It’s a big one!
The Ferrari F40 makes it back to the CarGuys garage - AT LAST! - for an full in-depth review and episode of #DriveEveryFerrari
This week Damian looks at every aspect of this incredible iconic 80s & 90s supercar, including its history, quirky features, manufacture, design, bodywork, interior, mighty V8 twin-turbo engine, and of course how it feels to drive on the road at speed.
This is a comprehensive look at one of the greatest supercars of all time, from an experienced former owner (don’t go there) - but this time in a perfect condition late model featuring adjustable suspension.
What makes the F40 so special even now? How fast does it go and what does that feel like? Is it as bumpy as they say? How easy is it to open the engine compartment? Is there any luggage space? Is it too noisy to drive? And should one be in the CarGuys garage again? All these questions and many more will be answered in this week’s episode.
Thank you for watching

It's touching that finally someone remembers the ingenuity and bravery of ing. Materazzi when we talk about F40. This man designed and built the whole thing, from the front to the rear plate, and it's sad for me to know that 2 of them were given to Mansell and Lauda, who almost immediately sold them because, you know.... money! That's a shame.
A curiosity that few people know and Ferrari would have forbidden those involved to reveal, the first produced units of the F40 in 1987 "between 20 and 25 units" have the same power as the 288 GTO EVO over 650hp and the weight below 1100kg because they were not within the regulations time traffic! But with that these units have a top speed of over 360km/h and do 0-100km/h in exactly 3s with the right tires! I had the opportunity to drive a friend's F40 a few times, each time I fell even more in love with the car, what a perfect machine! This friend's car is almost a daily for him, in just over 6 years he has already put more than 45000km, as he usually says, an unused car is a car that gives problems!! I hope to one day reach this level in my garage! Great content as always!
I had the privilege to race an F40 at Bira circuit Thailand many years ago. It was everything Damien said, and the acceleration was phenomenal when the turbos kicked in. That this was the last Ferrari approved by Enzo is indeed a fitting tribute to his genius.
Chris D.
Jean Alesi was provided with a standard looking 288 GTO with a 640-670 hp tuned engine. Saw a tirwsmoke filled picture of him and the car in a danish carmagazine.
I remember perfectly when this monster was launched. We hadn’t internet. We bought magazines. And this was absolutely jaw dropping.
I always admired this car in the late '80s, still do 35 years later! Love it.
Will always remember seeing Nick Mason and Dave Gilmour F40s parked out on Upper Sunbury Road, when Pink Floyd were recording the Division Bell at Astoria.
That was beautifully put together in all respects, a real credit to the car. Nice dedication too.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Your car reviews are filled with more natural insight and emotion, than any others! First class!
Appreciate that, Ian. We try
Fabulous video. For my sins, I was the owner that purchased the registration number and the 'complete idiot' that sold MAD40F twenty one years ago!! Thanks for the memories.
Wow - what a coincidence!
@@TheCarGuysTV Indeed. A friend in Switzerland alerted me to your video. Thank you again for the memories!
I was 12yrs old when this was launched an got a small framed pic of one on my bedroom wall. It is one of those iconic cars that introduced me to what a car could be just by seeing such an unusual car design. It was probably many years before I even got to see one on television, I'm not sure I've ever seen one in real life, but that image had such an impact on me.
Just a perfect RUclips video!!! Why do I pay a tv licence when I can watch videos like this ! Brilliant
Thank you very much, James
Perfect Sunday morning viewing.
Thank you
Simply the best Ferrari ever made, great video Damian, and to have my F8 in the same video is an absolute honour, even if it was only the engine cover 😂 hope you are well.
Appreciate that, Vincent - I hope you are well - what a day that was 👍🏻
3:48 brilliant you mentionned the F40's Dad.
Unfortunately, he didn't receive decent recognition for his masterpiece.
One of the most brilliant man I ever talked with!
Always so great to hear Ing. Materazzi recognised in his right place of automotive history finally! thank you carguys :D
This one was bittersweet but incredibly well done as always! Truly one of the greatest cars ever made.
One of your best vids! Love it.
Thank you
“Which I’m not going to do because I’m 50” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Another great episode in this terrific series 🤙🏻
FINALLY! 100.000 SUBSCRIBERS! CONGRATULATIONS!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Excellent presentation - Your experience and perspective are superb - THANKYOU🎉❤😊
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
From the highs of a ring trip last week to a very challenging few days at work, this has just taken me back to when I first saw a F40 at the 88 NEC car show. I didn’t really see the car as it was completely surrounded by equally enthusiastic petrol heads and I was at the back of at least 6-7 deep with Ferrari bouncers also obstructing the view. I saw one in the wild around 10 years ago fairly local to me in traffic going the other way and just couldn’t believe what I’d just seen!
