STOP using a Wooly Bugger (TRY THIS)

- This is the golden retriever originally invented for bass and pan fish. It has found its place in my home waters as one of the most successful flies for trout and salmon. I highly suggest giving it a try instead of a wooly bugger. It's easier to tie, holds up to more damage, and is arguably more productive. If you want me to tie some for you. You can submit a custom order on my website. #shorts #flyfishing #fishing #fish

i know absolutely nothing about fishing yet i’m obsessed with these videos
the words are very silly I love it
I feel ya. Im not into the "so satisfying " videos, but after watching these I get it.
I thought I was the only one 😶🌫️👍
😅
bro invents new words with every video he does
I have absolutely no idea what a fly is but damn that thread is hypnotizing
@@LOUDFARTNOISESI wonder if they like fish sticks
@@Dudesunperfect I'll be the guy. Whatsa fish stick?
@@Dudesunperfect fucked that up. I love fish sticks.(this is more of an un person joke. Doesn't translate so well over text)
The Golden Retriever is popular here in Northern Virginia.
Oh cool I dont see this one used that much in most other places
I was gonna say I use these in VA as well! Deadly pattern. And very easy to tie
No idea how to fish. No idea what a fly is. Dad hates fishing and refuses to take me out. These videos feel like a part of my life I never unlocked and im loving every single one of them
You should go fish sometime when yoh get old enough its like the onoy thing i do in my freetime i love it
Ayo bro lets go some time
Damn, pardner, I'd take you.
There are probably clubs you could join, or other ways to go afield.
Absolutely love these videos just bought my first rods (just beginners stuff) going out this weekend for the first time thanks to this channel 😂
You'll love it, good luck!!
Best advice I can give you is to keep your wrist locked. Not in an uncomfortable way but so you are holding the base of your rod in towards your forearm. It will help a lot with keeping your rod it a nice upward position so you aren't using it like a whip. Once you get the casting down, you never want to go back to a normal pole haha
Best advice I ever adhered to regarding fly casting was to practice on my lawn. I tied on a piece of tissue paper for a fly and started casting. No flies lost or eyes - come to think of it, just a lot of safe practice.
It's just a golden wooly booger lol 😂 but they do work I caught my biggest rainbow at Bennet springs thus year and mounted it myself 3lb 2oz dnt think I'll ever beat that but wish me luck but I still love your vids man keep it up not hating by anymeans
Honestly that’s essentially what it is. But the title is top notch 👌. just gets a different name because the materials used are enough to warrant a new name according to orvis. Great pattern though! Hopefully it gets you a even bigger one next year!
@@MainelyFlies ahh I see I didn't know tje different names of the materials would have it being based a different fly lol but I'll try and catch a bigger one during these colder months in Missouri
It's got a nice buggy look, and you didn't even need to brush it.
Why would you? It's not dubbing
There are so many variations of that sort of fly and they are essential when lake fishing
I actually found this exact pattern and color combo once but it was very deteriorated. It was in a tree.
Oh, cool what state was this?
It was probably mine. Every tree has at least one fly of mine! 😢
I just caught 2 browns out of the creek on my dads fly rod
You make these look so simple and such clear instructions. Thankyou.
I don't even fish, but I know a lot of people that do. I really wanna just start making these and giving them out and hope for the best.
Or the list of tools to tie flies ourselves would be great too
Every time I watch one of these in reminded of that joke in community with the florist.
"So, red?"
"No, we don't call it red, we don't call anything what it is. That's like day 1 stuff."
I like your funny words, Magic Man. I don't know why these started showing up in my feed but I am fascinated. I finally know how a friend of mine feels when our group talks about DnD. This is sweet gibberish to my ears ❤
I have absolutely no idea why I watch these videos because I haven't gone fishing in over a decade but these videos combined with the calmness of his voice just sucks me in watching the whole thing 😂😂😂
Also it's quite satisfying seeing him make these master pieces 😅😅
I work at a fly shop and last week a guy came in asking for all that stuff, I asked what he tied with that and he told me he swore on the golden retriever, gonna have to tie some myself
Great wet fly pattern that is popular in the lakes and streams in Tasmania, Australia. I first tied this and many variations about 25 years ago. It has caught many brown trout over the years.
