  • The writers gave everything over to Aang to make him the most beloved character - including Katara. However, Zuko was written better as was his final fight. Let's dive into why

it's always frustrated me that they gave aang the easy way out despite all that build up of him having to kill ozai. the story began with aang running away from the gritty responsibilities of having to keep the balance as the avatar. facing the ugly decisions that have to be made in war and accepting its cost to his morals would have been the perfect way to show his growth and maturity as the avatar and could have brought his story full circle. aang learned and grew a lot throughout the seasons but yeah it doesn't feel like he reached as full a character arc as he could have had. great analysis by the way! it's always so interesting to hear not just the breakdown but alternatives to how a story could've gone.

Maybe there is another reason too. If aang wanted to kill him he would go in the offensive earlier instead of running away and he would probably die

I think the the main controversy with Ozai is that he is meant to be the main personal antagonist for Zuko, the abusive father who forced his son to be someone he is not. While Aang sees Ozai as a symbol of tyranny that is about to cause another genocide (Aang is basically facing the nightmare that took his people away).

Yes the fight Aang vs Ozai is not the most epic one but its a really good one and in my opinion your alternative would have been a horrible way to end this
It would have been very similiar to the antagonists inlegend of korra. Unreasonably strong benders that dont make sense with an avatar that should just generally be the stronger one but still just fails constantly. Sometimes making every fight soooo epic by bringing big sacrifice can also make it worse just like you said "bigger does not mean better"

Yeah I agree with you not all fights should end with the hero giving up something great to defeat the villain.

IMO this is so because those in the audience with critical training recognized that the Lion Turtle shenanigans robbed Aang of a true resolution to his want-need conflict. I felt they were equal in gravitas.

Aang should've learned energy bending by himself as a forgotten type of bending that needs to be unlocked in some way. He could travel to the spirit world and learn it from them, or he could find it in wan shi tong's library just like when he found scrolls about the lion turtles. Either ways, aang should give something up to win. Maybe aang is afraid not of ozai but himself, what if the power overwhelmed him? What if he became cold blooded murderer after that? What if this much power corrupted him? You know similar to korra in book 4 when she was scared and traumatised of the time she was poisoned and the avatar state went on full force as if it wasn't her anymore. She was at her most vulnerable even with this much power, and if the airbenders didn't show up she would've died along with the avatar cycle.
I would make ozai exploit aang's air nomad values after being overwhelmed by aang's strength by faking the begging for mercy only for him to try and attack aang. He sees the air nomads as weak people who shouldn't exist. This time aang deflect the attack back at ozai, and then he takes his bending away for good. Ozai always believed that suffering is the way to teach respect. This time the thing he always cherished his bending and lineage and status are moot. Death is merciful let him spend the rest of his days as a powerless disgraceful rat as he should be.

Just reading the title is so true. And zuko is the best character.
There’s no way the ozai v aang fight could’ve been better if we didn’t spend time with ozai. It wasn’t that he was a coward or a wimp.

Aang gets overshadowed by Zuko while Ozai gets overshadowed by literally everyone else but it didn't have to be that way. Season 3 can end with just Azula v Zuko while everything else is moved over at the end of season 4, air.
Ozai should have been the instigator of the great war, the ruler for the majority of the war, and the ruler during the war's final years, but is still in peak physical prime condition despite his old age and Ozai's comet arrives by the end of Fall.
But if Sozin and Azulon being a part of the warmongering equation and Sozin's comet arriving by the end of summer were an absolute necessity, then it can be revealed that Ozai is actually Vaatu himself. Vaatu subtly manipulates Sozin into waging his war using the solstices and the energies from the swamp tree and the tree of time. Vaatu later manipulates Ilah into setting him free and dies birthing his human form. Harmonic convergence arrives by the end of Fall.
Either way, with a season 4. It can mostly focus on Aang and Azula and their common character arc of discovering truths and lies about their respective nations but learning to find proper balance within themselves. For Azula, it's her uncovering the real truth of the war and the lies told to her and her generation, Zuko becomes her Iroh. Aang learns that the "thou shall not kill" code has never existed like he thought he did, along with realizing that clinging on to his earthly tether and keeping his chakra blocked is the true betrayal to his beliefs rather than taking lives. But he learns to balance his mercy and murder tendencies and still understands that he cannot kill out of vengeance, spite, or no reason at all. I imagine season 4 having 30 episodes and on the 18th episode, I picture it showing only Azula and Aang on screen and it was about Aang showing Azula how to open and master her own chakas.
At the end of the season, Team Avatar houses 9 human members: Aang, Azula, Zuko, Katara, Sokka, Suki, Ty Lee, Mai and Toph. All of them team up to battle Ozai together, and they each use every skill and experience they've ever learned to survive the fight. At first, none of them could even land a hit and they were all beaten down instead but Aang gruelingly manages to gain victory.

Meh. Zuko vs Azula was fatally undermined by the entire circumstances of Zuko's sacrifice being terminally retarded. Why is Katara just standing in the middle of the goddamn field with giant columns of super fire being flung around? Why does she just stand there and wait to die instead of moving slightly off to either side? What does Zuko think is going to happen once he's down, other than "Azula fires more lightning, Katara instantly dies anyway"? If you can't let someone else die on your behalf when circumstances dictate, you can't be a leader of any kind, let alone a king.
Also, Zuko should have just been allowed to win. But that's a whole 'nother conversation.
