SANTANA MASTERCLASS: what I learned

  • Carlos Santana's Masterclass is an in depth look at his approach to playing guitar. Specifically, the art and soul. It's great for beginner guitar players as well as advanced guitar players, as it features over three hours of lessons which explore a range of topics from guitar practice to the importance of confidence.
    I was originally going to cover Tom Morello's Masterclass, which features a more traditional guitar course structure. But after I stumbled upon Santana's Masterclass trailer, I was too intrigued by Santana's... allure.
    Carlos Santana is a rock and roll hall of famer who has been impacting the rock music scene since the 1960s. He holds the record for most Grammy wins in a single night thanks to his 1999 smash hit "smooth". He was ranked the 20th best guitarist of all time on Rollingstone's "100 best guitarists if all time" list.
    His immense success makes this candid Masterclass absolutely fascinating, as it provides an opportunity to better understand how to become a a world class guitarist.
    In this video I break down what I consider the most important lessons from Santana's Masterclass. I include topics like the importance of blues music for guitarists, techniques to practice constructing a melody, how to lead a band, the benefits of good guitar gear, and more!
    The price of the Masterclass is a little steep , however I think it's well worth it for aspiring guitarists who love Santana's music. However, if you're still unsure, this video serves as a review of Carlos Santana's MasterClass.

      "Western" meaning North American (but also European, as our music spread to Europe, and worldwide). Classical music was essentially a root of everything, and from music unique to America, - Jazz and Blues, formed another type of music that was originally unique to America but quickly spread around the world, starting in the U.K. - Rock, or Rock and Roll). Jazz and Blues are probably the major foundation of Rock and Roll (and of much Latin music also). But most of the music genres and musical influences were European in origin.

    • @Chunda8
      @Chunda8 5 лет назад +1

      I think it's easy to forget that Carlos Santana is a rock/pop musician who basically blends blues, pop and latin influence together to make a distinct and more profound sound. Blues is the foundation of what we consider mainstream rock and roll. That being said, Jethro Tull played Bach and most guitarists should know "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring". Most Jazz musicians love Bach and know a lot of it. I think if you are a rock guitarist you should know quite a bit of Blues. You are exempt from this rule only if you are in Radiohead, Sonic Youth or Kraftwerk. Also, the more Bach you know as a keyboardist, the more accessible the advanced piano repertoire is.

      @@RedlightBlue- Don't be embarrassed. Learn to get over your embarrassment, and like Carlos said, learn to breathe while you play. I'm a great (or good :) guitarist, but I can't breathe lol (I have COPD and other health issues). And thus I almost never play any more. Any dreams of being a rock star were short lived. But I met Carlos and jammed with him a little in 1992. Will never forget that. Learn your chords (major, minor, diminished, etc., etc. etc.). Then learn the fret-board and where the same notes are on different strings, up the scale, and in different octaves (by dissecting the chords and notes within you learned) . Learn your scales (pentatonic, hepatonic, etc. up and down the fretboard (ascending/ descending). Learn and practice picking techniques, and strumming techniques and combinations of both. Then practice shapes and forms and stretching your hand to experiment with what is comfortable for you.
      The entire learning process is an experiment. An enjoyable but sometimes frustrating experiment. I would (and did) definitely listen to the Blues and Jazz, and Classical music (and Latin music, Asian, African, - all types of music really). The foundation of Rock is the Blues (in large part). And once you are relatively good, the knowledge and foundation of Jazz and Classical forms on the guitar, will help you improvise to learn more leads, scales, solos, etc. I would buy a metronome or a keyboard that has one (for timing), and use the pre-programmed samples to help you learn guitar (or most other instruments). It's so good to have a rhythm section (or improvised one) when learning. Just my three cents. I'm an expert at nothing, and a master at everything :) (including bating). Nice Les Paul. Thanks for the video.