Looks like a dragon fly nymph ..very deadly in lakes
That’s just a stimulator designed for underwater. Also kinda like a balance leach
As a character designer, this is great👍
That flies really popular in my hometown in Utah we have used it a couple of times and gotten many fish
I fly fish at a camp in Eustis maine called Tim pond. And I no joke caught 20 browns on one of these guys in a day.
I think I accidentally made this fly learning how to tie woolly buggers but I used black thread
I didn’t realize the golden retriever was a New England thing. Cool.
I tye Woolies in purple, very effective in early morning or early evening.
I went fishing twice in my life so I don't know where or what fish to use it for but it's still amazing for me. Didn't realize fishing had some art in it.
This pattern is for most trout species. Us Mainers love our trout.
Why am I watching this at 238 am?
Proud of you for making videos even though you have such a speech impediment. Brave.
He wrecked his voice on fm radio and public television.
Why are making flies so intricate? Like, why are the feathers in middle important to add when it's gonna be covered up by the red thread, instead of just using only red thread all the way through?
Love this family of flies, I usually use them with a little bigger heads so I can also use them on a spinning set up since I'm not as good with the flyrod yet.
You can also use a 'water bobber' to help cast any fly or small jig with spinning gear. Works better with a long-ish rod tho.
@@timapple6586 ye I know that way of using them but I personally really don't like it. Too much tassel for me!
Right in front of my house is a pond and I really want to get into fishing sometime
Hey man, I’m getting into tying and was thinking about one of your kits, I mostly fish for wild brook trout and also stocked brooks and rainbows. If you could recommend one kit over the other that would be great.
I would go with the mop for browns and the copper for brook trout. However, it likely wont matter those are both great general patterns that can catch any species of trout or even bass and pan fish.
They are absolutely amazing fly mate
I make them in heaps of different colours as well.
best tying videos EVER!!!!
This is a very basic version of the original wooly bugger, the other version of a wooly bugger has much more steps
I bought a lot of old flies on ebay probably from a family member cleaning out a relatives estate. One of these patterns was in the box..
Do you take requests? Can you teach us how to tie a rusty spinner
Around here A black wooly bugger is always productive.
A great tie.
hey bud. good stuff!
I usually tie my marabou tails shorter thinking I might miss a fish if they just nip the tail, if anyone can speak tho this not being an issue I’ll try longer tails
i need the brush to give it the buggy look
It’s called a wolly bugger and it’s used everywhere.
A wooly bugger has chenille and is hackled. This is similar but different.
@@steveflicker5248 it’s a wolly bugger, same style, call it a variant if you want but it’s a wolly bugger. There’s a lot of fly tyers on here who want to be associated with a new unique fly that they claim is theirs, I’m not having it , I’ll call them out everytime, respect the original fly tyers and stop bullshitting or pretending you invented it or “ it’s unique to this area” no one gives a shit. it’s pathetic. I’m tying flies 30 years and know all the original patterns so I can spot a bullshitter from 1000 miles away.
Your channel has got me into starting fly fishing soon! I was wondering if there's a way to copy a stinkbug seeing as they are everywhere! Love the videos man and I can't wait to get out
You can probably get away with using foam and silly legs
There's a famous fly called the Jassid that would come pretty close.
I've got some Flys that were made before and during ww2 I keep them in a display box some where still in original boxes it's interesting how different Flys can be for the same insect
You can find out by purchasing a fine white hand net 6 to 8 inches by 4 inches at the opening and 12 inches deep. Then on a day of your choosing. Have a friend walk in the water shuffling his or her feet to kick up rocks. Holding the net 12 to 18 inches down stream close to the bottom of the creek or river. Lift up the net occasionally and checking for anything that is moving. Then take a large pan empty the net into the pan with water and take individual puctures of the creepy crawlers. Taking careful notes of each picture of each photograph. Make sure your notes include the date. Month day year and time of day. Include as close as possible the exact location. If you have a thermometer take the air temperature and water temperature where you gathered your creepy crawlers. Then be sure to put your creepy crawlers back into the water where they came from. Then with the aid of an aquatic entimologist identify each of your creepy crawlers. Do not be surprised if one or more are the same critter. They may be in different stages of their life cycle. You will want to compensate your entimologist to make sure you garner his aid in the future. He will be impressed with your through collection of specimens and data and may even offer some advice ton6ou on your next excursion. Or even ask you to collect the same information at a different creek, river or lake. You can create a great relationship. Later when you read the entomologist paper don't be surprised over the smile on your face when you read items that are familiar. This is one aspect of flyfishing that I am enamored with.
