QUANTUM OF SOLACE | Car Chase

- Picking up minutes after the end of CASINO ROYALE, the QUANTUM OF SOLACE car chase was shot in Italy. Seven Aston Martins and eight Alfa Romeos were used. 48 cars jostled in tunnels that were only 28 feet wide. When the chase moves to a quarry, drivers were pulling handbrake turns at speed on the edge of a 700ft drop.

The three things I LOVE about this opening scene:
- David Arnold's score
- The rising tension at the start
- 2:48
Love those 3 things too. The editing however sucked. Some RUclips guy counted how many cuts were in this chase scene and it averaged more than one cut per second lol
@@yippykiyay89 Must be a record xD
And also the sound of gear shifting
Don't forget the growl of that Mercedes V8
I really wished they bring David back for NTTD. His score was so good...
"Why should we buy the GOLD DISC (Original) and not the PURPLE DISC (DVD-R)."
The satisfying roar of the DBS V12
Gorgeous sounding V12
Deap, dark, brown. ANGRY. Superb engine. Large and natural, like it used to be.
Great opening to an epic & criminally underrated bond film. While the editing is a bit snappy, I don't think it's an issue at all. I think people only dislike this Bond Film because the internet tells them to.
The fact the car was driven by ben collins, Who mind you was still the stig then is epic
The stunt choreography is just brilliant, it's the editing that ruined it. I think it needed to be allowed more room to breathe. Still, i tend to appreciate this film more.
Your brain is too slow
@@Life_42 Ah of course... Please explain to me what the hell happens in the elevator fight, the random boatflip, or the godawful opera shootout.
@@Life_42 You have no appreciation for pacing, if you think "room to breathe" = "too slow".
WH250398 Nah he’s right. It’s all about brain here. And not everyone’s able to handle that kind of scene.
@@tiebrkr4231 Or the editing is just godawful.

Better car chase than the one in Spectre
I love how it starts and ends peacefully.
I hope one day they find the old footage and re edit it

