I think the winner will depend on setting of the fight.
Gerson Person yes but it’s more on katara’s favor than toph. If it was just a wooden ground and no water neither would have their element except for kutara since she could use her sweat or spit for attacks. Toph probably can’t see that either

She can still sense Katara's movements and just hear the "water/sweat/spit" bending movements (the same way Aang was able to bend water blindfolded in "the scam" episode). And again, sweat and spit wouldn't do much damage to a powerful earthbender like Toph cause they're literally "small/limited" attacks
Amanda Weeratunga that’s true her hearing is top notch. But my point still stands. Toph can’t really fight back unless there’s Earth near her. And while Toph can dodge Katara’s attacks, Katara will eventually hit her to knock her out

She could literally bend it and attack Katara with small earth spikes and/or have it wrapped it around Katara's arms and immobilize her arms and keep her from waterbending. And again, she has seismic sense so she can sense and predict their opponent's movements. So that alone would allow her to predict Katara's next movements, dodge them and then do her own attacks with her metal bracelet/rock thing and immobilize her. If Toph didn't have that seismic sense, Katara could win because Toph won't be able to pinpoint her exact location and attack with just her hearing

judeskater93 That does deserve credit, yes. But I think that was partly because she had grown familiar with Aang's fighting style, so holding her own against would be easier than when they first met in Book 2.

Katara and Toph are equally matched but when water runs over earth it will move small peaces of earth same thing with ice. In other words, if katara was bending the water or ice over a form of earth like dirt and it touched it, then toph might not be able to get a clear idea but, she could get some idea of where the attack was coming from. Also, when water moves you can hear it. When ice moves you can usually hear a distinct crackling sound.
I still thought your prediction was accurate and katara would probably of won but, the fight would have taken longer and katara would of had a harder time beating toph. But katara probably still would of won in the end.
Sorry if I'm over thinking it but I'm one of those people who pays great attention to detail.

Good point. I tend to lean that Toph would win. No matter where the battle takes place there is always earth nearby. Even in the middle of an ocean, Toph can raise earth to stand on. And with that in mind, it also stands to reason that Toph can isolate Katara from water by the same method.
With the exception of water flying through the air, I don't think Toph would be taken unawares. Water moving across land can be detected by anyone who is sensitive enough to hear/feel the footsteps of ants. And in the case of the water moving through air, she can probably still detect it from the sound it makes, but simply may not have time to react to avoid it. But she most certianly would be able to tell where it came from and then counterattack.

I respectfully disagree. She can always raise an island. the point is that all of these events take place on a planet. So unless you put her in space, she always has something to work with, even if it is the seabed.
Kevin O'Quinn I respectfully disagree to you, Kevin. Even if she did try to raise an island, it would take an extremely long time since she was no in DIRECT contact with it. If she could, then why when she was thrown into the water when attacked by the sea serpent, did she not just raised a path and save herself, instead of waiting to be saved by Sokka. Also, Toph has a fear of water since she's blind to it, so it would probably make her irrational

I think Mako would lose since katara deafeted zuko and azula and zuko deafeted mako even though it might be a bit harder for katara then zuko and bolin I think would only win if he use lava at the right times otherwise it may be harder but that is what I think

Xcuber13 Makes sense. I think your assessments are accurate overall. And I agree that is tougher to judge Toph vs Bolin, though I would favor Toph slightly because I think she can react to his attacks more quickly that anyone Bolin has fought before.

There is one more thing that he missed. Toph did have both hearing and her special thing more advanced so more loud attacks like the ice ball had this disadvantage.
He missed a major point though. Toph, by the time of the graphic novels, was no longer unable to sense people who weren't connected to the earth. In fact, in The Rift, she held her own against Aang (while he was flying).

