Midnight Suns was a turn based game with an odd card system that was less action-packed and stimulating than most people want in a superhero game
Gotham Knights was a live service game with the live service elements stripped out and it showed, especially coming off the Arkham series which was renowned for its quality.

Also, the controls for Gotham Knights were so incredibly subpar compared to games like Spider-Man or Arkahmverse. While the story was intriguing, the gameplay just wasn't what I wanted
Honestly I'm playing Gotham now and the controls just feel so weird because it desperately wants to be Arkham but it's not
And Midnight Sun there's nothing wrong with the gameplay it just came at a time where people are very harsh towards traditional RPG games , for whatever reason

You nailed it. I assumed GotG would be middling garbage too, only to be surprised it was better than Avengers. Even Midnight Suns was good for what it was, but the problem was it wasn’t really properly advertised WHAT it was. Hell I thought it was going to be a mobile game or some shit, and a different type of RPG. But based on the brand, it didn’t stand a chance being that genre. And you’re absolutely right, Gotham Knights clearly had Live Service elements remaining after they likely removed it after hearing how general reception to Live Service games were/are. So it feels extra lack luster.

The problem is no one knows who those characters are. Like if told my bro there was a game with wolverine spiderman and ghost rider he'd buy it ! But when was the last time they have ever used the midnight sun's monicor?
I’ve noticed Benny tends to say he likes everything. And that’s not bad. But it does tend to make me take his opinion with a boulder of salt, the same way I would to someone who says they dislike everything. Giving the benefit of the doubt he’s being genuine.
I think it's because, like me, he can separate the good from the bad and one or two bad things doesn't ruin the whole thing.
All I really concern myself is how fun it is. I know what I like and I can figure out from trailers or watching other people play whether I will like something or not.
People don’t want just Arkham like games. They just don’t want games with stuff like microtransactions and loot boxes in it.
Both Avengers and Suicide Squad are live service games which immediately turned people of it. People thought Gotham Knights was a live service game as well for the longest time because WB promoted it poorly. When people found out Midnight Suns used cards, they thought you bought them with microtransactions which turned people off of it. Guardians of the Galaxy was the one exception, but it dealt with the fallout of Avengers and poor marketing.
Was about to say this myself. It's not that we just want batman and Spider-Man games. Guardians had the stink of Avengers on it (especially with Square's name attached) and no one knew what Midnight Suns really was cause of crappy marketing. People pretty much knew what was coming with Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad and we weren't surprised

@@hoangdaohuu I don’t really know much about Helldivers, but looking into it, the microtransactions in the second game don’t seem necessary in order to fully enjoy the game. They just give you a small advantage. And I guess people just found both games very enjoyable.
Well I'll tell you what the Arkhamverse shouldn't have done, kill off all their heroes in a horrible Suicide Squad game.
I think that's just one of the big problems, if this was a random elf World game and not in one of the most celebrated superhero video game universes of all time people wouldn't care this much
@@flashtheshapeshafter That's the problem with the story of the game. I don't know why the first game that isn't a Batman game, they just kill off all the heroes that could have excellent games in that universe.
That is like if the Insomniac's Wolverine game, has Insomniac's Spider-Man killed during the story of the game. That would pissed off so many fans.
The Suicide Squad game could have really benefit if it wasn't set in the Arkhamverse.

I think they committed too much to this being in the Arkhamverse to get a marketing spike but then couldn’t back out of it.
If you stick to the premise of Suicide Squad I believe there is a much better final game that comes out of it.
I would have kept the title but made it more like “Suicide Squad Kills The DC Universe”.
Similar concept but not tied to the Arkhamverse at all, and every month a new campaign of characters to kill gets released.
Campaigns like killing Aquaman and the Atlanteans, Black Adam and the Marvel family, build up to killing Darkseid, Spectre, Dr Fate, Swamp Thing etc etc.
And have more squad members to play as so it isn’t so repetitive. Include playable characters like Rick Flag, Peacemaker, Killer Croc, Enchantress, Bizarro etc.
They made the bones of what could be a really good game but then messed up the final product.
I don't even like live service, but I think that is an amazing idea and I would play the hell out of that.
They should’ve made red hood game about him redeeming himself to the batfamily while trying to find Bruce while Bruce trying to find the court of owls
I good take on that would be someone like Two-Face or Hush framing Red Hood for an attempted murder on Gordon turning the Bat Family and Gotham PD against him till he can clear his name

