- Hello Music lovers! Welcome to my new series "The Woodshed"! In episode 1 I breakdown the guitar lick I used on Angel Vivaldi's Australian brush fire fundraiser charity stream. During the stream Angel asked me to teach a picking approach to help improve alternate picking. This focuses on inside/outside picking in odd note groupings and how to improve control and accuracy as you travel through the strings. This type of odd note grouped pentatonics can be heard in all kinds of modern players. I hope you enjoy the first episode, make sure to leave your feedback. Most importantly, let me know in the comments what topics you want me to cover in future episodes. For more of my content jump over to iTunes, Spotify or wherever you get your music and scope out my albums.
Cheers!
Hey guys, thank you all so much for the support on this new series. What would you like to chat about in future episodes? #charisma
Love the channel... hadn't listened to your music before the channel but I'm hooked... your quite the player... thanks for the time... tabs would be helpful... would also love to see some triad shapes blended with this concept.
You Rock Ass Andy!!!!! Always been huge fan Your an a absolute monster player !!! Loved it. Keep em coming
Andy, I bet your neighbors think you're just a hipster. They don't even know they LIVE NEXT TO A MONSTER! Great vid.
Hey Andy, maybe this could be a topic of discussion unless you already covered it. How high to wear your guitar to still play as effective as you do sitting down. Keep up the great work!
A+
How cool is this?! Blows me away that a guy like Andy is so generous with his time, knowledge, and TALENT to make and post FREE videos like this. Beyond cool.
Yea i am like how cool is he- I am going to try it and I hope magically I can play like that by tonight. Looks easy- i know its not-for me
One hard working Dude. Not sure if he’s doing Skype lessons but, I’d be interested.
“Speed and going fast is a bi-product of precision and control” MIND BLOWN!!!
that's what Guthrie Govan has been saying
I needed to hear that
Martin Lotz That’s what every guitarist before Guthrie said too.
And I totally disagree. Unless you practice something at or beyond the desired speed, the precision and control by themselves will never get you there.
Yes! Total control
great vid man!!
Rick Graham now here’s a real stamp of approval!
Rick Graham love ya dude
Thank you Andy. I'm an intermediate player who is in a rut with speed. This is very helpful to move into another level.
I would love to see a video on the Eric Johnson runs u do going all the way down the neck u have a way of melting them together so smoothly anyways thanks for the video
I truly understand this teacher.. other guitar lessons are like.. do this.. shred............ Ok? Andy breaks it down in a organic way I truly understand. Bravo Andy
Great to see you doing something like this! Awesome!
Yes!!!
Awesome dude. This is great! Thanks.
Andy you are not only a great guitar player but a super nice person as well. My wish for you is when this pandemic is over a world famous band will scoop you up and make all your career and financial goals a reality. You deserve it man
Bravo
Thank you, Uncle Ben!
Very cool playing
YES!!! You're the best man!!
Shawn Tubbs I can’t be, because you are. I’ll play second fiddle to ya anytime.
Great stuff!!
Thank You!! If there was a "love" button I would have clicked it. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this woodshed series. 🙏
You’re a natural Andy. Anything you want to teach in the vein of picking and visualization of the fretboard is what I’d love to see. It’s also likely that I will enjoy and learn from whatever you chose to put up here.
Thanks so much for sharing! Appreciate you taking out time to post content for us on here and looking forward to more!!
Great lesson dude!!
Please do a lesson on vibrato techniques and how to build strength and timing into bends with vibrato. Thank you!
Super greatness all the time Andy!!! Thanks for sharing all the great learning techniques for guitars an more brother🎼🎶🤠🎸👍
Miss this stuff from the old JP FORUM....excited to see what’s ahead. Thanks!
John K amen!
I’d love to see something about mixing major and minor pentatonics and melodic minor scales in fast runs, especially higher up the neck. This seems to be something you have in common with Steve Lukather, but I struggle to figure out how to construct those runs myself.
Hello Andy, I'm so happy to watch this. I'll never forget your performance in Cartagena. Regards!
