It wasn't really out of the box thinking that allowed Toph to do that, it was her unique connection to the earth. I think she was the only one who ever had a chance of pulling that off.

Like Ted was getting at, because she sees through earthbending, she was likely the only one who could've possibly seen the unrefined impurities in metal which allowed her to bend it.

seems about right to me you can't beat Ghazan throwing rocks at him but you can beat him if you throw a mountain at his ass and Bumi is one of the few earthbenders who could probably do that

I wonder how Toph would fair against Ghazan. Judging from her conversation with Bolin, it sounds like she's encountered a lavabender before.

There is reason to believe old Toph may be capable of lava bending. This said, i don't think any earthbender in Toph's life time would be able to stand against a Toph in her prime.
I think he can't turn metal into lava.
Toph can Lavabend. She had her own campfire of a sort going when Korra came to visit. There were no flames, just hot rock.
So yes, Toph can Lavabend.
All Lavabenders have be very light-sturdy Earthbenders. Ghazan & Bolin both share this along with mental adaptation and soft emotion it's basically for a Waterbender(mentally) was born an Earthbender(physically, really)
And King Bumi is many years older so that he gets the advantage for experience,too
That would lend itself to tactics usually.

"For their bending abilities, there is no definitive edge." Ability to move mountains > ability to turn small amounts of earth into lava. If ghazan could counter the sheer scale of bumi's earthbending he would have destroyed the air temple in seconds. Ghazan has never shown the ability to lavabend as much earth as bumi or toph can move.
Personally, I think King Bumi can overwhelm Ghazan faster than he can phase-change all of the rocks thrown in his direction to lava.
I agree tho In tactical prowess I would give King Bumi a definitive edge. He's shown a level of tactics to compete and stay in a fight vs Aang which Ghazan hasn't shown at least night without other Red Lotus members and on top of that Bumi's patience would win out. Many might rush to take back their own city but Bumi waited for the day of black sun the eclipse to send the fire nation packing. That level of patience as well as his out of the box thinking I think would make it hard for Ghazan to get King Bumi off balance.
Bumi's edge over Aang was that Aang was still learning. Remember, at the start of the fight, Bumi criticizes that Aang was using typical air-bending tactics. But Aang got better over the course of the fight.
I just thought of a couple other things. And i think Bumi would have an advantage mid fight on. Remember Sozen's comet. The White lotus which included Bumi took on the occupying forces of the Earth Kingdom Capitol. As a result this shown Bumi to also be able to deal with straight disadvantageous situations. while ok they had one resident fire bender with them in Iroh they were still facing an army of firebenders all of which were being buffed by the comet.

I completely agree with you. While we can't know for certain, Bumi had probably encountered a lava bender over his extensive life. I'm fairly sure he'd have considered the theory, if nothing else. He'd probably not be too surprised.
Yeah it's weird. The show hints at the fact that lava-benders what semi-common yet we did not see one until the Korra series. But considering that Toph was familiar with it, you'd think there were at least a few of them out there running around.
If nothing else, he'd probably be aware that Avatars are capable of it and thus have borne it a little thought from that perspective.

Antoine Bandele I personally believe that King Bumi being a master of the unconventional, and one of the leaders of the white lotus, would show no mercy and his borderline insane tactics would end everything as soon as he knew his straight forward techniques would only hinder himself. Ghazan was mostly a brute. Any sort of unconventional tactics would be beyond his grasp. Most battles can be won with the mind as the primary weapon. As such, Bumi would be like a titan, and Ghazan, an ant.
How do you figure out who gets the edge in the categories? Also, how do you score the verdicts?
All the old men in the Avatar universe are ridiculously, insanely powerful. Does anyone else notice this trend? They are NOT to be messed with. :P
Anybody forget that King Bumi fought Aang, an expert at evading, and was able to keep him on his toes with ease, and block almost all of his attacks?
I thought all earthbenders' movements were based on Hung Ga. Had no idea this Ghazan character's moves were based on Bajiquan. A style I rarely ever hear about in pop culture....
The foundation of earth-bending is Hung Ga, but Joakim Dos Santos wanted Ghazan's lava-bending to be slightly different so he went with Bajiquan. You really can see it in his style.
Very unique. I have an untrained eye for Bajiquan it seems though. I often confuse it with Xing Yi.

