Must use the medium finger and preferably the ring finger along with a pick to get that twang. Just using a pick will not deliver that chicken picking sound. Much like popping style on a bass.
Two things that helped me: 1. It is all in muting certain strings…I feel. If you let all the strings ring out you will get what you’re describing. You want certain notes, especially like walk up notes that are not your main melody notes to pop. You get this by muting, usually with your spare left hand fingers, or at the bridge with the right hand. 2. You probably have too much overdrive if it’s sounding like Rock. Even if you’re not chicken picking correctly, if your effects are set to standard country tone something is def. Wrong if it sounds like rock. Set your delay (if you have one) to the repeat like a half a second after your note, and only one repeat. Use a compressor, that is the key I would say to this tone, and set the overdrive depending what your playing. For example lot of the 90s Brent mason or Vince gill stuff set it very low, just so it starts to breakup slightly when you hit a power chord. Sometimes I can pull this off without my overdrive on. If it’s like Brad paisley stuff add some more dirt. Keep working at it. It’s wayyy harder than people realize. I hope this helps!
get rid of MOST of the distortion, use the bridge pickup, pick back near the bridge and use a fair amount of reverb and slap-back echo. that'll fix it.

Nice start on a good looking channel. Might I add that it's nice for advanced players if you just play the idea first, just after you possibly number the licks with like: "Lick #1, Lick #2", etc. That way we can rip you off more efficiently...😆
Strings are crazy instruments, take them licks and put em everywhere... oh yea thats the best a guitar could emulate the pedal steel which gets bends in two directions at once!
Man I’ve been there and it sucks! That guitar is actually my first “real” guitar ever. I bought it when I was just getting started after my first guitar was stolen.

@CalebGuitar I have one Tele with a Gibson scale I can do that bend with 10's on it but, usually just slide up a step. I guess the fact that I prefer 10's and I usually play Fender Scale, I normally only do half step bends on wound strings. I have been thinking about trying 9's.

Yea I agree the tone was off for sure. I’m new to this video recording thing and I don’t have my guitar running into the computer so the only sound is getting picked up by the camera. Crazy thing is I have is very compressed, quite a bit of slap back and very little reverb but you certainly don’t hear that in the video. I’m learning as quickly as I can to put out better content. I plan on doing several videos on gear and setup in the future. In this video I was using a Keely compressor, boss blues junior with the Keely mod, boss DD7 for a little slap back delay and the spring reverb on my fender blues junior with EL-84 tubes.
Like the content - but you did confuse me a bit with the first riff talking about Elvis and All Shook Up. I think you meant to say Hound Dog - just for then benefit of anyone who wants to hear the riff on the record!

I know it’s all in timing and articulation, still, like you, when I play this stuff it still sounds like blues/rock. Sorta.

What string gauge are you using to bend the D string a full step?
I play D’addario nickel wound 10’s
