  • Hello music Lovers! Welcome to episode 5 of The Woodshed! due to the tons of feedback and requests, this episode is gonna start you on the path of country Telecaster, chicken pickin, Brent Mason inspired playing. We are gonna jump in and tackle the fundamentals of right hand picking, hybrid playing, finger pluckin, and string popping. We are gonna look at the basic harmonic outline and see what note alterations in the major scale will give you that delicious southern fried redneck sound. From there we get into some basic bends and lastly we get some double stop fundamentals. This is NOT a "here is lick A, B, C" this lesson is meant to give you a good foundation of tele chicken basics. Then we are gonna talk about how to take your own playing and licks you already use, and how to twist them to give them a southern sound. So put down that dual humbucker shredder guitar and go grab ole Pep Pep's telecaster, its time to take walk on the wirey side!! Thanks for all the comments, love and support. Let me know below what you'd like to see in future episodes. Hope you guys enjoy this! Be sure to jump over to Andywoodmusic.com for more lessons, gear, dates, and merch. Cheers!

I can't for the life of me understand how 3 people gave this incredibly good lesson a thumbs down Andy. It's free, it's absolutely top class, and it's extremely educational for anyone interested in adding "chicken pickin" to their guitar playing! I'll have to have a word with Brent Mason, Albert Lee and Dan Huff! :-) Keep on doing what you do - I'm sure all your subscribers would agree that you are both first-class and very classy.

First of all, thank you the lesson. Secondly, thanks for calling us "kids". I'm old enough to be your father and it brings joy to have somebody can me a kid because my brain thinks I'm a kid.
All this stuff was Greek to me not long ago, even after playing for 38ish years. You made it fun to learn.

I love that you broke down the major scale and pointed out the notes and nuances that make things sound country. Until that I couldn't tell you what it is but I know it when I hear it. I also love that you're not just teaching licks but instead showing why and how the notes work together. I mean licks are great and all but if you don't know where they come from and why they work you just know a lick, you are teaching a style. Great stuff I will definitely be working on these concepts.

Thank you Andy Wood for this lesson! I love this style and been working on it the last 10yrs using your approach. The thing I find fascinating is each reknown country guitar players interpretation of all those things and the nuances that make up the sound and style. Each wonderful, and each slightly different. Coming from the 60's and 70's, information like this back then and the tools we have today to make it known would have changed the landacape in major ways. We really have far less excuses to NOT BE really smoking guitarists. I know you insist on one hand you're not here to spoon feed, but to me personally your generosity of easy to follow instruction is off the hook, and I thank you profusely for it. You love what you do and it shows. Excellence!!!!!!!

I have been a rock and blues player for 40 years. I always said this country playing is the best I've ever heard. I too loved some 90s country and Brent. I have been trying to learn it, but never could get those half steps in place. Now I know, when you explained by intervals, my brain exploded. Thank you. I have learned more in 20 minutes than in 6 months.

So, for me being the age of 56, drummer of 48 years, I took up guitar for something new. I'm only a few years into it and struggling with the shapes and confusing modes. I just listen to van Halen licks and blues stuff. So Last night I was messing around and decided that I should try playing with no pick and I found your instructional video. Thanks, my fingers have calluses but are kind of raw today. Regards; Bruce

The world certainly needs more guitar teachers teaching concepts rather than licks. Just learning licks and tabs is what held my guitar playing back until recently when I decided to start taking the instrument seriously.

This is great. For players who are new to this style of playing and those who have some experience under their belt. It's always good to have a pro take us back and revisit the fundamentals. Sometimes we get moving along too quickly and skip some critical basics. Plus Andy, there is plenty of cool chops in your demonstrations here to grow from throughout this weeks Woodshed.
I love that you teach the approach versus specific note for note licks. Thanks again for this channel.

Im real good at what I do but there’s always something to learn.
