Great Review! The game has been fun for me, performance not withstanding. I found a thread that helped me get pretty decent performance. Gonna post the tips here in case you’re playing in PC:
“disabled fullscreen optimizations and application scaling on the exe
    - used both nvidia control panel and in game 60 fps limiters in tandem. Usually I'd assume this would be bad but nvidia lower than in game had framepacing issues. Didn't cap below 60 unless I went to 30 as it would introduce big periodic framepacing issues.
    - in game vsync
    - borderless (I'd assume borderless would just use wdm vsync but I guess they override that behavior).
    - used process lasso's bitsum highest performance profile. I'd have thought this would be the big deal but just by itself I was still having some issues”
Hopefully this helps someone until they get a patch in.

This is where Monster Hunter hasn't really had any competition so there hasn't been really any massive innovations and any competitive games developed have only really copied Monster Hunters formula with varying success (God Eater coming to mind) this is a company that seen the formula and attempted to build onto it and make something their own, and I truly believe this is something that Capcom had to take notice of. Minus the performance issues and limited budget KOEI TECMO managed to make a compelling Monster Hunter competitor and with love and time for the game (and hopefully a future franchise) could see both Monster Hunter and Wild Hearts both benefit from some much-needed competition that will drive innovation in both titles. I can imagine Capcom developers taking note and rightfully so and should do so.

Thanks for the warning on performance. I think what ultimately will have me take another look is if they add good post-live content like Monster Hunter does/did. I think this live service content releases of Monster Hunter World in particular is a blind spot for many reviewers for the MH series. But ultimately it is the lifeblood of the game - the Iceborne endgame content was amazing. Doing Kulve Taroth, Alatreon and Fatalis on release was just an amazing experience with the community. This makes me realize how good we have it with Monster Hunter via Capcom. DLCs were full expansions, and gave us multiple content waves like a live service game but without season passes to pay for and excessive P2W microtransactions.
I'm concerned that the combat style with buildings (while faster paced) doesn't allow for deeper gameplay and hope to see them design boss encounters more complicated that build a barrier / flashbang and abuse the opening you created with limited weapon movesets. The monster designs look amazing aesthetically, but I'm definitely hoping some more combat mechanics are added per weapon as well.

    I played MH since MH1 in PS2.
That combat is slow and MH1 came out even before Demon Souls and Dark Souls exist.
The reason MH hooked me because they take immersive gameplay approach.
You go into wilderness, learning and surviving the harsh environment, learning monster behaviour, hunt them for food, gathering resource for making trap, bomb, net for hunting purpose, make item to survive environmental hazard. And when you swing the big sword, it feel heavy, slow and take a lot stamina, but when it hit the monster, it feel very satisfying.
For modern gamer, all of that is just a hassle and chore to them, but for old gamer and boomer like me, it's what make monster hunting game, a hunting game compared to any Action game.
Some of that aspect is what missing in Wild Hearts.
Although they nailed in big monster combat and traversal aspect, they missing the survival aspect or very trivialize.
So I'm a bit mixed feeling here

    • @starryeyes5860
      @starryeyes5860 Год назад +1

not really. the immersion in wild hearts is great. you get to build your own camps, process food with dry racks, then season them in pickle jars, and then throw them in the smoker. you can explore the environments and hunt for food or to find tsumoko, talismans, or documents that are filled with lore. you can find run down houses and set up a camp inside of it. the maps are much more open than MH and you actually feel like your a hunter that belongs in the wilderness and your not reliant on the town to provide you with your meals or anything else for that matter. you can even add decorations, animal cages or pens that provide you with rare materials or food ingredients and a lot more. much more to wild hearts than just the great combat and traversal.

