirties, waiting for the next big update, and I might jump into it again, if time warrants it. - It has changed so much though...
Brutal Legend had a mixture of combat with larger RTS battles where you had to build an army and use their talents to help you beat your opponent whilst you fight alongside. I get those vibes from Minecraft Legends and hope in some way they can make the PvP competitive with maybe some tournaments around it. Whether they do or don't, it has a lot of potential to be a great addition to the Minecraft franchise.
Came here for brutal legends comments too. I had way more fun with that vs Sacrifice
So sad they took that off gamepass
This is what first came to mind honestly. Love Brutal Legend.
I played it on PS3 when it came out and when I moved over to PC Brutal Legend was one of the First games I bought lmao
Battlezone, Urban Assault, Uprising.
Ahhh! My partner worked on this game, and she was so happy to hear you talk about BBI. I think you're the only reviewer that consistantly mentions BBI instead of Mojang.
She really appreciated it!
tell your partner that the game sucks and will be lucky to be a footnote in a month
@@Trigger200284 I bet you are a pleasant person to be around. /s
@@nogoodgod4915 he's not wrong though. The game is bad and it's already pretty dead. This was a dumb idea on Mojang. Which is saying something since everything Mojang does these days is a dumb idea.
@@Saulbreadman Why fo you say that about Mojang? I'm no fanboy of the company, I just really love minecraft and have been playing it for a decade.
@@nogoodgod4915 Because they are trying to find another lottery winner and their ideas are poorly executed on.
They want to rake in millions/billions without putting in the work and relying solely on the brand name to trick people into giving them cash.
I am quite pleasant to be around, I'm just tired of the lies and laziness in gaming these days. Your GF/wife should be embarrassed that she worked on that.
I went from giving absolutely 0 shits about this to being extremely excited to play this on gamepass when it comes out.
Always loved the mechanics the studio implemented in the homeworld games, I remember you can construct these "collector" ships that basically can grab ships and bring them back and made a massive fleet of them and would just grab enemy ships and take them in lol
This might be the first time I actually try Minecraft. Thanks Skill Up!
Same
To anyone who sees this- why haven’t you tried it yet? I’m really curious tbh, I’m surprised people still haven’t tried it at least once- I couldn’t imagine not having a fun game that most people have and can connect with yk.
I get it’s not for everyone but the sheer amount of moments and communities I’ve met has made my life better in gaming fs. It was a common ground that took off with so many of my different friend groups and something I still come back to even if I’m not talking to most of those people from those years past.
@@D44RK_Iced_Yogs This right here.
I feel that Minecraft is _the game_ closest to the idea of a game that "does everything". It can be casual or competitive, rigid or creative, a huge world or an A-B adventure... And that's all before one even considers the ability to mod the game, too!
Yeah, looks worth a try.
@@D44RK_Iced_Yogs it has 0 appeal to me and I'm into solo games. The "pixel/block" look doesn't resonate with me and I don't find it interesting either. Never player any Minecraft game or spin-off
every time I go back to a game I used to play as a kid I find myself surprised at how good I must have been at all kinds of genres.
You'd be surprised by how much children are capable of when it comes to video games.
Right? All I need to do is think about how I used to play and beat The Legend of Zelda games when I was a kid. Kids are not as stupid as people think. Or at least, I hope they aren’t in this day and age.
@xinf3ctdx I had the same comment on a different reviewer. Reviewers seems to think kids aren't capable of complex puzzle solving but it's just not true.
One of my favorite games as a kid was Battle for Middle Earth 2, I spent so much time trying to challenge myself in absurd ways in that game.
Bottom line, kids have time and enthusiasm. They can figure it out.
kids these days are extremely good even at really young ages. These kids have grown up playing competitive games with ranks and stats on the line, I've seen 8 year olds clear out entire FPS lobbies.
@@XrayTheMyth23 And it’s not really exclusive to just video games,in general a lot of kids could be good at different things at extremely young ages
To be honest this was one of my anticipated games this year. Mostly because I can convince my daughter to play it with me and I can tell that this one had meat on its bones.