Very cool idea and very much welcomed, thank you Andy! Can’t wait till Ep.2 !
Wow awesome thanks for doing this, i m already hyped for the upcoming episodes 🤩
Super stoked Andy thank u so much for putting time aside to do this for your fans
Dude, I’d love to see a breakdown of your ‘chicken pickin’ technique. I’ve never been able to accomplish this the way you do it. Maybe demonstrate common chord structures and the way they are picked out. I’ve always been fascinated by your shredding chicken pickin’ on electric guitar.
Thank you Andy for sharing that was great! Thoroughly enjoyed that
The amount of useful information and wisdom here is incomprehensible. It just really blows my mind! Thank you Andy!
This is really cool, thanks Andy
We need more of this
One of the best pickers out there... I keep coming back to this video whenever I get stuck. Thanks Andy.
That hand shifting.. lifting the other fingers when the pinky is down.. platinum.. really needed that!!! Thank you!
Nice one Andy...looking forward to seeing more !!
F’n awesome! Great lesson buy one of the best players around! Love it!!!
Yesssss! Any of the Eric Johnson style lessons would be very much appreciated. Thank you for doing this! I hope it becomes a regular series.
fretting hand: I got this.
picking hand: WTF?
Great lesson! Maybe one day (you may have done this already) talk about how you skip strings when picking in opposite directions. 2 notes per string or 4 per string = easy alt picking. 3 notes... you can't get that so.. my dang wrist doesn't want to bounce like yours. Too many decades of playing easy rock songs I guess. thx!
U will get it just keep practicing the 2 way pick slanting..
Great stuff Andy! Looking forward to more lessons!
Andy, thank you for taking the time to share a video like this! It is so cool to see a glimpse of how you approach playing.
I know there’s a ton of theory lessons on RUclips but the way you talk really clicks with me. I’ve been playing ten years but really don’t understand much about how chords work with one another and concepts like that. Would love to see some of that in the lessons too
Loved what you did extremely helpful thank you Andy
Finally found a guy that teaches in a language I understand! Thanks for being so generous Andy.
Hi, great lesson, thanks from Milan, Italy 🇮🇹 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks a lot for this lesson Andy! Looking forward to your next lessons. Hopefully, you'll teach us how you visualize the fretboard.
Looks good, sounds even better!
As mentioned below somewhere in the comments,,, youre an absolute monster player.
I find myself feeling better about my own playing as Im now convinced that guys like you must be aliens from another planet. Been watching for a long while,,, & cant believe I wasnt already,, but just subscribed.
Cheers buddy!! I appreciate the comment and subscription🎸
The “Wood Shed”!!! Awesome!!!
Great stuff Bro! Would love to see other types of ways you visualize runs. Always the best! Andy rocks!!!!!
First of all, thank you. Great players sharing knowledge perpetuates real music makers and builds confidence in all players. Don't underestimate the value of what this does for people. Again, thank you. And Ben, for showing you how to"internet". Ben is also awesome.
This may seem vague, but perhaps accept it as a challenge, but my constant focus is becoming more melodic and lyrical in my solos. Outside of vibrato and legato, it boils down to note choice and phrasing. Id love to see methods you have used to help build those musical muscles, because noone has done it successfully yet.
Cheers and best of everything to you and all of your viewers!
In all seriousness you did a fantastic job explaining this. Looking forward to more of these videos!!!!
He has an amazing right hand that surely was helped by the bluegrass mandolin. Some incredibly good tips. Thanks a lot
One of my favorite players. Outstanding.
That guitar is just perfection. I’m drooling 🤤
Australia's West coast has only really just heard of Andy Wood thanks to the Wampler Gear box. Sometimes I think great players hold back the tricks of the trade! Andy lays it all bare out in front of you!
cheers buddy!
