I was born in 1961. I grew up in Oakland at 98th & MacArthur. I have always been a Raider fan. IDC if my Raiders move to Bagdad, I will always be a Raider fan. I would love to see the Raiders move back to a modern stadium in Oakland. Wherever the Raiders play, I am a fan.
I can't blame them for leaving California. Governor Newsom is a dictator. But, yes, Roger Goodell's greed was a major cause. He would want a stadium in Hell if Satan put up the money.
I worked in the Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market in the late seventies and eighties, and particularly in the Ninth Street Market before they built the new huge one that exists today. During that time the Raiders were playing in the Los Angeles Coliseum, many of the players would come to the Produce Market, and the Tooz was one of them that I met and remember with a smile on my face. The man was huge but very friendly and hung out with us talking and sharing his plans for the future of how long he planned to play football.
Excellent video on Tooz. Imagine a sports league in 2024 getting a court order & using the officers to physically prevent him from taking the field to play.
I may live in Pennsylvania but I am and always be a OAKLAND RAIDERS FAN. They will always be the OAKLAND RAIDERS to me. They need to go back to Oakland where they belong.❤ Best team in the NFL. Silver and black is the best!
I think Al Davis knew how to build great teams. He did like the eccentric types, but he also liked the solid rock types like Jim Otto, Gene Upshaw, and Art Shell. Davis was like a great orchestra conductor. He built those great teams by feel. He was a genius.
Stabler and the "Tooz"? What a pair! Both are legends, roommates and teammates that won two NFL Championship rings. The bars got drunk dry in Heaven by these party animals. It's scary to think how good the Tooz could have been if he actually had his head fully into practicing the week before the game. He was such a natural talent that all he had to do was show up on the field for game day. He put the fear of god into the opposite teams Oakland played. The man was a Beast!
Pairing The Tooz and The Snake. Great call. Read Stabler's book on him and the Tooz. One funny story was about the women flight attendants who lived in the same apartment complex as these two Raiders. John would start with Crown Royal and Cheese Wiz , then Ken , John and the stewardess's would go "Cruising with the Tooz" on Saturday nights. Fights, laughs and somewhat nude flight attendants dancing on bar tables in Jack London Square. Come game day Sunday, both Ken and John were in their huddles throwing up and winning most games. The stuff of legends. Been a Raider fan since 1970. Saw many games with these two characters and meant them at Ricky's Hyatt.
"Sloth love Chunk." And this guy loves Big John. He was a fun actor & even more fun of a football player. Glad he got his 2nd chance with the Raiders.(I guess it was his 4th but whatever.) R.I.P. Buddy, I hope you're at peace. You had a rough go in life and didn't deserve it. I know they're the Las Vegas Raiders but they'll never be that to me. They'll always be the Oakland Raiders. (and I'm a Eagles fan, yes I'm still sore about that Super Bowl, I'm still blown away at how big John was, @16:04-Sizemore of the Eagles was a big guy & he looks like a kid)
The Tooz…big man, big personality!...loved the guy, there’s a great book written about him called..”Cruisin’ With the Tooz”…I highly recommend it if your a fan of Big John Matuszak, despite the addictions, he was a humble sweet man who’d give ya the shirt off his back, a loyal friend indeed, I miss that dude, a true Raider till the end! 🏈
Certainly his off-field antics were controversial, but from a football standpoint,I always admired his ability. For such a tall man,he played with great leverage, and was a real handful.
I used to follow them in the late 60s -early 70s. I remember the big brawl with KC in 68 or 69. But damn, it would sure be nice if they could consistently win nowadays!
I am a Stone Pittsburgh Steelers Fan, From 1969 and Age 7, Our 1969 draft, Chuck Noll's First, Joe Greene ( His Real First Name Is Charles!) Life Really Should Have Been Alot Kinder To Him
Nice way to clean up his story. Tooz was a bullying tough who attacked not 1 but 3 different men at Missouri. The damage to the cadet was lifelong. He got off on numerous charges all his life. If he is everyone's hero in comments you can have him.
As ball boy for the Iniversity of Tampa Spartans in the early 70s I can confirm Matusak was a bully and psychopath who beat up a much smaller teammate while playing a pickup basketball game. The player Joe Sliker was almost beaten to death. He was also openly bisexual and took any drugs given to him. A horrible human being
The city of Oakland was not worthy of the raiders. The city was short sighted and corrupt just like the state of California and refused to help keep the team in Oakland . The city has lost football and baseball forever and become a woke homeless shit hole with a defunded police department and a city council of communist morons
