01:03 The Research
03:12 The HIT SINGLE
05:10 Santana's Special Mode
06:39 Conclusion
Santana has written such timeless music which has also helped latin music be listened to by a global audience. In my opinion he has one of the most recognizable guitar voices ever, he's one of those few players whose solos you can actually sing...
true
This video was as smooth as the ocean under the moon
It’s the same as the emotion that I get from you
I don't even play guitar but I think this video is fascinating. And I enjoy your passion for the music. I know some of Santana's earlier stuff; his sound is like a blend of spices. And yes, do a part 2.
I’m so glad Rob Thomas is mentioned as a legend. Smooth was released the year I was born and my mother made sure it was engraved in my brain. Huge fan of both Rob and Santana!
I hate match box twenty's hit albums. Rob may have gotten better further into his career, but their early stuff was so bland.
I would love to see a part 2 on this video. Well done!
Carlos 70’s prog era was soooooo goooood!
I thought the black guitar strap in the thumbnail was a Tie and I thought Mike was trying to cosplay as Gus Fring for a second haha
More Santana yes! 1st two albums…the delicious SG tone vs polished PRS…Soul Sacrifice, Samba pa Ti…
Negative. He recorded Abraxas on a Les Paul even if he played an SG at Woodstock.
@@To.Si.Ma. Really? Interesting! Thanks! Where did you learn that?
@@MikeWiest research. I read it some years ago. I thought as well he would have played P90s. - So far as I know Les Paul and a EHX triangle Big Muff just on one to add sustain. In the transcripts there is a rotary pedal symbol which you can hear in the recordings but I don t know which model he used.
Later he played those expensive custom pedals (Cornish).
I was in high school when Smooth came out. There wasn't a lot of Latin music on mainstream radio from what I recall, and as a trombone player at the time I enjoyed hearing the horn parts. Also, your Rob Thomas impression sounds kinda like my Scott Stapp impression.
dude, I thought "I have to see a video breaking down some Santana" so I go to RUclips for a video. Boom, YOU. I liked it and wanted more. Thought I ought to check the date to find how the possibility for more Santana talk from you. Now you have me waiting for more. thank you.
You need to have a show or a podcast sir. You have phenomenal gift/knack for putting together, thoughtful, engaging intelligent content for musicians/music lovers.
Your Rob Thomas sounds like a country singer.
Favorite song will forever be They All Went To Mexico. Willie Nelson did an amazing job singing as usual
Santana was a wise businessman, so was Geffen. Wisdom is most important. Santana just did what no one else was doing.
great vid, would love a part 2!
I was about 10 when Supernatural came out. I bought it right away and probably listened to that album every day for about 4 years. Santana is one of those guys that he could be featured in a totally different genre unannounced and you would still instantly know it was him playing X part. I can say that about very few guitar players.
Love this style of video
I love your content, man!
How are your titles so darn ENTICING?!?!?!? Such GREAT content on this channel :D
I consume ton of RUclips guitar content, and I have to say yours is among the top tier stuff… Keep it up
I went to an art school and in my senior year we played jungle strut off santanna 3 and it was the craziest thing ive ever had to learn and play with a band it was so much fun quoting famous santana licks in the call and response solo and people really digged it bc I nailed his tone perfectly like it's the one time I felt gear mattered not because it made me play better it gave me a mood that inspired me to practice relentlessly so that when I stood their in that small bar with my whole family watching me hit that feed back sustained lick from Europa everyone knew I'd loved what I was doing with myself
Clever episode Mike… impressed…
Whenever “Maria, Maria” comes up, I’m completely losing it. I can’t help it. I’m not even into rnb (any more) but I love this song so much. I fall down on my knees and play air guitar. Well, if no actual guitar is available. There’s no water to put out the fire. 🔥🤘
Maria Maria is such a great song. Rhythmically and the solos. Carlos did his thing on there.
Just posted a comment about this - when I was 5 I listened to the record (yes the record) of Maria Maria and loved the guitar. Step father showed me his supernatural CD and I was hooked. Track 5 was Smooth and I remember one day playing it over and over for hours. My first memory of rock music
Edit: I meant the West Side story record, which contained Maria Maria
Thanks for a very interesting and clearly presented video, the first Santana song I heard was in 1970 (yes I’m that old). It was “Treat”on his first album, and it has remained an all time favorite despite the numerous beautiful songs he composed.