Seems like a fairly balanced fight providing that Toph doesn't try to cut off Katara's water supply or that Katara doesn't try for a piercing attack. (cutting through a very thick piller is a bit differernt from cutting or piercing some armor)

It's definitely not foolish but it depends on location. With enough water around katara has shown to be even more powerful than Azula. But if all she had was her water pouch then she'd be at a huge disadvantage. Also if the fight took place at night then she gets even more powerful.
@@m.c4847 Actually Katara is not more powerful than Azula. The only reason she beat Azula in the final Agni kai was because she was mentally unstable. And in the catacombs, she didn't really "beat" Azula. Katara just had the upper hand for a few seconds. If Zuko hadn't interrupted, I'm pretty sure we would have seen Azula getting out of that water hold because one of the most consistent ideas they portrayed in the show was Azula's flexibility and her ability to get out of situations even when she was outsmarted and outmatched (she escaped when the gaang and Zuko and Iroh cornered her and saved herself from falling to her death with her HAIRCLIP)
@Arigato Senpai she already has done that.... In the season 2 finale. It was night when they fought and we all know that waterbenders are powered at night. She also had a full pond/lake/fountain nearby. And as I mentioned above, Katara didn't defeat Azula. She had the upper hand for a moment before Zuko interrupted. If you're talking about a ocean or something like that, well.... I still kinda disagree. I have reason to believe that Katara can't do full massive attacks like a tidal wave or a tsunami unless its a full moon. And the medium/big attacks that she does do take a long time to do.... and we all know Azula is not someone who waits around. She attacks quick and fast and would attack Katara while she's preparing a big waterbending attack
Amanda Weeratunga katara is not more powerful than azula but she beats her consistently because azula is not experienced with fighting waterbenders, and water naturally cancels out fire. In a fight, katara wins 8/10 times, but not because she's more powerful, but because she's a waterbender

(The full moon was shown the night prior the attack on the southern raiders when she and Zuko infiltrated the fire nation base (or whatever it's called) to find out where the southern raiders are stationed).

Man, my favoritism is making this really hard for me lol. I agree with the verdict but it's so hard to let myself picture Toph losing to almost anyone XD Although I do like the idea some of the other comments brought up about if Toph pushed enough earth into the water to turn it to mud or if she could somehow dirty it enough to track it. Darn favoritism on my part lol
Yeah speculative feats don't really work for me. That creates bias. Because then you start imparting abilities to characters who have never shown them.

its katara. katara was always a late comer in fights. she starts low and has to take, she watches, checks the situation and uses what she learns while in fight. toph would dominate the in the beginning, but kataras creativity in the end will overcome toph :p

I think the fight could even be shorter because Katara would know exactly how to use toph's witness if she froze the floor or just if she found a way to make toph's feet not touching the floor. Or she could send boiling water at toph's feet Wich will make toph's sismic sens unusable.
Book 3 Katara is extremely powerful...
Louis one slight movement and the fights over. Tools reaction to movement is almost instant. If it’s a fight to the death Toph wins it.

Not if Toph can't move her body. At that point in her life Toph could only bend metal if she was in direct contact with it, Toph would likely have to expand any metal she would have beyond her reach of direct contact in order to escape an ice tomb. If the Tomb wasn't complete yet Toph could get out if she knew it was coming.

At first I disagreed with only the verdict as katara being the winner but when I thought about how katara defeated Azula in the final Agni Kai, I realized yea your description of the fight is pretty accurate
@Grace Fu Yeah, I think at that point Katara could maybe win against Azula even if she wasn't slipping, since she usually has the upper hand in previous duels, but with Sozin's Comet Azula would win against Katara if she was mentally stable.
Without the Comet though, Azula would probably lose eventually

Comic Azula is an entirely different animal. Just look at how powerful her lighning is there. Azula wasn't winning watch the fight again. Katara didn't take a single hit and by the end had her traped in her water arms. Zuko had to come in and save her.

Again comics are not relevant to my statment, i'm talking about the show, comic Azula would body show Azula. She generated a super chargered lightning with ease and is able to now no diff Zuko while throughout season 3 they were pretty close in power.
Her convicing Zuko to help is irrelevant too. This is 1v1 and 1v1 she was losing to Katara, twice. She's never gotten the better of Katara in the show.
Toph is blindbut she still figured out how to earthbend with badgermoles! Katara mastered waterbending quickly, practiced with Aang and everything. I mean Toph is my favourite character, and she is tough and hard to lose to. Katara is slick, smart, and quick. I don’t think these friends would go as far to a fight involving bending! Rhey bith are awsome characters, but, Toph, is the best :)

I agree with the verdict, but I'd like to just point out cutting through a thick girder is gonna take a while yes, but I think a metal sheet from a door or a hull is gonna take way less time to cut through. this fight is so indefinite, cause either could easily end the fight using their own creativeness. Katara could end it by simply drowning her or covering her feet in ice, while toph could just go underground and blindside her, or even put up a smoke like she did in the earthbending arena to obscure her sight
Waterbenders can break through metal don’t forget In legend of korra the water Bender that was part of the red lotus froze the metal bar with water and turned them into ice And then ripped them off to free her friend so a water bender can if they’re strong enough and have enough water and katara definitely is Like she could literally freeze the water into ice and pierce the metal

yeah i'd have to agree, aang and katara would easily win against korra and mako..... mostly because mako is a huge losing factor for korra's team. while aang and korra are busy fighting, katara would be able to defeat mako easily and then can join aang to help him defeat korra.

