Knowing he is out there in paradise drinking coffee and on a computer screen like its a video game is scary as hell. knowing there are people who can take you off this earth without you even knowing you are being watched and waiting for their strike . The other drone movie good kill was amazing in showing the difference of reality and dealing with it vs his other staff who just treated their job as a video game in a way, while Ethan had to deal with his emotions killing people thousands of miles away.
Army isn't much different since they've been implementing desensitization from killing for decades. Ever heard of Burrhus Frederic Skinner? Yeah during world wars they noticed that the average soldier intentionally shoots to miss when confronted with the enemy. USA did everything to change that, so did other nations.

I just rewatched behind enemy lines since it first came out some 22 years ago. Whoa, that was a long time ago. Couldn’t believe how that movie actually scared me in some scenes. It was well written and executed. The bad guys, the good guys.
This is a combo of that movie and Bat 22