This is the car I absolutely must have should my circumstances change to allow such a big spend.
Damian, I’ve loved all the videos in this series but this is definitely the peak for me.
Thankyou for turning this weeks crap into a grand finale of joy❤️
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That bird at 24:11 definitely got a bit of squeaky bum action! Another fantastic video Damian. Congrats on 100k subs! Hugely deserved.
In my humble opinion this is the pinnacle of car design. it is the best car in the world. No car can rival its appearance.. it truly is #1!
Saw one in midtown traffic in Stockholm over 20 years ago. Despite dull weather I was mighty impressed by its appearance.
Great to see the F40 back on the channel. I know you had your reasons for moving yours along, but I can’t fathom how you managed to go through with it!!
And now we wait with bated breath for close sibling GTO! Can’t wait
❤ great video and I thank you for taking me out in yours at Carfest all those years ago.
I never thought I’d get the chance and so glad I asked you ❤
Thank you again
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Loved this .... perfect Friday evening viewing !
Well deserved 100k subs that’s one well deserved play button. I’m 6 years on the platform and only half way!
Superb video with a tinge of sadness that you still don’t have yours to video for our delight .
Thanks, my friend
Well we might have been waiting a verrryy long time for this but damn it was worth the wait.
Brilliant film Damian, the research and work you put into it was really top class.
And yes, you should have never sold your car (I know you are probably totally sick of hearing that 🙄)
Whoever gets to own cars like this and have them in their lives, really are living the petrol heads dream.
For those of us who will never experience cars like this, thanks for making such high quality films like this.
Much appreciated, my friend
Yes,yes, yes. At last the F40 (back). The ultimate Ferrari. You always knew we all wanted this. My all time favourite car . Thank you for the vid
Thank you Damian for this beautifuly detailed review on this incredible car. And many thanks Andrew for sharing it with us.
Cheers, David
I like them even more now. Thanks for a brilliantly produced episode.
The F40 was and still is my dream car. If my numbers ever come up on the lottery this is the first car in my garage!! Great video love this series. 👍
Get the F50 instead, it is a better drive and has a V12. Also you can take the roof off.
The F40 has great looks but it's pretty close to a 288GTO which in itself is fantastically good looking. And built better.
Hmmm...the in-car audio was a bit challenging Damian, but...TOTALLY WORTH IT! Awesome! WHY did you forsake yours? 😩 (Ooops! Didn't I promise not to mention that again!?) 😖 Great Vid! 👍🏻
Just watched this again and what an amazing appraisal of this epic car. Absolutely love the content!
Thank you
This week Damien gets behind the wheel of a holy grail car...an F40. And boy does he love it. What a car, raw, loud, hot and faaasssttt. Silly boy, Damien. I happened to be in Duttons showroom yesterday and they have a perspex window car on the floor. But they are crazy expensive today. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Besides the F40, there is an AM One77, a Huayra, a P1, CLK Black, Diablo VT, and a host of other exotica on Duttons floor.
👍🏻👍🏻
That was an excellent review, and allowed me to get a small glimpse of the appreciation you have for this magnificent work of rolling art. Thank you for the effort you obviously put into this short but lovely tribute.
Thank you kindly!
Congratulations on a thoroughly enjoyable and well put together episode Damian, the effort shines through , a great watch 👍
Thank you, Ian
I thought there won’t be many that will pick up the immense bit of wrist Jewellery worn, to go with a immense car, presented by a immensely knowledgeable Host.
I can imagine this one wouldn’t have been easy for you to do, lots of mixed emotions Damian. Flowing you as I have from the beginning, unless I’ve completely got you all wrong. You’ve smashed it out of the Park with this one. It’s the best review of a F40 I’ve ever seen . All the others don’t have the unique insight you have, you’ve had one of your own. Not many can say that……..better to have loved & moved on to have never to have loved at all buddy.
@@martinofleeds Thank you, my friend
Another great vid, keep em coming, so strange watching them on my local roads lol… 👍
Damian..well done mate..dont change your presenting style one iota....bloody brilliant..leave so many others in the dust...and..looking a lot fitter mate
Thank you, my friend
Still fuming you got rid of yours eh? Great video Damian. The F40 is my all time favourite!
Getting worried about the weight loss Damian your evaporating each week ! Another wonderful episode. ❤
Fantastic video of a superb car. The massive smile on your face says it all mate. The hard bit will be handing the keys back to the owner.
You're almost there , Damo...today's episode was pretty awesome.
288GTO or 250GT SWB California Spyder. The Holy Grails, basically.
Aim for the stars mate.