Yooo part 2 please my guy!!!
Deffo want a part 2. This is awesome 👌 p.s could you do a video on Prince as his playing is unreal and is more to the ear than you think 😉
Yes please a part 2
That nostalgia thing you said about spotify wrapped actually makes a lot of sense. I mainly had songs that I listened to at the beginning of the year which didn't make a lot of sense since I listened to a lot more music later in the year
Add a part 2🙏🏽🎸🎸🎸
I’m proud my grandfather taught Carlos his first chord! Actually that’s a lie 😂 not a lie though, your Rob Thomas impression is the best one I’ve ever heard! It’s also the only one I’ve ever heard
Cool video! 😃 one of the things I find interesting about Carlos Santana, is that he was somewhat involved with two of the biggest names in modern music. Mesa Boogie, and Paul Reed Smith, it was Carlos that gave the "Boogie" in Mesa amplifiers and Carlos was one of the first famous guitarist to purchase a PRS guitar. Helping the two companies establish themselves. Thank you! Peace! ☮
More!!!!
Part 2!!! I think Black Magic Woman or Oye Como Va are my faves but the new ish is really great too!
Part 2. More please.
Santana, from origin Mexican goes a long way back. In latin music the harmonic minor is often used to highlight the dominant going back to the Tonic. Over E7 (-9 -13) you could use the phrygian dominant ( the 5 of Ami harmonic) E F G# A B C D E. Certainly one of my favourite scales with nice alterations.
Rob Thomas impression: legit
Europa is my favorite instrumental of his, second only to riviera paradise by SRV.
Dude, you've got that Rob Thomas impression down! 😆
I love when people explain why Carlos Santana is such a badass for simple people like me who don't understand music theory.
Please do more lol
Part two please sir!!
Great video. I hope there is or will be a part 2. I love Supernatural but for my 2 cents, the best Carlos is from the 70s. Santana III, Caravanserai, Lotus, Welcome, Borboletta, Amigos, Festival, Moonflower - all masterpieces.
Had to revisit this vid and say Europa is hands down GOAT status alone! Omfg never heard such culmination of skill and talent.
Part two please!
Great breakdown. Your unconscious knows why it is good, but it is great to see how the conscious mind can break it down
It’s tough to sound like Carlos Santana he’s got that Latin feel
Would love to hear more about Maria Maria. That video made me buy a prs… 20 years later lol
Part II yes 😊
He has a course on Masterclass. It's good. It's like, he's talking in riddles the whole time but you get what you get out of it. And the next pass through you get something different.
New sub here, like your content yoe
Thanks!
Part 2!!! My favorite song is The Sensitive Kind on Zebop album with the one and only, Alex Ligertwood!!!
Of course, he played *Woodstock* the week after their debut album was released and *Black Magic Woman* is still probably his most played song on radio. My favorite Santana album is *Blues for Salvador,* but I'm just discovering (even after all these years!), his more jazz-fusion collaboration with artists like *Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter* and *Tony Williams* on *The Swing of Delight,* which I ordered tonight. Also, he teamed up with fusion pioneer *John McLaughlin* for "Love, Devotion, Surrender," another incredible release that shows the more jazz-rock fusion side of Santana (my favorite side). After decades, I still think *Samba Pa Ti* is still one of the most beautiful guitar instrumentals, up there with *Gary Moore's The Loner.*
The Montgomery and Coltrane influence on his early records is interesting too.
part 2 please
I heard about Carlos Santana 68 yes 1968 I was 10
Just subscribed. Feel free to add covers in your videos bro. Would like to see you shred.
Hi Mike, Prior to the PRS were Carlos SG, Les Paul, and VERY notably - Yamaha years - arguably a much better era for Carlos. Favorite albums are better than favorite songs: Festival, Borbelletta; but any album is excellent.
PART Bro!!!!
Santana is the GOAT
I love Carlos and his music. Listening to him talk can often be an adventure in itself also. Sometimes I ask myself why he always' seems to wear a hat.
