God Sal is right, we really are back in early 2000 comic movies right now. That really snuck up on me. The difference is we’ve been shown it can be done well and I. Not desperate to see anything on screen anymore.
Silly decision to not use the classic surfer. The big question is why do this? Why use a one shot, limited panel character and not one of the most popular characters that fans have loved for 60 years? As crappy as FF movies have been, the Surfer’s appearance has been the most positive portion of it(as bad as they did it). People love and want the character. This movie flops and it leaves the surfer in a bad place, it does well and we didn’t get the surfer we wanted. Not excited to get the changes rammed down our throats. And not fair to the actress, given how crazy some people will get.
It’s because his story is the most boring in the world. I’m sad and I float around in space naked. And anything he’s involved in you have to mention galactus no one thinks of him as stand alone

Sal’s kinda right, the approach the MCU has been taking is as tone deaf as the early 2000s movie studios.
To your point about movie stars, its like Anthony Mackie said in that interview; Anthony Mackie isn't a movie star, The Falcon is a movie star. You used to go see the new Stallone movie or the new Schwarzeneggar movie. Now you go see the new Batman or the new Spider-man or the new Marvel.
Every company is chasing to diversify to increase profits but don’t have the passion to take care of these existing properties and often get the representation all wrong
I think it's odd the FF are in their own universe. Since Strange mentioned in MoM to Reed he thought they had gotten lost in the 60s. So a version of the family exists in the main universe

Perhaps this is similar to what Sal has discussed before, namely this notion of the MCU not believing in Doctor Strange, so they cast a name in Benedict Cumberbatch (same situation with Pascal and Reed). Maybe they just don't believe in Silver Surfer and the Fantastic Four generally, so this marketing tactic is a result? I don't know.

My hope is that we're not getting rid of Norrin Radd just because his last name is "Radd". If we pull the thread at the surfer character's last name being "Rad" when he has no clothing, blasts nebulous energy that does nebulous things out of his body, and goes around space on a surfboard, the whole sweater falls apart.
Why not just cast her as nova aka Frankie Raye and boom you have your female super hero no reason to mess with such an iconic marvel character multiverse or no multiverse next thing you know we’ll have a transgender Norrin Radd 🙄

I think what bugs me is the show of it. It feels…dishonest? I don’t know, inorganic. Here’s my go to example of when I feel a company does something as a move and not just due to genuine story telling. When CW was doing season 4 or 5 of Arrow, they had a comic con panel to announce things. One of the things they announced was Mister Terrific. The way they did this felt gross. I remember them saying, paraphrasing: “we know people want more LGBT characters in the show so we’re happy to announce in Arrow Mister Terrific will be gay *wait for applause*”. Now what bothered me wasn’t Terrific being gay…what bothered me was it felt very….The Boys. Like, how people in the show The Boys talk about marketing. You could feel the Paul marketing slime around the announcement. They wanted props points OR they wanted a reaction. It was blatant and exploitative. This sort of feels like that. Like it’s contrarian. Now it’s BETTER than what the CW did there, because they just made an OC do not steal Mister Terrific (made up a character but kept the hero name, as CW DC tends to do), at least Marvel is using canon character. But it still feels gross.
Besides that, they haven’t DONE well with the swapping. Ghost, Taskmaster, Mar Vell. Why do it? It isn’t helping anyone. It isn’t helping the actresses. It isn’t helping the discourse.
Reminds me of how Aqualad from Young Justice was turned into being Bisexual in season 3/4.
I remember when he was legitimately the most Obscure hero in the series next to Miss Martian. A moment I'll never forget from that series is the moment when Robin,the most popular and Well known Young Hero and the official Leader of the Team in nearly every incarnation of this team in The comics,actually hands over the reigns of commanding the team to Aqualad.
Then after nearly a decade of waiting for season 3 to premiere,the biggest news I've heard focused on his character is how he is Bisexual and has a boyfriend now. Even though in the beginning of the series it was shown he had a female love interest.
And that's the only thing they focused on.

@@dominiqueodom3099 This is just wrong. It was a big deal that he was now Aquaman and co-leader of the League, not just him being bisexual. They barely even mentioned he was bisexual until Season 4 when he had his personal arc. Even then, it was just showing him and his boyfriend on adventures with Dolphin. Plus, that version of Aqualad (Kaldur) was always gay. The show even changed it to make him bisexual to acknowledge that he did have a female love interest so at least they didn't ignore it completely.

My thought was they want to avoid Noran being a guy who used to destroy worlds with sentient life, so she is the SS herald they defeat/depower and Noran gets the power Cosmic at the end or end credits with none of the baggage. But if that's the case than all you did was fridge a female character, and get rid of Noran's most interesting character trait.
That would be terrible, it means they overcome nothing and just get gifted nigh Godhood. I'd hate that if it plays out that way. Its okay to have him be a twat, and redeem.

