It was my first year as a Miami or college football fan as a kid. I didn't watch or follow much of the 01 season so as a fan I haven't yet witnessed us win a championship.
I remember watching this as it happened and I will never forget McGahee's knee bending backwards. The strange part is if you see it from one angle it, it looks like he'll be fine. From the other, it's easy to think he'll never play football again.
If I'm not mistaken, Frank Gore was supposed to be the full-time starter but had a bad ACL injury during the offseason as he was pegged to replace Portis. Therefore, McGahee became the full-time starter and thus, Payton was actually the 3rd stringer.
This was without a doubt the greatest game I’ve ever watched. As a Buckeye fan it was an emotional roller coaster and I nearly had a panic attack ab 27 times.
There’s so many college football rewinds, which don’t get me wrong isn’t a problem I love these videos no matter the sport, but there’s so many iconic moments in hockey that, if dissected and broken down to bare components, would show the true beauty of the sport. Jordan Eberle’s game tying goal with seconds left against Russia in the 2009 WJC semifinals, Marc Andre Fleury’s save in game 7 of the 09’ cup final, the Bruins comeback against the Leafs in game 7 of the 2013 ECQ, the 2001 Colorado Avalanche winning the Stanley cup where Ray Bourque got his first ring in his last season, these are all iconic stories and moments that have shaped the game itself, and absolutely deserve their spot on a rewind episode.
You do a nice job on these videos. The back stories really set up the moment. This video needed the missed holding call on Miami with 3 minutes left in regulation. Please keep them coming!
So this probably won’t get noticed but Alec Martinez’s Cup winning goal in double OT for the Kings in ‘14 needs a deep rewind. Great job on this. The only thing I felt should have been added, was Ohio State's last offensive play in regulation. Krenzel connected with Gamble on a 3rd down where he was not only held several times during the play, but the catch was clearly in bounds. But the refs called him out of bounds and missed the obvious holding going on. In this day of replay, that gets over turned and Ohio State kneels it three times and the game is over before it ever gets to OT.
If any of the holds were called it was over too. Automatic first down. That was 3 or 4 missed calls that would have ended the game in regulation. The holdings were really obvious too. DB was pulling two feet of jersey off Gamble’s body. And he still made the catch in bounds.