Have fun with your daughter i hope you 2 enjoy it
i wish u were my dad
I hope to have a relationship like this with my kids one day
It is incredibly wholesome seeing the amount of parent gamers here. Warms my heart to know that as my generation and the ones to come will have someone to experience this wonderful artwork with.
Minecraft dungeons is actually a great game especially when playing with your children. I remember having in depth conversations with my daughter discussing gear rarity build crafting and inventory management. We would get up and reply dungeons on harder difficulties and we both had a freaking blast playing it. Can’t wait for her to get into Diablo 😁
My Dad and I back in the day also played a trashed on dungeon crawler and had a great time.
Looking back it was terrible, but the memories and time spent together was great.
“Kids might need their parents help”
Look, if 6 year old me can work out how the monkeys work on the “Can’t Wait to be King” level on The Lion King game, then no kid should have any problem playing Minecraft Legends.
Ngl I’m really just waiting for that Jedi: Survivor review
I'm calling it: "if you liked the first one you'll probably like this"
Which of course means I shouldn't play it but I probably will

It's Brütal Legend but Minecraft would have explained it somewhat :D
You had me when you drew the comparison to sacrifice. That game was absolutely incredible. Loved battling back and forth for souls. Gave real back and forth to combat
Very curious about the co-op. Sounds like it might be neat!
On the topic of RTS games with a first person option you may want to take a look at Machines by Acclaim. Very old and obscure pc game but sort of a hidden gem. You control armies of robots but can play as any one of them from first person.
Want a PvP tip? When you're about to battle someone you can target them the same way you target building by hovering over them and holding down on "Focus Target". They'll be highlighted in a red tone if they're targeted and your troops will never stop chasing/hitting them until they are finished.
I never lose a battle this way since rallied troops only attack a target near them. So they're troops are attacking my troops that are attacking their character. Once their character is down you can finish off their troops making them need to waste more materials to summon troops.
Interesting! It kind of looks like a Pikmin RTS with Hack & Slash elements.
Honestly surprised Pikmin wasn't used as a comparison, especially during the section of the video describing the way you command your units.
Your reviews have led me to experience some amazing games that I never would've touched, thank you for your service
My wife and I loved Minecraft dungeons. It's the game that got her into playing video games. I'm very excited to play this with her!
14:27 Have you never experienced the marvelous joy that is Battalion Wars on the GC?
Had no idea what this game was even supposed to be until watching this review, like you already said was the case for plenty of people. Absolutely going to be giving it a shot when it comes out. Thank you for the video~
I am so glad this is being seen as good. I’ve been very excited for this game since I saw it, more the concept and the unique gameplay as an rts
This review made me feel super reminiscent of games like Kingdom Under Fire and it's sad we don't get more of the action strategy games. Great review as always!
Kingdom Under Fire! Now there's a name I've not heard in over 20 years...
If this is how Blackbird flexes their strategy muscles with something so tonally different, then I'm very hopeful for Homeworld 3.
Also Sacrifice gang rise up
That entire mechanic of drawing troops to a specific spot gives me a Tooth and Tail vibe.
As soon as you told me that Blackbird made this it was all I needed to know.
I'm so glad you put out a review for this, I'm definitely going to pick this up when I get the chance!
OMG I had forgotten about Sacrifice! That was an amazing game!
As soon as he talked about the basic game at the start I thought of sacrifice. When he literally namechecked this went to the top of my current list to try.
So cool to hear someone talk about Sacrifice! Such a cool game- I played the hell out of the PC Powerplay demo I got as a youth!
I had no idea what Minecraft Legends was after all the trailers. This looks like a lot of fun.
Kinda pumped for this now. It's got a lot of brutal legend vibes the moment I seen the crowd control gameplay.
Age of empires 2 on console is also very controller friendly. Honestly amazing stuff that all rts games should include when they have controller support
It's great to see these "gems" coming our way this year. Feels like more of them and more frequently than the last 3-4 years. Cheers to hoping this trend continues! Appreciate you work as always.