Why should we buy the gold disc,(Original), and not the Purple Disc (DVD-R)
Daniel's Bond being so modern, he can really have some intense realistic chases. Like this one, Land Rover going over the edge, no explosion. Whereas Brosnan's Bond worked for the 90s era and so on.
And so little dialogue in this opening scene. It's all about the chase. Bond's silent behavior and character works so well with this. The DBS does all the talking.
What do you think of Craig pouting his lips during action scenes?
Its time to get out
No Time to Get Out
A very underrated film wish it had been longer i, know this film had a lot of criticism.
A pretensious film
One of criticisms was glaringly obvious, it was trying too hard to be like a Jason Bourne movie, specifically Bourne Supremacy, it just didn't have an identity of its own, its what keeps happening with this movies that are being made by directors that don't know how to do action
@@ramon3960 Hi i totally agree Bond is supposed be Bournes rival. To be honest o, prefer Jeremy Renner Bourne Legacy
@@vincentlim348 NO! If there was any prententious Bond film that'd be Casino Royale. FAKE as hell.
@@ramon3960 No, that was Casino Royale. This movie tried to be a BOND MOVIE again.
Great opening scene to a great sequel! I don't mind the frantic editing, actually I kinda like it. And bring back David Arnold, his bond scores are fantastic!
“...Time to get out.”
*Chef’s Kiss*
I want that Alfa that keeps up with the Aston :)
I have it , 159 😍
The opening scene is everything you would want and expect from a Bond Movie....007s Aston Martin V12 evading 3 Alpha Romeo 3.2 159s.... glorious exhaust notes though the tunnel chase and the editing is exactly how it should be....fast,sharp,thrilling edge of your seat.excellent.
Competent editing?
When Bond swerves around that truck and takes out ole boy is why I'm a fan. Craig has some of the BEST car scenes because he's enjoying that sh(beep).
People like to blame the Bourne movies when bad editing messes with what should be good action scenes. But The Bourne Supremacy’s car chase really works where this one fails even though they are both going for frenetic and brutal. You can actually tell what’s going on in Bourne and even get in his head during that scene. Quantum’s chase is just a hectic mess of bad cuts with one fun little payoff before we go into one of the worst Bond songs of them all. But bad editing is bad editing.
It doesn't help that both cars are similar colours (especially after having been covered in quarry dust). When there are such short edits, having contrasting cars would have made it easier to keep track of what's happening.
This scene was criticized, but I personally think it is one of the best car chases I have ever seen. The fast cuts really show the frantic nature of the car chase, as well as the brutal damage bond's car receives.
You can show frantic car chases without making it utterly unfollowable.
There ARE times to make something unfollowable. When the character is overwhelmed and confused and disoriented, for example.
This is *NOT* one of those times.
Craig the most Realistic Kick Arse 007 Bond Period. In the spirit of Lazenby and Dalton !
Great Scene!! Love it. Especially David Arnold's great Score. I want him back for Bond. With John Barry the best Bond composer
Best epic car chase from 007 movies.👍👍👍
I love this pre-title sequence!!
One of my favourite car chases.
The best car chase in the fanchise, on the beutiful Lake of Garda near my home!!
and Carrara
For Sale - Aston Martin DBS, one owner car (Government civil service). A little wear & tear, appropriate to usage, but still very servicable. Open to offers.
My heart breaks for those poor Alfas. If only I could have one of those beauties in America!
Can't understand why there is so much controversy about this scene. Yes, it has many, very many cuts. And it's shaky and gives little overview. Framing is mostly up close and the few overviews give less away about the chase than common in other scenes.
BUT this is all set up with this long establishing shot over the wide calm lake into the tight tunnel. And it - especially when properly watched in a cinema on a big screen - follows a very well composed dramatic rise in tension.
I think this edit portrays the little overview in a high speed car chase in such close environment with constantly changing lights extremely well. Sound editing for me is spot on and the very unique AM V12 tone obviously has a leading part in this scene.
Or in one word: loveit!
Why should we but the GOLD DISC (Original) and NOT the PURPLE DISC (DVD-R)?
So cool! Also Quantum of Solace was actually pretty good.
Yeah but it was alright
Better chase than Spectre's, but shot poorly, Spectre's chase had better cars and weapons and was shot a lot more nicely though.
@DRIVER I credit Spectre though for bringing back the car gadgets and the good old ejector seat. And the flamethrower and the sewer part were unique.
Kudos to Hoyte van Hoytema.
Quantum of Solace: The ultimate headache causer!
A very underrated movie. Marc Foster brought something different to the Bond franchise and I applaud it!
He did bring something different alright...the editing and choppy action scenes were worse than a backyard abortion
yippykiyay89 rubbish
@@alexblag18 exactly, the film is rubbish 😂
@@davemacken00 Just your opinion, mate.
I liked the car chase and the plane chase, and while the other action sequences are hard to follow, I am still ok with them. It’s just the rest of the film is a bit boring as a setpiece.
Q : Why the thumbnail of this video is so low quality?
A : It's not low quality, it's just how shaky the editing are.
A2: Even RUclips say 1080, this is in kless quality than 1080, a lot of pixels there in one of the best car chase scenes ever... Pity
@@Scordark thumbnail is crap no doubt but recently RUclips app isn't allowing videos to be viewed above 480p, Don't know the reason (could be virus) . So if you want to view videos in 720p or 1080p, view through desktop or change the settings to desktop site on Chrome in phone.
This chase is an extraordinary piece of cinema.

I have no idea 🤷🏻♂️ why few dislike this film. It’s got one of the best action scenes & lashes out the bond this era defined as the best guy to have played it
Just the editing it has too many cut, make it unbearable to watch
Watch John Wick if you want to understand why competent editing is so vital in making good action.
In literally ANY John Wick movie, you can watch any 10 second clip and know EXACTLY what's going on and where everyone is in relation to everyone else and what happened to each major character.
That absolutely is not the case here.
"Well, one of the black cars swerved, one of the black cars got bumped, um, someone shot at something..."
Love the score and the car chase but the one in Spectre was awesome
If you're into half second clips of video footage in a blender, then this sequence is for you. Movie was decent but the editing and action scenes were largely annoying AF.
James Bond keeping a straight face in a highspeed race and they shoot at him.
The best car chase of all time!!
Brilliant sound design
Incredible score
Crazy stunt choreography
High stakes
Great buildup of tension
But the editing... It majex it almost impossible to follow what's actually happening half the time.
I actually think QoS would have been rated a lot higher if it's action sequences were more competently edited. I think the issue was that Marc Forster and his editors (one of which at least he hand picked and has brought with him to multiple other projects) are just really not proficient at handling action sequences (mainly because Forster is more of a drama director)
god i wish they would release a re-edited QoS, where someone went in and calmed down all the stupidly edited action scenes. It's actually a top Bond movie if you can ignore the fact that you can hardly follow any of the action scenes! it has So much going for it, but that wannabe-a-Bourne-film editing really made it hard to love.

Loved Daniel as Bond. I will miss him.
My favourite car chase in any movie 👌
I suggest watching Bourne Supremacy.
Stunning!
I used to own an Alfa 159 3.2 litre. Can confirm it can do all of this.
Yeah. Pretty neat 4 wheel drive system also.
I own an Alfa 159 1.9 litre, mine cannot
Mr. White's men are shooting at Bond's Aston Martin not knowing that Mr. White is in the trunk. Since this film is using the four classic elements Air, Water, Earth and Fire, the car chase and the foot chase are the Earth, the boat chase and fight is the Water, the plane shooting in the air is the Air and the hotel shootout is the Fire.
Best opening scene 🔥
James Bond fans: One of the best car shases.