Andy I’ve been studying really hard. Learned the caged system and a lot of theory, also can play pretty much any scale up and down the neck, but I’m having a really hard time using all this to just make music .. if there’s anything you could post to help put all this together in a melodic way I’d really appreciate it. Just found out about you a couple weeks ago and these lessons are fantastic. I can’t thank you enough 💯🎸👍💪
Awesome instruction really opens up pentatonics👍🎸🔥
Andy Wood you are a precious resource. Thank you so much for your generosity.
That picking lick is the most difficult picking lick I’ve tried it’s so alien to me.
Finally I guy makes a video with some legit content
How come I only get this coming through now (in 2022). Bloody algorithems. Good channel !! Got a lot of catching up to do.
this is amazing. cant wait for more.
I was with u on the first woodshed your blowing smoke man keep it up
Virtuoso!!!!
Thank you 🙏
Hi..Great lesson......playing over 50 yrs and never thought of the pinky and shifting u show at about the 8.20 mark...Thanks...Dave
This was great! Love to see how you do your Chicken Picken!!! Keep these coming man!
You're a great teacher. Came out on my feed, had a watch, liked and subscribed. Thanks Andy
This should be fun
Gotta say Andy, you’re one of my favorites for sure.
Thank you for taking the time to put up free videos like this, it really is appreciated.
And for everyone who doesn’t know, Andy has a bunch of really great lessons on JamPlay that are worth the price of admission alone never mind the dozens of other great teachers on there.
Great playing man! Stay psyched!💣
I just subscribed as I understand there will be discussion of chickens and Star Wars here. Looking forward to it.
Really useful in breaking down the fretboard! Love the way you explain it and kept it interesting 👍 would love more content on breaking out exercises for finger 2+ pinky or 3+pinky combinations for dexterity and control.
A.W.
Sir.....good job....thanks for sharing....most appreciative
Dude! Killer! Between you and uncle Ben, I can already feel my Pentecostal licks praising the good lord.
Fantastic lesson, Andy!
Thank you.
This was good but I like the longer video with all the great stuff that episode 2 has.
Very inciteful Andy, Thanks for the basics . Now just need to go do it
Thank you Andy. Great PICKING.
Fantastic job 👏 Big LIKE Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
This is a killer lick that even a non shredder like me can manage.
Absolutely amazing Andy! Thank you for sharing your wisdom. 🤘🏼
Great intro. I like that you use internals.
This is a brilliant lesson!
haha, i own an old Gator case too, like on on the end, has my Dummyator n Intellifex! Appreciate you taking time to do this! :)
Simple and super effective! Love your playing man! Would love to hear more on your fretboard visualisation and anchor notes!
Awesome video been looking for some nice quick runs and exercises 🔥
Fantastic video Andy - very cool advice! I'm always interested in your "picking" videos, and any advice on building up a little speed would be very welcome. I would also like to see you do a video on pedal steel licks and how and where to use them, and a video on "faux slide" would be very cool too! Best wishes from Ireland. :-)
Thank you, I appreciate your thought process.....Awesome tone!
BenEller brought me here, and from this one vid I notice very cool improvements on my own. Thank you sir! Subbed/thumbed up, I'm hooked.
B. Scott Farthingsworth crisp high fives to you sir!
Really cool. Cheers Andy - working on it!
this is perfect for my level of playing... not super heavy theory that I don't know, and not too intro where I feel like skipping ahead! Thanks Andy, and please keep this up!!!
Thanks for sharing this Andy. I love the fact that players like yourself aren’t selfish with with your knowledge!
Great teaching attitude. Well done !
Thanks for breaking this 'super fast' phrase down. This looks like fun to practice so, I can't wait to get started. I realize I am a little late to the dance on the woodshed series but I am enjoying the lessons now. Thanks Andy!
Thanks Andy for taking the time to create and post your videos, they are really helpful to add to the ‘Toolbox’ 👍
Very cool! Thank you for sharing!
Take some work but its do-able . Great idea . Thx
I need this once a week! Why don't you show us that marvellous alternate pickin work on A Lie? Also stuff like string skipping and how you visualize the fretboard... Thanks for sharing this with us man! I'm waiting for an orange one and you know what i mean...Support!!!
Hopefully 100k subs by year's end