Weeelp, sounds perfect. Been wanting a more kinetic rts. Got bored in Lost Eidolons recently but still had that rts itch
"Too old". Dude in his late thirties still playing Minecraft over here ✋🏽😂
This is one of the games I've had a good feeling about ever since it was announced. I'm glad I was right, can't wait to play this!
This sounds like exactly the kind of exactly the kind of game I have wanted for so long! A Pikmin RTS.
I genuinely was not expecting this news, wow
I thought we would see other nether forces aswell. It would have been cool to see piglins riding ghasts or having to use striders to get you and your troops across lava.
moment you mentioned they had made shipbreaker and deserts of kharak, i bought it
Minecraft is by far my most played game with well over 5000 hours (don’t worry I play plenty of other good games) yet I never liked dungeons at all. Will likely pick this up. Thanks Ralph for a great informative review as always.
No, you don't. You play Minecraft.
@@michaelmonstar4276 minecraft is a good game. And my favourite games are Witcher 3, no man’s sky, Hades, metal gear solid 3 and uncharted 2, so I think I do
I see others in the comments mentioning Brutal Legend and Pikmin, but I'd like to recommend Overlord II for this type of game. Overlord is also good, but I recommend Overlord II even more and you don't need to have played the first game to enjoy the second.
Thank you for your review. I’ll try it when it’s out. It’s great that some developers continue to try something different and not churning out “remasters” of five year old games
I've definitely been talked into trying in now. Thanks for the video
if mods and custom content can be made for this game, this is gonna be nuts
I had no idea blackbird was even working on this! The dev alone make this a game I'm gonna automatically check out.
Battlezone released in 1998 was a super fun RTS/Action game.
Best part of the review was hearing that the Homeworld 3 demo was great, I can’t wait for that to come out!!!
Man, every time someone talks about RTS games where you're a unit yourself, joining the battles and contributing, they never remember Battlezone and Battlezone II: Combat Commander. Absolute treasures of the late 90's, that to this day still have cult classic followings.
Mate I was hoping for just a strategy game but your comparison to Sacrifice, bruh loved that game, definitely getting this one
I heard the magic words "no battlepass", so I'm on board now
Happy to see that there is some people that still remember Brütal Legend. What a blast of a game.
Thank you!! I'm always excited when you review a game, especially one I've been looking forward to. I like how thorough you are with your reviews and you breakdown the game section by section. Glad you enjoyed it, and am now looking forward to enjoying this myself!
Honestly had this written off before this video. But you had me convinced when you said Blackbird Interactive. I've enjoyed everything they made in the last few years.
it’s crazy that we need game like this i’m mainly an fps player for 10+ years and for the past 2 years i haven’t had the urge to play cod (still play it a good amount but feels boring most times)or any other shooter seems to give me that kick anymore but it’s gems like this that keep me playing games in general just an amazing hobby imo. valhiem is the best game i’ve played in a while and just came to xbox recently. that was amazing imo can’t wait for updates
"If you were a kid back then, you're probably 20" - damn, really making me existential
Wow this looks great. 3rd person RTS is a great idea
Respect to Blackbird for nailing this. What an awesome studio with a prestigious portfolio!
One of the sleeper best indie studios right now no doubt.
Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3 Homeworld 3
When, damn it? Homeworld 1 is still one of my favorite games and experiences-cooperatively with dorm mates staring at one PC monitor-of all gaming.
I was doing the dishes when I heard you mention SACRIFICE. That game was one of the first games I've ever played on pc. I knew no English and jad no clue what was going on as I was a kid... Through repetition I manage to learn some pf the controls and got into it. I never heard anyone else playing it so Im just glad that there was someone else out there that remembered it.
[14:00] Skill Up never played the Spellforce series. RTS game that can be played over the shoulder 3rd person (first 2 games anyway).
I was only halfway engaged with the video until you mentioned Sacrifice. You had my curiosity, but NOW you have my attention.
Played this for the first time with my son, we played for 4 hours straight. Him on his series s in his bedroom, me on my laptop in the living room. Strategizing in Xbox party. Had a blast
That moment the food is so good, you have to stop and read the ingredients
Looks like I'll be picking this up to play with my lil ones. They are super excited to play! Great review as always
Really enjoyed scanning through all these comments to see what "RTS from third or first person" videogames people would mention.
