I’m a 42 year old, grown adult with two small children and Taylor Swift has been my therapist from her very first album. People only know what she’s put out as singles. They have no idea how deep her songs get.
I discovered Taylor Swift in 2020, that year alot happened to me. I made the final decision to leave my kids dad after 25 yrs of toxic relationship (after we lost our kids custody). Covid happened, my dad died from cancer , had an energency surgery for my baldgladder...I went through her whole music and she made me pass through all the rough time. She makes me feel happy even when she sing a sad song. Its her power and nobody will ever tell me shes a bad artist I will never agree.
As a person with mental health struggles, this song hits so hard. Especially on the days when it’s hard to even get out of bed but I manage to do it. Sometimes you just want to scream to everyone that you are trying the best and they don’t realize just how hard that is some days.

This song is about mental health. You listened and watched the lyric twice and didn't catch she sings, "they told me all of my cages were MENTAL" ...not metal.
I don't think it's vulnerable because that one doesn't feel at all confessional to me. That one feels like a commentary on people who are like that, stuck in their grief over a breakup for years and years, frozen, but she's not revealing about herself. She didn't go through it. She moves on quickly comparatively. It's a REALLY good one for a therapist to analyze though!! It's about a mental health struggle for sure.

She was just thinking about people who are struggling with mental health issues and addiction and every day they are fighting NOT to drink or do drugs or perhaps take their own life. She said they are silently struggling and no one might know how close they are to whatever their demons are telling them to do. Abd that for many the act of NOT doing something is actually DOING SOMETHING- ITS TRYING. the first verse is about a person who’s close to ending their life. The second verse is about someone who was so smart in school but after school we don’t have the same opportunities to “ get gold stars” and you have to make all these decisions and try to make your way and sometimes the press is too much and you fall behind everyone else but it’s good enough just to keep trying and we should acknowledge everyone who is out there at least trying to overcome their challenges
