Harley Sportster vs. Dyna! A Beginner's Perspective Side By Side Comparison
Today I'm bringing you a very brief side by side comparison and beginner's perspective on the Harley Davidson Sportster vs. Harley Davidson Dyna. This is not a comprehensive/in depth over view, but I may do one of those in the future. When it comes to the Harley Davidson motorcycles, these are two very popular choices for beginner riders. Lots of people hear the two names thrown around, "Get a sportster!" or "Buy a dyna!" but many people have no idea what the difference is between the two (at least I didn't :) Hope this video helps!

Stay tuned for a more in depth comparison video!! Thanks for all the support!
I think you are right when you talk about someone being a bit bigger might feel different. I have just started riding recently and while the sportster in no way was to hard to handle or that I didnt feel in control size wise of the bike, I am 6'4 and 240lbs. When I sat on the my dyna street bob for the first time it was amazing and soo much more comfortable for me. I felt like I had more control as the bike fit me so much better. I know a fair few experienced riders who say the longer you ride you will find your "motorcycle balance" eventually and riding a bigger bagger wont be a problem. I currently definitely do not feel comfortable on a bagger.... but one day! Haha
Love to hear newer riders give opinions on different bikes. The H-DS do have something that the other manufacturer's lack. But the Honda and Triumph are easier ( though my observation) for you to control. What they lack in personality they make up in easier to ride. Keep up the good work.
I aquired a 1994 1200XLH Sporty almost two years ago and i absolutely love it! The ho eymoon never ends!
Never rode the Dyna though, I look forward to trying....
I really liked hearing your perspective on these bikes! I’m looking to buy a Harley and am in the process of picking out which one is a good fit for me. You are right, Harleys have a different feel and sound. They have soul. Great review 👍🏼
I chose a 2009 dyna fatbob as my first bike. Most of my friends who ride said my riding skills would outgrow the sportster too quickly because the bike lacks the power. Plus I want to take longer trips than just riding around town. Bigger gastank, more power. More comfortable
But yet the sportster faster
@@troyschmitt1328they said more power, not speed. These are 2 different things
@@troyschmitt1328says you in your dreams of pure fantasy .. put up or shut up.... Bet me all your money .as you claim I am wrong That I say an Evo sportster will never out run a twin cam Dyna
@@donniebaker5984 stock maybe. a 1275 sportster with an aftermarket air cleaner, exhuast and dyno? yeah blowing the rest of the harley line off the road.
@@gaston4269no it won't
Great video 👍. Do you plan on taking any rider safety courses?
If the Dyna was lowered in the front and rear would that boost your rider confidence with it?
I'm on the shorter side at 5'7 and like to hoon around when it's "safe", so my Sportster 1200 feels perfect to me.
Look at that little boy grow😊
He's so big and awake!!
So cute 😍
It was like yesterday you where at the hospital and I looked at Jon's video when he was
obviously worried, I'am so happy that you'r doing great now!👍😅
Hmm...
Does this mean that i've been along for a while now🤔😁
I’m an overweight middle aged guy. Bought the Softail Standard (closest thing I can come to a new Super Glide). It feels so much more nimble and sporty than my Heritage did. It fits me better (I’m 5’7”). I would pick the Dyna over the Sportster for the ride quality and performance, as I like to stay out four or five hours when I ride - unless I could have more than one bike.
I have a forty eight… less then a year. I want the dyna lowrider. The forty eight has been a dream so far. Love the torque but the tank is to small for long distance and want more power.
Baby August 😍. And yeah, we'd difinitely choose the Sportster to learn on as a new rider. We'll be watching the more in depth comparison in the future if you decide to do it.
👨👩👧 ❤
Jackie : this Dyna is very special (high bars, high suspensions...) Try a new "Dyna" Low Rider, you'll feel more confident...
Just watched vid and subscribed to your channel. Always try and watch the sportster dyna comparison vids when I stumble across them. Me, I'm a husband, father and grandfather living in the foothills in SC and I ride a 2005, xl1200C. Had a Road King before that. But I love my Sportster and would not ride anything else! It's such a blast to ride! Besides the Sportster is the Dyna's daddy!
Awesome! This was my next question, after Bolt VS Sportster!