The ecology and natural world building of that franchise through pure design and behaviors alone is pretty impressive and as a zoologist it's something I really enjoy and can't help but miss in this game. Like yeah the giant pig is cool, but like I have a feeling I will enjoy the monsters less in the game the more I fight them because they don't seem to have as much depth to their designs. The word for the monster hunter combat i would prefer to "clunky" is "methodical". You need to get into the Monster's moveset relative to your weapon to know how deep in you can go. + How good you are with possible iFrames, blocks and counters of your weapon. I find this really satisfying and strategic. But i can also see the appeal of WH. If you build your game more around animation canceling, combat must become faster and frentic.
Maybe i give it a look once it performs well, but then again, this years gaming releases are relentless. I guess games need to release in topnotch condition or they won't stick.

I completely disagree with the comment about art direction, wild hearts may have a similar graphical style to monster hunter world but that's not what art direction is, art direction is about stylization, and visual choices that have nothing to do with graphical fidelity, wild hearts has a *very* different art direction then monster hunter, monster hunter has a very unique way of designing their monsters and locales that make them stand out from other games, while wild hearts has also done a good job making very unique monsters and locales it's in a very different way then monster hunter, here art direction would be talking about how they fuse nature and beast to make monster designs, that isn't anything like what monster hunter does, i do like and agree with most things in the video though the misuse of the term art direction just kinda bugged me.

Honest opinion from a Monster Hunter veteran, after playing the early access for 10 hours on Xbox series X (this applies to PS5):
1- The game is in a disastrous technical state. In performance mode, this is one of the worst looking games to come out in recent memory. Textures are extremely muddy, blurry, antialiasing is non existent. Elden Ring, Monster Hunter World/Rise, Rdr2, Hogwarts Legacy, all look AMAZING on series X even in performance mode, there is no excuse for the game to look this bad. Graphics mode is borderline unplayable. I had no issue playing Rise at 30fps on switch, but wildhearts is different. Multiplayer is even worse. The game struggles to stay alive with 3 hunters on screen, unplayable. They are going to need at least 6 months of HEAVY patching to fix this mess. They are definitely not going to fix it for launch.
2-Gameplay/Combat. This has great potential, but again it’s disappointing. It’s held back by the game's technical performance, but also has some design flaws. Weapons are cool, feel different, have interesting mechanics and combos, but nowhere near the level of depth I was hoping for. Compared to Monster Hunter, it isn’t even close… I’m ok with the floaty feeling combat, and I really enjoy the big combos, but I feel like the weapons are just too simplistic.
Monster AI is really janky, hitboxes are all over the place, and the camera is a nightmare. It gets stuck on everything. The building mechanic is really cool, even though it still feels a bit stiff. Highlight of the game for me. Monster design is good, unique and interesting, but held back by the ai. In summary, the word that fits this game's combat best is Jank. Switching from Wildhearts to Monster Hunter Rise is just incredible. It just makes me appreciate even more how much effort and experience goes into making a modern hunting game.
3- Story is decent (way better than MH games), and there’s a lot of great QOL stuff that I hope the MH devs pay attention to. The base building mechanic is awesome, the maps are large and I’m sure would be gorgeous running on a 4090, the game is CROSSPLATFORM and jumping into multiplayer is really easy. There is great build variety and lots of options to experiment.
In conclusion: Don’t buy this game. Not yet at least. Wait for them to address the huge technical issues, and for the game to go on sale. Wildhearts has huge potential, but I can’t recommend it right now, especially not if you're a Monster Hunter veteran. DO NOT trust any of the big channels recommending this, remember they have a vested interest in getting people playing as it will generate more views and income.

I heard it runs the worst on Series S...makes sense its basically a last gen console(even though this game could probably have been ported to last gen at 30 fps, the karakuri and level exploration are the only thing making it possibly more demanding than MHW)
I've heard of some probems on Series X as well.
I played 10 hours on PS5 and am going to get my copy right now. I was a few hours into the second zone. I had very few frame dips stutters. After the update that screwed everyone with the trial. The game would crash occasionally, but would literally load me back into the middle of a hunt.
Obviously it doesn't look as good as someone with a i9-13900k and 4090...but it was good to play on performance.
We need to fix that CPU bottleneck and we need DLSS. Like SU said I dont think its gonna be fixed that quick in the sense that the game is demanding for some reason and perhaps the bottleneck fix will make it playable for the majority of people with mid range (20 series cards at this point) and DLSS should allow older GPUs and other cards to at least get 60 fps at 1080p.
There was no difference for me on high or low settings FPS wise...even going from 1440p to 1080p. That tells me the game is bottlenecking somewhere else.