John suffered so much mental pain from his childhood and being alone he was not a person that did well being alone he started self-medicating in high school. There's a reason the 27 club exists it's because after the age of 25 introducing polypharmakia, The introduction of multiple different drugs into the system like opiates uppers downers cocaine and alcohol your body cannot handle shift in the gears like that and your heart just goes that's it we're done. It's a real shame because with a heart as big as his all humanity came out less when he was gone
It is pronounced Dan De-vine. Not De-veen. I noticed a lot of of the younger sports content creators on RUclips have trouble pronouncing names of people that were alive before they were born.
You can imagine my shock upon hearing he attended the University of Missouri, my Alma Mater. I still live in Columbia, just a few blocks from the football stadium.
My Jr. High metal arts teacher was Dave Rowe a defensive tackle on the 1976 Oakland Raiders Super Bowl Champions. Mr. Rowe was a great guy and teacher. I think Mr. Rowe would've been a good influence on John Matuzak.
They forever will be OAKLAND Raiders and ruled the NFL from 1968-1988 just think if they would drafted Dan Marino can you say three more tittles!!!! Same for the Athletics two icon awesome teams of the 70's!!!
“Cruising With The Tooz”. Watch John steal every scene in the 1979 Film “North Dallas Forty “ opposite Nick Nolte, Mac Davis,And one of the best scenes I’ve ever seen telling off Charles Durning in the locker room at the end of the film. If Art Thoms ,Tom Keating,Tony Cline didn’t have injuries Johns resurrection as a NFL player might not have ever happened. Destined as others have stated to become a Raider.Uhhh Dan Devine like Hollywood and Vine.Didn’t know the narrator was going to mention North Dallas Forty,or show a picture of the famous scene with Charles Durning.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE RAIDERS BACK IN OAKLAND THAT’S THEIR HOME BUT OAKLAND NEEDS TO SUPPORT THE RAIDERS FIX THEM A GREAT COLOSSEUM WHY DO THEY HAVE TO GO TO VEGAS TO HAVE A DECENT PLACE TO PLAY? high school football field is better the Colosseum I am from Oakland born in the Bay Area Berkeley California. I can’t be a raider fan. It’s not sustained to me as the Las Vegas Raiders so I’m running with the 49ers now I’m a Bay Area man for real.
As much as i would love to see the Raider in Oakland, even the Davis fsmily cannot resurrect the Colluseum or find them a stadium to play in there. Didnt matter how BAD the Raiders were in Oakland, it was always entertaining to watch the crowd. It also didn't matter how awful the Raiders were, YOU PLAY THEM AT THE COLLUSEUM YOU BETTER BRING YOUR A GAME!
I'd love to see them play the San Diego Chargers at Oakland. Maybe followed by them playing the Cardinals in St. Louis. (I'm being totally serious as well)
Had the crap beat out of him in the early 1970s in Tampa area by Dick Slater a 285 pound professional wrestler with a knock out punch during an altercation on the beach..
56 years old and remember Matuszak well. He was a dude other players didn't want to f with too much. He was 6'8, like the "Mad Stork" who's name I do not remember, but he took bad assed Ben Davidsons # after Ben retired. I believe it was #82. The NFL is sooo much different now. I still watch but no where near what I used to. I don't relate to most of the players today, or their crazy hair do's
It would be nice if you could pronounce the coach's names correctly. Dan DeVINE, Al On O Frio! My father was a professor at the University of Missouri. He failed John Matuszak in his zoology course.
The University of Missouri is my Alma mater, and I, too, winced and cringed at the incorrect pronunciation. We don't make that error around here, lol. More than 30 years later, I still live a few blocks from Faurot Field.
I hate to say it, but none of the 3 greatest franchises ( Warriors, A's, Raiders) will return to a city that has become such a S-hole like Oakland has. I feel sorry for the fans, but then again they have voted for the politicians who has allowed Oakland to go from fairly bad, to horrible.
TOOZ played for the Raiders when the Raiders were, the Raiders🏆🏆🏆 them days are long gone
@@charlesrazo7246 I totally agree with your statement, gawd damn I miss those good ol days of hard nosed Raider football
NFL is just trash now!
Keep hoping. They're gone for good. The NFL wanted them in LV.
NFL leadership are weiners...
Once a Raiders fan always a Raiders fan.....no other team matters. That's how I feel.
I can't blame them for leaving California. Governor Newsom is a dictator. But, yes, Roger Goodell's greed was a major cause. He would want a stadium in Hell if Satan put up the money.
💯💯💯💯💯💯
Back in Oakland... absolutely but it's a different world.. those days of great historical games and players will NEVER BE MATCHED
My former teammate with our 76 Super Bowl Champion team .. Great guy on and off the field ..
49 MS
John was a great guy with a huge heart.
Just easier to point out anything negative.
Thank you
Steelers fan here.. those raiders teams were awesome
Loved this guy
The Tooz is the ultimate poster boy for what a Raider was. Six foot eight of crazy.
Always destined to be a Raider, and a great one at that.
My friends dad was a highschool classmate and friend of Johns.
I got to meet him in 1980 and was shocked at how big he was.
rip tooz