I've never owned a Sporty but I have ridden some. I always thought the seat was higher on Sportys than Dynas, but yours is clearly lower. Was it lowered? I've had 3 Dynas and thought they were great bikes. Except for a couple of soft tail models I thought the Dynas had lower seats than other Harleys. The Sportys are a bit lighter so that makes them a good beginner bike. You're really improving you skills and your knowledge about bikes. Keep it up!
I think it's the seat upgrade that Jon put on the Dyna. Those saddlemen seats sit higher than a le pera or stock seat.
@@philkwon81 Maybe that's it!
@@EasyRiderGreg yeah I've been researching the saddlemen seats heavily because it's a really pricey investment. everyone says it sits a lot higher and doesn't give that much with wear.
@@philkwon81 I've never sat on 1, but word is they are not soft. Hard is the word I hear and read all the time.
I personally would chose the dyna but as you know everyone is different. In my opinion both bikes are so customizable and can be set up close to the same stance and rider triangle. If Jon comes across another good deal dyna it could be set up to better fit you it could be night and day difference between the two
Have Jon take ya to the Harley dealer and ride a new soft tail heritage , such a soft ride mine is a 2019
That would be fun!!
Is your Sportster an 883 or 1200? I'm looking for the larger one, as I am a big guy. But I still want something easier for a beginner to ride.
And Thanks Jackie!
Softail Standard
When (if) you start to ride properly and not just pooling around near home, you will find that the Sporty will seem small and not for long distance work as it vibrates more compared to the bigger bikes as it revs higher and the engine is not balanced properly. You will get numb hands on the Sporty if you ride above 65mph for very long and your ass will also go numb. You can't carry as much on a Sporty if you go camping etc either but they are better for local work. I have a Sporty and a Dyna - the Dyna feels softer than the Sporty so it is more comfortable for distance work, like over a hundred mile trips..... the Sporty feels 'top heavy' compared to a Dyna but has better handling as it has more ground clearance and is lighter and so easier to throw around.
Love the 80s music
Hey Jackie, I've been wanting to get a saddlemen seat for my sportster just like Jon has on the Dyna. How would you compare that seat to the iron 883 stock seat?
Dude. I was JUST looking at the same seat for mine 🤣. I ran out to the garage so I can make sure I get this right...the saddlemen seat might be a smidge firmer, but I love the shape and how it feels sitting in it! The little lip up in the back adds a little back support. Plus wheelies 🤷🏼♀️ (if you're crazy like Jon, but I am not).
You might like the XL 1200 it's a mini Dyna
I would love to try one!! I'll keep an eye out for a good deal. Thanks for watching!
So true and has plenty of power especially adding the basic stage 1 upgrade. Terrific bike and you can’t out grow it either.
my problem with owning a sportster (had a 2006) was the suspension was crap even after updating the rear shocks and seat....
The Dyna looks badass, but the Sportster is so pretty. Is it a Sportster Roadster (1200) or is it the Iron 883?
I totally agree!! It's an Iron 883.
Jackie's Moto Garage Thanks! Might boil down to the 883 vs CB1100 for my first bike :)
@@MadLadsAnonymous I'll need to do that video next! Those two are my current favorites!!
About my last comment I meant my wife rides with me on the same bike on our trips but she is learning on a 2019 streetmaster we didnt think it out very well but I think she'll be ok thanks for the videos I watch Jon's also motorcycle family
I’m getting the dyna as my first bike looked at sportster and it just couldn’t keep my attention wouldn’t be as happy as if I got the dyna
I'm glad you found what you like!! Jon absolutely loves the Dyna!! You gotta get what you love or you're not going to be excited about riding. Ride safe and thanks for watching!
Different risers and bars Dyna , would make very big change in comfort, 🙂
The Sportster is lighter, quicker, .responsive, .i.e., more fun. The Dyna is bigger, slower, less responsive, I.e., less fun.

People keep calling sportsters and diners beginner bites but they're actually the fastest Harleys

The Street Bob is good for a beginner.
Do a Sportster Roadster!
Between those 2 I would choose the CB1100......
🤣🤣🤣 Loved the CB1100!!!

It was obvious. Your confidence is building, that bike helps riders to get that way. Most HD riders my age and older all started on Hondas of one kind or another. Even if they won't admit it!
@@upsidedowndog1256 See. This is the kind of stuff I love hearing from experienced riders! I never would've known. I'll definitely practice more on the Honda. I can definitely see how it helps build confidence!