The whole point of bloodbending it that its unethical and the darkness form of bending. The only people we see resisting bloodbending it waterbender, the avatars, and mako on that 1 occasion when he was able to shock amon before he took his bending.

I love Katara, but Toph is just a better bender. While Katara is amazing, her abilities are used more for other things rather that combat. Toph single handedly invented Metal bending and possesses "truth seeker" abilities, which requires extreme focus.
Sue.W. It’s not focus tho. Toph could feel the vibrations of a persons heart beat to tell if they’re lying. That’s not necessarily effective in a fight lol Katara, Aang & Ming hua have cut metal with water bending.

What physical abilities do you refer to? All of her physical achievements have been done with the augmentation of earth.
i, too, disagree with your verdict for 3 reasons:
1. Toph has been shown to frequently wipe out or hold off waves of enemies, showcasing her superiority in terms of endurance compared to katara
2. Tophs raw bending power is way beyond kataras
3. Blind peoples remaining senses are heightened by a lot, giving toph the ability to detect a giant ball of water surrounding her way before it turned into ice, enabling her to put up a ball of earth of her own, surrounding her completely and keeping out the ice, while also enabling movement.
For these reasons, i doubt your depicted outcome is very likely. also, tophs seismic sense could pic up any wave of water moving towards her (since, most of the time, it would still touch the ground)
I really like these shorts.They are quicker and more strait forward but still give a nice match up.
I think this is my fave of your Avatar Versus Series so far. Awesome choice making this into the would-have-been fight in Book 3. I think it'd be cool if it played out this way.

I think it is a 5/10 cenario, but I have no real qualms about your logic. I just think toph i quicker to react in a fight and not so blind in that situation, since water that's on top of earth can still be felt by someone that can feel ants from far away. But based on the comment section people are underestimating katara a lot. She doesn't have the personality of a fighter but she showed consistently to be a damm scary one.
Yeah I think if Katara had the minds of azula she would probably be the most dangerous bender ever (only the avatars would be stronger)

I think Katara would win. She always carries some water with her so even if they are far from water she can still bend with her portable amount making herself invisible to Toph’s senses.

Man, what to say? This was so much like Mako vs Bolin for me; it was really hard to decide on a victor. These were two characters I love a lot. I especially like how this was a what-if scenario like you Mako-Bolin video, and even like your video for Anakin and Mace. Well we do know that she has gotten stronger at least physically since in the trailer she very rarley used the recoil of her gun to augment her strikes. That and her Semblance (or at least her use of it) has evolved.
parker maisterra Ruby using the recoil of her gun has nothing to do with physical strength, rather about being able to reverse the weapons direction unexpectedly.
Likewise we have no way of knowing how her semblance has evolved or how it works.
For instance, when she splits into three parts, what happens when one of those parts is shot/damaged/stopped from reconstituting? Does a random third of her body simply not reappear and Ruby dies?
Likewise in the Volume 3 commentary Miles and Kerry heavily imply that there is something *very* special about Ruby's cloak. Given the way the cloak is behaving in the trailer it's more than likely that it's doing that rather than her semblance.

I think you forgot something, when benders get ready to bend they use a type of martial art. Togh is able to use seismic sense to disrupt it and earth bending to disrupt it as seen in the episode the blind bandit i think. Many times togh has also be show to use or see if someone is in the air useing seismic scense. Also a ice ball or barrier would not work as togh could simply tunnel down and out of the barrier. Also she could just drill through as earth or metal is significantly stronger than ice. Also she is able to yous seismic sense for ice that is disrupting the earth or is close to it as seen in the fight where aang had to intervene and turn it into mud.
The only thing I would add is access to plants if you're going to give Toph metal. That way, they each have one sub-element assuming sand and blood are off the table.
