For the love of all that is Holy, Mojang needs to stop wasting resources on spin-offs, and take all those mobs, blocks and features they poured into Legends & Dungeons, and put them in Vanilla Minecraft, where they belong.

      @Dhalin 5 месяцев назад +44

Yeah, some actual new content in the base game would be nice (outside of critters that have no purpose in the world). Also, how about updating Java to be more in line with Bedrock? I tried Bedrock a few days ago, and the UI is way better, it's animated, it looks cleaner, and there's several little tweaks in Bedrock that I wished were in Java. Heck, they know there's a HUGE modding scene for Minecraft, they should do what Starbound did and embrace it instead of forcing Java players to use an outdated client that's missing a lot of features. Oh, but that'd cut into their Minecraft Store profits... who am I kidding? /eyeroll

@@DhalinI don't like Bedrock's UI (at least when compared to Java's), it's really slow even when you disable animations.
Java's UI fits in more with a PC interface too, those big buttons are pretty annoying on large screens that are close to you.
I always use the lowest GUI scale in Bedrock and it's still too big!
They need to add a UI that lets you toggle between a "console/desktop" mode and a "mobile" mode. Or just add more numbers to the scale slider.
Bedrock also has a mix of new UI (unthemeable with texture packs btw) and the normal UI, which is really weird.

The thing is, if Mojang wants to do a spin off game, they have to make something a little more like actual Minecraft and less like a lukewarm game that really doesn't benefit from being set in the minecraft world.

It'd be really cool if they could partner with 4J to bring back the minigames from console edition. You know, the minigames like battle, tumble, and glide. They could even expand on the minigames if they want to by adding more minigames and maps. I know 4J is already working on a game like that but I'm sure 4J would appreciate the help from Mojang developers.

NGL, I do think a Tetris and Minecraft crossover spinoff would actually be quite interesting, but it also needs a reason, in which I think such a game needs to fuse the mechanics of Minecraft and Tetris such as the Tetrominos randomly changing block types, depending on the level and you get random special block Monominos such as TNT or Pistons, so you get an experience that's a freshener of regular Tetris. It should also have game modes such as Classic Tetris, in case you want the real thing with the iconic colors consistently in the Tetrominos.
It may not last long but it's not too difficult to put replay value in a puzzle game that is known to be well designed.

The concept of allays gathering and building stuff for you is interesting - in vanilla Minecraft, they're kinda pointless compared to hopper minecarts. Not sure if that would be a good idea to add to vanilla survival, but maybe it would make sense for adventure maps and the like? Or maybe it's fine because players already build absurdly efficient farms for everything anyway.

It shows in the retained players too… 363 vs 24 players within 24-hour peak on Steam comparing Dungeons and Legends respectively… and honestly Minecraft Dungeons would still have quite a bit more players if they simply worked on the game more instead of the life-support type of content they have been doing.

Legends was an interesting experiment as being a hybrid rts/action slasher. But the gameplay was shallow on both fronts, with not having much control of your troops and not having that many combat abilities yourself. I think that Minecraft Legends might have done better if they had modeled the gameplay closer to something like Age of Empires and StarCraft but with Minecraft graphics, themes, lore, etc. There’s actually a lot of gameplay overlap with these kinds of games and Minecraft both being about resource gathering, building, advancing through a tech tree, fighting battles, etc, but once you put the player in the game as a “participant” in the battle then you seriously limit the amount of influence you have over what can take place. So instead of managing and controlling an entire army over the entire map, you end up micromanaging what is on your screen. To me, that removes a lot of the gameplay depth that makes real time strategy games enjoyable.

