“Do I need a lefty AND righty hook knife to carve the inside of a spoon bowl?”

  • There’s this common misconception that you need two hook knives or a double edged hook to carve the bowl of a spoon. If you’re right handed, a lefty hook may make it easier to gain access to certain parts of the inside of a spoon’s bowl, but it isn’t a necessary tool to get the job done.

I understand where you’re coming from. I do apologize for the lack of content but there are things I’ve had to put ahead of my RUclips videos. In life it seems if you’re to put your energy somewhere, it means losing focus somewhere else. I’m doing what is most important for me at the moment but I suspect I’ll be back when my time allows me to be.

I finish pretty much the same way. Very delicate cuts. But I'm a hacker in the beginning. Big huge cuts when roughing them in and get more refined as I go. Great tips here for the beginner. Opposing corners are always the most difficult to get the same depth and line as the easy side. Your a great teacher Sean...

Jimmy Mead thanks very much. I often feel that I’m telling more than needs to be spoken. I wish this video was a bit more in frame but I didn’t really have time to fiddle with the camera as I was expecting an important phone call and was trying to be as quick as possible.

I didn't really notice the camera angle being off a lil.. you can see everything that's important. Man that's a great looking knife. I'm ordering one soon lol...

Do you have suggestions for more readily available hook knives beyond the Mora? Flexcut? Pfeil?

Personally I’m not a fan of either of those options, but everyone is different. Josh Whitehead from Greenhaven Forge has been making some amazing hooks lately. Shoot him a message or an email and let him know I sent you and he’ll take good care of you

can a lefty use only a right-handed hook comfortably ? (I want to buy a spoon making set, but they don't seem to come with lefty hooks)

    • @HuronSpoonCo

A righty hook isn’t just for right handed use. It just designates the direction you carve from- right handed hook carves the bowl from right to left and left handed hook carves the bowl from left to right.