I've been seeing Reddit posts and articles defending developers graphical design strategies which really boil down to a "get rich, buy better hardware" TLDR. Hardware will ALWAYS be ahead of what is actually produced on-screen. Look no further than TV's we can buy. You can buy an 8K TV - ok? Tell me what streaming services and TV producers that are pushing that? None. We've had 4K TV's for damn near 10 years+, and 4K TV / streaming is really just now becoming available. Back to the game. If a game looks like it was maybe from 2013-2014 and runs like complete shit on a good system - the 2080Ti system Skill Up has - that's a complete failure by the design team to optimize their game, period. I'd argue they need to begin a recall like an automaker would. FFS, imagine if a brand new car ran something akin to this. Woof.

  • @ckwi2245
    @ckwi2245 Год назад +4

As someone who has been playing it and is effectively in "High Rank", I would say the biggest component to the "increased difficulty" feeling is how late in the animation a monster can change it's direction. Kemono in Wild Hearts track the players HARD, you almost have to rely on I-Frames and Karakuri to really prevent damage. This issue compounds how hard the monsters hit, how often they hit, and how little ability you have to build defense. So in the end you stack "exacting defense" + "hard hits" + "rapid hits" + "constant healing" + "little defense" = "just hard".
Other things to note that the game really poorly conveys is the Inherited Skills system for weapons, to which the path you upgrade you weapon along matters much more than the final weapon you take, and you really don't "feel" the system working when you are in the blacksmith menu's. Early on you are basically picking up a move-set you like and picking up the highest raw damage weapon you can and putting on the highest defense armor you can, the skills feel very much worthless in the early game, not to mention how scarce any skills seemingly worth getting over more raw defense/attack are.
I would agree though, the core of what was in the game is quite good, fairly fun, performance is so/so on PS5, and the rather large amount of bugs aren't too gameplay breaking, and certainly not crashing the game, but they do leave a bad taste in your playtime's experience.
As for matchmaking... I find that I can rarely match with other players from the Map, but I can pretty easily get people to join me when I start as a host. I do like the "Hunter's Gates" scattered throughout the maps, but I really wish I could access that across all 4 regions from either the menu, map, or in Minato for a fight other than Amaterasu. It's almost like part of my gameplay loop is figuring out which camp I have that has easy access to a gate so I can run there check if any kemono I want to hunt have an assistance alert up, and then jump to a new map if it doesn't. Also find that after the "Low Rank" portion I pretty much see no hunts for "High Rank" kemono aside from Kingtusk.
So well, waiting a bit probably isn't a bad idea, but you can definitely scrape your money's worth out of it now, but it is rough.

After playing the demo I decided to get it. I don’t always agree with skillup. This game ran better than lagwarts legacy for me. The only bad thing I’ve experienced was a little bit of lag so I don’t understand why he’s being so dramatic about it. It also doesn’t look like a mobile game to me. Wo Long on the otherhand does look like a mobile game. I refunded that

Bad ports and optimisation are generally a symptom of not enough QC before release.
I hope this game gets fixed but sadly this is an automatic wait for 6/9 months while or they finish the damned game for me now. The backlog is real and I refuse to pay now for a working product later to companies dabbling at something new (to them).

What I like about Monster Hunter is that cycle where you have to hunt something to craft gears that efficient to hunt another and the loop just keep spinning. They then make it looks cool while doing so. Wild hunt just feel weird somehow.