Legends was a game I didn't really think of much, I saw the first trailer, forgot about it entirely until youtubers started talking about it near release. Ended up trying the game, right away I saw the marketplace, which I'm really not fan of, if this was a f2p game sure, but instantly on the main screen not happy about it. The first 30min of the game was pretty fun, but the rest after got very boring for me. The multiplayer I never tried out, it just doesn't appeal to me. I might try the game out eventually again since it's recieved a few updates, but not anytime soon.
On a side note, my brother really liked this game. I gave him a copy of Minecraft Dungeons after he got done with Legends on the hardest difficulity and he prefered Dungeons right away in terms of amount of content/replay value. Not trying to make a point, just thought that was kind of funny.

dungeons layout changes each time you enter (in the fist one the map rotates and gets paths that lead off 90% of the time to nothing)
open world (small but able to travel to different places and gaining access to new areas after completing dungeons
pvp aspect able to place down camp anywhere in the open world area
better skin/character customization/ all items/stats and season progress carries over (you can chose to start a new playthrough )
transfer items form main play though to new
    day/night cycle even at camp
guilds form 8--12 players (pvp battle mode defend and attack)
able to build and place defenses in and out of camp (auto arrow dispense tower)

The problem with Minecraft spinoffs is that Microsoft always expect by slapping Minecraft label would work 100%. There’s reason why some game companies have diverse spinoff so they could have diversified fanbase, but relying only on Minecraft would result only having Minecraft fanbase as a whole.
Another problem with Legends is that RTS is heavily competitive PVP game and Mojang IGNORES it for the sake of “hyper casual kid-friendly games”. Resulting the game unable to compete and loses its importance to keep updated.

I think that mojang studios as a brand alone is enough to sell games, the studio name shows up every time you boot Minecraft after all, however I think by making it a spin off and directly associating it with Minecraft it can set people’s expectations on what the game is actually going to be and what it’ll play like especially when there is so little gameplay in the trailers. But making it a new brand means it’s not held down by the expectations of players and if they really need to include Minecraft they can have a Minecraft mini side story as a bonus rather than the whole story being about Minecraft.

Seems like Microsoft could have saved a lot of time, energy, and headaches by just releasing Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 for the Xbox, because it’s essentially what they tried and failed to create with this game. All I can do is shake my head. I actually stopped playing Minecraft because it became playing became equivalent to a homework assignment to accomplish anything in the game. I guess they had to evolve to appeal to a new type of player, and I’m ok with that; however I could no longer enjoy playing the game, and nostalgia wasn’t enough to keep me around anymore. Moved on to new games and new adventures.

Variety of reasons as to why I expected this game to fail but the biggest is prob the disappointment players had in both recent updates in the main game and also how they never finished minecraft dungeons and then sold the other half as DLC.

What people don't realize, is that people liked Minecraft because at the time, it was a unique and revolutionary game. It was a fully 3D game that allowed you to fully manipulate your environment any way you pleased, block-by-block and I can't think of any other game (at the time) that allowed you to do this. Even when Terraria came out soon afterwards, it was 2D which set it apart from Minecraft. Also, Terraria went towards more content than just giving you an empty sandbox but that's a separate rant of mine. Anywho, its popularity blew up, and once something gets popular, it tends to STAY popular, because it already has an established playerbase. Most games that tried to do similar, got tagged as a "Minecraft Ripoff" and heck even Terraria had been called that a few times, but most people know that's not true because the two games have entirely different foci.
Now, fast-forward a bunch of years later, and Microsoft/Mojang decides they're not making enough money from the sales of the base game alone, so how do they fix that? They try merch which works somewhat, they try some in-game purchases, but did you see what happened during the last 5 years with MTX in games? They became _wildly_ unpopular, the EU put heavy restrictions on lootboxes, Day One DLCs are mocked by the majority of playerbases, and people are just DONE with MTX in games. NFT games didn't fare any better, they actually did worse, and those are mocked even more. So how do you make more money?
You make another game. But, how do you make a "Minecraft 2"? You don't, not really. Anything you try to do with a Minecraft 2, people will go "but why not just add that stuff to Minecraft?"
And so, Spinoff games were their answer. But... wait. These spinoff games are basically the same thing as other games they are based off of, only with a Minecraft skin, and... one thing that Minecraft _doesn't_ have, is good graphics. Oh, people will tell you there's a "charm" in Minecraft graphics, but I always saw it as a limitation. Minecraft is blocky because, well, the world is made up of blocks. That's how you can manipulate the world's terrain so easily. Even Terraria uses blocks, though it can get away with more because it's a 2D environment instead of a 3D one. It's easier to do in 2D. Nobody goes "oh, Minecraft has such awesome graphics because it's made up of blocks!" ... so taking a game, like League of Legends and slapping Minecraft blocks ontop of it was always going to be some gimmicky thing. If you wanted LoL, then you'd just _play_ LoL. If you liked the aesthetics of Minecraft _that_ much, then you'd just..... play Minecraft?
Especially when they wanted to charge money and make these things online-only. Heck, I tried out Bedrock for the first time a couple days ago and you wanna know what I noticed immediately? You can't pause in Bedrock. Even when you have the closest thing to "solo" enabled. No players can enter your world, but yet you still can't PAUSE the game. For all the neat little UI upgrades and other little things they changed in Bedrock, the first thing I noticed is that I can't play truly solo and offline. And indeed, there's a lot of players who hate that "online only" thing that a lot of games are doing anymore.
But anyhow, that's why these games fail. They are gimmicky and they are lacking depth, and at the end of the day they end up just being clones of existing games banking on the Minecraft brand without delivering any kind of unique experience.