The reality is they are playing politics again, but most want to see the pure Marvel universe represented. Now for me Silver Surfer is Norrin Radd. It’s like ignoring the watcher and throwing in the Orb with Watchers eyeball and just expecting everyone to go with it. I was really looking forward to an FF movie because they’ve never been done well, now I find out we are doing all the alternative stories which doesn’t interest me at all. I just want to see the classic Stan and Jack era on screen.
I'm not gonna lie, I cringe whenever people say a Marvel Studios movie "bombed." Just because a movie made less than Endgame doesn't make it a bad movie, especially if you compare it to other franchise movies instead. That's like saying I suck at swimming because I'm not at the level of Michael Phelps, even though I know a good amount on how to swim.
They HAVE to market it as a different legitimate canon character.

Marvel is pretty much the only ones to use the Marvel Formula of building up to a shared universe by giving various characters their own movies to build up to the big shared universe movie.

My only problem with the Fantastic Four movie being set in another reality is why? If this wasn't set in the "Multiverse Saga" we all know they would of retcon the Fantastic Four into the MCU like they did with Captain Marvel, or just have the Fantastic Four be introduced in the present day. It feels really unnecessary.
It almost feels like they are doing what they did with Spider-Man. We’ve had two origins of the fantastic four so they want to skip that story and go straight to having a fully formed family. The problem with that is. It’s ways to charactize one character quickly, but they are going to have to juggle four characters and show us their dynamics with each other. Honestly would have made more sense for them to have been set in the 60’s Reeds experiment goes wrong and they are drifting somewhere else and then suddenly show up.
For the same reason they’re pulling the X-Men from a different universe: they didn’t want to do the work to figure out how to either explain or introduce their existence (from scratch) in their main universe.

Dude… having genuine criticism of these movies won’t get you called anything. Saying Black Widow was bad because Taskmaster was a woman might, but saying it was bad because Taskmaster was a nothingburger of a character and a waste of screen time won’t. It’s pretty simple.

Silver surfer as a woman is a great choice especially since the era it's supposed to take place in is the 60's. Which would make good commentary on some not ok practice from back in the day.
I feel like I'm more caught up in the whole idea of the Fantastic Four just not being from the main MCU timeline. I get that it's the Multiversal Saga, but could they have not just been from the 60s, went out into space to fight a threat or fall into the Negative Zone, have some time dilation happen, and now they're 60 years forward in time? And sure, we have a time machine now that sends folks through the Quantum Realm, but maybe some other thing breaks it when the Fantastic Four feel like it's time to head back home. It doesn't need to be so complicated as having them come over from another universe because that's what actually causes incursions, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness said so! If that's what needs to happen in order for Secret Wars to kick off, I guess that works, but it didn't need to be like that.
And then yeah, our evidence of this other universe is that Silver Surfer is a woman? There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but it doesn't really feel like it's all that creative either, and why not use one of the other heralds of Galactus instead? What story purpose is it going to serve?

Norrin Radd is an Icon in the MARVEL Universe. The Galactus Trilogy is one of the greatest story arcs in the history of MARVEL Comics. Norrin Radd had a comic book run that lasted 11 years. Norrin played a major role in the Infinity Gauntlet comic event. He's had his own animated series, video game and toyline. He was the title character in 2007s Fantastic 4 sequel. Most Marvel Comic fans who have supported this universe when they purchase their books every Wednesday at their LCS aren't interested in this character swap. Shalla BaI is at best a supporting character in the Silver Surfer saga. I enjoy Sal's youtube channel, but I just want to see him do a video that honors the Legacy of The Silver Surfer and its creators Lee, Kirby, Buscema, Lim and Starlin.
I agree that the change is unnecessary but i also feel like silver surfer isnt as much of a story invested character as spiderman like benny said, spidey is heavily reliant on his gender for the story, as to where silver surfers stories arent. I am really tired of them using a female character as a selling point but i think we should lowkey just try to stay open minded to the change in the spirit of a “New” MCU”.

I mean...I've been out of the Silver Surfer/FF loop for a good long while now, and I didn't pay much attention to them in the first place, but I just figured that there's already a female Silver Surfer (or an equivalent thereof), and her name is Nova.
It feels like Hollywood is changing things just to market the project as being different from the source material with the expressed purpose of garnering interest through that as a novelty, instead of having a substantive purpose behind the changes.
It comes off as them thinking they A) Are embarrassed by the source material, or B) Think they know better than the source material, and all the while ignoring or being totally oblivious to the fact that these properties are popular because of the source material.
This one isn't as bad as Taskmaster, that one was just an entirely different character they put a name on to to pop one or two of us geeks who know the name. It served no purpose or reason. A female silver surfer, in another universe entirely? that's fine. it happened, it is canonical.
But as Benny said in his own vid a while back, Disney and Marvel have yet again thrown someone under the bus, announcing the wrong thing. People are not as big of a draw as they were in the 90's, adding someones name to something means shit, given we have an overabundance of talent out there.
You turn on a TV, stream a show and chances are you will point at 5 people who can out-act any A-lister. People care about quality more now, and just announcing names is not giving them any reason to get excited. So they'll dogpile onto the few idiots who lash out.