@@francisvantuyle lucky for me one of my aunts is an entomologist and another one is an archeologists who curates museums for first nations so I've see some pretty old fish hooks nets the little bone spears with barbs ect ... even spent one summer working with a herpetologist ... and being first nations I can try all sorts of cool fishing and hunting things very few people unfortunately dont experience like dip netting or learning where the fish are during the season for laying nets from kayaks
@@francisvantuyle I uploaded video with part of my collection of old flies just do you can see even though I keep them in complete darkness they have lost alot of color over the almost century now
I've got a lot of fish on wooly buggers
If you’re in Maine, would you happen to know if it works in York county or no?
How is every single fly you make either considered illegal or unknown 😂
First fly I ever tied with my father
Congratulations Mister you are an artist, could you please help me with some flies tying for catching small mouth bass wich are imposible to hook up. Five times going for fishing and no catching at all
How do you tie them off?
My luck I’d make this and my first cast would be into some shrubs.
Maravilloso trabajo
You should put the materials in the comments or the start of the video.
Seems simple enough. I guess you could use different colors!!!!
Golden retriever. Used in va all the time
I don’t even fly fish but I want to make flies
very nice fly Kudos
Made these for my grandfather.
Wonder how true that opening is.
Cause these dats everythings marketing gold.
Thats pretty sweet
Yep. Golden retriever
I don’t even fish but I like your videos
What’s it called, though?
Love these
am i a fish why am i so attracted to flies
They’re so pretty I just wanna make them for fun.
Have you heard of a fly called a app worm deadly for rainbows on still waters looks like a spider
You should do this but asmr
Guys i might be a fish because i really like these things
This is a damn wooly bugger 😂. And theres nothing wrong with it. Despite being one of the easiest flies to tie, its incredibly beautiful when you want it to be. Or you can make it sloppy as hell and have it outfish everything. I dont really fly fish much anymore. I live in steelhead country and most use spinning amd centerpin...buy i still use flies as well as tie up jig versions. Ive struggled with depression and addiction issues for years and winters always been rough. Tying has kept my sanity when waiting long stretches for the river conditions to be right
if i was a fish i would definitely eat that
I’d call it a crystal flash woolly bugger ware I’m from
Golden Retriever
away not just wrap forward over maraboo?
Anyone know what to use up In vermont
Isn’t it just a wooly bugger with different colours
I'm sure it will work
Do these work for fishing on lakes?
Absolutely they will work great there as well
Bruh, that's a wooly bugger. The only difference is the tinsel instead of palmered hackle. Clickbait
Y si funciona bro?
Eh I'd rather keep using a certain wooly bugger. I buy them in bulk cuz they're so good
Poor man marabu jig
This video feels incomplete without a good hackle
You can definitely add one if you like but thats not the recipe for this pattern
@@MainelyFlies I just like hearing you say hackle
I think I will stick with my Woolly Buggers thanks
Doesn’t matter to me lol
Why i am watching
I have never gone fishing👹
The algorithm has decided you’re going to now. Best of luck!
Could I somehow get one because me and my grandpa and my dad and my uncle want to go fishing but we can’t catch anything and I don’t really know what to use and maybe we could try out that because it’s not in any like shop
Definitely I’ve got them up on my website if you want to pick a few up. You can also email me here and I’ll get you set up mainelyoutdoors18@gmail.com
99% of the guys in the comments don't fly fish I swear lol
WOOL + LY = woolly, not "wooly!"
I mean your just missing hackle and its a wooly bugger.
Is it bad i think it looks kinda tasty
I Love your videos #flies
Yeah golden retrievers are completely different from woolly buggers 😂
Soem salt water would be appreciated
I love your videos even though I don't fish. I bet you get hit on by guys a lot when you're buying your supplies lol
Hit on by guys at a fly shop? Probably not dude
@@hung5763you don't get it, duuude
@@kortjohn I tie and I’m in a fly shop a couple times a week I think I do
Are beads optional? Im broke af
Absolutely they are not necessarily only help for extra weight
Nothing more thsn a modified woolybugger
I’ve seen what a fly looks like before. That’s not it.
An easy fly that catches fish. Love seeing different variations of this fly. 🤙