I had to double take when I saw the number plater on that F40, as that's the very same F40 parked next to my 360 I have pictured on my PC wallpaper from a car meet at Wilton House in 2014 !. Iconic car and design. Who would ever sell one ?. Congrats on hitting 100k. Well deserved.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
This looks like a geniune copy of my diecast F40. nice job 🙂
In the 80's I had the choice of going down the route of Porsche or Ferrari, I collected every diecast model of a Porsche and only ONE Ferrari. The F40!!
The best ever Ferrari IMO and a brilliant summary Damian. Yes the greatest views with open hoods and is an orgy at every angle. Perfection.
Oh, PS, I chose Porsche route in 89, no regrets.
You’re on top form with this video, really enjoyed it
this maybe the best f40 review known to mankind, nice work...
Many thanks
Your passion shines through mate, I’m biased but brilliant video
Cheers, Steve
The perfect video to show as you hit 100k subs. Thanks guys, great video as always. Keep well.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Another great video as usual!
👏👏 Buravo Damian! BTW, congrats on the 100K subs!!! Excellent choice of pairing the Patek Phillipe with your drive!
Thanks, Fred
That was a great review/insight! Follower here from your f40 ownership days-I winced back then when you said you were selling it!
But also great to see such an approachable review that isn't tainted with the reputation/cost etc
Was like chatting to my mate about driving a focus as you say! Haha
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Congratulations on getting through that without tears or anger, great vid
👍🏻👍🏻
Congratulations on the 100k subscribers gents….. loved this one, iconic poster car and a real head turner…
Thanks my friend
Ahh yes 100K amazing well done. Here’s to 200K next 😊
Great vid, quality researched content!
👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome. Silly question F40 or F50?
Awesome and comprehensive video! 👍
Yes. 288 GTO is the holy grail.
Great video Damien. Live images of unadulterated winky fizz. 🤣
Cheers, David
Thanks for great review! Would love to see a speciale (not speciale-A) review on drive every ferrari. Even better if comparing both pista and speciale. Thanks
A holy grail car episode for the youtube holygrail 100k. May your algorithms explode unto the universe. Great job and thank you to the unsung camera operator for all your work to.
Thank you, Father
Back in my 'popstar' days, one of the company executives had one, I only had a 924 Carrera GT. I borrowed the F40 for a day. INSANE!!!!
I drove it down to Monaco for the G.P. and didn't give it back for almost a month. He didn't try to contact me surprisingly (very early mobiles),
I wonder what happened to Ari's F40, used by him as an everyday car around London and Paris, raped by me down to the south of France. It was beyond glorious, I've had some spectacular stuff since, NOTHING comes close to the surge from those twin turbos
Great stories
Indeed Damian, a colossal…….. 👍😉 Pant wettingly iconic. 100K yay!
Incredible. Huge travesty that you don't have over 1M subs! Thank you for sharing this with us!
Still loving this series of Drive Every Ferrari, well done
Awesome video. I WANT one… can’t understand why anyone would ever consider selling theirs??? 😂😂😂😂😂
Only idiots would do that
GREAT - love it - PAUL
Breathtaking machine given an appraisal replete with passion, vigour and respect. Thanks for making such great content. Regards from Australia.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Really good presentation Damien..don’t beat yourself up..at least you got to own one ..👍🇬🇧
Better to have loved n “sold” than never loved at all. An experience most will never have. Great video.
At last!!!what a car !!! And I remember one in your garage 😯 I think that they have exceeded the 2M price tag . Lovely episode . Thanks again . Hi from the Maltese islands.
Another fantastic episode. As different and engaging and interesting as the cars themselves.
Was in kitzbul in '98, and someone parked his F40 outside McDonald's!
Literally everything you mentioned inc the awkward interior makes me think of my (now sold) S3 V6 supercharged Exige. God I loved it. It hated me though! But the way it required total attention and commitment on the road and the rewards it gave just wonderful for a mere mortal. And at such relative peanuts to buy. Loved the vid here, and the car, and the plate.
Very nice Review.
They couldn't even get the fan controls lined up eventually 😅one of my all time favorite cars though, thanks Damien 😊
👍🏻👍🏻
Great as always!
The engine drone is Wonderful
Great video, Damian, and thanks to Andrew. Enjoyed watching it here in Singapore. Cheers
Great video once again of course.,
The problem is that the F40 has a few issues on being a great car and no, I am not talking about it having worse build quality than a 1980s Lotus. If you took the badge off it and just showed it to someone who knew nothing about cars they would say it was a kit car and worth about £20k rather than £2m. The two main problems the F40 has always had are :-
1. Ferrari F50
2. Porsche 959.
Taking the F50 first. It had a glorious V12 and not a laggy early gen turbo engine. Although it looks ugly it is far better built and has an open top so you can hear the engine. Apparently it handles better and doesn't have a steering wheel that is at an angle that it looks like it comes off a Number 12 bus ( Damien called it go kart as too kind ). When Evo magazine tested 288GTO, F40, F50 and Enzo the F50 came out far ahead. And they are better drivers than us. Even Mark Hales in the classic Fast Lane tape "Now Here This" almost got caught out at Castle Donnington when the boost came on mid corner .. "it's really quite docile ! ..... some seconds later ... "and it nearly bit me there". And Mark Hales is not your normal driver like most F40 owners either.
ruclips.net/video/gSWLgk9x40c/видео.html
The Porsche 959.