Regardless of the movie its a good chase scene period
Still the best bond car chase
When you can't tell what's going on
2:48, my favorite part is how quickly Bond takes out the last car. Quick and clean.
You know, for as much flack as the editing in this film gets, and mostly deserved, I think it's much better here than in the other set pieces. It feels frenetic the entire way through, and the immaculate sound design and score in this scene only add to it.
It's better *HERE* How horrific is the rest of the movie's editing?
@@yondie491 It’s not great. I think the worst offender is the opera house scene about halfway through. This scene and the hotel fight are probably the best.

Best car chase in this movie
Real bond .. no doubt .
2:48 Absolutely epic !
This is the most awesome car chase in the bond film, I think.
I think For The ASTON MARTIN DBS V12 They Did Change The Paint Job From Casino Royale it was Normal Gray color For Quantum of Solace it had a Darker gray almost black For Daniel Craig he did a perfect behind the of that car while being chased by the Two alfa Romeos
This is The Bond Ultimatum.
I love this!
Such a good car armor, that's not commercial for sure
watch this with the car chases of bond part 2 james bond radio podcast where they talk about it, very drno car chase esque since it was near construction, which craig bond movies had alot of, but i thought it was great, the only thing i disliked was the editing, if they made it more slower, but maybe the editing gives it the quick feel, like this is fast paced, but slow is great for me.Nothing else bad to say about it, i would give it a 8/10. cause it feels like any other action movie, i think if it was slowed down it would have been great.
This is one of those Bond films everybody forgets about. Just like Octopussy and Moonraker.
This is a brilliant opening car chase. It's a shame that most of this film as a whole was a very underwhelming Bond entry.
My favorite car chase
Very nice!!! Very good!!!
Can we just adore Alfa Romeo 159?
Love those Alfa 159's...........made for this movie.....

Too choppy. Shame.
Your brain is too slow
Life = 42 No. I like the movie. I can follow the scene. But it’s still not a very well done chase. Most of the action scenes in the are really choppy, over edited and lack a sense of geography.
@@connornyhan I agree with you. My comment was meant to be a joke lol
Ah, got it.
I’d kill for someone to re edit this entire movie.
Not everyone’s brain is able to handle that kind of scene, microcosm of Quantum’s action pack. But I do and I appreciate the badassery of it so much, the sounds, the nerve, the music. This is gold, right here. David Arnold is at his best in 2008.
_Quantum Of Solace_ is severely, just like _Licence To Kill_ , highly underrated.
Being able to tell what's going on in this scene doesn't make your brain smarter. It means you either know nothing about good filming or your choosing to just forget the flaws it has.
@@The12thDimension.I know this is three years ago but give it a damn rest. It's the guys goddamn opinion. If he like it then that's fine to him. Leave him alone.
You're one of these fans who always look for something to nag about because you can't find joy or optimistic values in everything. If you keep complaining about Lazenby's or Craig's Bond then watch something else if that's the kind of action you want. It's that simple. I admit that the movie has flas and there's no way wr can deny that, but overall if he likes it then it's his opinion.
In fact you're the one who contradictingly dosent know what good filmmaking is because you don't understand that just like Daniel Craig every Bond had given their own unique style to the character such as George Lazenby, Timothy Dalton Peirce Bronsan, much similar to him. You don't understand that movies need to have emotion, drama, and suspense just like *Quantum of Solace* (to be fair don't make it too overly dramatic).
Clearly it shows that you're the one who has a serious lack of understanding when it comes to movies, especially with James Bond.
And this is coming from someone who also watches the old movies.
Awesome 😍❤️
I love it...
I’d love to meet whichever dog whose neck they tied the camera round when filming this sequence and shake it’s paw.
Awesome chase!..... ruined by horrible camera work and editing.
And you do it more good?🙂
And a bad selection of color. Both cars are black and you can´t differentiate them in a fast paste.

Underrated movie
How does he get from Lake Como to Siena, a five-hour drive, in an Aston Martin that's been reported to the police and is rather conspicuously missing a door?
And while we're at it, when did he find the time to change out of his suit from the end of Casino Royale into a new one?
A British spy driving a British car on the left side and in stick, I can't even...
The cuts are absolutely terrible. Such a shame because this could have been great. David Arnold’s score is phenomenally good!
You can just feel the tonal shift and direction in the opening scene of Quantum alone vs how Casino Royale was. And that’s not a compliment
Scena super adrenalinica!!