The tragic loss of Damian game can't be overstated as WB Montreal were perfect to do it: they actually write with narrative in mind instead of Rocksteady "wouldn't that be cool and hype?" throwing shit to the wall and pretty much using Mark Hamill performance as the main reason to play those games. Because if you compare Origins to other Arkham games there straight up ocean between how Origins does fake out with main villain and second main antagonist and how City and Knight fumble it. Even with Gotham Knights they manage to give their Batman layers and angles to his personality that it's baffling, add to it that it has clear theme of succession, family and about abuse of power. While Suicide Squad is like most of Arkham games is about ..... nothing. It has no actual narrative ambition beyond comic book references and gameplay loop which it is limited by whole live service model.

As a comic fan what I like about Suicide Squad is the moral dilemma that comes with exploiting immoral people for a moral cause and treating their lives as disposable. This game has none of that. It would've been cool to have a semi strategy based game where you play as Waller and needing to blow up brains of criminals who don't follow. Or even something like Guardians of the Galaxy game, which is the best team based superhero game in recent years.
Honestly, Darkest dungeons is the best Suicide Squad game in that way.

I will always argue people would be less harsh on this game if it wasn't in the Arkham verse myself included, as for the gameplay I don't think it's more of people wanted it to play like Arkham City but more of bad timing because not only did they want the Superman game people are very sick of looter shooters and live service games
Everything else though yeah people aggressively want every comic book game to be done by Insomniac or Rocksteady , and I think it's because of the Avengers game even if midnight sons and Guardians proved it doesn't have to be always be like that
It really comes down to this, there are 3 very broad potential target audiences here: gamers, people that play looter shooters, and casuals.
The first 2 really are different groups at this point. There's plenty of people I know who play one game, because they're designed to suck up your time as much as possible. But the market is only so big for that, and if I'm one of those looter shooter near single game players, why am I going to choose a licensed comic book franchise? Maybe it's just because I played games before Arkham, but mid, churned out licensed games were the norm. And aside from Arkham and Insomniac Spider-Man, it hasn't changed that much. The marketing was also unclear about what the game was, so people who love looter shooters (for some reason) haven't been chomping at the bit.
Regular gamers seem to think a fast one was pulled on them with the live service stuff, and honestly it's kind of a shitty move. Plus, it may have an offline story with effort put into it, but it's controversial, and the game doesn't look very ground breaking in graphics or gameplay. So why bother?
Casuals will be like: "Suicide Squad? You mean that extremely shitty movie with Jared Leto 8 years ago? Pass" Plus if they were mildly interested but get a whiff of the controversies and bad reviews they'll be like "ah never mind"
Don't mean it to be offensive but I think Benny only likes it because it's
A. A game he can half pay attention to when playing online with friends
B. A property he already likes
C. Isn't outright terrible

The amazing spider-man games were quintessential arkham clones, even moreso than insomniac games, and the first one was awesome. I personally prefer the Insomniac games over Arkham but Arkham Knight is still one if the greatest games ever made and i think that's why SSKTJL hurts so much to so many people. I'm interested in a looter shooter so i wont be playing but i dont the story is bad as people are making it out to be

I’ve only played the PSP version on my Vita. Never got to try the proper console version. Ron Pearlman as Batman, Michael Jai White as John Stewart, and Crispin Freeman was Superman. That’s alllll I know about it.

For me it comes down to affinity for the character that the game is about and the level of gameplay . The batman Arkham games were super immersive and they made you really feel like you were controlling batman. Same thing with the Spiderman games. I usually try to look at gameplay trailers to decide if I'm going to buy a super hero game. If it looks like a 3rd person shooter but skinned with super heroes I'm not buying it. Both blade and wolverine seem to be trending on the right direction as far as gameplay goes. If they nail it I'm buying them. Simple as that. I feel like the key or at least one of the keys to a good game is nailing the immersion

My only complaint is the 70$ price tag then the 20-30$ skins and the battle passes. I mean even destiny learned that it was a bad model they started to make the base game free. I'm not saying it needs to be free but you shouldn't have to pay full price for that.
I get the $70 price tag complaint, but nothing in SSKTJL is mandatory to pay for to enjoy the game. From what I’ve been able to find, the rest of the content updates (story content, players, gear, etc.) are free; you only pay for cosmetic options. If you’re complaining about paying for cosmetic options, that’s the individual’s issue, because that’s literally something that can be opted out of.