Released just before the journos at the time thought the 959 would be far better than the F40, but then after driving the F40 said they were wrong. However, I think in hindsight it is the better car. It is better made, it had better technology that would be seen in the future on other road cars such as traction modes, a sequential turbo to reduce lag, and a clever 4wd system that got a 3.7s to sixty. You could drive this down to the shops and then go to the racetrack.
It also raced in the Paris Dakar and at Le Mans ... the F40 had very little racing at the top end of the sport. Also less than 300 road cars were made compared to 1300 F40s, I've seen a few F40s over the years but never a 959, so rarity wise it is uber cool. True, it doesn't look like a supercar as the F40 does, if they had given it the Porsche 911 GT1 body then maybe it would get more admiration nowadays.
I'd rather have a GT1, 959 of F50 any day over an F40.
Great comments, Andrew
Well put together video, I love it really. I would have loved to see the pup up headlights plus the headlight washers too and maybe talk a bit about how does it smell (in the cockpit maybe fuel or other things)
The pop-ups are in my previous vid 👍🏻
@@TheCarGuysTV I'll check it out 🙂
I’m really looking forward to the F50 video whenever that comes out
You clearly love this car Damien. Just buy another one. It's only money, after all. Great video.
Thank you for another great video, what a fantastic car.
20:08 When young my nieces & nephews begged to ride in my almost basic truck. The truck was novel but the window windings were the biggest draw.
288 GTO, 288 GTO EVO, F40, F40 LM, F40 EVO, F50, F50 GT, ENZO - these are the greatest Ferrari's ever made.
Ferrari went on after the Enzo, to make even faster cars.
But, none of the faster cars are on the same level as the 288, F40, F50 and Enzo.
The Enzo was the last great car Ferrari made.
Some people might think the LaFerrari is joining these greats.
Beauty is not everything, when the holy trinity were launched it was slowest accelerating and slowest lap times of the 3 cars. Surely a great Ferrari would not come last in performance and handling. Ferrari also find it hard to find replacement batteries for the LaFerrari, sometimes taking over a year to source some. Beauty alone does not make a great Ferrari.
That last breaking shot...so wide, large tires ,hard chassis , hard suspension,it trail breaks like a mothertrucker and i love it for it.
THANKS D!!
Now mark my words , because in 10 years our beloved Damian will make a video reviewing a TDF claiming only a bleeding idiot would sell that car and he would be right.
😂😂😂
Best one yet Damian, when you getting another??
Very well presented. The F40 is synonymous with Ferrari. People recognize it all over the world even if they know nothing about cars. I do wonder though what happened to yours apparently!
Thanks, Elwing
You missed out a car in your intro: 288GTO, F40, F50, Enzo & LaFerrari. Those are the five most sought after, and the 288 GTO is worth even more and it is ultra rare
Hey Damian is there any chance for you to get the F40 back in your garage or is too expensive right now for you?
Just spotted the 100k subscribers congratulations.
👍🏻👍🏻
I reckon it’s just this car that is the reason for at least half of current Ferrari sales. Brand power. Love the series Damian. Love the detail. Would like a, what’s the best entry (read cheapest, lol) Ferrari these days?
I saw on Drivetribe there's a Cerbera Speed Twelve on the market, if you're still looking for that F40 replacement...
Yay 100k sub special!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Always has been and always will be the daddy to me!
I don’t doubt the iconic status of the F40 but have always doubted the last minute cobbled together vibe of the car, with very limited development prior to its public announcement. No one really wants a turbo car with more lag than an oil tanker, when a V12 is really what is needed. I remember seeing an F40 on the way to the Mille Miglia F40 meet in a motorway rest stop near the Gotthard tunnel - Father and daughter were in an F40, the daughter was driving & the whole car vibrated as they started the car up, the plexiglass glass was almost buzzing with vibration & the daughter who was driving, she had to really really saw at the steering wheel to reverse out of the parking bay. Both were hot & red & looked thoroughly miserable. It’s clearly a car for a blast, not a grand tour. Each to their own.
Great video , my all time fav Ferrari ❤
You are a brave man for reliving the car you regret the most selling it. Leaping over your own shadow for our viewing pleasure: I applaud you, sir 😉
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
BIG Congratulations🎉🎉🎉