They not only lied and hid who Taskmaster was going to be,they removed anything and everything about the personality of that unique character and just made her into a Mute Cyborg when this dude is supposed to be one of the more Consistent and credible Villians in Marvel and a Survivor above all.

Look at how long people were waiting to see what the first Xmen project Marvel was going to greenlight once they got the license back from Fox and the reaction to Xmen97.
The Fantastic Four are another cornerstone of the Marvel that hasnt been done justice on Screen ever and has absolutely Butchered its most Iconic Characters like Dr Doom/Silver Surfer/Galactus. Hell,they absolutely destroyed the SKRULLS in the MCU by removing all of their villanous Qualities and making them the whipping boys of the Kree Empire.
Is it too much to ask that they just get it right FIRST before injecting Female Variants of Iconic Characters?

I haaaaaatttee the word woke...and I've barely heard many situations where the sentiment of that word even applies....but making Silver Surfer a female just because on a flimsy...reason. A gender swap changes the whole persona of the character and you're effectively writing a new character that nobody is familiar with. Maybe all the proper details aren't in place yet but this sounds....troubling. This feels like the same decisions that made people fall out with Phase 4.
And that not even the most alarming thing. They couldn’t figure out how to introduce them so they are leaning into the multiverse yet again.
Were gonna get another Surfer in the MCU so theres your Noran. Hope they bring Doug Jones aka MacTonight. Im not even joking.

My problem is the fantastic four isnt Spider-Man. They maybe had his level of popularity still back in the 2000s but now people know the groups inspired by the FF more than they do the FF, you can’t start switching and changing basic tenants of the story because people don’t know the original context as well as they do Peter Parker.

@@betterlatethannever4529 thats not the reason. The ancient one was supposed to be a Tibetan monk. Problem is, China doesn’t recognize Tibet as an independent sovereign so they would have protested that character and banned the movie in China. Disney wants China’s money so they cast a white lady instead. That’s the type of integrity Disney has. Similar to when they put Chadwick Boseman in a mask on the Chinese theatrical poster of Black Panther and not anywhere else, because they are racist towards black people and Disney is willing to overlook that for money.

I'm just doubling down on what they said, and the thing I'm also wondering is if the reason they pivoted to make it where the Fantastic Four from a different earth instead of the main MCU is because something happens in the movie where it doesn't line up with the main 616 time-line otherwise they would have a Wonder Woman 84 type situation.

If this were true, then one easy way to explain their absence for so long is simply because they’ve chosen to either leave to explore the unknown, or an accident went wrong forcing them to be stranded in the unknown.
Whether it be space, or time, or realities, the simplest solution to this problem is just to use the exact same excuse Captain Marvel used, and it’s not like it’s illogical as they truthfully have very little reason to stay on earth seeing as it’s not being plagued by world ending threats every now and again around the time they would be active.
I wonder in these instances whether it’s better to keep the casting a secret and just let the movie speak for itself, that way people aren’t influenced by internet outrage.
Even though it’s not a 1/1 comparison, Sonic is a reason you let fans see what the character is going to be before the project launches.

Look at Daisy Ridley for example, her career hasn't really taken off after the star wars problem, its the same thing with Tatiana Maslany and Brie Larson as well, career wise, they haven't really taken off as well and if they keep doing this, and continue to write these Female characters poorly, this time in the industry will remembered as the most poorly creative era in Hollywood.
BTW I still don't really like gender and raceswaps, mostly because it never goes both ways.

And while he wasn’t playing the main character, Robert Downey Jr. was still one of the leading actors in the film, which he gain tons of praise for, and even won an Academy Award.

That would have been perfect casting. how about no more gender swapping and no more race swapping and just stick to the marvel continuity from the comic books it seems like a safe bet that no one would complain with and that everyone wants to see. it’s not difficult. There’s almost 100 years of storytelling. We now find ourselves with a new lame avengers, rip off team of basically little girl versions of what we had. Nobody wants to see that marvel will pay the price for that now.

It’s too easy for people to group legitimate criticism with bad faith arguments. It’s dangerous to make generalizations about dislike of the announcement. Or generalizations about anything really.

Yeah, I’m tired of it. People overreact all the time now. But 1) then everyone is lumped in with them no matter what legitimate criticism there is or 2) no one addresses why people might have a reaction in the first place.