Most of what I was going to mention has been already, with a small exception: "Parkan: Iron Strategy"
Everyone seems quite passionate about their games, and I was glad to see someone else remembered Machines (1999), although the FPS toggle in that game is more of a gimmick.
Dark Reign 2, Battlezone, there were a couple other early 3D rts that had a battlefield POV
Been playing Minecraft on and off for over a decade now... this does look amazing to me.
I’ve been interested in this since the start so I’m getting it anyway.
Excited for the Jedi: Survivor review in two weeks (?)
This is the sort of review that I love on your channel, where genre lines and game design must be characterized accurately to see and appreciate the secret sauce. (I therefore truly wonder why Exoprimal received so much reserve from you since a lot of this sort of genre bending analysis is key to understanding why Exoprimal is so dang fun and thrilling, I hope that game does very well)
This seems like a really creative (and creativity-driven) strategy game. Thanks for putting so much effort into communicating what makes it unique!
Thanks for checking this out. The RTS and RTS-like genre doesn't get as much attention as it used to. I got gamepass but I might just pick this up instead.
A Minecraft Strategy game is something I have wanted ever since I started playing strategy games. Hearing you say that this game will be worth the buy, makes me beyond happy!
Wasn't planning on it because of all the technical problems I had with Minecraft Dungeons (system crashes & save data loss), but after this review, went ahead and pre-ordered Minecraft Legends for the PS4/PS5. The deluxe edition with 20% PS+ discount is same price as standard edition.
I literally thought Minecraft Legends was an add-on or DLC to Minecraft: Dungeons. I’m soooo glad I was not the only one who thought that. Thanks FPS podcast for making me feel NOT dumb.
the first game I played with that type of gameplay is the old game Sacrifice. One of my all time favs. Wish it gets remastered or have a sequel.
Battlezone had this RTS / action first person view. Really cool game.
I highly recommend checking out Kingdom Under Fire. That series had a really cool take on the third person RTS.
Mentioning Sacrifice in a video is an instantaneous like for me.
I'm thrilled to hear this. I love 3rd person strategy games & hybrid strategy games.
Brutal Legend being one of my favorites.
I wish we got more games in thus genre.
OVERLORD
@@michaelmonstar4276 Overlord was good too but it's sequel was where that game reached its potential.
I just like Brutal Legend more.
Anybody remember brutal legend? When the big battles played like this I was really blown back. It was awesome
Thought this would not happen but: I WANT TO PLAY A MINECRAFT GAME.
So happy seeing a company take risks, especially one as big as Minecraft. They literally didn't need to and still tried to do this.
Blackbird is one of the top canadian studios btw. Them combined with Relic and Canada is like the world leader in strategy games.
Interesting to see the reviews thus far. Most people have it at 7/10, basically saying it's baby's first RPG but lacking in the depth necessary to keep players around.
I remember having a Sacrifice game poster on my wall for ages in the early 2000s.
Looks to me like the creators of this game have fond memories of Battlezone 2 like I do lol. I loved me some Battlezone 2 back in the day!
I immediately added this to my game pass downloads after watching this
Reminds me of Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War which was a RTS that let you take over your factions hero in first person.
Awesome I might give this a shot. Wouldn't ever have considered it otherwise. One thing I like about your reviews is that I feel like you're not overly influenced by other reviews. You speak your opinion and often that's different from what a lot of people think, but without coming of as being contrarian for the sake of it
Love the shout out to Sacrifice. Great game.
This always reminded me of Kingdom Under Fire. Anyone else remember that one on the OG XBOX (and now Steam)?
Loved the review! Thanks for giving this one a try. You mentioned that you had never really played MC. You're a level 10 gamer Ralph, and you owe it to yourself to check out the Modded Minecraft scene on the PC. It is ridiculously fun and a good modpack well blow your mind with how much quality content is there. Especially with a buddy who can help show you the ropes. You wouldn't regret it!