The reason people feel the call was dishonest was how late the offical called it and how bad it was. Miami Hurricanes were 1 of the most talented teams in college football history ! Period.
Crazy how 2 plays that involved flags changed this game so much, 1 of which looked exceptionally dishonest in the way it was called, and the other play wasn't so much the decision to flag, but the play that lead to the flag, if Andre Johnson catches that ball, this story is very different.
It is insane how stacked the 2001 and 2002 Miami Hurricanes were with future NFL talent: Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee,, Najeh Davenport, Andre Johnson, Sean Taylor, Bryant McGinnie, Antrel Rolle, Jonathan Vilma, Jeremy Shockey, D.J. Williams, Vernon Carey, possible hall of famer Vince Wilfork, and future hall of famers Ed Reed and Frank Gore. Just insane.
Didn’t mention the call near the end of regulation that would of sealed the win against Ohio State. They missed a catch by Gamble and also missed a clear defensive holding. Either would have ended the game. Idk how you don’t mention that
You should a Rewind on the Euro 2016. How Portugal didn't win a single game in regular time, how France were defeated in their own stadium, how Ronaldo got injured in the final, and Eder who was a statistically a very poor striker for Portugal, scored the winning goal.
I watched this game. Miami can gripe all they want. Game should have never went to OT. Gamble was held on a 3rd down and still caught the pass in bounds w 2 to go in regulation. Not called. Ohio State could have run the clock to nill. Every game in history has the Ref element. Ohio State won this game. Any rate one of the, if not the best game in CFB history. Both teams as it turned out were stacked w NFL talent.
Not even a Miami fan but to say "they can gripe all they want" is ridiculous. Yeah the did give u Up big 3rd down but That was a horrible call, a call that literally lost them the game. I'm tired of these refs getting passes
@@KimbroughFilms Miami losing the game is what lost them the game. If you don't want your win contingent upon one potentially blown call, then you should be up more on your opponent.
The flag in the endzone was horrible call. We should have won in regulation on the third down completion and we’d never have to hear about another blown call.
I stay up to watch this game! I'll never forget rooting for Maurice Callrett. He was my favorite player in college football at the time! I bought his Jersey the week before!
Eric L pick/rub. Depends on the ref, depends on the fan. Alabama had 65 yards to defend their title, but you’re gonna argue the last yard and a half? Get over it bro.
This may be obscure in terms of big name programs, but maybe do a rewind of the Duke vs. UNC 2012 FOOTBALL game that Duke won on a last second touchdown to Jamison Crowder (former Redskins now Jets receiver). After going through 18 years of absolute futility in football, that was the game that made Duke bowl eligible again in a sense completing the resurrection of the program by David Cutcliffe.
Here's the thing- that game never should have gone to overtime. The officials were SO tilted towards Miami. Look no further than Ohio State's final drive: on a critical 3rd down, they missed a key defensive holding call, and called a catch an incompletion because the receiver was out of bounds, even though it turns out that he was in bounds. Ohio State punts it, Roscoe Parrish pulls off a big return, and Miami sends it into overtime. If they get either one of those calls right, Ohio State picks up the first down and runs out the clock. That's how it was the entire game, so many missed calls to benefit Miami. Then, the pass interference call. There WAS a penalty, just not the one that they called. There should’ve been defensive holding (again) as the defender prevented Chris Gamble from making an outside move to catch the ball. The result is the same: the penalty occurred in the end zone, so the ball is spotted at the 1, first and goal. Anyone who thinks that this game was fixed is absolutely wrong.
Love your deep rewind videos. For this one, though, you ignored a key play that would have added even more drama to your buildup. 2:30 left in regulation, OSU up 17-14, 3rd & 6 from their own 32. They barely got the snap off as the play clock hit :00, then Gamble makes a catch past the 1st down marker that is ruled out of bounds (no replay review in 2003) despite being blatantly held TWICE (no flag). Meanwhile, QB Krenzel was mercilessly thrown to the ground well after the pass was thrown (no flag). If any of the penalties are called (2 holding or roughing the passer) or if Gamble is ruled in bounds, OSU gets a 1st down with 2:18 left and Miami out of time outs. Game over! There would never have been a punt for Roscoe Parrish to return, no game tying field goal, no OT's, no controversial PI. ruclips.net/video/i1xlg3SWDsk/видео.html
@@glenjoke10 I give credit to Bama's Saban run, but in 30+ years I've been watching college football those Canes teams were just insane. I'd put the SC Bush-Leinart teams after those Canes teams. And I come at this with zero rooting interest (Michigan alum and Ann Arbor native). But these types of talks are what makes college football the best sport by far.
Being on the bad end of a 50/50 call isn't getting robbed. OSU legit should've won the game in regulation had the refs not completely swallowed their whistles on an obvious Miami PI/Hold on the OSU 3rd down play with about 2 minutes left. OSU would've run out the clock for a 17 to 14 win in regulation. That blatant no call gave Miami life. They got a big punt return, picked up a first down, and kicked a clutch field goal at the gun to force OT. Credit Miami for hanging in, but whine all you want, that game should never have gone to OT in the first place.
Brad Bowers Gamble also had a “OOB catch” at the sideline on a third down on that last drive in regulation that looks like it was inbounds. Would have been first down and they could run the clock out.
On OSU's last drive of regulation with 2:18 on the clock , Chris Gamble was absolutely mugged by Kelly Jennings on an out route. The holding call and automatic first would have allowed OSU to run up the middle, burn Miami's last timeout and if they had to punt, get them the ball back with less than :30 left. That often gets left out of the lore of this game
Nicholas Payne - Pathetic excuse, these types of plays happen in every game at every level of football. If we went through that entire game I am sure we will find more holding penalties on both sides that were not called.
The call was correctly called. Simply because the biased tv announcer yelled out bad call that gave you a wrong perception. NCAA introduced replay since that biased tv announcer's false allegation. If that game plays in modern day football. The play is reviewed and it would shut that biased tv announcer up. The play had 3 choices of penalty: holding, facemask, pass-interferrence. Pick your poison.