Does he have a going bald issue? For the record I'm bald, well, I cut it all off so my growing bald spot is less noticeable. Man, you sound like Carlos? As usual, I learn about guitar through you. Finally I think that Latin feel really distinguishes him from many guitarists here in the US especially. I have 3 images of Carlos that come to mind. 1, Prince loaning him his guitar and Carlos getting down with it. 2, Carlos at Woodstock 3. Carlos and John McLaughlin each dressed in all white standing next to each other jamming on some TV show back in the day.. Love Black Magic Woman. Oye como va....
Love the content hate the constant cuts
So here’s my origin story - my step father is Spanish, and owned records and CDs a while ago - when I was 5 I would listen to “the west side story” record and play Maria Maria (which had Santana in it). My step dad told me to listen to Supernatural because it was a Santana record. Couldn’t stop playing smooth over and over and over again. My first memory of being like “Hey… THAT.. whatever that is… that’s what I like”
Thank you.
smooth is a great song along with "put your lights on" with Everlast
I love Santana! He played at Woodstock for Pete's sake. How did you get get the tones you did for this video and What is your opinion on Santana sound? I understand that it's bass roll off as opposed to a treble boost but that's just what I've heard
Hi Mike, your channel has steadily progressed into a must see! I’m enjoying the longer episodes! Kudos to you.
Santana songs, sorry, way to many to list!! In a far past time, the band I was in opened every nite with a long instrumental off hie Caravanseri album. A super warm up song!!
Keep up the good work! Check me out if you like old over the hill musicians 😱😆
hi! is that LP a "tribute" model ???? it sounds amazing !!! ... i got one but is soooo moisy .... did you kept the original pickups or have you "upgraded" ...
Mine ... doesnt sound soo good ... well maybe its me .... not the guitar ... eheheh ...
Great vids
Greetings from PORTUGAL
My favorite Santana song is Corazon espinado
i have the same les paul model u got there
Maria Maria if my favorite of Santana Wycliffe jean was a beast back then..
Dude, do one on Kirk hammet vs mustaine vs Kerry king vs anthrax lead
Is that the same tone as ‘Still got the blues’ by Gary Moore ? Sounds like you could easily transition into either song.
Wait, that wasn’t actually Rob Thomas? Didn’t even realize it was an impression
I know. I heard the voice without seeing the video. :-)
unrelated but are the guitar hangers on the wall new or am i misremembering?
Black Magic Women, Growing up in South Louisiana, it was always on n the early 80s.
Part 2 me please
Santana at Woodstock. Listen to how much better his tone is with the SG, than with the PRS.
Milagro was his absolute best album.
Thumbnail looks like you have devil horns from the red strat on the wall
This video is awesome! It did not seem like you just do videos for followers and clicks at all!
Thats why Miles loved him.
Carlos is an original.
Anthony Fantano: "best teeth in the game"
This guy: 🤓
Santana became famous in Woodstock
I'm sure you wouldn't take offense if I point out that you still didn't quite match the lick the way Santana does it because nobody really does...he had a perfect amount of restraint and delay in certain notes...by the way...have you heard of Johnny Lang? He's not really talked about but he's pretty dang great at what he does
His first album was released in 1969.. completely absurd
subbed for rob thomas
Bor looks like Erkle😭
Give me part 2, make it real, or else forget about it.
....and Carlos has helped other very important musicians like John Lee Hooker in the early 90's. He is more on the spiritual side of music these days and he has been famous for far too long in contrast to other important music figures of the 20th century.
Seeing I'm a boomer there are so many of Carlos' pieces but Blues For Salvador has so much feeling with interesting production. Here is a RUclips video, not the greatest resolution
ruclips.net/video/7yOVk8HdPqo/видео.html Check out his three finger pick grip. Love your work mate.
Gus Fring?!!
@BarstoolSportsbook-Tellgram-me imagine being an online scammer
I thought dis is khabi channel
Just two minor objections here: first: Carlos has never been the most famous guitar player in the world. And second: Carlos has never been the most famous guitar player in the world. Technically, yes, that's the same objection. But it's such a crucial point here that it seems worth repeating.
it's videos like this that remind me of how stupid playing guitar is and how much time i've wasted doing it
Gawd I love Carlos but gawdam I hate "Smooth."
He's OK, but when was he ever thought of as the most famous guitarist in the world?
Talk talk talk……..don’t touch the guitar……
Pro tip. When seeking good guitar music, stay away from pop music.
Wait, that wasn’t actually Rob Thomas? Didn’t even realize it was an impression