Yes Oakland forever. Ive been a Raiders fan since 1967 I was 6yrs old Raiders forever.Raaaaaaiders

Emotional correct.
John was not a beast.
I still to this day will not own anything that says Vegas Raiders. It’s all Oakland.
Just one of two Raider players who were in a good movie.
Ben Davidson with Conan the Barbarian, and Matuszak
in North Dallas Forty.

I was with John in Santa Rosa the day he used the house phone to call the Raiders to tell them he wouldn't be making it to spring camp.
I’m not a Raiders fan but they should be in Oakland ❤️❤️
I agree but how much longer was sharing the field with the baseball team was gonna keep going?

Calling BS.
Oak Creek is small and John’s Heart was large.
John was the first pick of the draft by the Oilers.
Ive been to a couple of games in Vegas. Its not the same..not even close.
John was Wisconsin State shot put AND discus champion. I know cause I attended his high school.
Oakland is the Raiders, and the Raiders are Oakland.

Ted Hendricks
The raiders will never ever play in Oakland again. That city will not support a raider return.
Fact
Rebuild the coliseum and bring back the raiders and the A's
Oakland Raiders rolls off the tongue better then LA Raiders or Vegas RAiders.
"Hey you guys!" - Sloth
He should have been sent to the Marines!

Dan Devine later coached Notre Dame to a national title in 1977, succeeding the great Ara Parseghian no less.
The Raiders belong in Oakland no doubt.
Always...the OAKLAND RAIDERS!
Never bullies onto others any one thx to all ya
What happened with Markie. The hair cut is bad enough but his football decisions are even more horrendous 💯
To me, the Raiders will always be the Oakland Raiders.

My God, you criticize everything. I don't know if you're aware, but not everyone who watches the videos is American and knows the teams.
Hello, from Chiefs Kingdom! 👋🏻😁
🏴☠️🏴☠️☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
Yes come back home to Oakland
His players taught US history of others experiences 2😅
Sloth!
I think the raiders belong in Oakland but the city has to cater to them they didn't so Marc Davis moved them to Las Vegas they won't get much better
I like the Raiders, but Oakland wouldn’t build a new stadium. It is what it is. Las Vegas Raiders now.
Oakland has too much poverty. Davis family billionaires should buy their own stadiums.
He was just another player who abused drugs and alcohol. BIG DEAL>>>>>>>
Between Matuzsak & Alzado how much can a fan of the raiders take emotionally ? 😮
Dick Slater kicked his ass.
I want to know what a "domestic accident" is in his case
They should have stayed in Oakland.
😪😪😪😪😪 he was a good player I don't like being a former special ed kid not good at saying things
John would have embraced any special education child and wrap his protective arms around them…