A great follow up game idea to Arkham Knight would be Arkham battle for the cowl. Having the bat family try to keep Gotham in check without batman and try to take up the mantle. But I would love more super hero games that aren't batman/spiderman
3:41 If that's true, then fair enough. If you're a game developer who wants to get out of your comfort zone and create something that is usually not in your wheelhouse, go for it, why should a bunch of entitled gamers tell you what you can and can't make?
HOWEVER...just know that you're taking a HUGE risk in doing so, and in an industry where one big screw up could cost you your livelihood, you can't afford to put out a game not everyone can get behind.

The Same Capcom team from the 80s still together, because Capcom knows how to retain and treat it's star employees, Blizzard and Bioware do not, so they 100% deserve reticule for their greed and non tactics for trying to appease and retain good teams.

I enjoyed midnight suns's story mode
1:32 main story didn’t feel great for most people. There’s something about the writing in Avengers that just feels like….i don’t know how to describe it. Y’know what? It feels like the writing in Disney’s Marvel Cartoons AFTER they Cancelled Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. So that’d be Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, Marvel’s Spider-Man, etc.. Something about those shows feel extremely sterile, safe, and soulless with how they wrote their characters. And I got the same vibe from Avengers Story as I did from those shows (hell, it even uses some of the same actors in the same roles).
They just needed to make a Batman beyond game and they would have been golden

Marvel's Avengers is the best version of what these superhero games should be trying to do and that's make combat fun while trying to diversify gameplay. Hulk ain't using guns 😅 but like Benny said, they messed up live service HARD.
Personally borderlands is the only looter shooter game i really enjoy.
I play the Arkham trilogy at least once a year just because it's awesome, spiderman too.
5:24 people just overall being done with superhero stuff from movies on top of the failure of the Avengers poisoning the well for other superhero games especially guardians since that was also by square enix let people not to trust anything that wasn't the next Spider-Man game or something that looks good from the jump that doesn't look like it's influenced by the movies
Honestly I think the biggest reason why people are so partial to the Arkham series and Marvel’s Spiderman, and tend to largely disregard most others based on those same characters (Batman & Spiderman), is probably because a legit AAA game for either one of them was pretty much nonexistent up until either of those series’. Sure, there were a few decent ones here and there (Spiderman Web of Shadows was alright, but nothing close to Marvel’s Spiderman- oh and Spiderman 2. Batman really can’t think any that were of any decent quality)

I think the reason why folks don't support superhero games is because I think some people flashback to 90s/2000s wherein comic games outside brawlers were weak or out right bad, especially if it involves a team or roster of characters.

Let me be clear I was hype.m 2 years ago. A suicide squad game where gou fight the justice league is EXACTLY what I want to play. I LOVE villains.
But then I heard about the micro transactions.
And then I saw the gameplay.
Then I said "ya know what, this project kinda sus; let's wait for reviews. I value my overtime earned money."
Then I heard that this garbage is supposed to be in the Arkham Universe.
Arkham batman! The top 5 best media depictions of batman; not only is he brought back after ending his tale in Arkham Knight, but his story is ended a second time by Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn who he made an effort to help in every Arkham game.
To top it all off, we were long teased about the justice league characters through Arkham game easter eggs. And THIS is our payoff?? THIS is how you introduce and kill off this universes heroes in the same 16 hour game??
Then there's the homogenized gameplay. So much potential wasted.

No way anybody will read this comment but I just wanna toss it out there. This game sucks as a game, it sucks as a story, and it sucks as a continuation to the best version of batman since TAS.
I played one of the closed betas and liked it, might pick it up in a year if it A. Has an offline mode (doubt it) or functioning servers and B. Drops below $20