Minecraft is still doing phenomenal in terms of sales, since you see it on basically every single top ___ sales chart on consoles. But Mojang and Microsoft seemingly agreed that they could grow the franchise with new games. And as you said, these spinoffs are very shallow/gimmicky and lose players fairly easily. On the bright side, Mojang got a new CEO at the end of last year and they could potentially make changes to the spinoff teams.

Haven't played it. I have watched a couple play throughs... But the game mechanics don't make any sense to me as I see them. Almost as if people who really didn't have any hand in developing the core game were given artistic liberties with every Lore worthy aspect of the universe. Why are the hostile mobs friendly with everyone? Why do Skeletons have noses and helmets? What is the deal with the negligent hosts? Prismarine? *shrug*
    Weird. Just weird.

Like I feel like being able to upgrade the units from iron, gold, to diamond tiers really would of helped. Additionally, with there only being one faction to choose from there wasn't too many ways to keep things fresh.

What happened is a lesson for Microsoft. That if they're going to make a new game, they have to make it right, in order for the game to be well-received, it has to be done well, without bugs and without things that will turn players off, such as microtransactions, or the Marketplace. Minecraft Dungeons survived for 3 years because the game was much better organized. Minecraft legends had a lot of Paid Stuff and bugs at launch, but the game was also poorly balanced. The tutorial was way too long. The game, was just bad...

my entire playthrough of ledgends consisted of
    doing tutorial
getting in game, running to the first village for 5 minutes
    doing battle and combat
    building
getting told to go to another entire village
    running
getting bored and quitting then and there
i did not enjoy legends, it was bland and stale and wasn't satisfying enough for me to run to the next village just to do very little in terms of doing things
i knew legends was gonna be a flop anyways, the previews and things they showed us up until launch looked boring as hell
their multiplayer showcase during minecraft live was one such instance of just doing the same motions over and over again but with more people to speed up the repetitive process of throwing troops into the battle
even through their faces they were getting bored of the gameplay
i found it hard to stay awake (to be fair it was at like 3am)
i wish mojang rather than focus on their spinoff titles they just focus on making the game better rather than splitting their money and rescources to random projects that are built for a small fortune in quick bursts while leaving the community super dissapointed in both mojang and the games
minecraft is falling into a pit with these horrible updates as of recent and blatantly ignoring their community
the fact minecraft legends is closing now is a showcase to why mojang needs to stop making spinoffs which try to make a unique gameplay but with repetitive gameplay
at least with minecraft dungeons the mechanics and the combat was fluent enough that the game was fun to play

Just seeing the gameplay, it feels a bit less like "real time strategy in Minecraft" and more "random tactics game with the odd building mechanic that has a minecraft skin". If they wanted to do something more Minecraft-like, I feel them just copying the old Settlers game (Either Settlers 2 with its pathway systems, or Settlers 3/4 without).
As that series is about gathering resources, refining resources, using multiple jobs to expand your village and options, and defeat enemies in somewhat light form of combat. Making the building a bit more free-form and expanding it, and it would've been a good fit for a hands-off-version of Minecraft.
Heck, Settlers 4 even had an enemy-exclusive faction that had a form of terrain-infection that could be immitated by making it Nether-themed.