@@mou6854 ey u still got an elite qb and a chance to win this year..let us giants fans have our memories, u guys have enough
Yes.
I wasn't rooting for either team, but it was one of the best football games I'd ever seen.
The story of this game was Ohio State purposely taking out McGahee.
I was born on this day!!! Go Buckeyes
That's a conqincident, since I was born March 23 2002 and a buckeye fan myself.
DO a rewind for the Cal Stanford "The Play" from 1982
That would be interesting "oh the band is out on field he's going to go to end zone..."
THANKS FOR BRINGING UP OLD WOUNDS
Think about this, earlier in the year, Frank Gore had gotten hurt......that night, Miami could have had a backfield of Willis McGahee and Frank Gore!
It is insane how stacked the 2001 and 2002 Miami Hurricanes were with future NFL talent:
Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee,, Najeh Davenport, Andre Johnson, Sean Taylor, Bryant McGinnie, Antrel Rolle, Jonathan Vilma, Jeremy Shockey, D.J.
Idk how you don’t mention that
I know they always talk about the flag in the end zone but not the one you mentioned
yeah watch this video it is a horrible call: ruclips.net/video/pt1PGQ6zzy0/видео.html
I think this game helped explode college football. The sport was on a rocket ship after this.
This was a travesty against Miami. This ended a generation!
Screwjob.They completely screwed Miami
Tevin Dixon fake ass u of m
Wrong call, but it was a penalty. They said pass interference but really it was defensive holding.

Tevin Dixon yes it did. The official originally signaled holding, then changed his mind to PI
You should a Rewind on the Euro 2016. How Portugal didn't win a single game in regular time, how France were defeated in their own stadium, how Ronaldo got injured in the final, and Eder who was a statistically a very poor striker for Portugal, scored the winning goal.
How did you not do the LSU vs Iowa Hail Mary in the 2005 Capital one bowl. That was a much better walk off play
The Mavs' Game 2 comeback vs. the Heat would make a great Rewinder.
Yeah the did give u
Up big 3rd down but That was a horrible call, a call that literally lost them the game. I'm tired of these refs getting passes
@@KimbroughFilms Miami losing the game is what lost them the game. If you don't want your win contingent upon one potentially blown call, then you should be up more on your opponent.
I believe the call on Sharpe was holding, not pass interference. Which, if the play is reviewed from beginning to end, distinctly shows holding.
It’s been 16 years and Miami’s still salty
It was a bullshit call
The flag in the endzone was horrible call. We should have won in regulation on the third down completion and we’d never have to hear about another blown call.
@bbkyjohnson if you're referring to the Chris gamble catch, it actually should've been negated by delay of game penalty by ohio.

Nice shoutout to Chuck Ealey and his 35-0 Toledo teams! Go Rockets, Go Bucks!
Eric L YESSIR GO BUCKS BABY
Eric L lmao revisionist the refs cheated for you guys!
THAAAANK YOU! No one else bothers watching the reverse angle of the call and keeps jumping on the “deerr Miami got cheated” bandwagon

Nope because they want something to cry about. Miami fans and anybody who believes Miami should have won are trash.
You could do a whole rewind series on FSU wide right 🙄 (90s/00s Noles fan clearly still not over it here)
Love your deep rewind videos.

I'm not even a Miami fan but they got robbed I get them credit for not kicking that officials ass after the game he should have never officiated again
@@bradbowers7145 criami fans seem to forget that.
Brad Bowers Gamble also had a “OOB catch” at the sideline on a third down on that last drive in regulation that looks like it was inbounds.

Good choice! Matteau in 1994 would be great!!!
PI call should’ve never ever been made... unbelievable