Put in your heart and soul in all you do and you'll benefit the most. In these times with so much distractions and consuming it even takes more discipline to make the concentration yourney "within" to find your voice. Maestro Santana has learned you wisdom and philosophy, which are things you have to "live". The right mind set is the greatest starting point. Greetings Vic

  • @RobertoReyesChHC
    @RobertoReyesChHC 4 года назад +1

    Man I love Carlos but the masterclass struck me as vague and esoteric and forced/contrived. Not very useful for musicians who are trying to learn how to play. You don't need to be a "character" at all either, as a matter of fact acting does not usually have a place in music. People will always value sincerity in the end and people who front don't have lasting power. I'm personally proud of what he accomplished but he ended up becoming more of an idea than a sick soulful Latin fusion guy who just killed it even against odds, even on mind bending drugs. Also my friend, there is very little actual guitar playing on here and from what I've seen you actually have an overdub of a studio recording while you play and sing. Its impossible for your voice to have an effect like super wet reverb with no mic yet your guitar sounds basically normal. Come on dude.... I know it can be discouraging and almost intimidating to practice, even I get like that too, but that's just not right. Trust me it can be pretty daunting and frustrating to play the same parts over for 6 hours but the feeling you get after you master a lick or technique is just beautiful. You don't even need to play super complicated stuff either, you like acoustic finger picking? That's awesome! Get good at what you're already good at and you'll see that eventually you'll evolve sometimes without even knowing it. I have faith that you can do it too. Anybody can it just takes practice and even the greats practiced. But do as you do brother just keep in mind what I said about people valuing sincerity.

    Hmmm... So before I saw this video I saw an add for Santanas masterclass. Then I saw this video recommend up which was a weird coincidence. Contemplating trying to actually get into this masterclass sometime. Do you know how long this masterclass will be available or is it only for a limited time? Idk. Anyways, great review and nice content as usual. Keep up the videos there helpful.

    When Santana talks of blues as the foundation of rock music as we know, he is serious and honest. And it is the truth. The reason the Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly and the like all appealed to the masses because they knew how to adapt Negro music. Plain and Simple. And if you listen to Santana speak these days he actually calls his music "African." There it is.

    Thank you for this video ! Now I don't need to fork out all that money on Santana's Master Class.......and so glad that I didn't. In just over 6 minutes, you summarized what Carlos would have milked out of an hour saying the same thing with all those pretty words he uses. Those words don't come cheap so you saved me a lot of money and I do appreciate it.

    Yeah, even though I think blues is boring to play many times, I think so many players have so much feel and passion, more than some random shred I have heard. Looks like some good lessons. My mom lets me use her account which is awesome. I loved how you quoted that one add for that one music game ahahhh.

    Cracks me up how you simultaneously make fun of Santana while also praising him. When this started I thought I was gonna be offended, because I'm a huge Santana fan. But your humor was on point and not disrespectful. So, well done. :-)

    Did anyone else wonder why Carlos had all those amps in his practice room ....excuse me " get to know your guitar better room" ? All he needed was that one Mesa Boogie combo .and even that could knock over a couple lamps.

    this is a bit unrelated BUUUT, the ads for both of these guitarists suck, like I don't know anything about them, but holy shit, specially the other guy (the one you mentioned at the start), like what do you mean you didn't trust teachers? WHAT'S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? what, I do the opposite of what my teacher said now? atleast santana's ad gave off what he was and what he showed you, but what the actual fuck does "I didn't trust the teachers" mean?
    edit: good video btw, I really like your content, it's entertaining and helpful and gets to the point without wasting your time, just wanted to say that I really appreciate it and I hope you have a S W E L L day/night :D

      i get what you're saying and i think it's because the actual courses aren't particularly well structured lmao. i think you'll get the most out of them if you already have a preexisting knowledge and appreciation for whoever the instructor is. like half of santana's course was him playing and telling stories. which is awesome if you're a fan, but if you just want to learn... not so much lmao
