Magnificent episode. A veteran Ferrari technician once told me the Scuderia was in his opinion, the greatest Ferrari ever made. This is even against all the exceptional stuff coming out of Maranello today. Of which, he had worked on most personally. That really struck me.
Hi Damian, I really like your new more comprehensive style. Can’t get enough of all the visual (and intake noise) comparisons. It’s really nice to learn in great detail and emotionally where these cars slot in between their sisters. Your extensive experience between these cars is really showing. Cheers and thanks for sharing all this with us!
@7:45 the issue is with the carbon headlights, they give off some kind of gas or something and it is what clouds the headlight inners. To fix them you have to split the headlight in half, and at seven grand a pair not many people are willing to take it on! 9:10 if you have the non carbon engine cover it has gas struts 16:45 beep on key removal is because it wants to be left in gear (it has no "park" setting)
I've re-calibrated a few Scuderia's now, the factory did some very good detailed work on that software, quite a bit different than the 430 including entirely new ABS software and Eldor Ion Sensing module as carried over into the 458. There are big improvements that can be made to drivability and torque too which make the car even more extraordinary to drive without compromising reliability. Great engine!
Better than Speciale? No. More fun and exciting to drive? Yes. Last of the analog, old school Ferrari’s. This car represents the “pure” Ferrari experience.
Superb review !! James has a very high spec Scud there. Very interesting to see how Ferrari changed the engine strut on the carbon upgrade lid to a simple lightweight stick and ditched the hydraulic rams on the standard option lid .... learnt something new with that one.
It’s not even the lightweight full carbon option that was offered in period for the regular F430. The scud version is an aluminium/ carbon hybrid down graded to save costs.
A guy who owned a Ferrari specialist garage once told me the Scuderia 16m was in his top three Ferraris ever, and he had seen them all. With that in mind, I manage to find one and would never get rid of it now …. It’s the best car I have ever driven. It is the perfect combination of raw and analogue (analogue dials, a handbrake) but modern enough tech, and with a brilliant n/a engine which sounds better than anything else I have heard, this car has the whole package. Add pinpoint handling, and superb steering and this I just about the most fun you can have with your pants on …. Or maybe even just the most fun regardless 😂….finally …. That F1 single clutch box …. It is brilliant …. It feels as quick as a 458 dual clutch, and gives you a feel like a manual, with that little ‘breather’ between changes …… to me the Scud is one of the finest modern day Ferrari driving cars …. If you ever get the chance … drive one or own one ….
superb review! As a proud owner of the magnificent 430 Scuderia I can only share your driving experience and your appreciation for this car! Each time it gives me goosebumps! Compared to the 458 Spider (my first Ferrari) the 430 Scuderia is raw, noisy, brutal. It's another dimension: the 430 Scuderia is like a F1 track car, you can feel Michael Schumacher's legacy. In comparison the 458 Spider is more every day use, sleek, although also a superb driving experience. I love both cars. But if I had to choose one, it would be the Scuderia. Not least in honour of Michael Schumacher. Keep on fighting Michael!
Brilliant. Your Ferrari series is going to be reference for anyone wanting to learn about the cars and brand for years to come. I love the old school meets modern f430, preferring it to the brilliant 458, contentious I know, in looks, sound, feel and drive. Mechanics at my Ferrari dealer (one of which just won Ferrari mechanic of the year) believe the f430 to be the best Ferrari. I have a manual coupe with carbon buckets, like a Scud, where you “wear the car”, and near perfect for UK roads. No doubt the Scud is the peak 430 but I love a manual, shame they never did one.
Amazing video as always! Loved every minute of this series so far and I really appreciate the little bit of Ferrari history in there at the end. Well done and keep up the great work.
That F1 single clutch automated gearbox in the 430 Scuderia is arguably the best iteration of that gearbox. The driving experience is more raw than the 458 Speciale and much more improved than the 360 Challenge Stradale.
@@aaronburberry4656 He never said it did! Still the Scuderia F1 box is more raw, as he said, and enjoyable as the DCT of the 458 (i have only driven the Speciale). Not sure why, but the DCT of the Speciale tries to be a more raw version of the F1 Gearbox of the Scuderia, by beeing more harsh on the upshifts, and not properly applying throttleblips while downshifting, resulting in almost locking up the rear tires while shifting down. in normale driving however, the DCT is way better and smoother. The Scuderia F1 Box on the fast shift mode is just perfect, right amount of rough and harsh upshifting, while perfectly timed blips on the downshifts just sound and feel amazing. driving slow result in headnodding of the driver and passenger
Lovely, Lovely, Lovely! Not just the best V8 Ferrari ever made… for me the best Supercar ever made! ❤ more visceral than all the ones coming after this and much better than the ones before. And the best: its the one I drove today with friends… Waiting for another round tomorrow. Ticking in the Garage… 😅
The scuderia and 997 gt3rs are the best cars made hal time.. sensation of drive, and sound. The brutal change gear, single clucht is top raw experiencie
The 430 is extremely pretty in the flesh and is a wonderful bridge between the graceful models before it and the more angular, "modern" (ie date very quickly) models from 458 onwards. I love the Scud too, but the standard 430 with darker wheels, and in darker colours preferably, is another Ferrari car styling masterclass. Wide looking (and actually wide), elegant, subtly aggressive, timeless. PS black cars in midday sunlight never look great. Try dusk lighting for darker cars = 😍 (PPS leave the car in 1st and it will beep no longer)
Incredible video! Extremely well done. The 430 Scuderia is one of my favorite modern Ferraris. One day, I'll add one to my stable. Thanks for putting this together.
Call me crazy. I tracked my Scud. Chris Harris agrees that it’s the best of both worlds, still raw but properly quick, and the one he would chose. It will not remain in the reasonably priced column forever.
Great video, i thought 40 mins would be too much, but it was a perfect review of a great car. ps I like that you referred to the GTO as just that, 288 was never officially part of its name, but of course you know that being your favourite 👍🤓
Simply perfect spec, Avio Mettalic with yellow calipers is the only spec that looks better. The valvles opening sounds great. i still prefer the exhaust pops on 458. one thing i didn´t know about the pop sounds on 458 is that they only came on 2011+ models, the 2009 and 2010 ones dont have it, some owners updated their ECU SW versions on 2009 and 2010 models to start poping.
James' Scud has some insane spec with all the carbons, easily one of my favourite Scud spec. I don't even mind the Nero Daytona paint since it's very metallic-y.
As always, great informative video. I was wondering why scuds were often 150k more than standard 430s, sure I knew it was lighter and punchier. But you ticked all the boxes. 👍🏼

Great video, thanks for chugging on with your mission of driving every Ferrari. A masterful car but I think this was the very start of the era where cars were designed to be all things to all people. Gradually they have progressed to today where they are amazing & perfect but very dull and soul-less. Really enjoyed this episode, very well put together with thought and the presentation style treads a great line between spod and joker. You should be on the Beeb. Have to say I prefer the 430 looks over the 360. The headlights on those are so kit car. This car does demonstrate how Ferrari honed their NA V8s up to the pinnacle or the 458. Speciale In a parallel universe Ferrari did a 4.8 V10 engine that rev'd to 10 000 of course . Imagine a road going Ferrari V10 ... weeps silently. They were obsessed with V12 though, kept using them in F1 even when others went to V10. Then Lambo did one and so Ferrari could not see to be following them.
I’m about to put your words to the test Damian and take mine on a couple of big euro trips. My question is do I leave the Cup2 tyres on or switch to something more general purpose?