Ghazan has actually accomplished more bigger feats than Bumi, It took Bumi a lot of work to topple Ozai's statue whereas Ghazan was able to topple the Wall of Ba Sing Se with relative ease. In the end a one on one for Bumi v Ghazan is more likely a win for Bumi but if this was WL v RL Ghazan would have all the time in the world to take out Bumi.
And stop underestimating Bolin and LoK characters as a whole(they have better feats and storylines and characters)
Bolin literally mastered Lavabending in the span of 3-4 episodes and before he had mastered it Bolin stood no chance against Ghazan. And Ghazan's death was also a plot necessity rather than a plot point. Overall LoK characters have accomplished more over ATLA characters so stop downplaying.

Ghazan never displayed any amazing earthbending. He just displayed decent lavabending, which was pretty OP anyway. That's why when Bolin learned he could lavabend he was basically able to fight Ghazan head on pretty easily.
I like those little details about the show and the fighting style. I think that Ghazan was "just" an average master who happened to know an ability that not many people were familiar with nor could counter easily, which gave him the surprise advantage in most fights while preventing him from finding enough of a challenge to get anywhere near Bumi's level.

I feel like Bumi would focus less on throwing rocks and more on messing up ghazans foundation and footing (sorta like kuvira does, but much more skilled and powerful). Using earth pillars, quicksand, etc.
For your next one it should be Katara vs Ming Hua during a full moon (no bloodbending)
Also for a cool idea for non bender, do Ty Lee vs. Amon (no bloodbending)

Id say Iroh has more knowledge but Bumi has the power and versatility, he aged like wine and iroh aged like milk lol
Bumi would probably win. Mostly because I feel like firebenders are at a disadvantage against earthbenders simply because the extent to which they can use fire defensively (and offensively, to a lesser degree) against earth is so limited.

Are you use another white and red Lotas members in your versus series, it interesting to see members from both sides to find out which is most powerful. I have watch the Book three season on the Korra series and I do like the plot where the red lotas are going after Korra and the fight seen between the Beifong sisters as well there past.
One question I like to ask about the animation of both the Avatar & Korra series, Are there same stile as Japanese anime's?
I believe all the art of Avatar and Korra was done state-side.
Not technically. The art, storyboarding, and character designs were done mostly by American artists, and most of the animation in The Avatar franchise is done by Korean animation studios. It is very similar to Japanese Amine though.

No matter how strong Gazan is, once he got covered by Bumi's genamite, he will not be able to move his hands as what Gazan needs to bend, hence unable to defeat Bumi.

People tend to forget Mako vs Azula at the Western Air Temple. By the end of the series, Mako is most certainly Azula's equal.
Garry Moloney she beat azula in the season 2 finale. Azula was at her best that day.

True. But Katara always has the ability of blood bending, and if it was a fight to the death, I have no doubt that she would use it. If she did use it, then that fight would be over. But if she didn't bloodbend, like if it wasn't a full moon, then that would be an extremely close fight. Also, another legendary battle would be Iroh vs Ozai.
On the airship, it was shown that Katara was strong enough to bloodbend without a full moon. If Ming Hua threatened Katara's children/friends, its instantly over as Katara would just trump card it.
That is not even a contest!. Kya held well against ming hua and kya was a master healer. You guys think mibg hua can beat katara who is even morr powerful than her daughter?

This is an interesting one, Bumi has almost every advantage, but Ghazan is a goddamn lavabender. It's like putting a master swordsman against a guy with a gun. That said, if anyone could figure out a way to beat a lavabender with just earth, I think it would be Bumi.

Ghazan is probably the most dangerous physical bender. He broke the walls of the Earth Kingdom by himself which Ozai probably would require the Comet for.
I feel like you are holding Gazzan back like he could make a pool of lava underneath Bumi or when bumi goes underground he could turn that ground into lava

I'd give Bumi even more props than you do, and even *this* feels generous to Ghazan: 7/10 Bumi, medium difficulty. I don't see him struggling *that* much. Toph would win with high difficulty, because she can sense lava and trace and train lavabenders and their moments, but not bend it herself, and if it touches her bare feet (which is too easy as someone reliant on Earth), then she loses. But overall, Toph should be better than Ghazan, but in a very close fight, 6/10.
Bumi, though, should win with only medium difficulty.

Another possibility would be that Bumi learns how to lavabend during the fight. As you said he is a crazy genius and a very expirienced fighter so i think he would be able to keep Ghazan at bay while figuring out how to do it
