One of my favorite quotes from this album: “they told me all of my cages were mental, so I got wasted like all my potential...”

  • @disgaeajean13

I think that the value in this song lies in how it objectively addresses mental health issues. People can so easily be invalidated and brushed off for saying that they are suffering something that isn't physical or material.
    Her lines
"Pulled the car off the road to the lookout, could have followed my fears all the way down"
speaks immensely about how people spiral when dealing with a mental health crisis.
She reaffirms this in the line
"They told me all of my cages were mental, so I got wasted like all my potential."
There is research on how people with mental health illnesses lose time (measured in years as setbacks) from achieving what people conventionally achieve had their lives not been upended by a mental health issue. This song speaks to so many people who silently suffer, whose wounds are rarely ever visible.

Definitely brushes up on substance abuse, even though nobody really notices these things until it becomes a chronic problem that gets in the way of daily life.
Remember KimYe gate? When they made her look like a snake with those "receipts Kim" dropped, but later was revealed to be something they contrived to make Taylor look like the bad guy?
Her outward response to that death of her reputation was the album itself. And this song and this album shows how she is molded and is still growing with those pains.

When the whole Kimye recordings dropped and the hate mail exploded, she very nearly gave up performing at all. And West's action at the 2009 VMA affected her mental health too, and helped lead her into an eating disorder. Also, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Miley, and Dua Lipa and others have been advocating lately for better awareness. She is a lot better now, but also more open about it.

This is my favorite song on the album and it’s taken the spot of my favorite Taylor song ever. For me, I tend to look at this song like a diary entry, where you talk through all of your feelings and everything you’re going through by writing it all down. Even though no one is going to read the diary entry besides the one writing it at least there’s some way to process it all.

I see it somewhat the same way to me she is talking more to herself in this song than to another person. Diary entry is another really good way to look at it as we know Taylor loves her journals.

As a fan since 2006 I think This song is like hurt being very vulnerable and discompletely honest with her fans and I think she's been struggling with metaphor for her life I just I see between the lions and people like me resonate with all her sats once because I get it and I really do appreciate her art and she's just real right now and I really appreciate it cause we'rebels 32 years old I literally go out with her albums and it's nice seeing The real purr and I feel like it's a mirrored connothing

I don’t know if this song is specifically about her or not. But, it easily could be interpreted that way. There was a time during 2016-2017 when she disappeared and didn’t know if her fans would still be there for her. She didn’t have the confidence in herself or in her fans. There is the reference to following her fears down the cliff, which is brought back up in the song Hoax. All her cages were mental meaning she has demons, most of which are her own insecurities and fears which limit her or cause problems for her. Most of her problems are in her head or arise from insecurities in her head. She was so ahead of the curve the curve became a sphere is my favorite line, she was ahead, and IMO still is, ahead of every one else. But, the curve kept going until it became a sphere symbolizing that her only real competition was with herself, her own “cages” Or demons that are mental, she was holding herself back. She references these demons in Invisible String and can be implied from Afterglow and even False God.
On the other hand. It could be an older adult James still trying to get it right and all the theories about Taylor are just fan theories since we have nothing else to do during this pandemic.

I've never heard the former gifted kid undiagnosed ADHD struggle auriculated in a song before and she surprises us with the super poetic "I was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere; fell behind all my classmates and I ended up here" (RIGHT after a joke double entendre line about wasted potential which EVERY SINGLE gifted ADHD kid is told at some point that they aren't living up to their potential and they have so much potential and it's such a known trope these days that like every single teacher put this on report cards for decades or something) but it's just surreal how well she so succinctly captures that in this. I'll always love this song for that creativity.

the lyrics in this song will never fail to amaze me. it’s insane how well she paints this picture of struggling with mental health.
“i pulled the car off the road to the lookout. i could’ve followed my fears all the way down”
“and maybe i don’t quite know what to say, but i’m here in your door way […] this is me trying”
it’s like she’s talking about someone who drove to the lookout, and was thinking about jumping. they could’ve followed their fears all the way down. but instead, she ended up in the other persons doorway. even though she had no idea what to say, at least she tried to get help instead of following her fears all the way down.
“pouring out my heart to a stranger, but i didn’t poor the whiskey […] this is me trying”
she was spilling all of her thoughts and pain and fear to someone who didn’t care, someone who didn’t even know her. but that’s better than pooping the whiskey (or giving in to addiction in order to fill the void). maybe the stranger doesn’t care what she has to say, but at least she’s trying.

From what fans have sort of put together, from songs like Cornelia Street and Afterglow, she may have tried to break up with her current boyfriend at the beginning of the relationship so you could interpret it like:
"I had the shiniest wheels, now they're rusting" = I used to escape everytime but now I can't
"They told me all of my cages were mental" = she self-sabotages
    But we'll never know 🤷

This is an imaginary character--a recovering drug addict. There ARE a lot of songs about exes. . . . by every singer. She dropped a hammer on John Mayer, though (Dear John). She dropped a hammer on Joe Jonas on the Ellen Show, SNL Monologue Song, and in a commercial for action figures (and the songs "Last Kiss" and "Always and Forever"). All of the old feuds are outgrown now, except her fight with Borchetta over her master recordings. And she won't talk to (or about) Kanye West, for reasons.

I think it’s kinda of unfair to judge Taylor on how hard she comes after her former lovers when she never mentions their names, except, John, which was very deserving. She’s also mainly dated dudes with plenty of privilege.

This is probably gonna be very like now related but have you ever liked when on Tumblr or some type of blog and you just express and vent out all your frustrations and emotions? And you just know maybe something one of the people that you follow totally understand you and I think this is 1 of the days where maybe Taylor Redd like a fan's post or something that she felt the same pain and suffering and It seems like she understands and It's gonna sound very odd but it seems like a breath of fresh air seeing the human side of her instead of what people would like to see is the girl next door always happy talk my love songs and I always seen a girl who was a outcast and who was different and wanted to fit in and I don't know I feel like she always Put a facade and authentic people will see right through that and I am one of those people that see right through to her and I like Zach girls Taylor and her embracing her true self right now as she's turning 33 And going through the albums it's like a journey to like self discovery and her 1st album and her last option but really like her as a person

Most songs from Folklore are stories not related personally to her. I think this is one of them, she is singing from a perspective of someone else, maybe a friend, family or movie character, but not herself. :)

This is too similar to The Archer for it to not be about her. I feel like the story can be not about her, but the whole song could easily be related to her insecurities.

oh-ef you are right there . Since 2008 her songs have strangely described exactly what I’m feeling in my day to day life - partly because we are so close in age that it’s almost like when she releases what she wrote I’m going through that stage in my life - it’s not just the love songs or the breakup songs but even songs like Clean, The lucky one, mean - they help me understand what I’m feeling and how to navigate through those emotions