And this is why I don't pre-order games anymore. I'll tell you... it was tempting to pre-order this one.... because of the regular monthly updates. I've gotten games that have been 1,2,3 or more years old before (that has had lots of updates) and A LOT of times, it's not fun playing the game, because of how much is thrown at you all at once... as opposed to experience it little by little as it comes out. So I did think about pre-ordering the game. But I figured I'd wait at least a few weeks, for reviews on the game.
So far, I'm glad I'm waiting. Fortunately, all the bad stuff being said about the game, seems like stuff that can be fixed with updates :)

This review was bizarrely frustrating. It just seems like the reviewer has barely touched Rise, and considering Rise feels more similar to Wild Hearts than World (and it's the most recent MH) I was expecting good comparisons between the two. However, when he talks about differences between this and Monster Hunter as a franchise he is almost exclusively referencing World, even if Rise was completely different in that aspect (Commencing coop for example).
Other examples are using trailer advertisement footage of Rise, thinking the Claw Blade has more mobility than the insect glaive (clearly based on World's glaive), thinking the entire wirebug system was just added "I win buttons", nothing about movement. The fact that he found such fun chasing monsters in Wild Hearts (we did that in Rise), the verticality (again Rise). So this review would be good if I hadn't played MH since World, but I also played Rise.

As a long time Monster Hunter fan of 12+ years I love Wild Hearts and some of the jank reminds me of early MH. The biggest issues are optimization but i think there’s still enough to love. After a few patches it should be a recommend for everyone imo. But for now maybe only die hard hunting genre fans. It’s unique enough to not be a clone and that’s good too.

12:49 I think the best way to describe it is "Deliberate". I personally use the phrase "Heavy Commitment". Every action you do in Monster Hunter HAS to be planned out. If you want to do something, you need to make sure that it is truly what you want to do. Some people may call it clunky, I call it design choice.
And looking at gameplay videos of Wild Hearts, I'm glad they went with the 'faster combat' design. It can serve as a different type of experience than Monster Hunter while still providing that Monster-Hunting core experience.
Just gotta wait for the devs to solve the performance issues

The core is hunting monsters and crafting gear out of them but the older games are also about survival and focus much more on gathering and preparation

Eh I had to tweak my settings a bit, but after that, the game runs fine. I don't even have a powerful computer either. I'm running an 8700k and a 2060. I had some occasional framerate drops on multiplayer, but at the same time, I don't expect a smaller studio to drop a game that's perfection out the gate. Hell, I dont expect that from AAA studios either nowadays. XD The game can definitely be tuned up, but I don't think the (hopefully temporary) performance issues overshadow what the game does well. Even with the slightly unstable performance, it's been super fun for me so far.

I think for me MH has always been about the dance between a hunter and the monster, with knowledge of monster attacks and the ability to create your own openings for attack. I personally don't like when other factors that aren't my personal skill interfere with killing a monster, the building just doesn't do it for me. Sure you can use those buildings to create verticality and such, but I'd rather good map design than ne having to build the map.

    • @ksng767
      @ksng767 Год назад +1

Knowing how to build is real skill, in fact one of the most important skills that created human civilisation. As someone who played MH for almost 20 years, the series has gone stale, mounting, clawing, riding, all of them are extremely gimmicky, building in Wild Hearts is the first time a new mechanic felt fresh and adds real depth to the combat of a hunting action game. This is a game that makes you think beyond just hitting things and know how to manipulate the environment as a human fighting against nature with our ingenuity and technology.

It's great that Monster Hunter is getting some real competition now forcing them to hopefully up their game. That said however! Many of the systems (the wood buildings in particular (Karakuri[?]) seem like Monster Hunter extensions that exist already, like the slinger from World or wirebugs from Rise. When I saw the bomb placed down 18:30 it really is just a Felyne placing down a bomb. Or later when Skillup talks about the fireworks knocking that chicken from the sky, it's just a flashbomb from MH.
I know it's Wild Hearts' version of Monster Hunter stuff and there are some wholly unique systems, plus without the "clunky" combat of Monster Hunter there'll probably be many who prefer Wild Hearts over Monster Hunter.
My whole dealio here is that they're charging the $70(USD) premium plus whatever DLC that's inevitably going to come later and well, I'm a salty cheap gamer and I do have a bias with MH so I'll probably pass on this with the performance issues and the grindier gear treadmill.
